18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words [G: things], he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and [T: and] his disciples.

18:2 And Judas also [G: And Judas; BT: Judas also], which betrayed him, knew [G: +also] the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

18:3 Judas then, having [GBT: after he had] received a band of men and officers [T: ministers] from the chief [GBT: of the high] priests and Pharisees, cometh [GBT: came] thither with lanterns and torches [T: firebrands] and weapons.

18:4 Jesus therefore [GBT: Then (B: and) Jesus] , knowing all things that should come upon [G: unto; BT: on] him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?

18:5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith [GT: said] unto them, I am he. And [G: Now; BT: omit] Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.

18:6 As soon then [T: But as soon] as he had [B: omits] said unto them, I am he, they went [G: +away] backward [GT: backwards], and fell to the ground.

18:7 Then asked he [T: And he asked] them again, Whom seek ye? And [BT: omit] they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

18:8 Jesus answered, I have told [GT: said unto] you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me [G: therefore if ye seek me; B: If ye seek me therefore; T: if ye seek me], let these go their way:

18:9 That the saying [G: This was that the word] might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none [BT: not lost one].

18:10 Then [T: omits] Simon Peter having a sword [T: had a sword nad] drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.      qtext

18:12 Then the band [BT: company] and the captain and [GT: +the] officers [T: ministers] of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

18:15 And [G: Now] Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did [GT: omit] another disciple: [G: +and] that disciple was known unto [GT: of] the high priest, and [G: therefore he] went in with Jesus into the palace [G: hall] of the high priest.

18:30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor [GBT: an evildoer], we would not have delivered him up [GBT: omit] unto thee.

IP2:128 (1660): Surely the spirit of this world will try it out to the very last against the Spirit of God [1 Cor 2:12]! For indeed the spirit of this world is not subject to the Spirit of God, nor indeed can be, and so cannot endure the government of his kingdom (which is not of this world [John 18:36]) to be set up in the sight of it.

TEM 53f, EQ 210 (16 ): The occasion of this stopping of letters at that time was that mad prank of those infatuated fifth-monarchy men, who from their meeting-house inf Coleman Street, London, breaking forth in arms, under the command of their chieftain, Venner, made an insurrection in the city, on pretence of setting up the kingdom of Jesus, who, it is said, they expected would come down from heaven to be their leader; so little understood they the nature of his kingdom, though he himself had declared it was not of this world [John 18:36].

RBA 316 (1678, XI.14): forasmuch as his "kingdom is not of this world [John 18:36]", neither doth his worship consist in it or need either the wisdom, glory, riches or splendor of this world to beautify or adorn it, nor yet the outward power or arm of flesh [Jer 17:5] to maintain, uphold or protect it; but it is and may be performed by those that are spiritually minded [Rom 8:6], notwithstanding all the opposition, violence, and malice of men; because it being purely spiritual, it is out of the reach of natural men to interrupt or molest it.

WPR 471 (1678): Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's [Mat 22:21]; that is, divine worship, and all things relating to it, belong unto God.... it is not in the power of any man or men in the world, to sway or compel the mind in matters of worship to God. Where this is attempted, God's prerogative is invaded, and Caesar (by which word I understand the civil government) hath all. For he doth not only take his own things, but the things appertaining to God also. Since if God hath not conscience he hath nothing. My kingdom, saith Christ, is not of this world [John 18:36], nor is the magistrate's of the other world; therefore he exceeds his province and commission whenever he meddles with the rites of it.

(John 18:37)

IP3:222 (1672): for this cause we were born and brought into the world, to testify [John 18:37] to the present appearance of our God, and of his Christ, in this our day. Glory to him who hath called and chosen us [Rev 17:14] to, and (in a true and precious measure and degree of his own pure life) made us faithful therein.

(John 18:37f)

GF5:325 (1676): And Christ tells Pilate, when he was examining him, [quotes John 18:37]; mark this, every one of you christians, every one of you that is of the truth, heareth Christ's voice; but you that are not of the truth, heareth not his voice, and will say there is no hearing of his voice nowadays. And Pilate, the governor, said unto Christ, "What is truth [John 18:38]?" and I fear that there is too many that are called christians, that crucify Christ to themselves afresh [Heb 6:6], that may say as Pilate did, "what is truth?" so much are they strangers to it.

GF8:134 (1676): [String of refs to faith] And it is called the mystery of faith [1 Tim 3:9]; for no natural men, with all the arts, languages, and wisdom upon the earth, can find it out, or know this mystery, nor make it; for Christ Jesus, the heavenly and spiritual man, [1 Cor 15:47] is the author and finisher of it; and no natural man, though he may have all the languages that began at Babel [Gen 11:1- 9], and yet he may not know the mystery of this one faith, which Christ Jesus is the author of. For Pilate, that set Hebrew, Greek, and Latin atop of Christ [John 19:18f], who was the author and finisher of faith; he was so ignorant of the mystery of faith, that he asked Christ, ''what is truth?'' [John 18:38] And the Greeks, that spoke natural Greek, and the Hebrews, that spoke natural Hebrew, the preaching of Christ, the author and finisher of the true faith, was a stumbling block and foolishness to them [1 Cor 1:23].

RBA 179 (1678, VII.5): For since Christ said, "It is finished [John 19:30]," and did finish his work sixteen hundred years ago and upwards, if he so fully perfected redemption then, and did then actually reconcile everyone that is to be saved, not simply opening a door of mercy for them ... and communicating unto them a measure of his grace, by which they may see their sins, and be able to repent; but really make them to be reputed as just,... while nevertheless they are actually unjust, so that no part of their redemption is to be wrought by him now, as to their reconciliation and justification; then the whole doctrinal part of the Bible is useless and of no profit....

