EQ 527f (Robert Barclay, 1676): Now the way to distinguish the church, gathering, or assembly of people whereof Christ truly is the head, from such as falsely pretend thereto, is by considering the principles and grounds upon which they are gathered together.... Forasmuch as sanctification and holiness is the great and chief end among true Christians, which moves them to gather together, therefore the apostle defines the Church in his salutation to the Corinthians, 1 Cor 1:2: "Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints"....

JN3:101 (1656): And this is that which Paul saw getting in amongst the churches in his time, setting up sects, and the person by whom they were baptized; puffed up for them, and against the other apostles, some of Paul, some of Peter, &c. [1 Cor 1:12] Which Paul seeing, thanks God he baptized no more of them [1 Cor 1:14], and plainly says, "Christ sent him not to baptize, but to preach the gospel [1 Cor 1:17]," though he could use it, until he saw them make an idol of it, thereby to make divisions and parties, and to puff up one above another, as it is now used at this day, yea, far more, for it is now made the key to let in and shut out of that they call a church; yea further, some say none can be saved without it, but all that have it are believers and shall be saved; and so set it in the place of Christ.

IP3:457 (1670): What is Paul? what is Apollos? or what is Cephas [1 Cor 1:12]? It is one and the same pure life and word of power which springs in all the holy brethren, whom God hath sanctified and prepared to give forth the sound of his holy trumpet. It is the Lord himself who gives forth the true and certain sound [1 Cor 14:8]: great is the company of those whom he hath chosen and sent forth to publish it; none of whom can be despised in their message, without despising Him that sent them [Luk 10:16]; for he sends forth the least and weakest, as well as the greatest.

Or is it not the same Lord Jesus Christ, who died without the gates of Jerusalem, according to the flesh, yet was then alive in the Spirit? Do we affirm that the Godhead died? No.... GF6:290f (1685): And if John's decreasing baptism [John 3:30], with elementary water, had been Christ's baptism, then the apostle would not have thanked God he baptized none but these few [1 cor 1:14-16]; nor have said, that Christ did not send him to baptize with water, but to preach the gospel, as in 1 Cor 1:17. But it is clear, the apostle did bring the church of Christ to the one spiritual baptism of Christ Jesus.

IP3:167f (1668): Now though the apostle condescended ... as to John's baptism; to wit the baptism of water (for that was not Christ's baptism, but his baptism was that of the Holy Ghost and fire [Mat 3:11]); yet he blessed God that he did not make use of it [1 Cor 1:14], and said, he was not sent to baptize [1 Cor 1:17]. What was he not sent to baptize with? Why, not with water, not with John's baptism; but he was sent to baptize with Christ's baptism; to baptize into the name, into the Spirit, into the power (and so were all the apostles), as well as to preach the gospel. Gal 3:5. Mat 28:19.

(1 Cor 1:17)

[Other texts citing 1 Cor 1:17: GF4:128 (Heb 10:14), JN2:590 (Mat 4:19f)]

JN2:233 (1655): What scripture had Paul to deny that he was sent to baptize [1 Cor 1:17], when he saw them abuse it, and setting it up above Christ...; for which the literal observers who denied the Spirit's teaching counted them blasphemers, as you do now; and so by such they suffered for holding forth the substance and denying the shadows to such as idolized them, though otherwise the shadows had been lawful: nor do I judge any that do it in obedience and so comes up above it; but all you that stick in these outward things, contending about dipping or sprinkling but neglect the power and life; you are the Jews of these days,... all out of the power and in the world, in your own wills and worldly pleasures and profits, pride and covetousness; some for free will, others not, but all in your own wills: and thus while you are about all these things received by tradition, the law of God written in your hearts is made of none effect [Jer 31:33/1 Cor 1:17].....

RBA 327, RBAF 284 (1678, XI.19): Secondly, this manner of preaching as used by them, considering that they also affirm that it may be and often is performed by men who are wicked or void of true grace, can not only not edify the church [1 Cor 14:4f], beget or nourish true faith, but is destructive to it, being directly contrary to the nature of the Christian and apostolic ministry mentioned in the Scriptures; for the apostle preached the gospel "not in the wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ be made of none effect" (1 Cor 1:17). But this preaching, not being done by the actings and movings of God's spirit but by man's invention and eloquence, in his own will and through his natural and acquired parts and learning, is in the wisdom of words, and therefore the cross of Christ is thereby made of none effect.

