Luk 19:1 And[G: Now when] Jesus entered and passed[BT: he entered in and went] through Jericho.     qtext

Luk 19:2 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief [G: the chief receiver; T: a ruler] among the publicans, and he was rich [BT: +also].

Luk 19:3 And he sought [B: sought means; T: made means] to see Jesus who he was [GBT: who (BT: what) he should be]; and could not for the press, because he was little of [GT: of a low] stature.

Luk 19:4 And [GT: Wherefore] he ran before, and climbed [T: ascended] up into a sycomore [GBT: wild fig] tree to [G: that he might] see him: for he was to pass [GT: should come; B: was to come] that [T: +same] way.

Luk 19:5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus [BT: Zache], make haste, and come down [GB: come down at once; T: at once come down]; for to day I must abide at thy house.

Luk 19:6 And he made haste, and came down [GBT: came down hastily], and received him joyfully.

Luk 19:7 And when they saw it, they all [GB: all saw it, they] murmured [T: grouched], saying, That he was [T: He is] gone to be guest [GBT: gone in to lodge (BT: tarry)] with a man that is a sinner [G: sinful man].

Luk 19:8 And Zacchaeus stood [GBT: +forth], and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation [GB: taken from any man by forged calculation; T: done any man wrong], I restore him fourfold.

[restore fourfold: cf 2 Sam 12:6]     qtext

Luk 19:9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation [T: health] come to this house, forsomuch as he [T: it] also is [GBT: +become] a son [G: the son; BT: the child] of Abraham.     qtext

DFR 77 (1774): Do what thou canst to set a good example to thy children and neighbors, in relation to the emancipation of thy slaves; for the day is hastening over, and it would be a dreadful thing to die and leave all thy colored people in slavery to thy posterity. It would be better to leave thy children beggars! §123 ( §136 H-Q Mat 25:14-30 | Luk 19:11-28)

Luk 19:11 And as [G: whiles] they heard these things, he added [G: contintued] and spake a parable [T: thereto a similitude], because he was nigh [G: near] to Jerusalem, and because [GT: +also] they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.

Luk 19:12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and [G: +so; T: +then] to return [GBT: come again].

Luk 19:13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds [GB: pieces of money], and said [BT: saying] unto them, Occupy [T: buy and sell] till I come.

Luk 19:14 But [G: Now] his citizens hated him, and sent a message [G: an ambassage; T: messengers] after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.     qtext

Luk 19:15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having [GT: when he was come again, and had; B: that when he had] received the [GBT: his] kingdom, then [G: that; B: and returned; T omits] he commanded these [G: the] servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the [GT: gave his] money, that he might know how much [T: to wit what] every man had gained by trading [G: gained; B: done in occupying; T: done].

Luk 19:16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound [GB: piece] hath gained [GT: increased] ten pounds [GB: pieces; T: pound].

Luk 19:17 And he said unto him, Well, thou [GT omit] good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have [GT: take] thou authority over ten cities.     qtext

Luk 19:18 And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound [GB: piece] hath gained [GT: increased] five pounds [GB: pieces; T: pound].

Luk 19:19 And he said likewise to him [GBT: to the same he said], Be thou also [GBT: +ruler] over five cities.

Luk 19:20 And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is [G: behold; T: behold here] thy pound [GB: piece], which I have kept laid up [GB: laid up; T: kept] in a napkin:     qtext

Luk 19:21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere [GBT: a straight] man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.

Luk 19:22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked [G: O evil; BT: thou evil] servant. Thou knewest [B: Knewest thou] that I was an austere [GBT: am a straight] man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:     qtext

Luk 19:23 Wherefore then [B: And wherefore] gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own [G: it] with usury [GBT: vantage]?

Luk 19:24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound [GB: that piece; T: that pound], and give it to [GT omit] him that hath ten pounds [GB: pieces; T: pound].

Luk 19:25 (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds [GB: pieces; T pound].)

