WPR 333f (1673): Luke says, that many took in hand to relate from eye-witnesses the things most surely believed, &c. [Luk 1:1f] Now ‛tis taken for granted that John wrote many years after Luke.... Matthew and Mark were not many; and to this day we see no more than these four in our Bibles, and therefore many such writings [were] lost; and if lost, then the Scriptures [are] not perfect; and if imperfect, how can they be the rule of faith, since the rule of faith must be perfect?

GF7:168 (1659): For they are all fallen spirits, and not ministers of the word [Luke 1:2], nor the gospel, nor of Christ that never fell [1 Pet 2:22], (which destroys the devil and his works [1 Jn 3:8] in the fall,) that are quarrelling, and siding, and disputing, and contending, and striving about outward things.

IP1:329f (1660): Object. But in the New Testament Luke styles Theophilus most excellent [Luk 1:3]; and Paul, speaking to Festus, said, Most noble Festus [Acts 26:25]; which are terms or expressions of honor and reference. Ans. Christ did promise his disciples and ministers that he would be with them, and give them what to say. Now if nobility and true excellency did appear in any persons, and he led them by his spirit to acknowledge it, this is no sufficient warrant for men to do the like in their own wills; or to give such titles to persons being in authority, whether they be such persons or no. Luke knew Theophilus to be excellent, and he was led by the spirit of God to style him excellent; for by the spirit of God he wrote the scripture, Luke 1:3, wherein he so styles him.

IP3:31 (1667): It hath pleased the Lord, as he manifested his Christ gloriously before the apostasy, so to manifest him again. For he was not only born (in the flesh) of the virgin Mary [Mat 1:16, 20-25]; but he was also born in the Spirit of the woman clothed with the sun, which had the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars [Rev 12:1]. She also brought forth the man-child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron [Rev 12:5].

§3 ( Luk 1:5-25)

Luk 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

Luk 1:6 And they were both righteous [G: just; T: perfect] before God, walking in all the commandments [BT: laws] and ordinances of the Lord blameless [G: without reproof; BT: that no man could find fault with them].

Luk 1:7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years [GBT: age] . qtext

Luk 1:9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

Luk 1:11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

Luk 1:13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

Luk 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. qtext

Luk 1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient [T: unbelievers] to the wisdom of the just [GBT: +men] ; to make ready a people prepared [B: ready a perfect people; T: the people ready] for the Lord. qtext

Luk 1:18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man [BT: old], and my wife well stricken in years [G: is of great age].

Luk 1:19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

Luk 1:21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

Luk 1:22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned [G: made signs] unto them, and remained speechless [G: dumb].

§4 (Luk 1:26-38)

GF6:486 (168-?) and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there is no end. Luk 1:33. And you do read that that some would not have Christ to rule over them, and what became of them that said, "We will not have this man to rule over us?" Luk 19:14. But these were not of the house of Jacob, the second birth; but of Esau, that profane person's birth, or nature [Heb 12:16].

GF8:151 (1678): Is not this the stone that became a great mountain, and fills the whole earth, which smote and broke to pieces the iron, clay, brass, silver, and gold image, or monarchs, which were as mountains [Dan 2:35]? And this stone which becomes a great mountain, sets up a kingdom which shall never have an end [Luke 1:33, cf Dan 2:44]. GF5:150 (1675): he is called the Messiah, the Immanuel [Isa 7:14], the Son of man, and the Holy Thing [Luk 1:35], and the Word of God [Rev 19:13], and the Amen [Rev 3:14], &c.

IP3:46 (1667): He that knoweth the substance, the seed of the kingdom, the birth of the Spirit, knoweth the flesh and blood which is of the seed.... For the flesh and blood of our nature was not his own naturally, but only as he pleased to take it upon him and make it his. JWJM 139f (17–) [message by elderly Friend about increase in wealth in the RSOF over time]: marks of outward wealth and greatness appeared on many in our meetings of ministers and elders, and as these things became more prevalent, the powerful overshadowings of the Holy Ghost [Luk 1:35] were less manifest in the Society....

JSS 21 (17–) : The Father, by the overshadowing of the holy ghost [Luk 1:35] upon the willing mind, which embraces and yields to the visitations, operations, and wooings of his love, begetteth and produceth a true and real birth of divine life, a conception and birth of that which is truly and properly his only begotten forever, being one in all his spiritual offspring.

§5 (Luk 1:39-56)

IP2:120 (1660): Christ had the name Jesus given to him, because he was to save the people from their sins [Mat 1:21]; and no man can truly and livingly know the name Jesus, further than he feels the saving virtue of it; but he that effectually feels the virtue, he indeed knows the name, and can bow at the name [Phil 3:10], feeling his lusts and enemies bowed under by the power thereof, and that raised up in him, which can worship the Father in the Spirit and in the truth [John 4:23f].

GFT 218 (1681): [Continued from under John 3:16] So now Friends, man being drove from God [Gen 3:24], the seed of the woman bruises the head of the serpent [Gen 3:15] that so man may come back again to God. GF2: 206 (1677): They [modern Pharisees], under a pretence of preaching Christ, are destroyers and crucifiers of him, and killers of the just [Jas 5:6], not only in themselves, but are endeavouring with all their might to destroy it in others where it is born. Pharaoh and Herod slay the young Jews in the spirit as the old did [Exo 1:15-22, Mat 2:16; Rom 2:29].... That is got up to be king, which knew not suffering Joseph [Exo 1:8]. But God will plague him, and the seed will have more rest, and be better entertained in Egypt than under Herod, into whom old Pharaoh’s spirit is entered.

IP1:69 (1658): Herod did not aim at killing all the infants in Bethlehem; but he would rather kill them all, then have Christ live [Mat 2:16]. What preaching on the one hand! What running to the magistrate on the other hand! When any different way of worship did appear, as of Independency, Anabaptism, or of seeking and waiting for the truth, how they did make an head against them, and cry out against them, for fear the young child should be born and appear there! And now they see their own image brought forth there, they are at peace with them.

JWJM 231 (1762): When Saul, by the hand of Doeg, slew four score priests at once, he had a jealousy that one of them at least was confederate with David, whom he considered his enemy [1 Sam 22:17f]. Herod slaying all the male children in Bethlehem of two years old and under was an act of uncommon cruelty, but he supposed there was a male child there within that age who was likely to be king of the Jews, and finding no way to destroy him but by destroying them all, thought this the most effectual means to secure the kingdom to his own family [Mat 2:16. Gives other examples-- slaughter of heretics].... In favor of those cruelties, every one had what they deemed a plea....
