Luk 18:1 And he spake [G: spake also; BT: put forth] a parable [T: similitude] unto them to this end [T: signifying] , that men [G: they] ought always to pray, and not to faint [G: wax faint; BT: be weary] ;      qtext

Luk 18:3 And there was a [BT: +certain] widow in that city; and she [GT: which] came unto him, saying, Avenge me of [G: Do me justice against] mine adversary.

Luk 18:4 And he would not for a while [G: of a long time]: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard [G: reverence; BT: care for] man;

Luk 18:5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her [G: do her right], lest by her continual coming she weary me [GBT: at the last she come (B: she come at the last) and make me weary (T: hag on me)].

(Luk18:1)

RBA 330 (1678, XI.21): Inward prayer is the secret turning of the mind toward God whereby, being secretly touched and awakened by the Light of Christ in the conscience, and sow bowed down under the sense of its iniquities, unworthiness, and misery, it looks up to God, and joining issue with the secret shinings of the Seed of God it breathes toward him and is constantly breathing forth some secret desires and aspirations towards him. It is in this sense that we are so frequently commanded in scripture to "pray continually" (Luk 18:1; 1 Th 5:17; Eph 6:18; Luk 21:36), which cannot be understood of outward prayer, because it were impossible that men should be always upon their knees, expressing words of prayer; and this would hinder them from the exercise of those duties, no less positively commanded.

(Luk18:7f)

IP4:300 (1675?): There is also a spiritual taste to savor and distinguish between that which is living, and which is dead; between that which is corrupt and unwholesome, and that which is wholesome food; and by the exercise of these senses, the children of God become more and more skillful in discerning between good and evil. Heb 5:14. And in this living sense, the elect cry unto God against their enemies, and are heard and preserved by him, and shall, in due time, be fully delivered. Luk 18:7f.

(Luk18:8)

IP2:92 (1660). Query 3. When the Son of Man comes to take the government to himself, to give forth the law out of Zion, and the word of the Lord out of Jerusalem, Isa 2:3, whether he shall find faith on the earth? [Luk 18:8] Whether he shall find the kings and powers of the earth ready to receive him, and the professors willing to submit themselves unto him? Or whether they shall generally combine against him, and he be fain to overcome them, before he can reign over them? Rev 17:12-14, Psa 2:2f.

§114 (Luk 18:9-14)

Luk 18:9 And he spake [G: He spake also;p B: And he told; T: andhe put forth] this parable [T: similitude] unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous [G: just; BT: perfect], and despised others [GBT: other]:

Luk 18:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.      qtext

Luk 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are [G omits], extortioners, unjust, adulterers [T: advoutrers], or even [BT omit] as this publican.

Luk 18:12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that [G: +ever] I possess.

Luk 18:13 And [G: But] the publican, standing afar off [T: stood afar off and] , would not lift up so much as [BT omit] his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon [GT omit] his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.      qtext

Luk 18:14 I tell you, this man went down [GBT: departed; BT+home] to his house justified rather [more] than the other: for every one [GT: man] that exalteth himself shall be abased [brought low]; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

GF7:141 (1657): And Christ distinguishes in a parable of a Pharisee, (who was a public praying man,) and of a Publican, that stood afar off, and cried for mercy; who being in the fear, was more justified than the Pharisee, who was in the public praying. [Luke 18:10-14] So, pray in the spirit [Eph 6:18] and in the faith, nothing wavering [James 1:6] nor doubting [1 Tim 2:8].

SIW 99 (Sarah Tuke Grubb, 1792): To punish a child because it has offended us without the discovery of an evil design, is to act under an unchristian spirit, which revenges injuries. This is a disposition which is apt to receive its gratifications from a flattering, cringing spirit, and from such marks of respect as originate in an impure spring of action; and approve and strengthen the little pharisees under their care; whilst the pure life that is struggling in the hearts of some who resemble the publican, is crushed and disregarded [Luk 18:10-14].

(Luk18:13)

WDS 198 (1663): Oh, come away, come away, out of all your thoughts, desires, doubts, and unbelief, which would turn you aside from the enjoyment of the love of God in Christ Jesus. Let none stand afar off [Luk 18:13] because of your littleness, lameness, blindness, weakness, or infirmities, who cannot live at peace until you be healed by the blood of the Lamb.

Mar 10:9 What therefore God hath joined [GBT: coupled] together, let not man put asunder [GBT: separate].      qtext

Mar 10:10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same [GT: that] matter.