Luk 19:26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath [GT: all them that have, it] shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him [B: shall be taken away even that he hath].

Luk 19:27 But [GBT: Moreover] those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.     qtext

Luk 19:28 And when he had thus spoken, he went before [GBT: went (T: proceeded) forth before], ascending up to Jerusalem.

For the light is the same in the male, and in the female, which cometh from Christ, he by whom the world was made [John 1:3], and so Christ is one in all, and not divided [1 Cor 1:13]; and who is it that dare stop Christ’s mouth? that now is come to reign in his sons and daughters, Christ in the male, and Christ in the female [Gal 3:28]? and you that will not have him to reign in the female as well as the male, you are against scripture, and will not have him to reign over you [Luk 19:14]....

IP3:178 (1668): He that is faithful to the light of the Spirit (and to the discerning that is thereby) in the little [Luk 19:17], he shall receive more, he shall have his light and discerning thereby increased, as his need requireth. DFR 54 (17–) : I had a sight that, if I were obedient to my duty, I might be made a useful member of the church, and as a pillar in God’s house [Rev 3:12]; but having so long rebelled, I now had no reason to expect that I should be as useful as I might have been, had I rendered early obedience to the heavenly call. However, it appeared necessary, if little were committed to my care, to be faithful in that little [Luk 19:17].

Mat 21:3 And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them [GBT: let them go].

Mat 21:4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled [T: to fulfill that] which was spoken by the prophet, saying,

Mat 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass [GBT: +used to the yoke].

[cf Zech 9:9]

Mat 21:8 And a very great multitude [G: a great mulitude; BT: many of the people] spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.

Mat 21:9 And [GBT: Moreover] the multitudes [GT: people] that went before, and [GT: +they also] that followed [BT: came after], cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is [GT: be] he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

GF5:78 (1674): "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh to thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, upon a colt, the foal of an ass." [Zech 9:9] Now consider, did he not come so into your Jerusalem, this Immanuel [Isa 7:14], this Messiah? and did not many of your daughters rejoice, and cried Hosanna? [Mat 21:6-9 ||] But your priests that were blind, and the rest of the scribes and Pharisees and Jews, railed at him, and blasphemed against him. [quotes Zech 9:10f]

EQ 483 (George Bishop to Margaret Fell, 1656): For thou mayst understand, that on the 6th day of the last week, between the 2nd and 3rd hour in the afternoon, J[ames] N[ayler] and his company ... came into this town with full purpose and resolution to set up their image, and to break the truth in pieces, and to bruise and tread down and beguile and devour the tender plants of the Lord in this his Vineyard, ... with which being overfilled and made drunk with the indignation of the Lord. They brought in J.N. on horseback, who rode with his hands before him. One reign of his bridle Mar[tha] Simmonds led, and Han[nah] Stranger the other. And some went on his sides and Hannah’s husband went bare before him, and Dorcas Erbury with a man of the Isle of Ely rode after, and thus they led him, and thus they rode and through the town, the women singing as they went, "Holy, holy, holy: Hosannah." [Mat 21:6-9 ||]

(Luk 19:38)

GF7:262 (1664): And people shall come to worship God, that made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is therein [Psa 146:6], and the beast's worship, and dragon's worship, and the great whore's church is falling, (the true woman is coming up,) false prophets are falling, true prophets and true witnesses are rising and risen [Rev passim]. Sing, triumph, and rejoice; glory in the highest [Luke 9:38]! trample, tread, and bow them before the mighty God: let the wicked bow before the gates of the righteous [Prov 14:19].

(Luk 19:39f)

IP1:205 (1659): They excepted against him, that he did not rebuke his disciples, and the multitude (spreading their garments, cutting down branches from the trees, and strewing them in the way), with the children that cried Hosanna to him, as he rode on the asses’s colt to Jerusalem [Mat 21:6-9 | Mar 21:4-9 | Luk 19:32-37]; but he rather justified them [Luk 19:39f, Mat 21:15f]. What a ridiculous and vain-glorious piece of pagentry would this seem to the fleshly-wise eye?

