6:1 After these things Jesus went [GBT: +his way] over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of [G: which is; T: nigh to a city called] Tiberias.

6:2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw [T: had seen] his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

6:4 And [G: Now] the passover [T: Easter], a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

6:7 Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is [BT: are] not sufficient for them, that every one of them [BT: man] may take [T: have] a little.

6:8 [GT: Then said unto him] One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him [GT: omit] ,

6:9 There is a lad [G: little boy; B: little lad] here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small [GBT: omit] fishes: but what are they [T: is that] among so many?      qtext

6:10 And Jesus said, Make the men [GBT: people] sit down. Now [BT: omit] there was much grass in the [G: that] place. So [G: Then; T: And] the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

6:11 And Jesus took the loaves [GBT: bread]; and when he had given [GT: gave] thanks, he [GT: and] distributed [GBT: gave] to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

6:12 [G: +And] When they were filled [G: were satisfied; BT: had eaten enough], he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain [GBT: broken meat which (BT: that) remaineth], that nothing be lost.

6:13 Therefore [G: Then; BT: And] they gathered them [GBT: it] together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments [GBT: broken meat] of the five barley loaves, which [BT: +broken meat] remained over and above [GBT: omit] unto them that had eaten.

IP3:19f (1667): We ... laid out as much of our money as others, ... and as much of our labour [Isa 55:2]; and ... some of us had as much of that which they feed on, and call bread, as they have now. Yet when the Lord brought us to the true balance [Prov 16:11G], we found it not to be bread, nor able to give the soul true satisfaction. The bread was not that which we then called bread, but that which we overlooked, and wist not what it was [Exo 16:15]. But the eternal life which was hid with the father [1 Jn 1:2], and is manifested in the Son, and made known to the soul (as the Son is manifested to it, and revealed in it [Gal 1:16]), that is bread indeed, that is meat which perisheth not [John 6:27], but will endure when all literal and outward knowledge of God and Christ fails, and [falls] short of satisfying that hunger of the soul, which is after the substance itself.

EQ 109 (James Nayler, 1658): Now seeing he has appeared who is from everlasting [Prov 8:23, Mic 5:2] and changes not [Heb 13:8], here is an everlasting trial for you all, all sorts of professors, whether you profess him from the letter or the light; come try whether Christ is in you [2 Cor 13:5]. Measure your life and weigh your profession with that which cannot deceive you [Tit 1:2], which has stood and will stand forever, for he is sealed of the Father [John 6:27].

IP3:170 (1672): These are the two great duties we are taught, To love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and spirit; and our neighbor as ourselves [Mat 22:37,39]. And these we learn by believing him him whom God sent [John 6:29], and receiving the seed of life from him; in the growth whereof in us we live, and are made one with him, and partakers of the ability which is of him. For not by working of ourselves do we attain to this; but by the working of his powerful life in us, through his mercy to us.

MFU 98, HPS 462 (To the prisoners in Lancaster Castle, 1654): My dear hearts, be faithful in every particular to your own measure of grace, made manifest and enjoyed; and in that which is eternal, wait continually; I charge you in the presence of the living God, that you do not neglect your several measures, which the Lord God of life and power hath given you to profit withal [1 Cor 12:7]; that so you may come to receive living virtue from the living God, and be fed with the living bread [John 6:51], and drink of the living water [John 4:10f] of the spiritual rock, which they drank of in the wilderness [1 Cor 10:4].

HPS 49 (Sarah Blackborow, 1658): A love there is which doth not cease, to the seed of God in you all; and therefore doth invite you every one, priest and people, to return into it, that into Wisdom's house you may come [Prov 9:1-6], where there is a feast provided of things well refined [Isa 25:6], and the living bread of God is known and fed upon [John 6:51], and the fruit of the vine drunk of [Mat 26:29], and the unity in the Spirit witnessed, the well-beloved of the Father is here [Mar 12:6], and this is he who is the fairest of ten thousand [Song 1:16/5:10], there is no spot or wrinkle in him [Song 4:7/Eph 5:27]....

IP2:263 (1661): That which man conceiveth concerning the Scriptures, is not the pure milk of the word [1 Pet 2:2]...; that is it which hath the immediate life, virture, and true nourishment in it. And this must be returned back into the treasury, and not held in the earthly part, in the earthly will and understanding, but received from the life again when it is again needed; yea, this have I often known, that when I have been in great distress, I have received fresh comfort form the Lord; but running to that afterwards, it never was able to comfort me, but more deeply wounded me. And thus hath the Lord been teaching me to live upon himself, and not upon any thing received from him, but upon the life itself, the mercy, the good pleasure, which proportions out the living bread daily [John 6:51/Mat 6:11] to the living birth.

WTG 293 (Ann Moore, 1756): may the Lord... feed their souls with living bread [John 6:51] as freely as they fed us poor servants with temporal bread.