HPS 335 (Rebecca Travers, 1669): when he came ... that said, Good master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? he doth not say come, handle and feel this person; but, saith he, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but God; for Christ knew then and now, none could sell all for him [Mat 19:16-22 ||], but who in Spirit learned him to be God blessed forever [Rom 9:5], and therefore he knoew his going from them was expedient, that the promise of the Father's Spirit of Life might be more fully poured out upon them, in which he promised to be with them to the end of the world [Mat 28:20]....

WPR 111 (1669): If he that had loved God, and his neighbor, and kept the commandents from his youth, was excluded from being a disciple because he sold not all and followed Jesus; with what confidence can you call yourselves Christians, who have neither kept the commandments, nor yet forsaken anything to be so? And if it was a bar betwixt him and the eternal life he sought; that notwithstanding all his other virtues, love to money, and his external possessions could not be parted with; what shall be your end, who cannot deny yourselves many less things, but are daily inventing vanities to your fleshly appetites? .... But such a Christian this young man might have been, who had more to say for himself, than the strictest Pharisee living dare pretend to; yet he went away sorrowful from Jesus [Mat 19:16-22 | Mar 10:17-22 | Luk 18:18-23].

There is none good but one, that is, God." [Mat 19:17 | Mar 10:18 | Luk 18:19] This must hold good forever; for the moment any other independent source of real goodness is admitted, another God is at that moment admitted; or good is admitted, which the one God is not the source and author of.

JWJM 251 (17–) : When our Saviour said to the rich youth, "Go sell that thou hast and give to the poor" [Mat 19:21 | Mar 10:21 | Luk 18:22], though undoubtedly it was his duty to have done so, yet to confine this of selling all as a duty on every true Christian would be to limit the Holy One [Psa 78:41].

(Mat 19:24 | Mar 10:25 | Luk 18:25 )

JWJM 250f (17–) : Here our Lord uses an instructing similitude, for as a camel considered under that character cannot pass through a needle’s eye, so a man who trusteth in riches and holds them for the sake of the power and distinction attending them cannot in that spirit enter the kingdom. [Mat 19:24 | Mar 10:25 | Luk 18:25] Now every part of a camel may be so reduced as to pass through a hole as small as a needle’s eye, yet such is the bulk of the creature, and the hardness of its bones and teeth, that it could not be completed without much labour. So man must case from that spirit which craves riches, and be reduced into another disposition, before he inherits the kingdom, as effectually as a camel must cease from the form of a camel in passing through the eye of a needle.

But he that is in that state hath witnessed the holy calling [2 Tim 1:9], and faithfulness to him that called, and the election, and is one of the chosen, or elect of God; and Christ saith, such are beyond fallibility; for speaking of false Christs, he saith, "If it were possible, they should deceive the very elect," Mat 24:24, plainly signifying that it is impossible.

§118 (Mat 20:1-16)

Mat 20:1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an [G: a certain; T: an] householder, which went out early in the morning [G: at the dawning of the day] to hire labourers into his vineyard.      qtext

Mat 20:2 And when he had [GBT: he] agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he [GBT: and] sent them into his vineyard.

Mat 20:3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,      qtext

Mat 20:4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.

Mat 20:5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.

Mat 20:6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith [GBT: said] unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?      qtext

Mat 20:7 They say [GT: said] unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith [GT: said] unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.

Mat 20:8 So when even was come, the lord [G: master] of the vineyard saith [GT: said] unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.

Mat 20:9 And when they came that [GT: they which] were hired about the eleventh hour, they [GT: came and] received every man a penny.

Mat 20:10 But when the first came, they supposed [T: Then came the first supposing] that they should have received [GT: receive] more; and they likewise received every man a penny.

Mat 20:11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman [G: master] of the house,

Mat 20:12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.      qtext

Mat 20:13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?

Mat 20:14 Take that thine is [G: which is thine own; T: which is thy duty], and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto [GT: as much as to] thee.

Mat 20:15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will [T: as me listeth] with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?      qtext

Mat 20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first [BT: +shall be] last: for many be [GT: are] called, but few [BT: +be] chosen.      qtext

(Mat 20:1-14)

GF3:219 (1659): P. He saith, "I had rather be a hireling, such as Christh hath hired in his vineyard, and receive a penny [Mat 20:1-14], than some of the Quakers that go naked in the markets." A. Are you contented every one with your penny from Christ? Are not you all fighting, and striking, and smiting, and casting into prison for means, for tithes, which ye do no work for? Is not Christ come, and hath found you smiting and striking your fellow servants, eating and drinking, like Sodom [Mat 24:49/Ezek 16:49]; and living in pleasure [Jas 5:5], like the old world [2 Pet 2:5]; some having two hundred, some three hundred pounds, some less, some more? Is this equal? Is this to each a penny? Are ye like Christ’s vineyard dressers, his husbandmen in the vineyard? Blush, and be ashamed!