Happy art thou, if thou now fall by that hand, which now strikes at many in great lovingkindness and mercy, that he might raise them up again, and fix them firm on a true foundation; but miserable whose eyes are withheld till the day of their visitation be overslipt [Luk 19:41-44], and so they continue keeping their corrupt standing, and confidence in their fleshly knowledge of the Scriptures: for they also must fall; but their fall will be otherwise.

DFR 9f (17–): ...the adversary of all good tempted me to believe that it was too late to think of obtaining peace with my Maker; for this plain reason, "that as there was a day or time, in whihc men might be saved; so, if they let that opportunity pass away unimproved, it would be in vain to attempt it afterward." He suggested that I had had such a day of visitation, and had passed by it [Luk 19:41-44].... [more under Heb 6:4-6]

Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying, in David, Today, after so long a time, as it is said; Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, Heb 4:7 [Psa 95:7f]. Mat 21:18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city [T: +again], he hungered [G: was hungry] .

Mat 21:19 And when he saw [G: seeing; T: spied] a fig tree in the way, he [T: and] came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no [GBT: Never] fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever [GBT: omit]. Mat 21:20 And when the [GBT: his] disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away! [G: omits; BT: away?]

Mat 21:21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye [T: +shall] have faith, and doubt not [T: shall not doubt], ye shall not only do this which is [GT: that which I have] done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall [G: omits] say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast [GT: Take thyself away and cast thyself] into the sea; it shall be done.      qtext

Mat 21:22 And all things, [GT: omit] whatsoever ye shall [B: omits] ask in prayer, believing [GT: if ye believe], ye shall receive [GT: +it; B: +them].

Mat 21:24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing [G: a certain thing; B: one question; T: a certain question], which if ye tell [T: assoil] me, I in [G: omits] like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.

Mat 21:25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with [GT: among] themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?

Mat 21:26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people [G: multitude]; for all [BT: +men] hold [T: held] John as a prophet.

Mat 21:27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

Mat 21:28 But what think ye [T: say ye to this]? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first [GT: elder], and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

Mat 21:29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.

Mat 21:30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go [GBT: will], sir: and [G: yet he; T: yet] went not.      qtext

Mar 11:14 And Jesus answered and said unto it [B: the fig tree], No [GBT: Never] man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever [GBT: while the world standeth]. And his disciples heard it.

Mar 11:20 And in the morning, as they passed by [G: journeyed together], they saw the fig tree dried up from [BT: by] the roots.

Mar 11:32 But if we shall [G omits] say, Of men; they feared [GB: we fear; T: then fear we] the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed [BT: very prophet].

Mar 11:33 And [G: Then] they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith [GBT: answered and said] unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Luk 20:1 And it came to pass, that on [T: that fortuned in] one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief [GBT: high] priests and the scribes came upon him [T omits] with the elders,      qtext

Luk 20:2 And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou [GT: thou doest] these things? or [BT: Either] who is he that gave [G: hath given] thee this authority?

Luk 20:4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

Luk 20:5 And they reasoned [T: thought] with [GBT: within] themselves, saying, If we shall [B omits] say, From heaven; he will say, Why then believed ye him not?

Luk 20:6 But and [G omits] if we [GT: +shall] say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was [BT: is] a prophet.

GF3:14f (Edward Burrough, 1659): For when we looked abroad and beheld the world, behold it was altogether darkness, and even as a wilderness [Isa 14:17], and desolate, and barren of good fruit; and death reigned over men [Rom 5:14], and no good fruit was brought forth to God, but leaves we beheld upon every soul [Mar 11:13f].

GF7:88 (1654): And take heed of reasoning with flesh and blood [Gal 1:16], for there disobedience, pride, and presumption will arise; and there ye will grow up to be trees that bear no fruit [Jude 1:12], and as a fig tree which beareth leaves and no fruit [Mark 11:13f], and as wells without water [2 Pet 2:17].