EQ 547 (John Crook, 1686): alas, ... [it is] as if the sins of "Sodom", which were pride, carelessness, excess and contempt of the poor [Ezek 16:49], were become the vices of Sion, many young people and others getting into things again which their parents, relations, and acquaintances, for good conscience sake, were forced to lay aside; as if in these latter times the efficacy of Truth was not the same as at the beginning, and as if the cross of Christ, that was so powerful them, was now become of no effect [1 Cor 1:17].

GF7:227 (1662): You must bow at the cross of Christ, which is the power of God [1 Cor 1:18], which since the apostles' days the apostate christians have lost; and therefore they bow to a cross, a stick, a stone, a piece of iron, a piece of wood. Now bowing to the cross of Christ, which is the power of God, that strikes over the nature of fallen man; for who bends, and submits, and yields, and bows to the power of God within, feels it to rise over and strike over, and work over the carnal part, and that part that turns into ungodliness, and all that is bad, and is a cross to it. So bow to the power of God.

MFU 265 (1659): And the eternal God of power keep you faithful to your measures in his fear to wait in the cross to the carnal & to the flesh: And to all the wisdom of man, which from God is shut, to which wisdom the Cross is foolishness [1 Cor 1:18], but by it & no other way is the enmity slain [Eph 2:16], and this thou shalt eternally witness. Therefore as thou loves thy soul be obedient to the death of the Cross [Phil 2:8]: so there I leave thee to be nailed.

IP3:474 (1671): Thou hast formerly taken up crosses in a way of wisdom, and according to a comprehensive knowledge and judgment; come, now, learn to take up the seed's cross in the true foolishness [1 Cor 1:18]. For there is not another thing that gives life, than the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, which truly and really slays [Eph 2:16]; and to that which can discern and take up this cross [Mat 16:24], and live and walk under it, the yoke is easy and the burden light [Mat 11:30].

HPS 53 (Sarah Blackborow, 1658): ...it matters not what name you bear, or what fellowship you are of while you are out of the fellowship of the Father and the Son [1 Jn 1:3], and turned from that which should lead you thither, and out of the Cross which is the power of God [1 Cor 1:18], which would crucify you to the world, and the world unto you [Gal 6:14]: I say, What are you more than they who never bore any of those names?

WTG 129 (Elizabeth Hudson, 1742): All preaching seemed foolishness to me [1 Cor 1:18] and an interruption to my way of thinking so that [I] dreaded a Friend’s getting up in a meeting, and sometimes when they did I've sat and condemn [sic] their impertinence as judging it such for any one man to teach another [Jer 31:34], especially people of superior understandings.

IP1:417 (1660): Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? [1 Cor 1:20] The wisdom of this world is precious in the eye of the world; and the wisdom of God in his poor, weak, despised earthen vessels [2 Cor 4:7] is still foolishness with them; but the Lord so orders it, that he still justifies his despised wisdom in his despised vessels [Mat 11:19], and makes the wisdom of the world appear foolish [1 Cor 3:19] to all the single and upright-hearted, who thirst after and wait for the revelation of his truth.

JWJM 253 (17–): If we consider the havoc that is made in this age, and how numbers of people hurried on,... and in that wisdom which is foolishness with God [1 Cor 1:20] are perverting the true use of things, labouring as in the fire [Hab 2:13], contending with one another even unto blood, and exerting their power to support ways of living foreign to the life of one wholly crucified to the world [Gal 6:14]....

The doctrines, ordinances, commandments, and rudiments of the men of the world [Col 2:20,22], they are below: "for the world by wisdom knows not God [1 Cor 1:21];" and they with their wisdom would bring all men to a conformity to their image, like Nebuchadnezzar's, which he set up, and to fall down to it, else into his fiery furnace they must be thrown [Dan 3], and Daniel must be cast into the lion's den [Dan 6:16].

