A key to Biblical allusions in early Quaker writings and early Quaker uses of Biblical phrases
13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea [G12:18, B, T12:17: And I stood on the sea sand] and [GBT: +I] saw a beast rise up [GBT: omit] out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads [BT: head] the name of blasphemy. qtext
13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard [T: a cat of the mountain], and his feet were as the feet of a bear [G: like a bear's], and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat [G: throne], and great authority. qtext
13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after [G: and followed; T: at] the beast. qtext
[deadly wound healed: cf Rev 3:12]
13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make [GBT: omit] war with him? qtext

IP2:139 (1660): We read of the getting up of another power than Christ's in the church, after the days of the apostles. 2 Th 2:4, Rev 13:2, which power was to last forty-two months, even all the time of antichrist's reign; by which power the beast should make war with and overcome the saints in all kindreds, tongues, and nations. Rev 13:5-7.... Now this power will last in one form or another even till the very coming of Christ; and then shall that wicked spirit ... be discovered, by degrees consumed and at last destroyed [2 Th 2:8]. GF8: 56 (1674): And there are many names in the world by which there is no salvation; the beast hath many names [Rev 17:3], which all the world wondereth after [Rev 13:3], and receive the beast's mark [Rev 14:9, etc], that he marketh them with, his beastly spirit and power which he hath from the dragon [Rev 13:2]; but there is but one name under the whole heaven by which people shall be saved, and that is the name of Jesus [Acts 4:12]; and they gathering in his name [Mat 18:20], by whom the world was made [John 1:3], and receiving their Father, the Lord God Almighty's name and mark in their foreheads [Rev 14:1], Christ is in the midst of them [Mat 18:20], and they will not receive the beast's mark, nor will not be marked by him.

JN2:227 (1655): And so waiting in the light ... you will come to see some openings and promises of the Father's love to that seed which is breathing in you after him, and some hopes of pardon of sin in Christ Jesus, which condition many have come to, and then they have lost their condition by the mind's getting out of the fear and flesh exalting into the promise, and so come to get the wound healed before death be slain [Rev 13:3], but never come so far as to the washing thoroughly [Rev 7:14], nor to the marriage [Rev 19:9], but the light mind gets into this and tattles it out to others, and calls it experience, yet never came so far as to see Christ and the Father, yet after these doth the world wonder [Rev 13:3], notwithstanding they live in the same filth as they did formerly....
IP3:312 (1674): Man is to die; man is to be ceased from [Isa 2:22]; his understanding, his wisdom, is to be brought to nought [1 Cor 2:6]. But after it hath had a stroke and wound from God's Holy Spirit and power (even the very wound which tends to death), yet it will be getting life again (getting its deadly wound healed [Rev 13:3]), nourishing its life by those very notions, which came from that life and power, which in measure slew it.
(Rev 13:3f)
GF4:227 (1660): in the Revelations of John it is written, that all that dwelt upon the earth went after them [the beast, false prophets; Rev 13:3G, 8], and when they had got ahead in the world, they turned against the saints [Rev 13:7], and them that kept the testimony of Jesus [Rev 13:17/19:10], and overcame and killed them, and when he had overcome and killed them, then power was given to the beast over all kindreds, tongues, and nations [Rev 13:7], (mark) over the tongues, as well learned men as others, and then the cry was, Who was like unto the beast, who was able to make war with the beast? [Rev 13:4] Then he sat up his names, images, lying signs and wonders [Rev 13:13f/2 Th 2:9].
IP1:146 (1659): "all the world wondered after the beast, and they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast, and they worshipped the beast." Rev 13:3-4. The dragon is the devil; the beast is that spirit of the earth which he raiseth up, and feeds in men with a form and appearance of truth; to which he gives his power, his seat, and his authority: and every man hath a measure of this according to his state and condition, place and service in Babylon. And now what a man doeth here in religion, be he ever so devout and zealous, and frequent in ordinances and duties, is the worship of this spirit, and of the dragon who sits and rules in this spirit. IP3:398 (1677): The cry everywhere was, "Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with the beast?" [Rev 13:4] Indeed there appeared no power anywhere able to withstand or resist this power, which the dragon had, who gave it both to the beast which arose out of the sea [Rev 13:1f] and the beast which arose out of the earth [Rev 13:11f]; both which joined together to persecute all that would not drink out of the false church's cup which was golden without, but full of abomination and filthiness of fornication [Rev 17:4], fornicating from holy life, Spirit, and power of the Lamb inwardly, who is the head of the true church and true worshippers.
WPR 160 (1682): from an apostate she [the Roman/Anglican church] becomes a persecutor. 'Tis not enough that she herself decline from ancient purity; others must do so too: she will give them no rest, that will not partake with her in that degeneracy, or receive her mark [Rev 14:11]. Are any wiser than she? Than Mother Church? No, no: Nor can any make war with the beast she rides [Rev 13:4/17:3], those worldly powers that protect her, and vow her maintenance against the cries of her dissenters.