JN2:219 (1655): Whose is this righteousness? It is either God’s, or your own self-righteousness.... For this I say, better no righteousness than that which is not God’s, for such is spiritual wickedness in heavenly places [Eph 6:12], and the long prayers of such is abomination, and they receive the greater damnation [Mar 12:40], and of such Christ saith, "publicans and harlots take the kingdom before them [Mat 21:31]."

IP1:82 (1658): [the fleshly] wisdom is cursed; it is of the earth, and fixed in the earth, and is the grand enemy to the wisdom that is above [Jas 3:15,17]: and where that wisdom stands, there is no entrance for any other. This made it so hard for this sort of persons, in all ages, to own truth. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge hath perverted thee. This made the whorish spirit so able to use sorceries and enchantments from the life in all ages [Isa 47:9f]. And it is easier for publicans, harlots, drunkards, swearers, and all sorts of sinners to own truth, and enter into life, then these [Mat 21:31].

Luk 20:9 Then began he to speak [BT: put forth] to the people this parable [T: similitude]; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen [T: farmers], and went [BT: +himself] into a far [GBT: strange] country for a long time [G: great time; BT: great season].      qtext

Luk 20:10 And at the season [G: at the time convenient; BT: when the time was come] he sent a servant to the husbandmen [T: his tenants], that they should give him of the fruit [T: fruits] of the vineyard: but the husbandmen [G: +did; B: And they; T: And the tenants did] beat him, and sent him away empty.      qtext

Luk 20:11 And again he sent [GBT: +yet] another servant: and they beat him also [GT: they did beat him; B: him they did beat], and entreated him shamefully [GT: foul entreated him (T +also)], and sent him away empty.

Luk 20:12 And again [GT: Moreover; B: Again] he sent a third [GBT: the third; B +also; T +to]: and they wounded him also [GBT: him they wounded], and cast him [GT omit] out.

Luk 20:13 Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved [BT: dear] son: it may be they will reverence him [G: do reverence; T: reverence] when they see him.

Luk 20:14 But when the husbandmen [T: farmers] saw him, they reasoned among [GB: reasoned with (B: within); T: thought in] themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

Luk 20:15 So [BT: And] they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore [GB: What; T: Now what]shall the lord of the vineyard [GB: +therefore] do unto them?      qtext

Luk 20:16 He shall [GT: will (2x)] come and destroy these husbandmen [T: those farmers], and shall give the [GBT: let (G: give) out his] vineyard to others. And [G: But; BT omit] when they heard it [B: this; T: that], they said, God forbid.      qtext

Luk 20:17 And he beheld them, and said, What is [GT: meaneth] this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected [GBT: that the builders refused], the same [G: that] is become [GT: made] the head of the corner [T: corner stone]?      qtext

[cf Psa 118:22f; Acts 4:11; 1 Pet 2:7; Eph 2:20; Mat 21:42 | Mar 12:10]

Luk 20:18 Whosoever shall fall upon [B: doth stumble upon; T: stumble at] that stone shall be broken; but [G: and] on whomsoever [BT: whosoever] it shall fall [B: falleth; T: fall upon], it will grind him to powder.      qtext

Luk 20:19 And [G: then] the chief [GBT: high] priests and the scribes the same hour sought [GBT: went about] to lay hands on him; and [GT: but] they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable [BT: similitude] against them.

(Mat 21:33-41 | Mar 12:1-9 | Luk 20:9-16 )

GF6:473 (16– ): And what! are all you bishops, priests, ministers, and teachers, the keepers of the vineyard in Christendom? Hath it not been let out to you husbandmen, and when the Lord hath sent forth his servants to look for fruits among you, have not you banished, imprisoned, stoned, hanged, killed, and burned many of the Lord’s servants? [Mat 21:33-41 ||] And have you not crucified to yourselves afresh the son of God, the heir of the vineyard, and put him to open shame [Heb 6:6], by your evil lives and conversations?

