RBA 232, RBAF 174 (1678, X.2): There may be members therefore of this catholic Church both among Heathen, Turks, Jews, and all the several sorts of Christians, men and women of integrity and simplicity of heart.... And ... this Church, though still in being, hath been oftentimes as it were invisible, in that it hath not come under the observation of the men of this world, being, as saith the Scripture (Jer 3:14), "one of a city, and two of a family." And yet, though the Church thus considered may be ... hid from wicked men, as not then gathered into a visible fellowship, yea and not observed even by some that are members of it, yet may there be notwithstanding many belong to it; as when Elias complained he was left alone (1 Ki 19:18), God answered unto him, "I have reserved to myself seven thousand men who have not bowed their knees to the image of Baal," whence the apostle argues [Rom 11:4f] the being of a remnant in his day.

GF3:365 (1659): And it is not possible to deceive the elect [Mat 24:24], it is the world that is deceived; that which hath led captive shall go into captivity [Psa 68:18]. Eve, and the first Adam [1 Cor 15:45], may be brought into transgression; but Christ the second Adam, the seed in you all, you must know, which is that which bruiseth the serpent's head [Gen 3:15], and the ground of all deceiving. And so the elect may like under for a time, and suffer; but the election shall obtain [Rom 11:7], and not him that wills, nor him that runs [Rom 9:16], but come over to the crown of honour and glory [1 Pet 5:4].

The prophets among them were still fools; yea, the spiritual man mad. Hos 9:7.

Saith the apostle, their table was their trap [Rom 11:9], there they stuck. David that had the life that gave forth the scriptures, had the lantern to his feet; and had not they a lantern before the scripture was written? Abraham, Enoch, what led them all to give forth scripture? Are not all they that have the scripture and are out of that which they were in that gave them forth, out of the light, and out of the lantern?

IP2:259 (1661): And since the apostasy, of this latter age especially, I have clearly seen in the Spirit of the Lord, that the professors' knowledge of the letter of the gospel, and cleaving to their apprehensions which they gather therefrom, is become a snare and trap to them, to keep them from feeling the power, and living in the sensibility of the virtue of the grace; even as the Jews' table (or gathered knowledge from Moses and the prophets) became their snare and trap [Psa 69:22, Rom 11:9].

When I heard it, my heart did leap for joy. Then the Lord let me see why there was none upon the earth that could speak to my condition, namely, that I might give him all the glory. For all are concluded under sin [Gal 3:22], and shut up in unbelief [Rom 11:32], as I had been, that Jesus Christ might have pre-eminence [Col 1:18], who enlightens [John 1:9], and gives grace, faith, and power. GF7:65f (1653): Ye children of the light, seek to turn many to the light, and to wisdom's gate [Prov 1:20f] bring them, that ye may all come to be door-keepers in the house of the Lord [Psa 84:10], and see what must be kept out of his house, and what to receive into the house; and own no sacrifice but that which is from the living, which is accepted of the Lord [Rom 12:1?].

IP3:511 (1675): For prayer is the breath of life, an effect of God's spiritual breathing, which no man can perform aright without the Spirit's breathing upon him. Therefore the Spirit is to be waited upon, for his breathings and holy fire, that the sacrifice may be living, and acceptable to the living God [Rom 12:1].

MFU 191 (1656): ...the Light is the condemnation of the world, and bears witness against the world that the deeds thereof are evil [John 3:19]. And this redeems from under the world's ways and customs: and the Apostle's doctrine is to the saints, be not conformable to the world but be ye transformed and renewed in your minds [Rom 12:2]. And this is that which we own, & this will carry us above and through all suffering.

JN2:220 (1655) .... your fellowship is with the form, but not in the power [2 Tim 3:5]; with men, but not with God; and so your times are in your own hands [cf Psa 31:15]; and you have resolved them beforehand; and you have a time to pray, and a time to play [cf Eccl 3:1-8]; a time to abstain from your lusts, and a time to fulfill your lusts [Rom 13:14]; a day to abstain from the world, and days to conform to the world [Rom 12:2]....

IP1:316 (1659): a Christian's life is in the spirit: "If we live in the spirit, let us also walk in the spirit." Gal 5:25. The whole life and course of a Christian is in the volume of the book [Psa 40:7f], as the Lord opens the leaves of it in him. "The gift of God, the measure of faith" given him by God [Rom 12:3, Eph 2:8], that is his rule; that is his rule of knowledge, of prophesying [Rom 12:6], of obedience [Rom 1:5]. If he keep there, if he walk according to the proportion of it, he errs not....