MFS 34 (1660): [quotes 1 Cor 1:21] This is the wisdom of God, the way of God, not to teach people by that which man's wisdom teaches, that which man's dark heart invents, imagines, and studies out aof his brain, but by that which the Holy Ghost teaches in this his day in which he is risen in his eternal Spirit. They that can believe in this foolishness of preaching are saved.

IP1:417f (1660): ... the Lord makes the folly of this world's wisdom appear ... in that by all their wisdom they cannot find out the true knowledge of God. 1 Cor 1:21. "The world by wisdom knew not God." Though there be an exceeding desire kindled in them to know God; though they take all the ways that heart can imagine to attain their desires; though they study and meditate ever so hard; though they get ever so many arts and languages; nay, though they read the very Scriptures ever so diligently; though they labor in the very fire ; yet what they get, what they gather, what they understand, what they comprehend by this wisdom, it is all but "very vanity." To preach "Christ crucified, was to the Jews a stumbling block, and to the Greeks foolishness." [1 Cor 1:23] To preach this doctrine in its full extent, is now both a stumbling block and downright foolishness unto the creature, as much as ever; but to such as see it in the light, it remains to be both "the power of God, and the wisdom of God; because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men [1 Cor 1:24f]."

JN2:586f (1655): And now you who say it is liberty of conscience, when people may meet and not be molested, but deny to give liberty to any to go into markets and synagogues to declare the message of Christ which he sent them about, you are ignorant of the call of Christ and the necessity that is laid upon such as he calls, and the woe that is to them that go not at his command, which none that stand in their own wills or have their times in their own hands [Psa 31:15] knows anything of, for if they did they would not oppose it; but this is the cross of Christ which to the Jews is a stumbling block, and to the Greeks foolishness [1 Cor 1:23].

MFU 128f (1655): if they dwell and abide in the power, the power of the Lord will work down, and bring the fleshly man under, and bind him that is strong & spoil his goods [Mat 12:29], and this you must not limit with your reason and wisdom for this is unlimited [Psa 78:41], and this is various in its working and operation according to the necessity of the particular on which it is manifested. And this is ordered by the wisdom of the living god which is foolishness to the wisdom of man [1 Cor 1:25], and so be still and silent as you love your souls.

JWJM 57 (1757): Deep humility is a strong bulwark, and as we enter into it we find safety and true exaltation. The foolishness of God is wiser than man; and the weakness of God is stronger than man [1 Cor 1:25]. JN2:318 (1655): Surely you are they that are to be bemoaned above all other, who have had a measure of tenderness but now wholly lost; and not only so but now oppose it in others who retain it, nor would seek after it. And now this being all that this shaking and reformation hath brought forth in you, the righteous God hath cast you off and chosen things that are not, and things weak and foolish and contemptible to confound the wise and mighty and learned [1 Cor 1:27].

IP1:216 (1659): What persons are fittest for God to make use of, towards the recovery of his people out of the apostasy? Doth not God choose that which is weak and more contemptible [1 Cor 1:27f], that his glory might the more appear? Is not this a more likely way for him to steal upon the world, than if he appeared in the wise and learned ones? And among whom is his appearance to be expected? Among those who are settled upon their lees [Jer 48:11, Zeph 1:12] in the apostasy; or among those who have mourned, panted, and sought to come out of it, and could not be settled without his appearing to them, and fixing their feet upon the rock [Psa 40:2]? But have we been unsettled, since God hath fastened us on the living foundation? Nay, here is no more going out; but he that abides faithful remains a pillar in the house of God [Rev 3:12].

IP1:44 (1658): The Christians formerly (in the first day of the breaking forth of God's power) had Christ in them, the living Word; they opened their hearts to him, received him in, felt him there, found him made of God to them their wisdom, their righteousness, their sanctification, their redemption. 1 Cor 1:30. They had the thing that those words signify and speak of, and knew the meaning of the words by feeling of the thing. But Christians now, in the apostasy, have got several apprehensions from the words, without feeling the thing the words speak of; and there lies their religion. And now the heir is come, holding forth the thing they have all been talking of, all sects upon the earth are mad against him, and would fain kill him [Mat 21:37-39]. They would not have the living substance...; but they would have their dead apprehensions from the words live, and their dead forms and practices owned; and the heir of life must come in their way..., or they will not own him.