IP1:156f (1659): Yea, the beast which carried [the whore], which had many heads, horns, and crowns, he also had on his head "names of blasphemy" [Rev 17:3]. "And there was given to him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies" [Rev 13:5]. And he, with the whore together (for he did it at her spirit and instigation, by virtue of the wine he had drunk out of her cup [Rev 17:2]) "opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven" [Rev 13:6]. This hath been the work of the tongue, in every head of the beast; namely, to blaspheme the life, to blaspheme the true, living power, in all ages and generations, since the apostasy from the life and spirit of the apostles.

JN1:88 (1653): That is the blasphemer indeed which would have the truth checked and limited. It is written that the beast shall blaspheme God and his temple [Rev 13:6].
IP1:331 (1660): [discussing false teachers who "speak evil of dignities," 2 Pet 2:10, Jude 1:8]: See the dignities particularly expressed, Rev 13:6. The name of God, his holy power in his people; the tabernacle, which is sanctified and made honorable for him by his spirit; them that dwell in heaven, who are redeemed out of the earth [Rev 14:3], and have their conversation above [Phil 3:20]; these are dignities which the earthly authorities, nay, the false teachers themselves, never knew the worth of, so they are not afraid to blaspheme them.

GFJN 402 (Declaration of 1660): ...plotters, raisers of insurrections, tumultuous ones, and fighters, running with swords, clubs, staves and pistols one against another, we say, these are of the world and this hath its foundation from this unrighteous world, from the foundation of which the Lamb hath been slain [Rev 13:8], which Lamb hath redeemed us from the unrighteous world, and we are not of it [John 15:19], but are heirs of a world in which there is no end and of a kingdom where no corruptible thing enters [Rev 21:27].
GF8:130 (1676): know your faith, to stand in the seed that bruiseth the head of it [Gen 3:15]; which seed, Christ, is your rock and foundation [1 Cor 3:11, 10:4], who will raze down the foundation [Psa 137:7] of the world of wickedness, from which foundation the lamb hath been slain [Rev 13:8].
JN2:552 (1655): Thou further tells me, that if I had minded the Scriptures more and my imaginations less I might have seen that the scripture, Rev 13:8, means not of the Lamb slain, but of Beast-worshippers. To which I say, were I so blind as to leave both the Spirit and Scripture also and believe by blind imaginations, contrary to both, then should I become a Beast-worshipper like thee....
IP1:405 (1660): ...it is impossible for fallen man to attain to so much as one true breathing or desire after God again; this must arise from the grace, from the mercy, from a new begetting (from the free gift) towards life, towards the divine image again; which was slain in man (and the impression of it on him wholly lost) ever since the foundation of the world [Rev 13:8] in his heart, which God hath set there, ever since he chose it.
WPT 199 (1674; Works I:573 DQC): The Light, or rather he that is Light in Man ... hath been according to Scripture, as a Lamb slain since the Foundation of the World [Rev 13:8]: That is, the World had not been long created, before Man being envied by Lucifer the fallen Angel [Isa 14:12] was betrayed of his Innocency by him; and Sin, by Disobedience, prevailing, the Light or Principle of Life, under whose holy Leadings Man was placed, became resisted, grieved, and as it were slain.... GF5:132f (1675): "I beheld another beast come out of the earth with two horns, like the lamb" [Rev 13:11]; Mark, here the beast would be like the lamb, but he speaks like the beast, not the lamb. And this beast did great wonders, he caused them that dwelt upon the earth to worship the first beast, and as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
So he made all, great and small, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive his mark in their right hand, and in their forehead [Rev 13:13-16]; so he marked them, and sealed them with his evil spirit. And God seals with his good spirit; ye are sealed with the spirit (saith the apostle, Eph 4:30) unto the day of redemption; and they that are seals can set to their seals that God is true [John 3:33], that keep the testimony of Jesus the spirit of prophecy [Rev 19:10].
(Rev 13:11-13)
IP1:356 (1660): Mark: the beast which appeared with horns like a lamb [Rev 13:11], as if it had Christ's power, and maketh fire to come down from heaven in the sight of men [Rev 13:13] (and who can deny these to be of God, that can do such things!) this very beast compelleth, or causeth to worship [Rev 13:12]. So this beast, which appears like a lamb, joins with the first beast whom it had set up under another appearance, and both compel to the worshipping of an image of the truth (of such an image of the truth as they think good to advance), and seduce from the truth itself. And he that will not be deceived with their image, with their likeness, with that which they call the truth and way of God, or order of the gospel, and so shall refuse to bow thereto, he shall not be permitted either to buy or sell. [Rev 13:16f]. There is no living with men within their bounds, unless they will bow to their image. But the true Lamb doth not compel, but calls to wait on the Father's drawings [John 6:44], till the Father by his spirit make willing.