(Rom 12:4)

GF8:141 (1677): Now every one of these living believers are members of the living church in God, which Christ is the head of [Eph 5:23], and every member in the church hath an office [Rom 12:4]; and so every member is serviceable in the body in his office, in the light, which is over darkness, and was before it was; and in the life which is over death, and was before it was; and in the power of God, which was before the power of the serpent was. And so they are in this light, life, and power to execute their offices....

RBA 70, RBAF 53 (1678, III.3): And what master is so sottish and careless, as, having many servants, leaves them in such disorder as not to assign each his particular station, and not only the general term of doing that which is profitable? Which would leave them in various doubts, and no doubt land in confusion. Shall we then dare to ascribe unto Christ, in the ordering of his church and servants, that which in man might justly be accounted disorder and confusion? The apostle showeth this distinction well: [quotes Rom 12:6-8a] Now what Scripture rule showeth me that I ought to exhort, rather than prophesy? Or minister, rather than teach? Surely none at all. Many more difficulties of this kind occur in the life of a Christian.

GF4:281f (1661): If people be forced and driven contrary to their own consciences, gift and proportion of faith [Rom 12:6], to make shipwreck of both [1 Tim 1:19], they go out of the bounds of humanity ... into unreasonableness, and setting the whole course of nature on fire [Jas 3:6], where all the members are unruly and out of order, from the tongue [cf Jas 3:8], hand, lip, to the foot; and it is said, the unreasonable man hath not faith..., and what is not of faith is sin [Rom 14:23]; therefore to keep people in the reasonableness, is to let them have their faith, and not act contrary to it, nor contrary to a good conscience, that keeps them both in reasonableness, and nature in its course, and their members in order.

(Rom 12:9)

JN3:76 (1656): the love of the devil may be won with the serving of him, and by flattering him in his ways, in them in whom he is; but what is it worth? So may one have the love of all the world, and their friendship, but woe to that friendship which is got by sparing God's enemies, that is enmity against God. Therefore, says God, "let love be without dissimulation; abhor that which is evil, cleave to that which good [Rom 12:9]"; and that love is it which uncovers sin, which condemns sin to death, and covers it with righteousness [cf Isa 61:10]. Otherwise (saith the Scriptures) "he that covereth sin shall not prosper [Prov 28:13]."

HPS 526 (London Women's Meeting, 1685): we are come to our light, spirit, grace, and anointing within [1 Jn 2:27], which is our own, which at first convinced us, and which doth teach us to be doers of the Word of God [Jas 1:22], and to live righteously [Tit 2:12], and to practice the true religion; and them that do not, the spirit of the Lord moveth us, and teacheth us to admonish and exhort them to forsake the evil, and cleave to the good [Rom 12:9]....

GF8:191 (1680): And be kind and courteous one towards another, all studying to be quiet [1 Th 1:11], and to excel one another in virtue, and purity, and holiness, and righteousness, and godliness, in all your words, and lives, and conversations; so that you may all walk as become saints and christians, every one esteeming and preferring one another above yourselves [Phil 2:3/Rom 12:10] in the truth, in meekness, and lowliness of mind, and humility; for he that inhabits eternity, dwells with an humble heart [Isa 57:15].

WTG 226 (Elizabeth Hudson, 1750): Perhaps that natural partiality with which we view ourselves and what we do, may place our performances in a fairer light than they will bear, and this may cast such a shade over others that it will be no hard matter for us to give self the preference, which if once concluded on as due will be looked for from others. This sort of sentiment if indulged in will introduce into the mind a long train of unprofitable suggestions which will disqualify us for the ministry of the word which teaches that each should prefer an other to himself [Rom 12:10/Phil 2:3] and that none should think more highly of himself than he ought [Rom 12:3].

JWJM 177 (1772): In this love we can say that Jesus is the Lord, and the reformation in our souls, manifested in a full reformation in our lives, wherein all things are new and all things are of God [2 Cor 5:17f]—in this the desire of gain is subjected. And employment is honestly followed in the light of Truth, and people become diligent in business, "fervent in spirit serving the Lord" [Rom 12:11]—here the name is opened. "This is the name by which he shall be called: The Lord our Righteousness [Jer 23:6]."