MFU 128 (1655): ...be faithful to your own masters ... that as good stewards you may give a good account, and be found [faithful workers] in the Lord’s vineyard who is now at work, and will have none to be [idle, but calls] into the vineyard at every hour [Mat 20:1-14]: and ye that was called at the first hour of the day, if ye be not faithful & obedient to improve your talents [Mat 25:14-30], he that cometh at the eleventh hour will receive as much as you, and then he that hath been negligent will murmur & counts it hard.

TEM 37 (171-?) And though some who have been called to the Lord’s vineyard at later hours, and since the heat of that day hath been much over [Mat 20:1-14], may be apt to account this testimony [against hat-honour] a small thing to suffer so much upon, as some have done, not only to beating, but to fines and long and hard imprisonments; yet they who, in those times, were faithfully exercised in and under it, durst not despise the day of small things [Zech 4:10], as knowing that he who should do so would not be thought worthy to be concerned in higher testimonies.

HPS 509 (Katharine Whitton, 1681): And as Deborah said, my heart is toward the governors of Israel [Judg 5:9]; and I can truly say, many a time when I have viewed in my mind their sufferings, trials and tribulations they went through in the beginning, my heart hath been broken, and I have secretly said, They have broken us a way through the thickets, and trodden us a path through the deserts; they have borne the burden in the heat of the day [Mat 20:12], and what can I now do, or suffer for the Truth? am I not as one born out of due time [1 Cor 15:8]? But living praises to the Lord, who in every age is ready to reward the faithful, in what hour soever they labour in his vineyard [Mat 20:1-14]....(Continued under John 15:8)

(Mat 20:1-9)

GF7:24f (1652): And meeting and waiting in his power, which ye have received, in it all to improve your measure that God hath given you; [Mat 25:14-30] or ye never improve your measure, so long as ye rely upon any visible thing without you; but when ye come alone to wait upon God, ye shall every one have a reward according to your deserts, and every one your penny, who are called into the vineyard to labour [Mat 20:1-10]. Therefore be faithful to God, and mind that which is committed to you, as faithful servants [Mat 25:14-30], labouring in love [1 Th 1:3]; some threshing, and some ploughing [1 Cor 9:10], and some to keep the sheep.

GF7: 283 (1666; GF8:45, 1673, is virtually identical): Concerning the women's meetings; encourage all the women of families, that are convinced, and mind virtue, and love truth, and walk in it; that they maycome up into God's service, that they may be serviceable in their generation, and in the creation, and come into the practice of the pure religion, which you have received from God, from above; that every one may come to know their duty in it, and their service in the power and wisdom of God [1 Cor 1:24]. For now the practical part is called for. For people must not be always talking and hearing, but they must come into obedience to the great God of heaven and earth. And so that none may stand idle out of the vineyard [Mat 20:3,6], and out of the service, and out of their duty; for such will talk and tattle [1 Tim 5:13], and judge with evil thoughts, of what they in the vineyard say and do.

MFU 90f (1654): Now that every particular member of the body may be sensible of the hardship and sufferings of others and be willing and serviceable in their places, in what the Lord requires, and to remember those that are in bonds, as bound with them, ... and that you may bear one another’s burdens [Gal 6:2] and be equally yoked in the sufferings; our Friends in Westmoreland hath borne the heat of the day [Mat 20:12], and many have been sent forth into the Lord’s service from thence, and that hath caused the burden to lie heavy upon the rest of the Friends thereabout.

(Mat 20:15)

IP4:96 (1671): Now, his love, his mercy, his power, his good Spirit [Neh 9:20], are his own; and he may show forth the operations of them towards men according to his pleasure; and who may say to him, What dost thou? EQ 518 (Robert Barclay, 1676): But all that was caught in the net did not prove good and wholesome fish; some were again to be cast into that ocean from whence they were drawn; of those many that were called, all proved not chosen vessels, fitted for the master’s use [Mat 20:16/ Acts 9:15/2 Tim 2:21].... GF8:181 (1679): Now, if the world do persecute you, and take away your goods or clothes, was not your Lord and master so served? Did not they cast lots for his garments [Mat 27:35]? Was not he haled from the priests to Herod, and before Pontius Pilate, and spit upon [Mat 26:67]? And if they hate thee, and spit upon thee, he was hated and spit upon for thee. Did he not go to prison for thee? And was he not mocked and scourged for thee [Mat 20:19]? Did not he bow to the cross and grave for thee, he who had no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth [1 Pet 2:22]?

