9:1 Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?

GF3:274 (1659): And for the ministers' maintenance, the apostle said, "Have I not power to eat, and power to drink? [1 Cor 9:4]" (And Christ said, "Freely ye have received, freely give [Mat 10:8].") This ... was spoken among the saints who were a vineyard [1 Cor 9:7], and to whom spiritual things had been sown [1 Cor 9:11], and to such whose hope they were made partakers of [1 Cor 9:10]. But hirelings and those that teach for filthy lucre [Tit 1:11], "that mind earthly things" [Phil 3:19], that seek for gain from their quarter [Isa 56:11], that "bear rule by their means" [Jer 5:31], are all out from this, and ... made the earth a wilderness [Isa 14:17]. And such got not out the wheat, and ploughed but in vain, which is the ploughing of the wicked, which is sin [Prov 21:4]

GF3:10 (Edward Burrough, 1659): And the apostles eat only of the fruit of the vineyard that they had planted, and the milk of the flock which they kept [1 Cor 9:7], by the free gift of the people, whom they had begotten to the faith; and to whom they sowed spiritual things, it was but as a small matter if they reaped their carnal things [1 Cor 9:11]; and though as a free gift they would do it, yet the apostle said he would not make the gospel of Christ chargeable [1 Th 2:9].

MFU 56 (1653): I see in the eternal light that no man that goes to the service of the Lord and so be cast into prison & be taken from his outward being & family ought not to maintain himself in prison at his own charge; it is contrary to all saints' practice in scripture, for the apostles said no man goeth a warfare at his own charge [1 Cor 9:7]. So ... they that go a warfare according to the moving of the Lord are in the Lord's work, that stand still & confess Christ come in the flesh [1 Jn 4:2]....

JN1:184 (1653): let them who say they are ministers make proof of their ministry in power, and not in getting a few words whereby to deceive you and the people [Rom 16:18]; but let them first sow spiritual things before they reap carnal [1 Cor 9:11]; first beget a people out of the world into the Spirit and then they shall not need to contend with them about food and raiment nor sue them at the law; first plant, then eat.

GF3:379 (1659): For they would have made their gospel to stink, if they had come into all nations to preach the gospel [Mat 24:14], and then after they had preached it, if their hearers would not have given them maintenance, to have petitioned to the supreme authority of the nation, and have haled their hearers into courts, to assizes, sessions, and benches.... They would have been but deceivers, and pretenders of glad tidings, and bringers of trouble to the nation, and seekers of themselves, and for themselves. And this would not have been to do the work which the Lord Jesus Christ sent them about. They would not have been preachers of the gospel that "live of the gospel" [1 Cor 9:14], such as might use their power and would not [1 Cor 9:12].

GF8:30 (1670): Let that be mortified that would get up to grieve or quench the spirit [Eph 4:10, 1 Th 5:19], for that will corrupt your reason, understanding, and knowledge; and that which gives you to know God and Christ, that is life eternal [John 17:3]. And all have a care that you do not abuse the power [1 Cor 9:18], nor crucify to yourselves the seed afresh [Heb 6:6], but let that be crucified by the seed; in which seed you have life eternal.

IP3:482 (1671): Did I, or any of us, ever affirm, that the forbearance of the means was the way to attain the end? But the setting up or using a false means is not the way to attain the true end. "So run," said the apostle, "that ye may obtain [1 Cor 9:24]." Did he not forbid all running, but the right running? The praying of the fleshly birth, or in the will, and according to the wisdom of the flesh, is not the means or way to obtain the everlasting kingdom; but the prayers of the true birth are.

IP3:89f (1668): he saith, "No man upon the earth can, or ought to judge of the doctrine of a prophet, that hath a commission from God." Observ. Cannot he judge, who hath the anointing [1 Jn 2:27]? ... Judge not according to the appearance, (saith Christ), but judge righteous judgment, John 7:24. Did Christ absolutely forbid men from judging concerning him, or his doctrine and miracles, or did he not rather direct them how they might judge aright? I speak as to wise men, judge ye what I say, 1 Cor 10:15. The apostle had a commission from God, & yet he did not bar men from judging of his words, but bid them judge: and the same apostle saith, Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the others judge, 1 Cor 14:29.

JN1:165 (1653): The bread the saints break is the body of Christ, and the cup they drink is the blood of Christ [1 Cor 10:16], and all made to drink into one spirit [1 Cor 12:13]. And the cup they take is a little bread and wine, and they call that a sacrament, which there is no scripture for, and so show forth the spirit of error [1 Jn 4:6].

