(1 Pet 1:3f)

MFU 114 (1654): of his free will hath he begotten many unto a lively hope, which shall live eternally [1 Pet 1:3f]

WPR 266 (1672): If that very same eternal, holy and unerring Spirit, which God poured out upon his only begotten Son, be in a way of succession ordained to continue with and upon all the faithful, his seed, and seed's seed, begotten unto a lively hope, by the raising of Christ Jesus from the dead [1 Pet 1:3], and so become members of his own glorious body, then are not the children of God destitute of his own unerring Spirit, nor left to their own frail and fallible judgments, to determine what is right or wrong....

WTG 76 (Susannah Morris, 1745): often enlivened with a hope to have the favours of heaven at last and be heirs of God's kingdom [1 Pet 1:3f]

[Other texts citing 1 Pet 1:4: GF8:32 (under Heb 2:7), MFU 76 (Mat 10:42)]

GF7:147 (1657): Which power ye receiving (who are in the light,) it brings you to become the sons of God [John 1:12], and to be heirs of the world where there is no end, and of the everlasting inheritance which fadeth not away [1 Pet 1:4], and the riches which are durable [Prov 8:18], where no thief can come, nor nothing to rust or canker [Mat 6:19f /Jas 5:3]; for that is out of the light that doth thieve, rust, or canker, and in the transgression.

JWJM 205 (1754): Did we so improve the gifts bestowed on us that our children might have an education suited to these doctrines, and our example to confirm it, we might rejoice in their being heirs to an inheritance incorruptible. [1 Pet 1:4]

IP3:214 (1672): "For ye are kept by the power of God, through faith unto salvation." [1 Pet 1:5] Keep to the power which preserves, "hold fast that which thou hast, let no man take thy crown." [Rev 3:11]

(1 Pet 1:6f)

GFJN 14 (16 ): One day, when I had been walking solitarily abroad, and was come home, I was taken up in the love of God, so that I could not but admire the greatness of his love; and while I was in that condition, it was opened unto me by the eternal light and power, and I therein clearly saw, that all was done and to be done in and by Christ; and how he conquers and destroys this tempter, the devil, and all his works [Heb 2:14/1 Jn 3:8], and is atop of him; and that all these troubles were good for me, and temptations for the trial of my faith [1 Pet 1:6f], which Christ had given me. The Lord opened me, that I saw through all these troubles and temptations.

(1 Pet 1:7)

GF7:253 (1664): Friends, this is the day of the trial of your faith [1 Pet 1:7], and therefore be faithful...

GF8:58 (1674): happy are they that are tried [Jas 1:12], that they may come forth more pure than gold [1 Pet 1:7]. [more under Jas 1:12]

MFU 378 (1664): blessed are you, whose faith fails not [Luke 22:32], but abides the fiery trial, which is to try everyone's faith [1 Pet 4:12]; and the faith which is tried, is much more precious than gold that perisheth [1 Pet 1:7].

IP3: 513f (1676): So the tender God of my life ... instruct you, preserve you, watch over you; exercise your spirits most advantageously, daily open you to himself; keep you empty and naked before him of all your own clothing and righteousness, and fill you with that which flows from the pure, living fountain; to the unspeakable joy of your hearts, and the glory of his own name over all for ever [1 Pet 1:8].

(1 Pet 1:9)

GF5:448 (1678): And all that look for a purgatory after they are dead, are not of that true catholic faith, which ... Jesus is the author of [Heb 12:2]. For they that receive the end of this catholic faith, receive the salvation of their souls. 1 Pet 1.9.

(1 Pet 1:10f)

IP4:248 (1671?): The prophets of old prophesied of the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 1 Pet 1:10-11. Now, what was the glory which should follow? Was it not the setting up Christ's inward and invisible kingdom in the hearts of men? ....

WPT 255 (1674, Mod Eng): Objection: If God has not revealed those things that are in Scripture, how could they have been known to us? Answer: They were known by the Light and Spirit of Christ before they were written–it is only after they were written down that they are called Scripture. It is said that the prophets carefully searched what and when the Spirit of Christ, that was within them, revealed when it foretold the sufferings of Christ [1 Pet 1:10f]

JN1:379 (1654): And whereas you say, it cannot be understood to be the word Christ that came to the prophets, Samuel, Jeremy, &c., where it seems your understanding is not that of the apostle, who said, "it was the spirit of Christ that was in them" (1 Pet 1:11), but all your wrestings [2 Pet 3:16] will not cover your folly.

(1 Pet 1:11f)

GF5:235 (1676): and the apostle, speaking of Christ, and of some searching the scriptures, when or what time the spirit which testified of Christ, which was in them, should declare the sufferings that should come unto Christ, and the glory which should follow [1 Pet 1:11G], unto whom it was revealed that not unto themselves, but unto us [1 Pet 1:12AV], (to wit,) the apostles, mark here, this was known by revelation, and can any know it, think you, without revelation of the same spirit, (to wit,) Christ and his glory...

GF8:80 (1676): Which gospel I received not of man, nor by man, but of the Lord Jesus Christ [Gal 1:12], by his holy spirit sent down from heaven [1 Pet 1:12].