For though none are justified that are not in measure sanctified, yet they are not justified because they are sanctified, but for his sake that sanctifies them, and works all their good works in them [Isa 26:12], and for them; to wit Christ Jesus, who is made unto them as to the saints of old, wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption , that he that glorieth let him glory in the Lord, 1 Cor 1:30,31.

For all the great profession that was then in this nation of God & Xt, & ordinances; yet when Christ Jesus came, & visited us in his power, & in the demonstration of his Spirit [1 Cor 2:4], then they stood against him, as bad as the Jews in the days of his flesh [Heb 5:7], being that the Truth struck at all their profession, their foundation being false, standing not on Christ the light it was strange to think that all the ministers that professed such high things should be all out of the doctrine of Christ....

RBA 296, RBAF 248 (1678, XI.6): And as everyone is thus gathered, and so met together inwardly in their spirits as well as outwardly in their persons, there the secret power and virtue of life is known to refresh the soul, and the pure motions and breathings of God's Spirit are felt to arise, from which as words of declaration, prayers, or praises arise, the acceptable worship is known which edifies the Church [1 Cor 14:4f] and is well-pleasing to God [Phil 4:18], and no man here limits the Spirit of God [Psa 78:41] nor bringeth forth is own cunned and gathered stuff, but everyone puts that forth which the Lord puts into their hearts: and it is uttered forth not in man's will and wisdom but "in the evidence and demonstration of the Spirit and of power [1 Cor 2:4]."

GFT 84 (1674): Let your faith stand not in the words of man's wisdom, but in the power of God [1 Cor 2:4f] that thou mayest have a possession of this pearl in thy own field like a merchantman that ventured all for it [Mat 13:44-46], that everyone may take their possession and not stand idle [Mat 20:3,6], that the Lord may be honored and glorified over all, by all.

RBA 327 (1678, XI.19): [quotes 1 Cor 2:4f] But [the professors'] preaching having nothing of the Spirit and power in it, both the preachers and hearers confessing they wait for no such thing nor yet are oftentimes sensible of it, must needs stand in the enticing words of man's wisdom [1 Cor 2:4], since it is by the mere wisdom of man sought after and the mere strength of man's eloquence and enticing words it is uttered, and therefore it is no wonder if the faith of such as hear and depend upon such preachers and preachings stand in the wisdom of men, and not in the power of God [1 Cor 2:5].

So they were to practise the same order, who were the believers in Christ, which the apostle in the power of Christ had given to them. For the apostle had the wisdom of God, which he had ordained before the world began, unto the glory of his people [1 Cor 2:7] then and now also.

JN3:53 (1656): So that which leads out into the knowledge is the fall; but that which leads into the simplicity of life, which is manifest in the Spirit, and not in the knowledge of the first man, that leads to the resurrection of life; for it is the hidden wisdom that God ordained before the world unto glory [1 Cor 2:7]; so to the hidden man of the heart you must look to find it, which is not corruptible [1 Pet 3:4].

GF7:31 (1653): For God hath raised up his own seed in his saints, which seed, Christ, is but one in all, and spreads over all, and throughout all; and we now are through him come to have dominion and power over the evil one, and to tread upon that which hath been too strong for us [Psa 18:17], the enemy of our peace, and the enemy of our unity with God and one with another. So in that, which is raised up in us, which trampleth upon the earthly, dark power, have we unity with God, and fellowship with his son [1 Jn 1:3], and unity one with another [1 Jn 1:7]; so are known to one another in that, which none, who are of the world, knoweth [1 Cor 2:8].