RBA 298f (1678, XI.7): the form of this worship is so naked and void of all outward and worldly splendor that all occasion for man's wisdom to be exercised in that superstition and idolatry hath no lodging here; and so there being also an inward quietness and retiredness of mind, the witness of God [1 Jn 5:9] ariseth in the heart, and the Light of Christ shineth whereby the soul cometh to see its own condition. And there being many joined together in this same work, there is an inward travail and wrestling; and also, as the measure of Grace is abode in, an overcoming of the power and spirit of darkness; and thus we are often greatly strengthened and renewed in the spirits of our minds [Eph 4:23] without a word, and we enjoy and possess the holy fellowship and "communion of the body and blood of Christ [1 Cor 10:16]," by which our inward man is nourished and fed. Which makes us not to dote upon outward water and bread and wine in our spiritual things.

MFS 33 (1660): ...they that deny this Spirit, and the teaching thereof, are not of this body, nor do [they] drink of this cup of the New Testament [Luk 22:20, 1 Cor 11:25]. They are drinking of the cup of fornication and idolatry [Rev 17:2], for the apostle said they could not sit at the Lord's table and the table of devils. They could not drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils [1 Cor 10:21]. So they that drink not the cup of the Spirit (new) in the kingdom [Mat 26:29], let them read in their own bosoms what they are drinking of.

RBA 379, RBAF 332 (1678, XIII.3): I say, if [after taking outward communion] thou findest thy soul yet barren, yea hungry, and ready to starve for want of something thou lonsest for; know, that Light, that discovers thy iniquity to thee, that shows thee thy barrenness, thy nakedess, thy emptiness, is that body that thou must partake of, and feed upon; but that till, by forsaking inquity, thou turnest to it, comest unto it, receivest it, though thou mayest hunger after it, thou cast not be satisfied with it; for it "hath no communion with darkness" [2 Cor 6:14], nor canst thou "drink of the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils," and be "partaker of the Lord's table and the the table of devils" (1 Cor 10:21).

GF6:45 (1679): And the apostle saith, "Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat [1 Cor 10:25]." This he speaks to the Corinthians, who were Gentiles before their conversion: And so these things sold, were in the Gentiles' shambles; not in the Jews' shambles, where only the clean beasts and fowls were sold, but at Corinth, or amongst the Corinthian shambles, where both were sold. For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof [Psa 24:1, 1 Cor 10:26]; "And God saw every thing that he had made, and behold it was very good." Gen 1:31.

MFU 469f (1700): Now see how contrary our practice is to the apostles, when we must not go to a burial of the people of the world, nor bid them to any of our burials, or do that which is moderate and of a good report, as to meats and drinks etc. Again read 1 Cor 10:27: "If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake." This is more than a birth or burial, which is needful & necessary. Away with these whimsical narrow imaginations, and let the Spirit of God which he hath given us, lead us & guide us. And let us stand fast in that liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and not be entangled again into bondage [Gal 5:1] in observing proscriptions, in outward things which will not profit, nor cleanse the inward man [cf Luk 11:39].

GF5:6 (1674): And whether, therefore, "you eat or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Cor 10:31. Now there is no waster, drunkard, glutton, that can eat and drink to the glory of God; but to the dishonouring God, devouring and destroying the creatures, and consuming them upon their lusts [Jas 4:3], and feeding themselves without the fear [Jude 1:12] of God: and if all Christians did mind this, ... there would be no drunkard, no destroyer, no devourer, nor waster of God's creatures found in Christendom.

RBA 450, RBAF 408 (1678, XV.8): The apostle commands us, that "whether we eat or drink, or whatever we do, we do it all to the glory of God [1 Cor 10:31].: But I judge none will be so impudent as to affirm that in the use of these sports and games, God is glorified. If any should so say, they would declare that they neither knew God nor his glory: and experience abundantly proves that in the practice of these things, men mind ... nothing more than the satisfaction of their own carnal lusts, wills and appetites. WTG 94 (Susanna Morris, 1752): On 5th day the 20th went to Winchester, 17 miles, when although with a small company of Friends at an evening meeting, and next morning at another meeting, we fared better than could (by any appearance) be expected, but I may truly say that the Lord required them to get inward to a more close engagement of the heart and soul to know how the matter betwixt God and their own souls was, for all that we do ought to be done to the glory and honour of God [1 Cor 10:31].
