10:1 Woe unto them that decree unrighteous [G: wicked] decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed [G: write grievous things];

10:2 To turn aside the needy [G: keep back the poor] from judgment, and to take away the right from [G: judgement of] the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob [G: spoil] the fatherless!      qtext

10:3 And what will ye do [G: +now] in the day of visitation, and in the desolation [G: of destruction] which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?      qtext

10:4 Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners [G: every one shall fall among them that are bound], and they shall fall under [G: down among] the slain. [G: +Yet] For all this his anger [G: wrath] is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

10:5 O Assyrian [G: O Asshur], the rod of mine anger [G my wrath], and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.

10:6 I will send him against an hypocritical [G: to a dissembling] nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down [G: under feet] like the mire of the streets [G: in the street].      qtext

10:7 Howbeit he meaneth [G: But he thinketh] not so, neither doth his heart think [G: esteem it] so; but it is in his heart [G: he imagineth] to destroy and cut off nations not a few [G: not a few nations].

10:8 For he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?

10:9 Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

10:10 [G: +Like] As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of [G: seeing their idols were above] Jerusalem and of [G: above] Samaria;      qtext

10:11 Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols [G: the idols thereof (2x)], so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

10:12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, that [G: But] when the Lord hath performed his whole [G: accomplished all his] work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish [G: visit] the fruit of the stout [G: proud] heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high [G: his glorious and proud] looks.

10:13 For he saith, By the strength of my [G: Because he said, By the power of mine own] hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and [G: because I am wise: therefore] I have removed the bounds [G: borders] of the people, and have robbed [G: spoiled] their treasures, and I have put [G: have pulled] down the inhabitants like a valiant man:

10:23 For the Lord GOD of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.

(LXX: He will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because the Lord will make a short work in all the world.)

10:24 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: [G: Asshur] he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt

10:25 For yet a very little while [G: time], and the indignation shall cease [G: wrath shall be consumed], and mine anger in their destruction.

10:26 And the LORD of hosts shall stir [G: raise] up a scourge for him according to the slaughter [G: plague] of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod [G: staff] was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

(Isa 11:6-9)

SBD 84f (1750): [Quotes Isa 11:6] This is that disposition and subjection of mind that we ought to wait daily to be kept under by the Spirit. If we by nature are like the wolf, leopard, or lion at any time, and that nature appears in us, this by the meek Spirit of Jesus ought to be always kept under subjection and government. For though we may have known our natural tempers subdued in a great degree, at our first setting out in the ministry, by the cross and power of Christ, yet if there be not a daily abiding under that power, our natural inclinations and tempers may prevail again to our hurt, and the blessed effect of that subjection to the Spirit, spoken of by the Prophet, we shall not experience, that is: [Quotes Isa 11:9]

(Isa 11:6)

JN2:276 (1655): ...thou art teaching thou knows not what, and would make all believe none know more than thou, that thou mightest at once shut the kingdom against all that will believe thee [Mat 23:13]. And all thou knows of the light of Christ and its growth is but as the old wolf grows more subtle than the young, but knows not the Child that is to lead them [Isa 11:6]

IP2:195 (1661): Stubbornness, or such a kind of stiffness and resolvedness, ariseth from the strength and corruption of the natural will and earthy wisdom. The wisdom which is from above is gentle, easy to be entreated [Jas 3:17]; and the will which is created by God is mild and flexible, and easy to be led by the least child [Isa 11:6], in the line of goodness.

WPR 511 (1693): And as Christ the repairer of breaches, and restorer of paths to dwell in [Isa 58:12], comes to be known in the heart, love will take place of wrath, and forgiveness overcome injury and revenge. So the Lamb will be preferred before the lion, and the lion resign to, and lie down with the Lamb [Isa 11:6], and destruction come to a perpetual end. For which cause, the weapons of this people's warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God, to the pulling down the strong holds of sin and Satan, according to the Apostle's doctrine [2 Cor 10:4]. Which is the holy war indeed, styled by the Holy Ghost, the saint's warfare.

GF4:165 (1658): ...the pearl ... has been lost [Mat 13:46] since the days of apostacy from the apostle's life, Christ's life; nations covered with ignorance like unto waters [Isa 11:9 | Hab 2:14].

JN2:267 (Richard Salle, 1655): thus saith the Lord, if ye my dear children, whom I have convinced by my pure light in your consciences, will hearken to my counsel [Jer 38:15] and will stand in my fear, then shall my secrets be made known unto you, and you shall grow up in the knowledge of me [2 Pet 3:18], as calves of the stall [Mal 4:2], and my knowledge shall cover the whole earth, as the waters cover the sea [Isa 11:9].

IP3:331 (1674): [continued from under Mat 23:37] No device of the enemy shall be able to hurt or destroy on God's holy mountain [Isa 11:9]; for his light shines there to dispel the darkness, and his power is revealed there, to scatter and dash in pieces the strength of the enemy [Exo 15:6] wherever it appears.