GF8:155 (1678): in the old covenant they were not to eat the blood of beasts, or any blood [Lev 17:14]; but in the new covenant Christ tells you, "Except ye do eat my flesh, and drink my blood, ye have no part in me [John 6:53/13:8]": for as by Adam and Eve, their eating that which God forbad, came death [Gen 3]; so if Adam and Eve's sons and daughters have life again, it is by eating of that which Christ commands; and as by eating came death, so by eating cometh life....

HPS 176 (Katharine Evans and Sarah Chevers, prisoners of the Inquisition, 1662): He said, If we did not eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God, we had no life in us [John 6:53]. We said, the flesh and blood of Christ is spiritual, and we do feed upon it daily; for that which is begotten of God in us, can no more live without spiritual food, than our temporal bodies can without temporal food.

JSS 23 (17–): To know God and Christ is life eternal. He is in all; all have of his fulness, and yetthousands are dead because they do not know him; they eat not his spiritual flesh, nor drink his spiritual blood, and so cannot live by him [John 6:53]. "He that eateth me, shall live by me." says he [John 6:57].

And here we know and enjoy the thing shadowed out under the law spiritually, eating that which is meat indeed, and drinking that which is drink indeed, even the flesh and blood of the Son of man [John 6:55]; in which we feel and partake of his nature, his virtue, his life, his substance, and both take it into us, and put it upon us [Gal 3:27]; so that we know Christ both to be our food and clothing; and in the birth, nature, and Spirit which is of him, cannot be deceived concerning him.

IP3:45 (1667): Is it not as necessary that the eternal word be made flesh inwardly [John 1:14], that so the children may feed on him [John 6:56], as it was to take on him an outward body of flesh, to suffer and die for them, and to fulfil all righteousness [Mat 3:15], both of the law of the letter, and of the law of the Spirit in?

(John 6:60)

IP2:455 (1666): How may this principle, seed, or pearl, be purchased and possessed? [Mat 13:45f] Ans. By dying to a man's own wisdom and will. There is not another way. For the light is wholly contrary to man, as he stands in the alienation from God. It crosseth his spirit, his thoughts, his desires, his knowledge, his reason, his understanding; even all that is of himself. He must therefore consult with none of these, put prefer the little, pure demonstration of the light of Christ's Spirit above all these, and stand in the parting with and loss of them all for ever. Oh! this is an hard saying, who can bear it [John 6:60]? Surely none but those that are taught and learn of the Father [John 6:45], can thus come to give up and follow the light of the Son.

(John 6:63)

[Other texts citing John 6:63: MFS 32 (John 3:5f)]

IP3:349f (1675): [quotes John 6:63] As if he had said, I am speaking of the soul's food; I am speaking of the heavenly bread; I am speaking of Spirit and life; I am speaking of the mystery, which ye look upon and understand as outwardly intended by me, and so miss of the mystery of the Spirit, wherein is the quickening virtue, and look only at the outward body or flesh, which, without the Spirit, profiteth not, nor ever can profit man.

WPR 598f, WPT 399 (1694): A dry doctrinal ministry, however found in words, can reach but the ear, and is but a dream at the best: There is another soundness, that is soundest of all, viz. Christ the Power of God [1 Cor 1:24]. This is the Key of David, that opens and none shuts, and shuts, and none can open [Rev 3:7]; as the oil to the lamp, and the soul to the body, so is that to the best of words. Which made Christ to say, "My words they are Spirit, and they are life" [John 6:63]; that is, they are from life, and therefore they make you alive, that receive them. If the disciples that had lived with Jesus, were to stay at Jerusalem till they received it [Acts 1:4]; so must we wait to receive, before we minister, if we will turn people from darkness to light, and from Satan's power to God [Acts 26:18].

JSS 37: God is a spirit [John 4:24]; why? because he quickens and giveth life, or maketh alive; his influence on the soul is felt enlivening, animating, and invigorating its faculties. The beginning and progress in all true religion is in God as a spirit; the renewing of the holy ghost [Tit 3:5], is the comfort and consolation of the begotten of God; it is the very life of God, that is food for the soul; the flesh and blood of the son, which the saints feed on and live by, and which he explains thus: "It is the spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing." [John 6:63] Indeed, if ye can receive it, it is the very "blood of God."

(John 6:68)

IP3:34 (1667): Why should you not open to him that knocks in his holy power [Rev 3:20], and in the demonstrations of his Spirit to your conscience? Why should a subtle device of the deceiver be let in and hugged by you, to cause you to thrust him back from your hearts who is the Word of eternal life [1 Jn 1:1], and with whom are the words of eternal life [John 6:68]?

IP3:179 (1668): [part of long exposition of John 7:17] It is true, the Son's doctrine is the Father's will, and thou canst not do the Father's will, but as thou receivest the Son's doctrine..... Now, the question is concerning the way thou mayest attain this.... Which is, not by entering into reasonings and disputes about these things whereof thou doubtest, but ... by coming into obedience to the Father in that which he hath already made manifest; for in that light (to them that believe in it) , and in obedience thereto (be it ever so little, or the manifestation ever so small), the Father will reveal more, and give to that heart and mind to be sensible of what is of him, and what is of the enemy, so far as it is needful for it as yet to know.