MFU 387 (1665): My dearly beloved brethren and sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ which are become sufferers for the Lord's truth and for the testimony of his name, which the princes of this world never knew in times nor ages past but forbade to speak and preach in that name upon pain of penalties and sufferings, and so they crucified the Lord of glory [1 Cor 2:8]. And so this generation now forbids to meet and worship in the name and power of our Lord Jesus Christ, to which name every knee must bow and confess to him [Phil 2:10f], though they now strive and contend against his word and work..., but they know not what they do [Luk 23:34], for persecution was always blind....

IP1:59 (1658): Thus they first give way to the fleshly wisdom, and suppress the truth in themselves, and then the would go forth and suppress it in others; and they think them mad, and their rage riseth against them where the truth is suffered to grow, and man's reason or fleshly wisdom denied. And thus is the "Lord of glory" evilly entreated, and slain [1 Cor 2:8] at this day by this generation of Christians.... and his blood will be required [Luk 11:50f]; for the earth shall not always drink it up and cover it [Job 16:18], nor the adulterous woman be always able to wipe her mouth, and say, she hath done no wickedness [Prov 30:20].

RBA 175f, RBAF 133 (1678, VII.3): ...the formal cause of justification is not the works...; but this inward birth, this Jesus brought forth in the heart..., whom the Father cannot but accept, and all those who thus are sprinkled with the blood of Jesus [1 Pet 1:2], and washed with it [Rev 1:5]. By this also comes that communication of the goods of Christ unto us, "by which we come to be made partakers of the divine nature" (2 Pet 1:4), and we are made one with him, as the branches with the vine [John 15:5], and have a title and right to what he hath done and suffered for us. So that his obedience becomes ours, his righteousness ours, his death and sufferings ours. And by this nearness we come to have a sense of his sufferings, and to suffer with his seed, that yet lies pressed and crucified in the hearts of the ungodly, and so travail with it, and for its redemption, and for the repentance of those souls, that in it are crucifying as yet the "Lord of Glory" [1 Cor 2:8].

WPR 584 (1694): as Jerusalem of old persecuted the manifestation of the Son of God in the flesh, and crucified and whipped and imprisoned his servants; so hast thou, O Land, crucified to thyself afresh the Lord of life and glory [Heb 6:6/1 Cor 2:8], and done despite to his spirit of grace [Heb 10:29]....

GF5:239 (1676): [quotes 1 Cor 2:9f] so the things of God are not known, but as they are revealed by his spirit; and if any thing be revealed to another that sits by, let the first hold his peace [1 Cor 14:30]; so the man of sin and the wicked one is not known, but as he is revealed [2 Th 2:3]; ... you do not know the grace of God, but by revelation, 1 Pet 1:13, nor do you not know the mystery which was kept secret since the world began, but by revelation, Rom 16:25, neither do you know the righteous judgments of God, but by revelation, Rom 2:5, and though the Jews had the scriptures, yet they knew not Christ the Word.

GF3:177 (1659): But now who are come to the Lamb, are come to that ye have ravened from, they witness immediate revelation. They are come to that the apostles were in, the spirit of Christ, the spirit of God; they witness immediate revelation. Who are come into the fear of God, the things of God are revealed unto them; who are come into the spirit of God, it reveals to them the deep things of God [1 Cor 2:10].

JN3:395 (1656): And thou denies that this light can show that Christ was born of a virgin, that the world was made of nothing, nor convince of the resurrection. To which I say, none of them was known at f irst but by the light, nor can they be known now as they ought to be (though blind guides [Mat 23:16,24] may talk of them) but by the light; for it is the Spirit that reveals all things, even the hidden things of God [1 Cor 2:10], and leads into all truth [John 16:13], else the knowledge is but a tradition.

SBD 42 (Samuel Bownas, 1750): ...it behooves everyone to consider how they are qualified for the work of the ministry, lest by undertaking what is above their capacities and present strength, they should cause laughter and lightness by delivering impertinent parables, comparisons, and allegories not opened to them nor given them by the Spirit of God; that Spirit which "searcheth all things, even the deep things of God [1 Cor 2:10]," and is the foundation of all the true ministry and ministers.

