10:1 Woe unto them that decree unrighteous [G: wicked] decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed [G: write grievous things];

10:2 To turn aside the needy [G: keep back the poor] from judgment, and to take away the right from [G: judgement of] the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob [G: spoil] the fatherless! qtext

10:3 And what will ye do [G: +now] in the day of visitation, and in the desolation [G: of destruction] which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory? qtext

10:4 Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners [G: every one shall fall among them that are bound], and they shall fall under [G: down among] the slain. [G: +Yet] For all this his anger [G: wrath] is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

10:5 O Assyrian [G: O Asshur], the rod of mine anger [G my wrath], and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.

10:6 I will send him against an hypocritical [G: to a dissembling] nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down [G: under feet] like the mire of the streets [G: in the street]. qtext

10:7 Howbeit he meaneth [G: But he thinketh] not so, neither doth his heart think [G: esteem it] so; but it is in his heart [G: he imagineth] to destroy and cut off nations not a few [G: not a few nations].

10:8 For he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?

10:9 Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

10:10 [G: +Like] As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of [G: seeing their idols were above] Jerusalem and of [G: above] Samaria; qtext

10:11 Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols [G: the idols thereof (2x)], so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

10:12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, that [G: But] when the Lord hath performed his whole [G: accomplished all his] work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish [G: visit] the fruit of the stout [G: proud] heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high [G: his glorious and proud] looks.

10:15 Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify [G: exalt] itself against him that shaketh [G: moveth] it? as if the rod should shake [G: lift up] itself against them that lift [G: him that taketh] it up, or as if the staff should lift up [G: exalt] itself, as if it were no wood. qtext

10:16 Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord [G: Lord God] of hosts, send among his fat ones [G: men] leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

10:17 And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day; qtext

10:18 And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field [G: fields], both soul and body: and they [G: flesh: and he] shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth [G: the fainting of a standardbearer].

10:19 And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write [G: tell] them.

10:20 And it shall come to pass in that day, that [G: at that day shall] the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay [G: stay no more] upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

10:21 The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

10:22 For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

10:23 For the Lord GOD of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.

WTG 238 (Elizabeth Hudson, 1750): [continued from Rom 9:20)] shall the axe boast against him that heweth therewith, or the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh with it, and so also of the rod and the staff [Isa 10:15].... as the work of such, spiritually understood is supernatural, so indeed is the government and application of them to their appointed services by a hand supernatural. They cannot handle or apply themselves, therefore the whole system of the matter calls aloud for submission.

GF3:217 (1659): None know true comfort but who come to immediate revelation, that is, to the spirit that reveals the things of God [1 Cor 2:10]. If men have all the scriptures, the written words, and not the word in which they end, they have not comfort, neither can they do any thing without Christ [John 15:5], neither have the wearied rest, neither is the bishop of the soul known [1 Pet 2:25], neither is the burthen and the old yoke gone off [Isa 10:27], though they have all the scriptures.

SBD 84f (1750): [Quotes Isa 11:6] This is that disposition and subjection of mind that we ought to wait daily to be kept under by the Spirit. If we by nature are like the wolf, leopard, or lion at any time, and that nature appears in us, this by the meek Spirit of Jesus ought to be always kept under subjection and government. For though we may have known our natural tempers subdued in a great degree, at our first setting out in the ministry, by the cross and power of Christ, yet if there be not a daily abiding under that power, our natural inclinations and tempers may prevail again to our hurt, and the blessed effect of that subjection to the Spirit, spoken of by the Prophet, we shall not experience, that is: [Quotes Isa 11:9]

IP2:195 (1661): Stubbornness, or such a kind of stiffness and resolvedness, ariseth from the strength and corruption of the natural will and earthy wisdom. The wisdom which is from above is gentle, easy to be entreated [Jas 3:17]; and the will which is created by God is mild and flexible, and easy to be led by the least child [Isa 11:6], in the line of goodness.

WPR 511 (1693): And as Christ the repairer of breaches, and restorer of paths to dwell in [Isa 58:12], comes to be known in the heart, love will take place of wrath, and forgiveness overcome injury and revenge. So the Lamb will be preferred before the lion, and the lion resign to, and lie down with the Lamb [Isa 11:6], and destruction come to a perpetual end. For which cause, the weapons of this people's warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God, to the pulling down the strong holds of sin and Satan, according to the Apostle's doctrine [2 Cor 10:4]. JWJM 185 (1772): A deviation amongst us as a Society from that simplicity that there is in Christ [2 Cor 11:3] becoming so general, and the trade from this island to Africa for slaves, and other trades carried on through oppressive channels, and abundance of the inhabitatnts being employed in factories to support a trade in which there is unrighteousness, and some growing outwardly great by gain of this sort: the weight of this degeneracy hath lain so heavy upon me, the depth of this revolt been so evident, and desires in my heart have been so ardent for a reformation, so ardent that we might come to that right use of things where, living on a little, we might inhabit that holy mountain on which they neither hurt nor destroy! DGA 70: With the raising of God's ensign (Isa 11:10, 18:3, 30:17, 31:9), the mortal conflict between Christ and Satan for lordship over the individual begins in earnest. The sanctifying process begins as the light, which at first only served to expose sin, now sets out to destroy it. Fox urges new Friends: "In that which convinced you wait, that you may have that removed [which] you are convinced of." (GFJN 228)

GF8:193 (1682, to Friends captive in Algiers): my desire is, that the Lord may preserve you all, that do meet in the name of Jesus [Mat 18:20], that in your lives, and conversations, and words, you may preach righteousness, and holiness, and godliness, and the life of truth; so that you may answer the spirit of God, both in the Turks and Moors, and the rest of the captives; that God's city may be set upon the holy hill there, which cannot be hid [Mat 5:14]; but that all may see it with the light wherewith Christ hath enlightened every man that cometh into the world [John 1:9].