Then immediately I consulted not with flesh and blood [Gal 1:16], but was made willing to give up to the obedience of his will revealed in my conscience, and so I came to receive the faith of that principle which the Quakers do profess, and by it am I joined to them, not only in head, but in heart.....

(John 7:37)

MFU 261 (1658): So the Lord God of life and power keep you firm and constant every one to your measures of him ... who saith, If any man thirst let him come to me and drink [John 7:37], who is the living fountain which is set open, this is the river, the streams whereof doth make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacle of the most high [Psa 46:4], this is the fountain of gardens, a well of living water, and streams from Lebanon [Song 4:15]....

(John 7:37f)

MFS 29f (1660): ...their doctrine has been and now is that none must look for nor expect revelation nor inspiration by the Spirit of God. So they do what in them lies to stop this current of life and spirit, which Christ Jesus, the fountain of all life [Psa 36:9], has set open, who in the last day of the feast, "stood up and proclaimed [quotes John 7:37f]." This he spoke of the Spirit, which these teachers of the world would stop, the pourings of which spirit is unlimited to son or daughter [Joel 2:28], Jew or Gentile, barbarian, Scythian, bond or free [Gal 3:28/Col 3:11], time or place, or condition, but according to the good pleasure of his will [Eph 1:5], who is the author and fountain of it.

GF3:226 (1659): None come to witness their conversation in heaven [Phil 3:20], but who are come to witness Christ within them, the substance, the second Adam [1 Cor 15:45/47], who redeems out of the earth [Rev 14:3]. And the apostle brought the saints to the light that shined in their hearts, &c. [2 Cor 4:6], and walking in this light [1 Jn 1:7] was not a serving of bellies [Rom 16:18]. That light shining in them, and believing in the light Christ [John 12:36], "out of their belly flowed rives of living waters [John 7:38]," and such made not divisions, but were in unity in the light, and in fellowship.

IP4:258f (1671): ...we were not only invited to the waters [Isa 55:1], but taught to come thereto; and when we came, we were not sent away empty [Luk 1:53], but had the water of life given us [Rev 21:6]; which became such a well, as out of it flow streams of living water [John 7:38]. Ah, blessed be the Lord! Did we ever think, in our dry, dead, barren estate, to have seen such a day as this?

IP3:494 (1672): ...when the river of life is found, when the well of life is received, and the water springs up, the soul draws it from the spring, and drinks it with unspeakable joy. This metaphor, or similitude, is explained by the evangelist John, 7:39. The receiving of the Spirit, the receiving of the substance, belongs to the Christian's state, as the receiving of the figures did to the Jew's state. When the Spirit is received, the river, the well of life, is received; and then the waters thereof flow, and are drawn and drunk of.

(John 7:46)

SIW 55 (Ruth Alcock Follows, 1757): ...it is the Divine Monitor from heaven that is still the teacher of his people. It is He that yet speaks as never man spoke [John 7:46], and he cannot be removed into a corner [Isa 30:20].

(John 7:49)

GF7:55 (1653): But look at the captain Jesus Christ, who hath passed before, who was tempted (the captain of our salvation [Heb 2:10]) with the same temptations to worship the devil; and that if thou wouldst worship the devil, thou shouldst have the glory of the world [Mat 4:8f]; if not, be called a devil, as Christ was, and be called a mad man, as he was [John 10:20]; and that none followed him, but a cursed people, (as they said.) [John 7:49] And they that worship the devil, gave those titles to him. And thou shalt lose thy good name, and be a laughing stock to them that worship the devil, and as a derision among them, and a mark for every one of them to shoot at, and the drunkards to make songs of. This is the portion of them, who deny the worship of the world, and the glory, and the favour, and the evil fashions thereof, and cannot fashion themselves to it; who are tempted to all these things. But it is no sin to be tempted; but standing in the power of the Almighty God, ye will be enabled to stand against, and above all the wiles of satan [Eph 6:11].

(John 7:52)

[Other texts citing John 7:52: GF7:262 (Mat 3:12, Rev 14:14f), IP4:263f (Mat 11:19a)]

RBA 152f (1678, V/VI:24): ... they go about to set up their natural power and will, with one consent denying that this little Seed, this small appearance of the Light, is that supernatural saving grace of God given to every man to save him.... So Christ, as he met with opposition from all kinds of professors in his outward appearance, so doth he now in his inward. It was the meanness of his outward man that made many despise him, saying, "Is this not the son of the carpenter? Are not his brethren and sisters among us [Mark 6:3]? Is this not a Galilean? And came there ever a prophet out of Galilee [John 7:52]?".... So the meanness of this appearance makes the crafty Jesuits, the pretended rational Socinians, and the learned Arminians overlook it; desiring rather something that they might exercise their subtilty, reason, and learning about, and use the liberty of their own wills.