JSS 47 (17--): ...in turning people "from darkness to light, and from the power of satan unto God" [Acts 26:18], the gospel was preached with the holy ghost sent down from heaven [1 Pet 1:12]; and from that day to this, the gospel of life and salvation has never been, nor ever can be, any otherwise preached.

GF (various phrases): GF7: immortal seed [GBT], everlasting seed of God, heavenly seed Christ Jesus; born of the word [all 1 Pet 1:23]

GF4:18 (1653): And the church in God [1 Th 1:1], is not in imitation, gathered from the letter, nor is a high-flown people in their imaginations, but are they who are born again of the immortal seed, by the word of God, which lives and endures forever [1 Pet 1:23], which the world knows not;

JN2:103 (1655): And thou talkest of many things without thee, as a law without, a light without, a word without, ... but with that eye which is single [Mat 6:22 | Luk 11:34], which is before the visible was, art thou seen & comprehended, and thy faith stands in visible things which shall perish, for what is seen is temporal [2 Cor 4:18], but so is not the law, and light, and word which endureth forever [1 Pet 1:23]....

IP3:57 (1667): There must be somewhat let down from God into a man's heart, to change his heart, and redeem it to God, or he cannot be saved. He must receive a seed, be born of a new and incorruptible seed, or he cannot be renewed from his corrupt nature and state.

IP4:347 (167-?): How are we of God in Christ Jesus [1 Cor 1:30], but by this seed of God, by being born of the Spirit of God, by being begotten out of the spirit of the world, into the nature and Spirit of Christ, from this immortal and incorruptible seed [1 Pet 1:23 AV,GBT] of life, truth, grace, and Spirit?

WPR 602/WPT 406 (1694): Oh ye children of the children of God, consider your standing, and see what you are in relation to this divine kindred, family and birth! Have you obeyed the incorruptible seed of the Word and Kingdom of God, of which you must be born again? [1 Pet 1:23] God is no respecter of persons [Acts 10:34]....

RBA 206 (1678, VIII.1): we do believe that to those in whom Christ comes to be formed [Gal 4:19] and the new man brought forth and born of the incorruptible seed [1 Pet 1:23], as that birth and man in union therewith naturally doth the will of God, so it is possible so far to keep to it as not to be found daily transgressors of the law of God.

JSS 7 (17--): Nothing but a true and living birth of God in the soul, of the divine and incorruptible seed [1 Pet 1:23], a real and substantial union of the divinity and humanity in one holy offspring, has ever brought salvation; and this, throughout all generations, (in all the true seed, in every heir of God and joint-heir with Christ [Rom 8:17]), is the only begotten of the Father [John 1:14].

1 Pet 2:14 often cited in tandem with Rom 13:3. E.g., in letters to both Oliver Cromwell (MFU 141, 1655) and Charles II (MFU 355, 1661?), Margaret Fell expresses the hope that they will be "a terror to evildoers and a praise to them that do well" [Rom 13:3/1 Pet 2:14].

[Other texts citing 1 Pet 2:14: GFJN 401 (under Mat 5:11), GF7:178 (Luk 3:14, Rev 13:10), GF8:88 (Mat 22:21)]

GF4:52 (1655): you shall have a crown that is immortal [1 Cor 9:25], that have kept yourselves from persecuting the innocent, and put a difference between the precious and the vile [Jer 15:19]; and to them that do well have been a praise [1 Pet 2:14]; and them that have reproved sin in your gates [Isa 29:21], have not been a prey, but ye have protected them, you have nourished them [Ezek 34:22f]; and the evil-doer hath not been strengthened [Jer 24:13]....

JN1:21 (1653): 6. Concerning magistracy. It is an ordinance of God, ordained "for the punishment of evildoers, and an encouragement for them that do well" [1 Pet 2:14]; where justice and righteousness is the head and ruleth without partiality, that land is kept in peace; and those that judge for the Lord [2 Chr 19:6], I honor as my own life....

WPR 471 (1678): If any should ask me, What are the things properly belonging to Caesar [Mat 22:21]? I answer in Scripture language, To love justice, do judgment, relieve the oppressed, right the fatherless [Isa 1:17], be a terror to evil-doers [Rom 13:3], and a praise to them that do well [1 Pet 2:14]; for this is the great end of magistracy.

GF4:208-215 (1660) [commentary on 1 Pet 2:17: its commands are not multiple choice]

GF4:210 (1660): And all ye cozeners, cheaters, [etc.], you live not in God's fear, therefore you cannot honour the king; for they who honour the king, must fear God, as ye may read, 1 Pet 2.17.

GF4:339 (1668): how can they say they esteem the king, or esteem any man, if they persecute him? and so as all true christians are brethren in Christ Jesus, they are to love the brotherhood, and so keep the law and command of Christ; and one christian persecuting another about religion and worship, is not to love the brotherhood.

GF7:68 (1656): "Honouring all men" [1 Pet 2:17], is reaching that of God in every man, for that brings to seek the honour of God [John 5:44];

IP3: 471 (1671): As for what he writes concerning fearing God and the king [1 Pet 2:17]; that God is to be feared first, and then the king; and if God command one thing, and the king the contrary, God is to be preferred, and the king is to be obeyed passively, when he cannot actively; in these things I fully assent unto him....

WPR 510 (1693): They honour all men [1 Pet 2:17] in the Lord, but not in the spirit and fashions of this world that pass away....