JN1:174 (1653): But are you in your duty as servants to Christ, when you are prescribing him ways to walk by in his church? And is it not so, when you would limit him [Psa 78:41] to speak only by such as you in your wisdom approve of, or else he shall be silent? and to effect this, are all the powers of the earth combined together [Psa 2:2f]: do you not here take upon you to be lords of the vineyard, and no servants? and would not suffer him to send forth laborers into it, who is Lord of it [margin: Mat 21:28 to the end]

RBA 135 (1678, V/VI.20): [Cites Isaiah’s and of the vineyard, Isa 5:1-7] The same example is used by Christ [Mat 21:33-41 ||], where Jesus shows how to some a vineyard was planted, and all things given necessary for them, to get fruit to pay or restore to their master; and how the master many times waited to be merciful to them, in sending servants after servants, and passing by many offenses, before he determined to destroy and cast them out.... the parable [would not] have answered the end, for which it is alleged, if these men had not been in a capacity to have done good, yea, such was their capacity, that Christ saith in the prophet, "What more could I have done?" [Isa 5:4] So that it is more than manifest, that ... Christ holds forth his long-suffering towards men, and their wickedness, to whom means of salvation being afforded, do nevertheless resist, to their own condemnation.

(Mat 21:35f | Mar 12:2-5 | Luk 20:10-12 )

JN1:148 (1653): Do not this generation beat some, and stone and shamefully entreat others, that bear witness to the Heir [Mat 21:35f |Mar 12:2-5 | Luk 20:10-12]? And hath not Christ said, "Ye shall be hated by all for my name’s sake" [Mat 10:25]?

MFS 92 (1656): RANTERS: What does holiness save, or ungodliness destroy, as you apprehend them to be? ANSWER: Holiness saves that which you, the ungodly, destroy. The Lord God, who is a jealous God, his anger is kindled against you and will destroy you from the face of the earth [Deut 6:5]. He that defiles the temple of God, him will God destroy [1 Cor 3:17], and miserably will he destroy the wicked men [Mat 20:41].

(Mat 21:42-44 | Mar 12:10f | Luk 20:17f)

GFT 88 (1674): Now all Christians say they are believers. If believers, they would be in rest, ceasing gathering sticks to make them fires and gathering their own meat on the Sabbath day [Num 15:32-36, Exo 16:26]. They that believe are entered into their rest [Heb 4:3]. All that are faithful believers are entered into their rest and Sabbath. Christ, the top and corner stone, will fall on the heads [Mat 21:42-44 | Luk 20:17f] of stick gatherers, rakers, kindlers of fire to warm themselves [Isa 50:11] in their winter-cold professions and night-garments.

(Mat 21:44 | Luk 20:18)

GF3:253 (1659): You say, "Visions are ceased, and revelations, and immediate inspirations." But I say, "Repent, every one of you, and come to the light," for the burdensome stone [Zech 12:3] is fallen upon you, and all that stand against the light "that doth enlighten every man that cometh into the world [John 1:9]," shall split yourselves against the rock, and be ground to powder [Mat 21:44 | Luk 20:18].

JN1:285 (1654): repent and turn in your eye to that in your conscience which is the light of Christ, to let you see what you are doing and whom you stand for, that so you may be led no longer by that spirit of opposition, but may cast down your crowns at the feet of the Lamb [Rev 4:10], who is now arisen to take the kingdom, lest he take you away with his grievous stroke [Job 36:18]; for if he fall upon you, he will grind you to powder [Mat 21:44].

WTG 341 (Ann Moore, 1760): And notwithstanding he was so tender, there was something in that place that seemed hard and would not fall upon the rock that it might be broken upon which I fear the rocks will fall and grind to powder [Mat 21:44].

Mat 22:1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables [T: in similitudes], and said $[GT: saying],      qtext

Mat 22:2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain [B: man that was a] king, which made a marriage for [GT: married] his son,

Mat 22:3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.