JWJM 185 (1772): A deviation amongst us as a Society from that simplicity that there is in Christ [2 Cor 11:3] becoming so general, and the trade from this island to Africa for slaves, and other trades carried on through oppressive channels, and abundance of the inhabitatnts being employed in factories to support a trade in which there is unrighteousness, and some growing outwardly great by gain of this sort: the weight of this degeneracy hath lain so heavy upon me, the depth of this revolt been so evident, and desires in my heart have been so ardent for a reformation, so ardent that we might come to that right use of things where, living on a little, we might inhabit that holy mountain on which they neither hurt nor destroy! [Isa 11:9]

(Isa 11:10)

DGA 70: With the raising of God's ensign (Isa 11:10, 18:3, 30:17, 31:9), the mortal conflict between Christ and Satan for lordship over the individual begins in earnest. The sanctifying process begins as the light, which at first only served to expose sin, now sets out to destroy it. Fox urges new Friends: "In that which convinced you wait, that you may have that removed [which] you are convinced of." (GFJN 228)

GF8:193 (1682, to Friends captive in Algiers): my desire is, that the Lord may preserve you all, that do meet in the name of Jesus [Mat 18:20], that in your lives, and conversations, and words, you may preach righteousness, and holiness, and godliness, and the life of truth; so that you may answer the spirit of God, both in the Turks and Moors, and the rest of the captives; that God's city may be set upon the holy hill there, which cannot be hid [Mat 5:14]; but that all may see it with the light wherewith Christ hath enlightened every man that cometh into the world [John 1:9]. And that Christ's ensign may be set up in those parts [Isa 11:10]; that with his light in all men, they may all see it, and flock to it; and Christ the ensign furnisheth all that come to him, with heavenly armour and spiritual weapons [Eph 6:11]

JN2:603 (1655): And this you shall all find, that as you abide in your measures so you grow herein, and so come to feed on the life, when others, whose minds are abroad, feed on the wind [Hos 12:1]; which if hereto you take heed, no leanness of soul [Psa 106:15] there shall be, nor darkness of mind; but the least shall be as David when Jesse's root [Isa 11:10] you come to feed on.

IP1:93 (1658): we are not persons that have shot up out of the old root into another appearance, as one sect hath done out of another, till many are come up one after another, the ground still remaining the same out of which they all grew; but that ground hath been shaken and shaking, destroyed and destroying, removed and removing in us; and the old root of Jesse [Isa 11:10] hath been made manifest in us, and we have been transplanted by the everlasting power of life, and a real change brought forth in us out of that spirit wherein the world lives and worships, into another Spirit, into which nothing which is of the world can enter.

So that his name is made mention of, and sung of, and exalted over all that can come to oppose or break down the work of his power in the heart; insomuch that the inhabitant of Zion cries out and shouts against the enemy when he appears, because the Holy One of Israel is so great in the midst of her [Isa 12:6], who breaks the spear and the bow, the shield and the battle [Psa 46:9/Psa 76:3].

13:1 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.

13:2 Lift ye up a banner [G: up a standard] upon the high mountain, exalt [G: lift up] the voice unto them, shake [G: wag] the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles.

13:3 I have commanded my sanctified ones [G: them that I have sanctified: and], I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even [G: called the mighty to my wrath, and] them that rejoice in my highness [G: glory] .

13:4 The noise of a multitude [G: +is]in the mountains, like as of[G omits] a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth [G: numbereth] the host of the battle.

13:5 They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation [G: wrath], to destroy the whole land.

13:6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction [G:] from the Almighty.      qtext

13:7 Therefore shall all hands be faint [G: weakened], and every man's heart [G: all men's hearts] shall melt:

13:8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of [G: anguish and sorrow shall take] them; they shall be in [G: have] pain as a woman that travaileth: they [G: every one] shall be amazed one at another [G: at his neighbour]; their faces shall be as flames [G: like flames of fire].

13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate [G: waste]: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof [G omits] out of it.      qtext

13:10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations [G: planets] thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

[Isa 13:10, cf Mat 24:29 | Mar 13:24f]

13:11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity [G: visit the wickedness upon the world, and their iniquity upon the wicked]; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible [G: cast down the pride of tyrants] .

13:12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge [G: above the wedge of gold] of Ophir.      qtext

13:13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

13:14 And it shall be as the chased roe [G: doe], and as a sheep that no man taketh up : they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into [G: each one to] his own land.      qtext

13:15 Every one that is found shall be thrust [G: stricken] through; and every one that is joined unto them [G: whosoever joineth himself] shall fall by the sword.

13:16 Their children also shall be dashed to [G: broken in] pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.      qtext

13:17 Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it [G: nor be desirous of gold].

13:18 Their [G: With] bows also shall dash the young men to pieces [G: they destroy the children]; and they shall have no pity [G: compassion] on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare [G +the] children.

13:19 And Babylon [G: Babel], the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency [G: and pride of the Chaldeans], shall be as when God overthrew [G: the destruction of God in] Sodom and Gomorrah.

13:20 It shall never be inhabited [G: not be inhabited for ever], neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.

13:21 But wild beasts of the desert [G: Ziim] shall lie [G: lodge] there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures [G: Ohim]; and owls [G: ostriches] shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.

13:22 And the wild beasts of the islands [G: Iim] shall cry in their desolate houses [G: palaces], and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near [G: the time thereof is ready] to come, and her days [G: the days thereof] shall not be prolonged.

(Isa 13:13)

GF7:65 (1653): And so the power of the mighty God of life be with you, which is raising up his living seed, and the seed is one, which is turning up the earth, and cleaving it asunder, and removing it out of its place [Isa 13:13], and bringing into the faith of Abraham [Rom 4:16], and to the God of Abraham.

(Isa 13:14)

JN3:592 (Martha Simmonds, 1656): All the upright love thee, for they have been as a chased roe upon the mountains [Isa 13:14/Song 8:14], which have wanted a shepherd....

JN3:420 (1656): And thus Babylon's children are dashing one against another [Isa 13:16/Jer13:14].

(Isa 13:21)

IP3:446 (1670): For indeed, God's house and holy building is to be exalted [Isa 2:2], and all others to be left waste, and left desolate for the beast of the desert, and the dragons and owls, and birds of the night (which are unclean and noisome [Rev 18:2], and have not so much as a belief or hope to be throughly cleansed by the power of the Lord here in this life, nor ever knew what it was to bear the yoke of Christ's spirit and power [Mat 11:29]): I say, all others are to be left for such as these to lodge in, and for the satyrs and dark spirits to dance in [Isa 13:21].