MFU 78f (1654): thou must first see thyself to be the first beast, with his 10 horns pushing [Rev 13:1], and who is full of the names of blasphemy [Rev 17:3], before thou know what the second beast is (which rises out of the earth) which hath but two horns [Rev 13:11]. And what we do understand, thou shalt never know till thou knowest thyself, for we know thee to be of the first beast, and we know the second beast; but the second beast from thee is hid, who art of the first beast and doth the works both of the first and second.
JN1: 286 (1654): A book being brought to my hand, entitled Freedom of Religious Worship; or, the Jubilee of Ordinances, no name I find in it; yet the spirit I know and from whence it hath its rise, who seems to have horns like a lamb but hath the mouth of a dragon [Rev 13:11], speaking great swelling words [Jude 1:16] as though he would make fire come down from heaven in the sight of men [Rev 13:13], telling of great things that shall be: an appearance of Christ to come, he knows not when, but like the Jews is become an open persecutor of him where he is made manifest....

IP1:145 (1659): Satan used all his art, and all his strength, to conceive and bring forth this mystery of iniquity [2 Th 2:7], so like the mystery of godliness [1 Tim 3:16], that it might pass for current in the world, and he rule as God in it. With all power, &c., no power of deceit wanting; he did not spare for signs, and lying wonders [2 Th 2:9]; yea, he gave power to the beast to do wonders and miracles, even to make fire come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men [Rev 13:13f] (which was the sign and wonder whereby the God of Israel was distinguished from Baal [1 Ki 18:21-39]; power to work this very sign Satan gives to the beast, to confirm the godhead of the dragon with). These are the things men look for; see but great power, signs, miracles, they are satisfied. The whole world stands ready to be deceived with this.

MFS 87 (1656, to the Ranters): You and your power are contrary and act contrary to the power of God. Therefore do you and your power give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should speak and does speak in you [Rev 13:15]. GF5:213 (1676): For John the divine, saith in his revelations, "that the beast compelled all, both small and great, to worship him, and to receive his mark" [Rev 13:15f]. So we do not read that Christ, or John, or the apostles compelled any, but the beast. And he saith, "that the beast that did compel, received his power from the dragon" [Rev 13:2,4]; so did not receive it from God and Christ.
IP1:25 (1658): "And he caused all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark" some way or other, either in their right hand, or in their forehead [Rev 13:16]. MFS 90f (1656): RANTERS: Men, in their dark knowledge of the one power in his several workings, say one number worships one God, the god of the world [2 Cor 4:4], another company a God which is not of the world [John 17:14], whereas God is but one, working to the pleasure of his good will [Phil 2:13]. ANSWER: You who are of the dark knowledge, under the prince of the power of darkness [Eph 2:2/Col 2:13], do not know nor ever shall know the eternal power of the living God, but to your destruction, for He is come and made manifest, who reproves the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment [John 16:8]. Now is the time that you and your god are judged, and your number, as you call them, who are of the number of the beast (Rev 13:18].
Job Scott, Journal 99f (1797 DQC): [continued from quote under Rev 8:1] And now, in confirmation that this is the meaning of the number seven, as comprehensive of all the seals that can possibly seal up divine truth from man,—let us observe, that when John calls upon him that has wisdom, (divine wisdom, for all else ever fails) to count the number of the beast, or the number of his name, which he expressly says is the number of a man, he plainly shews us that the whole, the utmost number of a man, and of all his workings, buildings, comprehendings and conceivings, which make up the whole life, power, policy, religion and worship of the beast, is comprehended in sixes—and that there is not one seven in it all. For, says he, his number is six hundred three-score and six, that is, 666 [Rev 13:18]. Here we see, that although the workings of a man may be multiplied to ten times, and even an hundred times of the six working days, wherein he rests not from his own works [Heb 4:10] nor comes to the true sabbath (wherein no creaturely work is done, not even a fire of his own sparks or creaturely animation and warmth kindled [Isa 50:11]) it is all but the number of the beast or false worship, and man-made creeds and systems.

