WDS 267 (1688): The body of sin [Rom 6:6] is a loadstone to draw you from the life of God, and from glorying in the cross of Christ [Gal 6:14]; this is is flesh and blood, and flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God [1 Cor 15:15]. For the Lord's sake, for your soul's sake, and for the sake of your eternal happiness, put not off this work, but pursue it, and it will be perfected. HPS 499 (Ann Whitehead and Mary Elson, 1680): And this I do declare, that it was the same everlasting quickening power that first visited us by the Spirit of judgment and of burning [Isa 4:4], and wrought in our inward parts mightily, even as the little leaven in the three measures of meal [Mat 13:33], to purify and to cleanse, to purge out [1 Cor 5:7] and put under all that was contrary to the Lord, and to make us habitations fit to do his will, that gathered us and made us a Meeting, and the same has been with us to this very day, blessed and magnified be his name forever.
SIW 122 (Priscilla Hannah Gurney, 18–): I ventured to decline the part assigned me; not in wilful disobedience, but under the idea, that a still further confirmation would thus be obtained... a confirmation was indeed afforded me. The withdrawing of heavenly light and peace immediately succeeded. Many gloomy seasons were my portion, before such right exercise became renewed in my mind, by the spirit of judgment and burning [Isa 4:4], as rendered it more quick of understanding in the fear of the Lord.

SBD 40 (1750): ...in Isaiah [5:1-7]... God sets forth the house of Israel under the parable of a vineyard, and the men of Judah as his pleasant plants. Having bestowed great husbandry on the yard, he looked for fruit agreeable thereto, but being disappointed, he thus complains, "When I looked for grapes," (meaning thereby the fruits of righteousness, judgment and truth, agreeable to the law of that just God from whom they had received so many and unparalleled favours) "they brought forth wild grapes." Meaning thereby oppression, cruelty, disobedience and injustice, such fruits as the Gentiles (who had not been favoured like the Jews) brought forth agreeable to the nature of their degenerate and corrupt hearts.
JWJM 50 [quoting epistle from General Spring Meeting, 1755]: If contrary to this we profess the Truth, and not living under the power and influence of it are producing fruits disagreeable to the purity thereof and trust to the strength of man to support ourselves therein, our confidence will be vain. For he who removed the hedge from his vineyard and gave it to be trodden underfoot by reason of the wild grapes it produced [Isa 5:1-7] remains unchangeable. GF7:43 (1653): Quench not the spirit [1 Th 5:19], by which ye may prove all things, and that which is good hold fast [1 Th 5:21]; for if the spirit be quenched, then light is put for darkness, and darkness for light, and evil is put for good, and good for evil [Isa 5:20].... but when the spirit is not quenched, then with the spirit ye may see the good, to take the good, and the evil to shun. And this brings to put a difference between the precious and the vile [Jer 15:19], the profane and the holy, the clean and the unclean [Lev 10:10]; the spirit is it that proves all things.
IP2:184, EQ 378 (1661): It is a miserable thing to be deceived about that which is good; to put good for evil, light for darkness, sweet for bitter [Isa 5:20], and so, under a mistake at least, become a persecutor of the good. All good is of God, and he that is against good is against God; and it is a dreadful thing for the creature to set himself in battle against his Creator, and to engage the power and wrath of the Omnipotent One against him; though while the eye is shut, it doth not appear to men either that they are against God, or that their danger is so great thereby as indeed it is.
RBA 435, RBAF 394 (1678, XV.3): some, to whom it is said, "Your Excellency," [have] nothing of excellency in them; and who is called "Your Grace," appears to be an enemy to Grace: and he who is called, "Your Honor," is base and ignoble. I wonder what law of man, or what patent ought to oblige me to make a lie, in calling good, evil; and evil, good [Isa 5:20]?
HPS 401 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): But as for such who will not believe in this principle of God, but instead of owning it as his power unto salvation [Rom 1:16], say it is a Satanical suggestion; and instead of owning it to be of the divine nature of God or Christ, they call it the dim light of created nature, putting bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter, counting darkness light, and light darkness [Isa 5:20]; such may continue in their bondage and vassalage under the prince and power of darkness, in the blindness of their minds, hardness of their hearts, and deadness of their spirits, notwithstanding freedom and liberty, life and immortality is brought to light through the gospel [2 Tim 1:10].
5:21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! qtext

5:22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle [G: to them that are strong to pour in] strong drink:
5:23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! qtext
5:24 Therefore as the [G +flame of] fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff [G: as the chaff is consumed of flame] , so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom [G: bud] shall go up as [G: rise up like] dust: because they have cast away [G: off] the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised [G: contemned] the word of the Holy One of Israel. qtext
5:25 Therefore is the anger [G: wrath] of the LORD kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth [G: out] his hand against [G: upon] them, and hath smitten them: and the hills [G: mountains] did tremble, and their carcases were>torn[L: as dung] in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is [G: wrath was] not turned away, but his hand is [G: was] stretched out still.
5:26 And he will lift up an ensign [G: a sign] to the nations from far [G: afar], and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly [G: hastily with speed]. qtext
5:27 None shall be weary nor stumble [G: faint nor fall]; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken:
5:28 Whose arrows are [G: shall be] sharp, and all their [G: his] bows bent, their [G: his] horses' hoofs shall be counted [G: thought] like flint, and their [G: his] wheels like a whirlwind:
5:29 Their [G: His] roaring shall be like a lion, they [G: he] shall roar like young lions [G: lions' whelps]: yea [G omits], they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe [G: they shall take it away] , and none shall deliver it.
5:30 And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if one [G: they] look unto the land [G: earth], behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof [G: shall be darkened in their sky].

JN1:68 (1653): Woe to you that are wise in your own eyes and prudent in your own sight [Isa 5:21], you that think to understand the spiritual things of God by your carnal wisdom [mar: John 14:17, Jude 1:10]; and because God will not reveal his secrets to your serpentine wisdom, therefore you speak evil if it where it is revealed, though you know it not; your wisdom is of the earth and feedeth upon dust, and dust is the serpent's meat [Isa 65:25].
HPS 326 (Rebecca Travers, 1669): Why hast not thou with thy great understanding, that seems so wise in thy own eyes [Isa 5:21], as to gainsay the Truth that is received and believed by thousands, come forth, and tell where this Light testified of by the Apostle is, if not in the conscience?

JWJM 218 (1762): Making constructions of the Law contrary to the true meaning of it was common amongst that people. Samuel's sons took bribes and perverted judgment [1 Sam 8:3]. Isaiah complained that they justified the wicked for reward [Isa 5:23]. Zephaniah ... on account of the injustice of the civil magistrates declared that those judges were evening wolves, and that the priests did violence to the law [Zeph 3:3f].

WPR 121 (1671): Oh! fear & tremble before him, all ye inhabitants of the country, and let your joy be turned into sadness and your rejoicing into mourning [Lam 5:15/Jas 4:9], lest he consume you as a consuming fire the stubble [Isa 5:24], and scatter you as the whirlwind the chaff [Hos 13:3]; for the night is far spent [Rom 13:12], and the Day approaches, & the secrets of every heart shall be revealed....

JN3:528 (1656): Thou hast set us as upon a rock [Mat 7:24f], so that the floods of the ungodly [Psa 18:4] cannot move us; thou hast lifted up an ensign [Isa 5:26], and the heathen are angry, the pride of the nations hath gathered against thee [Psa 2:1f]....