(John 19:34)

IP3:40 (1667): Query 16. What is the laver of regeneration, or the water wherewith the soul is washed, and whereof a man is born again? Is it outward or inward? Is it the water which ran out of the side of the natural body, when it was pierced with a spear [John 19:34]? Or the water whcih springs from the fountain of life, the water which floweth from the Spirit?

(John 19:37)

RBA 124, RBAF 90 (1678, V/VI.15) The Scripture saith (Amos 2:13), God is pressed down as a cart under sheaves; and (Heb 6:6) Christ is crucified in the ungodly.... In this respect, then, as he is in the seed, which is in all men, we have said "Christ is in all men," and have preached and directed all men to Christ in them; who lies cruicfied in them by their sins and iniquities, that they may "look upon him whom they have pierced [Zech 2:10 | John 19:37]," and repent; whereby he, that now lies as it were slain and buried in them, may come to be raised, and have dominion in their hearts, over all.

20:1 [G: +Now] The first day of the week [B: first day of the Sabbaths; T: morrow after the sabbath day] cometh [GBT: came] Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth [GBT: saw] the stone taken away from the sepulchre [GT: tomb; B: grave].

20:2 Then she runneth, and cometh [GBT: ran, and came] to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith [GT: said] unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre [B: grave; T: tomb], and we know not [BT: cannot tell] where they have laid him.

20:3 Peter therefore [T: omits] went forth, and that [G: the] other disciple, and came to [GT: unto] the sepulchre.

20:4 So [BT: omit] they ran both together: and [G: but] the [T: that] other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

20:5 And he stooping [GT: he stooped; B: whenhe had stooped] down, and looking in, [GT: and; B: he] saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.

20:6 Then cometh [GBT: came] Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth [GBT: saw] the linen clothes lie,

20:7 And the napkin [G: kerchief] , that was about [G: upon] his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

20:8 Then went in also that [G: that] other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw [G: +it] , and believed.

20:9 For as yet they knew not the scripture [T: scriptures], that he must [BT: should] rise again from the dead [BT: dead] .

20:10 Then [GT: And] the disciples went away again unto their own home.

(John 20:19)

JN1:28 (1653): the priest said, "Christ is in heaven with a carnal body." To which said James, "Christ filleth heaven and earth [cf Jer 23:24], and is not carnal, but spiritual: for if Christ be in heaven with a carnal body, and the saints with a spiritual body [1 Cor 15:44], that is not proportionable; neither was that a carnal body which came in among the disciples, the doors being shut [John 20:19]; for Christ is a mystery, and thou knowest him not."

RBA 428, RBAF 386 (1678, XIV.5): But as to ... fleeing, and meeting secretly and not openly testifying for the Truth, they usually object that ... the disciples met secretly "for fear of the Jews [John 20:19].".... As for that private meeting of the disciples, we have only an account of the matter of fact, but that suffices not to make of it a precedent for us, and men's aptness to imitate them in that (which, for aught we know, might have been an act of weakness) and not in other things of the contrary nature, shows that it is not a true zeal to be like those disciples, but indeed a desire to preserve themselves, which moves them to do so.

IP1:43 (1658): Disobedience to the law is unrighteousness, and brings death; and disobedience to the living Word is unrighteousness, and cannot be justified, but condemned; and obedience to it cannot be condemned, but justified; so that when the soul hears, believes, and obeys, then it is justified; then its former sins are forgotten, and this is imputed to it unto righteousness [Jas 2:23]. But when the soul will not hear, will not believe, will not obey, this unbelief is judged in him, and his sins retained, and not remitted [John 20:23].

SIW 97 (Sarah Tuke Grubb, 1787?): Does it not therefore, remain to be our business, to wait for the light when a little of it appears; to believe in it, and that the fullness of the day will come, though we do not now see it; remembering that "Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed [John 20:29]."

21:2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas [GBT: +which is] called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana [T: +a city] in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his [T: the] disciples.

21:3 Simon Peter saith [GT: said] unto them, I [B: +will] go a fishing. They say [GT: said] unto him, We also [GBT: +will] go with thee. They went forth [GBT: their way], and entered into a ship immediately [GT: straightway]; and that night they caught [GBT: caught they] nothing.

21:10 Jesus saith [GBT: +out] unto them, Bring of the fish [G: fishes] which ye have now caught.

21:11 Simon Peter went up [GT: stepped forth], and drew the net to [B: +the] land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all [G: albeit] there were so many, yet was not the net broken.

21:12 Jesus saith [GBT: +out] unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who [T: What] art thou? knowing [GBT: seeing (BT: for) they knew] that it [G: he] was the Lord.

21:13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh [GBT came and took] bread, and giveth [GBT: gave] them, and fish likewise.

21:14 [T: +And] This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself [BT: appeared] to his disciples, after that he was risen [GBT: +again] from the dead [BT: death].

IP3:395 (1677): "feed my lambs, feed my sheep," said Christ to [Peter. John 21:15-17] But how should he feed them? In what should he feed them? With what should he feed them? All power, saith Chrisat, is given me in heaven and on earth [Mat 28:18]; and I am to ascend to my Father [John 20:17], and to receive the fulness of his Spirit; and do ye wait, and ye shall receive abundantly of the same Spirit and power [Luk 24:49, Acts 1:4f], and then in that Spirit and power ye shall be able to feed my lambs and sheep, that are begotten and gathered to me, in it; but out of it none is able to feed and build them up; for that is the very thing they are to be fed with and built up in.