So they that have slain the witnesses, and killed the saints, have been in all this confusion; and the witnesses are rising [Rev 11:11], and the everlasting gospel shall be preached again (amongst them that have had the words, but have slain the life of the prophets and the apostles) unto all nations, kindreds, and tongues of them that dwell upon the earth [Rev 14:6].

IP1:51 (1659): [quotes Rev 14:6] Mark: the gospel that was preached to the nations all the time of the apostasy, was not the everlasting gospel; that gospel did not bring life and immortality to light [2 Tim 1:10]; but they were hid from men's eyes, and men had only a sound of words instead of the thing. And thus poor nations, kindreds, people, tongues, were everywhere bewitched with a form of things; with outward knowledge, a perishing knowledge [1 Cor 8:11] in the perishing part; a vain, traditional, invented worship, which stands in the wisdom and will of man; but had no union and fellowship with that which is everlasting.
SIW 173 (Ann Crowley, 17--) : my mind is led to crave for thousands, and tens of thousands of my fellow creatures, of every nation, kindred, tongue, and people [Rev 14:6], that they may come to the knowledge of the Lord our God, and Jesus Christ, our blessed Redeemer...

IP3:313 (1674): ...in the pure fear [Psa 19:9 LXX] (not that which is taught by the precepts of men [Isa 29:13], but which God puts into the heart [Jer 32:40]) faith hath its strength, and exercises its strength.... And when the angel preached the everlasting gospel, how did he preach it? "Fear God, and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgments is come," &c. [Rev 14:6f] When the pure fear is felt, when that which is contrary to God is judged; then the gospel is known, and the work thereof experienced in the heart. And how easy is it, when the pure fear is felt, to distrust and deny one's self, and trust in the Lord! Oh, how weak are the reasonings and imaginings then, and how strong is the power which scatters them, and lifts up the head over them!
IP4:70f (1671): Quest. Why doth God after the apostasy send an angel to preach the everlasting gospel [Rev 14:6], after a manner different from what it was preached before the apostasy? How was it preached before the apostasy? Was it not preached thus, That in Christ alone is remission of sins, and salvation through faith in his blood [Rom 3:24f]? Is not an angel from God sent to preach it thus: Fear God, and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgment is come; and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters [Rev 14:7]? Is this the same gospel that was preached before? How different is the sound thereof! Surely this would seem not the same, but rather another gospel [Gal 1:6], to any man who is not taught of God [John 6:45], and hath not received of him the true understanding to observe and discern the nature of things. [discussion continues to p 73]
HPS 321f (Rebecca Travers, 1669): the apostle Paul saith, the gospel is the power of God unto salvation [Rom 1:16], and that the Word in the heart, and in the mouth, was the gospel he preached [Rom 10:8],and the everlasting gospel proclaimed by an angel through heaven was, fear God and give glory to him, for the hour of his righteous judgment is come [Rev 14:6f]; but these did not say Christ's death and burial were the gospel, but who are witnesses of his resurrection do know the gospel [Acts 4:33]; but the opposers of the Light in the conscience see it not.
WPR 35 (1668): For I proclaim, another way there is not to eternal life and peace, than this everlasting gospel which is now preached [Rev 14:6]; for the time is come that the angel of his presence [Isa 63:9] is flying through the midst of heaven, having this ancient gospel to preach to them that dwell upon the earth, and are in their earthly nature, wisdom and worships, crying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgment is come [Rev 14:7].

14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are [G: omits] the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth [G: are fully blessed; BT: hereafter]: Yea [GBT: Even so], saith the Spirit, that they may [G: for they; B: that they] rest from their labours; and their works do [T: shall] follow them. qtext

GF7:297 (1667): And Christ is the vine [John 15:1] that affords this new wine, which is put in the new bottle [Luke 5:38]; and, they that believe in his light, and become children of his light [John 12:36], sit under his vine, and drink of his wine. And Adam in the fall is the old bottle, that holds the old wine of transgression, where all the sour grapes are, and they that sit in transgression drink of the sour grapes [Jer 31:30], of which their bottle is full, full of the wine of the wrath of fornication [Rev 14:8]. So they will not drink of the new [Luke 5:39].
IP1:52 (1659): "Babylon is fallen, is fallen! that great city! because she made all nations drunk of the wine of the cup of her fornication." Rev 14:8. And now the new wine of the kingdom [Mat 26:29], which is tasted of in the everlasting gospel [Rev 14:6], purges out the old wine [1 Cor 5:7?]; and the drunkenness which thereby came upon the nations wastes. And they that have tasted of this life, and know this life, can never be bewitched back again by the whorish spirit, to dead forms and likenesses without life. Nay, when Babylon falls, she can rise no more.