Mat 22:4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.      qtext

Mat 22:5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to [GT: about] his merchandise:

Mat 22:6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully [G: sharply; T: ungodly], and slew them.

Mat 22:7 But when the king heard thereof [G: it; T: that], he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies [GT: warriors; B: men of war], and destroyed those murderers, and burned [BT: brent] up their city.

Mat 22:8 Then saith [GBT: said] he to his servants, [G: +Truly] The wedding [B: marriage indeed] is ready [GBT: prepared], but they which were bidden were not worthy.

Mat 22:9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall [GBT: omit] find, bid to the marriage.

Mat 22:10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as [G: that ever] they found [BT: could find], both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

Mat 22:11 And when the king came in to see [T: visit]the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:

Mat 22:12 And he saith [GBT: said] unto him, Friend, how camest thou [T: fortuned it that thou camest] in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was [BT: +even] speechless.      qtext

Mat 22:13 Then said the king to the servants [BT: ministers], [T: +Take and] Bind him hand and foot, and take him away [BT: omit], and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

But if the magistrate would have all, both God's due, and Caesar's too, that we cannot give; for God must have his worship, his praise, his honour, and his due; and Caesar must have his due, his earthly custom and tribute; and so herein, we render unto God the things which are God's, and unto Caesar the things which are his [Mat 22:21].

§130 E-K (Mat 22:23-33 | Mar 12:18-27 | Luk 20:27-40)

Mat 22:23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,

Mat 22:24 Saying, Master, Moses said [T: bade], If a man die, having no children, his brother shall [T: that the brother] marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

Mat 22:25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife [GT: married a wife and; T: married and], deceased, and, having no issue, [BT: without issue and] left his wife unto his brother:

Mat 22:26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

Mat 22:27 And last of all the woman died also.

Mat 22:28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

Mat 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err [GT: are deceived], not knowing [T: and understand not] the scriptures, nor [T: +yet] the power of God.      qtext

Mat 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry [G: +wives] , nor are given in marriage [G: wives are bestowed in marriage; T: are married], but are as the angels of God in heaven.      qtext

Mat 22:31 But as touching [G: And concerning] the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken [GT: what is spoken (T: said)] unto you by [GBT: of] God, saying [BT: which saith],

Mat 22:32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac [T: Abraham’s God and Isaac’s God], and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.      qtext

Mat 22:33 And when the multitude [B: multitudes; T: people] heard this [G: it; T: that], they were astonished [GBT: astonied] at his doctrine.

Mar 12:18 Then come unto him [GT: Then came; B: There came also unto him] the Sadducees [GT: +unto him], which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

Mar 12:19 Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him [G omits], and leave no children, that [T: +then] his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

Mar 12:20 Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying [GBT: when he died] left no seed [G: issue; BT: +behind him].

Mar 12:21 And [G: Then] the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed [G: did he yet leave issue; BT: left any seed]: and the third likewise.

Mar 12:22 And the [G: So those; BT: And] seven had her, and left no seed [G: issue; BT: +behind him]: last of all the woman [GB T: wife] died also.

Mar 12:23 In the resurrection therefore [GT: then], when they shall rise [GBT: +again], whose wife shall she be of them? for the [GBT omit] seven had her to wife.

Mar 12:24 And Jesus answering [GBT: answered and] said unto them, Do ye not therefore err [GT: Are ye not therefore deceived], because ye know [BT: because ye (T: and) understand] not the scriptures, neither the power of God?      qtext

Mar 12:25 For when they shall rise [GBT: +again] from the dead [T: death], they neither [G: neither men] marry, nor are given in marriage [GT: wives (T omits) are married]; but are as the angels which are in heaven.      qtext

Mar 12:26 And as touching the dead, that they rise [GBT: shall (B omits) rise again]: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?      qtext

Mar 12:27 He [G: God] is not the God of the dead, but the [B omits] God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err [GT: are therefore greatly deceived].

