WPR 333f (1673): Luke says, that many took in hand to relate from eye-witnesses the things most surely believed, &c. [Luk 1:1f] Now ‛tis taken for granted that John wrote many years after Luke.... Matthew and Mark were not many; and to this day we see no more than these four in our Bibles, and therefore many such writings [were] lost; and if lost, then the Scriptures [are] not perfect; and if imperfect, how can they be the rule of faith, since the rule of faith must be perfect?

GF7:168 (1659): For they are all fallen spirits, and not ministers of the word [Luke 1:2], nor the gospel, nor of Christ that never fell [1 Pet 2:22], (which destroys the devil and his works [1 Jn 3:8] in the fall,) that are quarrelling, and siding, and disputing, and contending, and striving about outward things.
(Luk 1:3)
IP1:329f (1660): Object. But in the New Testament Luke styles Theophilus most excellent [Luk 1:3]; and Paul, speaking to Festus, said, Most noble Festus [Acts 26:25]; which are terms or expressions of honor and reference. Ans. Christ did promise his disciples and ministers that he would be with them, and give them what to say. Now if nobility and true excellency did appear in any persons, and he led them by his spirit to acknowledge it, this is no sufficient warrant for men to do the like in their own wills; or to give such titles to persons being in authority, whether they be such persons or no. Luke knew Theophilus to be excellent, and he was led by the spirit of God to style him excellent; for by the spirit of God he wrote the scripture, Luke 1:3, wherein he so styles him.

IP3:31 (1667): It hath pleased the Lord, as he manifested his Christ gloriously before the apostasy, so to manifest him again. For he was not only born (in the flesh) of the virgin Mary [Mat 1:16, 20-25]; but he was also born in the Spirit of the woman clothed with the sun, which had the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars [Rev 12:1]. She also brought forth the man-child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron [Rev 12:5].

Luk 1:7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years [GBT: age] . qtext
Luk 1:8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
Luk 1:9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
Luk 1:10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense [GBT: without in prayer, while the incense was burning].
Luk 1:11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

Luk 1:18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man [BT: old], and my wife well stricken in years [G: is of great age].
Luk 1:19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
Luk 1:20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed [G: done], because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. qtext
Luk 1:21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
Luk 1:22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned [G: made signs] unto them, and remained speechless [G: dumb].
Luk 1:23 And it came to pass, that [G: fourtuned] , as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished [GBT: days (T: time) of his office were fulfilled (B: were out; T: was out)] , he departed to his own house.
Luk 1:24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

GF8:151 (1678): Is not this the stone that became a great mountain, and fills the whole earth, which smote and broke to pieces the iron, clay, brass, silver, and gold image, or monarchs, which were as mountains [Dan 2:35]? And this stone which becomes a great mountain, sets up a kingdom which shall never have an end [Luke 1:33, cf Dan 2:44]. IP3:46 (1667): He that knoweth the substance, the seed of the kingdom, the birth of the Spirit, knoweth the flesh and blood which is of the seed.... For the flesh and blood of our nature was not his own naturally, but only as he pleased to take it upon him and make it his. But that whereof he formeth us, and which he giveth us to eat and drink, is the flesh and blood of his own nature.... Happy, oh happy is he that is of it, who is taken out of and formed of him (as Eve was of Adam), and so becomes flesh of his flesh, and bone of his bone [Gen 2:23]! Then will he know the mystery of life, feed on the thing itself [Luk 1:35], and not stumble about appearances and expressions, as those that our out of and from the thing itself do, through the darkness of their mind, and because of their ignorance of the thing spoken of in the Scriptures.
JWJM 139f (17–) [message by elderly Friend about increase in wealth in the RSOF over time]: marks of outward wealth and greatness appeared on many in our meetings of ministers and elders, and as these things became more prevalent, the powerful overshadowings of the Holy Ghost [Luk 1:35] were less manifest in the Society....
JSS 21 (17–) : The Father, by the overshadowing of the holy ghost [Luk 1:35] upon the willing mind, which embraces and yields to the visitations, operations, and wooings of his love, begetteth and produceth a true and real birth of divine life, a conception and birth of that which is truly and properly his only begotten forever, being one in all his spiritual offspring.

GF7: 321 (1668): And Christ, who was conceived of the Holy Ghost [Mat 1:20], born of the Virgin [Mat 1:23], he is known by the Holy Ghost again, which led the holy men of God to give forth scriptures [2 Pet 1:21]; which now leads into all truth [John 16:13].

IP2:120 (1660): Christ had the name Jesus given to him, because he was to save the people from their sins [Mat 1:21]; and no man can truly and livingly know the name Jesus, further than he feels the saving virtue of it; but he that effectually feels the virtue, he indeed knows the name, and can bow at the name [Phil 3:10], feeling his lusts and enemies bowed under by the power thereof, and that raised up in him, which can worship the Father in the Spirit and in the truth [John 4:23f].