GF7:229 (1662): they that worship God in the spirit and in the truth [John 4:23f], are in that which the devil is out of [John 8:44], and the dragon's worship, and the beast's worship [Rev 14:9,11], and the will-worship [Col 2:23] are out of; who worship in the truth and in the spirit, are over all these worships. For truth is before they all were, (and the spirit,) and will stand when they are all gone [1 Esd 4:38].
IP3:400 (1677): Oh! therefore let everyone consider what the beast is, and what his image, and what the mark in the forehead, and what the right hand; and take heed he be not found worshipping the beast and his image [etc, rest of Rev 14:9], lest God make him to drink [etc.], and he be tormented [rest of 14:10], and have no rest day or night [Rev 14:11]. I had rather run great hazards outwardly, and suffer much affliction and persecution from men, to keep my soul true to God, in the spiritual worship and testimony which he hath given me, against all false ways and invented worships, than expose my soul to the hazard of drinking of this dreadful cup of God's indignation; which the Lord God of tender mercies teach men, and give them true wisdom, to avoid and escape.

GF3:528 (1659): [opponent:] "That the evil spirits are both sinful and reasonable." A. This is a lie, for reasonable is not sinful, but unreasonable is sinful, they have not the faith [2 Th 3:2]: and if the evil spirit be reasonable, and the good reasonable, they are both one, and who then is unreasonable? If the evil spirit be reasonable, thou puttest no difference between the precious and the vile [Jer 15:19]; thou hast the mark of a blind guide, and a false prophet in the forehead [Mat 23:16/Rev 14:9].
JN2:101 (1655): that seed is taught of God [John 6:45] what to honour, and to honour that which God honors [John 8:54?], and this is no spirit of delusion, incivility, or like brute beasts [Jude 1:10] as thou callest it, for that is the beast which which worships the beast and his image [Rev 14:9], where it is; and thou art the false prophet that pleads for it [Rev 19:20]....

GF6:110 (1682): [connects Rev 14:13 with John 8:23f] And they that do not believe in Christ, that die in their sins [John 8:24], they cannot sleep in Christ, when they put off their earthly tabernacle [2 Cor 5:1/2 Pet 1:14], nor die in the Lord. "For blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, &c., the Spirit saith, that they rest from their labours, and their works do follow them [Rev 14:13]".
SIW 39 (Lydia Rawlinson Lancaster, 1729): It is our duty both to pray and to be engaged in our own particulars for the work going on which is begun in the earth, many of our worthy fathers being gone to rest from their labours [Rev 14:13], and we, who remain in their places, are passing on after them towards eternity.

14:19 And the angel thrust in his [GB: +sharp] sickle into [GBT: on] the earth, and gathered [GBT: cut down] the vine [GBT: vines (BT: grapes) of the vineyard] of the earth, and cast it [GBT: them] into the great winepress [BT: wine-vat] of the wrath of God. qtext

GF7:78 (1654): This is the word of the Lord to all Friends, and fellow-labourers in the truth, who are subduing the earth [Gen 1:28], and its earthly knowledge, and its carnal wisdom, and beating down and threshing down that, in hope to get forth the wheat [Rev 14:14f], and to be made partakers of your hope [1 Cor 9:10]....
GF7:262 (1664): the prophet is arisen and arising [John 7:52], and the everlasting gospel shall be, and is preached again to all nations, kindreds, tongues, and peoples [Rev 14:6], of them that dwell upon the earth; and the reapers are going forth to reap people down, and so up to God [Rev 14:14f], and to bring them into the barn [Mat 13:30], and to gather the wheat into the garner [Mat 3:12]. And people shall come to worship God ..., and the beast's worship, and dragon's worship, and the great whore's church is falling.... Reap out, reap out, reap out, I say, (with the power of God,) ye reapers unto the Lord, for here is the day of harvest; for as the other falls, the day of harvest is known, a day of gathering; for it is that which hath inwardly ravened that hath scattered [Mat 7:15, John 10:12]