Luk 20:27 Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

Luk 20:28 Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children [T: issue], that [BT: +then] his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

Luk 20:29 [G: +now] There were therefore [GT omit] seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and [G: +he] died without children.

Luk 20:30 And the second took her to wife [GT: the wife; B: her], and he died childless.

Luk 20:31 And [G: Then] the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they [G: so likewise the seven died, and; B: in like wise the residue of the seven, and] left no children [BT: +behind them], and died [G omits].

Luk 20:32 [G: +And] Last of all the woman died also.

Luk 20:33 Therefore in [G: Therefore at; B: Now in; T: Now at] the resurrection whose wife of them is she [GBT: shall she be]? for seven had her to wife.

Luk 20:34 And Jesus answering [GBT: answered and] said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage [GBT: marry wives, and are married]:

Luk 20:35 But they which shall be accounted [GB: counted; T: made] worthy to obtain [GBT: enjoy] that world, and the resurrection from the dead [T: death], neither marry, nor are given in marriage [GBT: neither (BT: do not) marry wives, neither are married] :      qtext

Luk 20:36 Neither can they die any more [G: For they can die no more; BT: Nor yet can die any more]: for [G: forasmuch as] they are equal unto the angels; and are the children [GBT: sons] of God, being [GBT: since (BT: inasmuch as) they are] the children of the resurrection.

Luk 20:37 Now that the dead are raised [GBT: And that the dead shall rise again], even Moses [B: Moses also] shewed at [GBT: shewed it (B: sheweth; T: signified) besides] the bush, when he calleth [GT: said] the Lord [G: +is] the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.      qtext

Luk 20:38 For he is not a [GT: the] God of the [B omits] dead, but of the living [GT: them which live; B: living]: for all live unto [T: in] him.

Luk 20:39 Then certain of the scribes [BT: Pharisees] answering [GBT: answered and] said, Master, thou hast well said.

Luk 20:40 And after that they durst not ask him any question [G: thing] at all.

GF8:8 (1669): You neither know the scriptures nor the power of God [Mat 22:29]. How should they know the scriptures or the power of God either, whose darkness does not comprehend the light [John 1:5]?

IP3:284 (1674): The Holy Spirit of God, and the holy Scriptures, are not always joined together; for some in the dark corners of the earth may be visited by the Spirit, become sensible of the Spirit, and receive the Spirit, who never heard of the Scriptures; and many may have the Scriptures, and yet be very ignorant of, and strangers to, God’s Holy Spirit; as the Jews were, who had them read in their synagogues every sabbath day, and yet Christ told them, "Ye neither know the Scriptures, nor the power of God." (Mat 22:30 | Mar 12:25 | Luk 20:35f )

MFU 191 (1656): the children of this world marry and are given in marriage [Mat 22:30], & ever did before the flood [Gen 6:2], there they were found, & before the coming of the Son of Man there they are found: but the children of Light [John 12:36] is not of this world [John 15:19], for the Light is the condemnation of the world, and bears witness against the world that the deeds thereof are evil [John 3:19]. And this redeems from under the world’s ways and customs.... Our marriages ... is in the Light, whom the Lord joins together no man can put asunder [Mat 19:6]....

§130L-Q, 131 (Mat 22:34-46 | Mar 12:28-37 | §83A Luk 10:25-28, 20:41-44)

Mat 22:34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered [G: assembled; B: came; T: drew] together.

Mat 22:35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer [G: an expounder of the law; T: a doctor of law], asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

Mat 22:36 Master, which is the great [T: chief] commandment in the law?

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt [T: omits] love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.      qtext

[Mat 22:37 cf Deut 6:5]

Mat 22:38 This is the first and great [T: the chief] commandment.

Mat 22:39 And the second is like unto it [BT: this], Thou shalt [T: omits] love thy neighbour as thyself.

[Mat 22:39 cf Lev 19:18]

Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the [G: hangeth the whole] law and the prophets.

Mat 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,

Mat 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say [GBT: said] unto him, The Son of David [G: David’s] .