WPR 266 (1682): The great work and business of the Cross is SELF-DENIAL.... The Son of God is gone before us, and by the bitter cup he drank, and baptism he suffered [Mat 20:22f | Mar 10:38f], has left us an example, that we should follow [in] his steps. What was his cup he drank and baptism he suffered? I answer, They were the denial and offering up of himself by the eternal Spirit to the will of God undergoing the tribulations of his life, and agonies of his death upon the cross for man’s salvation. What is our cup and cross that we should drink and suffer? They are the denial and offering up of ourselves by the same spirit to do or suffer the will of God for his service and glory; which is the true life and obedience of the Cross of Jesus; narrow still, but before, an unbeaten way.

WTG 210 (Elizabeth Hudson, 1750): to go through the bitter baptism of the cross [Mat 20:22f | Mar 10:38f]

JWJM 49 [YM Epistle, 1755]: And if for the further promoting his most gracious purposes in the earth, he should give us to taste of that bitter cup which his faithful ones have often partook of –oh, that we may be rightly prepared to receive it! [Mat 20:22f | Mar 10:38f]

Mat 20:25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye [G: We] know that the princes [G: lords] of the Gentiles exercise [GT: have] dominion [GT: have domination] over them, and they that are great exercise authority [T: power] upon [GT:over] them.      qtext

Mar 10:42 But Jesus [B: +when he had] called them to him, and saith [GT: and said; B: said] unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over [G: are princes among; BT: seem to bear rule among] the Gentiles exercise lordship [GB: exercise authority; T: reign as lords] over [B: upon] them; and their great ones [GBT: they that be great among them] exercise authority upon $[GT: over] them.      qtext

Luk 22:26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is [G: let the] greatest among you, let him [G omits; BT: shall] be as the younger [G: chief; T: youngest]; and he that is chief [G: the chiefest], as he that doth serve [G: as he that serveth; BT: shall be as he that doth (T: the) minister].      qtext

Pennington treats of this text at length in IP1:377-81 ("The Authority and Government which Christ Excluded out of his Church", 1660 [excerpt under Heb 1:8]). IP4: 304-11 (167-?) rebuts John Pennyman’s critique of the earlier paper.

GF8:96f (1676): And some there have been, that would not have the women to meet without the men; and some of them say, the women must not speak in the church [1 Cor 14:34f], and if they must not speak, what should they meet with them for? But what spirit is this, that would exercise lordship [Mark 10:42 | Luke 22:25] over the faith of any? And what a spirit is this, that will neither suffer the women to speak amonst the men, nor to meet amongst themselves to speak?

MFU 376 (1664): And so here is glorious and precious liberty [Rom 8:21], you that come hither to be ordered and governed, under the power and dominion of Christ, and to be translated into the kingdom [Col 1:13] of the Lord Jesus Christ, from under the power and dominion of Antichrist: this is precious indeed. And what if this be obtained through some sufferings, and hardships, and trials? How should it be otherwise? Since the Gentiles exercise Lordship [Mark 10:42 | Luke 22:25] one over another, how should Babylon part with her children quietly?

GF4:361 (1668) : and Christ said, "Christians should not exercise lordship over one another as the Gentiles had done [Mat 20:25f | Mar 10:42f | Luk 20:25f]; and the apostle says, "be not many masters [Jas 3:1], for you have one master, even Christ [Mat 23:8,10], and they were not lords over God's heritage [1 Pet 5:3], but they were helpers of their joy [2 Cor 1:24], and they should not lord it over their brethren, for they were all brethren [Mat 23:8]"....

JN1: 266 (1654): take heed of that which would be exalted above others, teaching and talking of things without life; and you that would be counted somebody, let such first learn to wash the feet of them they would be above [John 13:4-17], and he that would be greatest let him be servant to all [Mat 20:27 ||]; for it is the humble and not the high spirits that are taught of God....

GF7:114 (1656): Therefore in the light wait, where the unity is, where the peace is, where the oneness with the Father and the son is, where there is no rent nor division; but all one in Christ Jesus [Gal 3:28], the everlasting fountain of life [Psa 37:9] and covenant of peace [Ezek 37:26]. The son of man cometh not to be ministered unto, but to minister [Mat 20:28]. Where the life and fulness dwells it hides and covers from that to which the curse is; that so it may minister forth to the seed's seed.