SIW 90 (Sarah Tuke Grubb, 1782): ... where ministers maintain their inward exercise, and keep near to their gifts, the spirit of true discernment, which searcheth all things [1 Cor 2:10], is not wanting to prove, from the line in which it leads them, the rectitude of their ministry to the living and wise in heart [Prov 10:8]; who judge not by the sight of the eye, or the hearing of the ear [Job 42:5], but by the unerring evidence of truth, which remains to be the savour [text: favour] of life unto life [2 Cor 2:16].

GF6:250 (1684): And the things of God knows no man, but the spirit of God [1 Cor 2:11]; and the things of God are not to be spoken in the words which man's wisdom teaches; but in the words that the holy ghost teaches [1 Cor 2:13], &c. So this unction or anointing within [1 Jn 2:20,27], can try when men do speak the things of God [1 Jn 4:1], in the words that man's wisdom has taught them, and not in the words that the holy ghost teaches.

RBA 91 (1678, IV.3): [quotes 1 Cor 2:11] ...I hope these men will confess unto me, that the things of a man are not known by the animal spirit only, i.e. by that which he hath in common with the beasts, but by the rational; so it must be that rational that is here understood.... According to their judgment he should have said, "The things of God knoweth no man by his animal spirit, but by his rational spirit": for to say, the Spirit of God, here spoken of, is no other than the rational spirit of man, would border upon blasphemy, since they are so often contradistinguished. Again, going on, he saith they are not rationally, but spiritually discerned [1 Cor 2:14].

WTG 230 (Elizabeth Hudson, 1750): I commended ... her retirement from the world and spirit of it [1 Cor 2:12] which was at enmity with all true religion [Jas 4:4] and had a tendency to weaken our desires and growth in it....

JSS 27 (17–) : [quotes 1 Cor 2:12] There is a measure of the spirit, grace, light, and life of the son, freely given to all men to profit withal [1 Cor 12:7], but none savingly know it, but those who give up to its mtions in temselves, so as to receive it for their teacher; then they see clearly, it had been freely given them of God before, though it lay long hid and buried, and they knew it not.

And here he exercises his authority and is heathen [Mat 20:25], and is prince in the air [Eph 2:2], and hath the powers of darkness committed to him; but blessed be the Father who hath hid the glorious things of the kingdom from him [Mat 11:25] and hath appointed that this princely wisdom of his shall come to naught [1 Cor 2:6].

GF5:268 (1677): So the natural man with his natural spirit, knows the things of the natural man, and knows not the things of God [1 Cor 2:14]; but his spirit being enlightened, which is the candle of the Lord [Prov 20:27], with this divine light, it gives him the knowledge of the divine and heavenly things, and of his kingdom, and the world that has no end [Eph 3:21/Luk 1:33].

JN3:731 (William Tomlinson, 1656): The natural man perceives not the things of God, neither can he know them [1 Cor 2:14]. How then should he that's such be able to judge of them? How can you that are judge such of the high things of God, and not count them blasphemy? How can you hear one speak of saviors and not count it blasphemy, though the Scripture hath spoke it [Obad 1:21 (text: Obad 11)]? IP2:107 (1660): The natural man, the reasoning man, the understanding man, the wise man according to the natural wisdom, cannot understand the things of God [1 Cor 2:14]. Here is no learning to pray aright, to believe aright, to hope aright, to mourn aright, to rejoice aright, &c., but this wisdom must be brought to nothing, 1 Cor 1:19, and a man must become a child to all knowledge, as let in this way; and he that so becomes a child is taught to pray, to believe, to wait, to hope, and all that is necessary to eternal life.

HPS 288 (Susannah Blandford, 1698): (Continued from under Heb 3:1): and those that willingly give up all they have to him, shall find in it more than they can believe, or the carnal mind can apprehend, for they knew what they said, that the carnal mind knows not the things of God, for they are spiritually discerned [1 Cor 2:14], and to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace [Rom 8:6]....

And this the Scriptures teach us to believe is a right Christian's state and privilege; for said the Apostle, We have the mind of Christ [1 Cor 2:16]; and the secrets of God are with them that fear him [Psa 25:14]; and guide me by thy counsel, and bring me to glory [Psa 73:24].