Mat 22:43 He saith [GBT: said] unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,      qtext

Mat 22:44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on [G: at] my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?

[Mat 22:44 cf Psa 110:1]

Mat 22:45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

Mat 22:46 And no man was able to [GT: none could] answer him a [T: again one] word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Mar 12:28 And [G: Then came; B: And when there came: T: And there came] one of the scribes came, and having [GT: that had; B: and had] heard them reasoning [GBT: disputing] together, and perceiving [BT perceived] that he had answered them well, [GB: +he; T: +and] asked him, Which is the first commandment of all [BT: of all the commandments]?

Mar 12:29 And [GBT omit] Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O $[GT omit] Israel; The Lord our God is one [G: the only] Lord:

[Mar 12:29 cf Deut 6:4]

Mar 12:30 And thou shalt [G: Thou shalt therefore] love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.      qtext

[Mar 12:30 cf Deut 6:5]

Mar 12:31 And the second is like, namely this [G: that is; BT: unto this], Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

[Mar 12:31 cf Lev 19:18]

Mar 12:32 And the [G: Then that] scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other [GBT omit] but he:

Mar 12:33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding [T: mind], and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his [BT: a man's] neighbour as himself, is more [B: greater; T: a greater thing] than all whole [B: the; T omits] burnt offerings and sacrifices.      qtext

Mar 12:34 And [G: Then] when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

Mar 12:35 And Jesus answered and said, while he taught [GBT: teaching] in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?

Mar 12:36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost [BT: inspired by the Holy Ghost, said], The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on [G: at; BT: on] my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.      qtext

Mar 12:37 David therefore [GT: Then David; B: David] himself calleth him Lord; and whence [GT: and (G omits) by what means; B: and how] is he then his son? And the common [GBT: much] people heard him gladly.

Luk 20:41 And he said [GT: Then said he] unto them, How say they that Christ is David's son?

Luk 20:42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on [G: at; T: on] my right hand,

Luk 20:43 Till I [G: +shall] make thine enemies thy footstool.

Luk 20:44 David therefore [GT: Seeing David] calleth [G: called] him Lord, how is he then his son?

JN1:181 (1653): You talk of the Scripture being a golden rule, but your ways prove how little you are ruled by it.... Do ye love God above all, and your neighbours as yourself [Mat 22:37-39 | Mar 12:30f | Luk 10:27], when you make them your footstool [Psa 110:1]?

IP3:391 (1677): Oh that this nation might become a paradise of God [Rev 2:7]! Oh that everyone might be sensible of his presence and power and kingdom and righteous government inwardly in the heart, from the king that sits on the throne, to the beggar on the dunghill [1 Sam 2:8]! Surely man was not made for himself! Surely he was not made such a creature as now he is! but in the holy image of God [Gen 1:27], with love in his heart to God above all, and to his neighbor as himself [Mat 22:37-39 | Mar 12:30f | Luk 10:27 ].

JWJM 177 (1772): when we love God with all our heart and all our strength, then in this love we love our neighbours as ourselves [Mat 12:37-39 | Mar 12:30f], and a tenderness of heart is felt toward all people, even such who as to outward circumstances may be to us as the Jews were to the Samaritans.

GF7:129 (1656): All Friends and brethren every where, walk in the truth, and know one another in the measure of life, that in it your minds may be guided up to the Father of life; and stand in his counsel, that he alone may be loved with all your strength, with all your minds, and with all your souls [Mark 12:30]; so that ye may all know one another in the life and light, that ye may all be kept from idols [1 Jn 5:21]. For if ye know one another in the flesh only, that love which will rise out of that knowledge is feigned, and that will wither, and under the condemnation of the light must come.

JWJM [199,] 259 (17–): ...it is evident that all business which hath not its foundation in true wisdom is unbecoming a faithful follower of Christ, who loves God not only with all his heart, but with all his strength and ability to labour and act in the world [Mat 12:37 | Mar 12:30]....