GFT 218 (1681): [Continued from under John 3:16] So now Friends, man being drove from God [Gen 3:24], the seed of the woman bruises the head of the serpent [Gen 3:15] that so man may come back again to God. And therefore, every man and woman must feel this Emmanuel (God with us) [Mat 1:23] in them, for it’s not professing the saints’ words and painting their sepulchers as the scribes and Pharisees did [Mat 23:29].
HPS 440 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): Although the woman was first in transgression, which brought in death, yet was she made by the power of the Lord, to bring in him who is the resurrection and the life [John 11:25]: For this was the promise of the Father, that the seed of the woman should bruise the serpent’s head, Gen 3:15. And it is long since fulfilled: For in the fulness of time Christ came, being born of a woman, to wit, the Virgin Mary [Mat 1:23]. So that it may be said, As by woman came in the transgression and degeneration, so by woman came in the reconciliation and restoration, to wit, Christ who came of the woman's seed: He it is, who is the healer of breaches [Psa 60:2, Amos 9:11] and restorer of our paths [Isa 58:12]: And in him male and female are made all one [Gal 3:28].
JSS 50 (17–): But generating (we may use the word generation, for Matthew calls his book, "the book of the generation of Jesus Christ [Mat 1:1],") I say, generating with the life of man, the everlasting Father takes upon, and unites unto himself our life and nature; and thus brings forth the Emmanuel state, God with man [Mat 1:23].

RBA 104 (1678, V/VI:6): It is [the doctrine of universal redemption] which maketh the preaching of Jesus Christ to be truly termed the Gospel, or an annunciation of glad tidings to all. Thus the angel declared the birth and coming of Christ to the shepherds to be (Luk 2:10), "Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people": he saith not to a few people. Now if this coming of Christ had not brought a possibility of salvation to all it should rather have been accounted bad tidings of great sorrow to most people; neither should the angel had reason to have sung "Peace on earth and good will towards men" [Luk 2:14] if the greatest part of mankind had been necessarily shut out from receiving any beniefit by it.

WPR 574, WPT 355 (1694): ... for want of staying their minds [Isa 26:3] in an humble dependence upon Him that opened their understandings, to see great things in His law [Hos 8:12], they ran out in their imaginations [Jer 23:17], and mixing them with those divine openings, brought forth a monstrous birth, to the scandal of those that feared God, and waited daily in the temple, not made with hands [Acts 7:48] for the consolation of Israel [Luk 2:25]; the Jew inward, and circumcision in Spirit [Rom 2:29].

GF5:232 (1676): [Quotes Luk 2:32] And now mark, all ye that stumble so much about Christ, the light, which lighteth every one that cometh into the world [John 1:9], who is the glory of Israel [Luk 2:32]; it seems Christ the light is not revealed to you, your darkness cannot comprehend it [John 1:5], which we witness and believe in, and see this glory of Israel, and so are become children of the light [John 12:36]; and so you are they that stumble at the light at noonday [Isa 59:10], and at revelation, for all your learning and knowledge of tongues, wisdom, and understanding; this light to be revealed to the Gentiles you stumble at....
HPS 319 (Rebecca Travers, 1669): those that ... bring forth, without being learned of the Light, have filled the world with errors and falsehoods; Babel indeed, and thou a chief builder therein [Gen 11:1-9], ignorant of the Covenant of Light, Christ the Covenant to God's people, and a Light to the Gentiles to the ends of the earth [Isa 42:6, 49:6, Luk 2:32]....
WTG 372 (Ann Moore, 1778): yea it was a time in which God’s mercy in sending his Son a light into the world [John 1:9], a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of his people [Luke 2:32] were spoken to....

GF8:105 (1676): And there was Anna a prophetess, which was eighty-four years old, who departed not from the temple, but served God with fasting and prayer night and day, "and she gave thanks unto the Lord, and spoke of Christ unto all that looked for redemption in Israel" [Luke 2:36-38]; she spoke of Christ. Here was a notable old woman of eighty-four years of age, a preacher and declarer of Christ. And you do not read that ever any despised her, or said, it was forbidden for a woman to speak in the church [1 Cor 14:34f]. But this woman is set forth for an example to all young and old women, of her love to Christ her saviour; and not only so, but a preacher of him to all that looked for redemption in Israel.

GF2: 206 (1677): They [modern Pharisees], under a pretence of preaching Christ, are destroyers and crucifiers of him, and killers of the just [Jas 5:6], not only in themselves, but are endeavouring with all their might to destroy it in others where it is born. Pharaoh and Herod slay the young Jews in the spirit as the old did [Exo 1:15-22, Mat 2:16; Rom 2:29].... That is got up to be king, which knew not suffering Joseph [Exo 1:8]. But God will plague him, and the seed will have more rest, and be better entertained in Egypt than under Herod, into whom old Pharaoh’s spirit is entered.
IP1:69 (1658): Herod did not aim at killing all the infants in Bethlehem; but he would rather kill them all, then have Christ live [Mat 2:16]. What preaching on the one hand! What running to the magistrate on the other hand! When any different way of worship did appear, as of Independency, Anabaptism, or of seeking and waiting for the truth, how they did make an head against them, and cry out against them, for fear the young child should be born and appear there! And now they see their own image brought forth there, they are at peace with them.
JWJM 231 (1762): When Saul, by the hand of Doeg, slew four score priests at once, he had a jealousy that one of them at least was confederate with David, whom he considered his enemy [1 Sam 22:17f]. Herod slaying all the male children in Bethlehem of two years old and under was an act of uncommon cruelty, but he supposed there was a male child there within that age who was likely to be king of the Jews, and finding no way to destroy him but by destroying them all, thought this the most effectual means to secure the kingdom to his own family [Mat 2:16.
