MFS 71 (1666): The night of apostasy draws to an end and the true light now shines, the morning light, the bright morning star, the root and offspring of David [Rev 22:16]. He is risen.... The joy of the morning is come [Psa 30:5]. The bride, the Lamb's wife [Rev 21:9], is making herself ready, as a bride that is adorning for her husband [Rev 21:2]. To her is granted that she shall be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white, and the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints [Rev 19:8]. MFS 77 (1666): Revelations 22:17 [saith]: "The Spirit and the Bride say, 'Come.'" So is not the bride the church? Does the church only consist of men? You that deny women's speaking, answer: does it not consist of women, as well as men? Is not the bride compared to the whole church? Does not the bride say, "Come"? Does not the woman speak then, the husband, Christ Jesus, the Amen [Rev 3:14]? Does not the false church go about to stop the bride's mouth? But it is not possible, for the bridegroom is with his bride. He opens her mouth. Christ Jesus – who goes on conquering, and to conquer [Rev 6:2], who kills and slays with the sword which is the word of his mouth [Rev 19:21] – the Lamb and the saints shall have the victory [Rev 17:14, Dan 7:21f], the true speakers of men and women over the false power.

IP4:34 (167-?): Is not the voice gone forth from him that is true [1 Jn 5:20]? "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters," &c. [Isa 55:1] "And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely." [Rev 22:17] And is not he near who causeth the thirst, and giveth the will? Whom hath the Lord excluded? Why should any man exclude himself? The call is universal, the way is set open to all. That is at hand which hath life and power in it, and is ready to work in all.

22:18 For I testify [G: protest] unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:     qtext

22:19 And if any man shall take away from [G: diminish of; BT: minish of] the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the [GT: those] things which are written in this book.     qtext

22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely [T: be it] I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

22:21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

RBA 84 (III.9, 1678): [In this section , 81-84 Barclay discusses the question of the canon] And lastly as to these words [quotes Rev 22:18], I desire they will show me how it relates to anything else than to that particular prophecy. It saith not, "now the canon of the scriptures is filled up, no man is to write more from that Spirit"; yea, do not all confess that there have been prophecies and true prophets since? ... [Quotes Prov 30:6 and Deut 4:2, argues that scriptures continued to be written afterwards] So that though we should extend that of the Revelation beyond the particular prophecy of that book, it cannot be understood but of a new gospel, or new doctrines, or of restraining man's spirit, that he mix not of his human words with the divine; and not of a new revelation of the old, as we have said before.

GF7:206 (1661): The word of God cannot be bound [2 Tim 2:9], which makes rich, which lives for ever; in which is the life. So, do not quench the spirit [1 Th 5:19], nor add to the prophecy, nor diminish; that keeps you from the plagues, and to see your names written in the Lamb's book of life [Rev 22:18f]: there stands your joy everlasting, through which ye see the white stone [Rev 2:17], through which light, power, and seed, ye overcome that which is gone forth from God. So, ye dwelling in the son of God, ye shall go no more forth [Rev 3:12], but shall inherit all things.

JN1:95 (1653): do you not draw people to those things which there is no Scripture for? Telling them of a sacrament, for which there is no Scripture, telling them of sprinkling infants, which there is no Scripture for, telling people they are ordinances; all such ordinances we deny; but the ordinances of God we own. And doth not the scripture say, he that adds or diminishes, the plagues are added unto him [Rev 22:18f]? (More under Mat 10:22)

IP4:147 (1671): Those who are unlearned and unstable in the mystery of truth, are wresters of Scripture [2 Pet 3:16]. They cannot understand things as they are, not having the key; and so they wrest them, and strive to make them speak, as they apprehend and would have them. And here in this state, in this wisdom, is both adding to, and diminishing from, the holy words of truth [Rev 22:18f]; for in many places they add of their own conceivings, and in other places diminish from the drift and intent of God's Spirit.

WPR 599 (WPT 400, 1694): It is one of the dreadful sayings in the book of God, that he that adds to the words of the prophecy of this book, God will add the plagues written in this book [Rev 22:18]. To keep back the counsel of God, is as terrible; for he that takes away from the words of the prophecy of the book, God shall take away his part out of the book of life [Rev 22:19]. And truly, it has great caution in it to those that use the name of the Lord, to be well assured the Lord speaks, that they may not be found of the number of those that add to the words of the testimony of the prophecy which the Lord giveth them to bear; nor yet to mince or diminish the same, both being so very offensive to God.
