Luk 13:1 There were [G: +certain men] present at that season some [GT: omit; B: certain men] that told [GBT: shewed] him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices [BT: own sacrifice].      qtext

Luk 13:2 And Jesus answering [GBT: answered, and] said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the [GBT: greater sinners than all the other] Galilaeans, because they suffered such things [BT: punishment]?

Luk 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent [G: amend your lives], ye shall all likewise [T: in like wise] perish.

Luk 13:4 Or [G: +think you that] those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they [G omits] were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

Luk 13:5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent [G: amend your lives], ye shall all likewise perish.

Luk 13:6 He spake also [B: told also: T: put forth] this parable [similitude]; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

Luk 13:7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking [GBT: have I come and sought] fruit on [G: of; BT: in] this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground [G: keepeth it also the ground barren]?      qtext

Luk 13:8 And he answering [GBT: answered, and] said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig [GBT: dig round] about it, and dung it [T: +to see whether it will bear fruit]:

Luk 13:9 And if it bear fruit &[T omits], well [B: thou mayest let it alone; T omits] : and if not [BT: it bear not], then after that thou shalt [T omits] cut it down.

§98 (Luk 13:10-17)

Luk 13:10 And he was teaching [GBT: taught] in one of the synagogues on the sabbath [G: +day; BT: +days].

Luk 13:11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself [G: could not lift up herself in any wise; B: could in no wise lift up her head; T: could not lift up herself at all].

Luk 13:12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed [T: delivered] from thine infirmity [GBT: thy disease].

Luk 13:13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight [G: +again], and glorified God.

Luk 13:14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore [T omits] come and [B: that ye may] be healed, and not on the sabbath day.

Luk 13:15 The Lord then answered him [GT: Then answered him the Lord; B: But the Lord answered him], and said, Thou [GT omit] hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath [GBT: +day] loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away [BT omit] to watering [GBT: the water]?

Luk 13:16 And ought not this woman, being a [GBT omit] daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath [G: had] bound, lo, these [GBT omit] eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?      qtext

Luk 13:17 And when he had [GB omit; T: thus] said these things [T omits], all his adversaries were ashamed: and [G: but] all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things [G: at all the excellent things; BT: on all the excellent deeds] that were done by him.

Therefore, in the fear of the Lord God stand, and be low and humble; for he that brings down, and and humbles that nature which would be up, he shall be exalted. So learn of him, who is low and meek [Mat 11:29], who makes clean the house in every particular.

GF8:53 (1673): And therefore you that are redeemed from these things by Christ, and from the feasting of the rich, and all other their vanities, and voluptuous dishonouring of God therein; I say to you, mind and practise Christ's words, [quotes Luk 14:12-14]. So here you may see how Christ ordereth thee to make a feast or a dinner, and to whom, contrary to the world; and though it be a cross to them, yet it is to be obeyed, and observed, and practised; for it is the heavenly man's doctrine, and command, and will, and he that doth it shall know his doctrine; and this will judge the world in their vain feasts, dinners, and suppers, which they make for the rich, for which they have self-reward

WPR 646 (1699): Eat to live, not live to eat, for that's below a beast. Avoid curiosities and provocations; let your chiefest sauce be a good stomach, which temperance will help to get you. True, many would have excused their following of him, in the parable of the feast; some had bought land, some had married wives, and others had bought yokes of oxen and could not come [Luk 14:18-20]; that is, an immoderate love of the world hindered them: their lawful enjoyments from servants became their idols, they worshipped them more than God, and would not quit them to come to him.

GF7:46 (1653): But every one wait in the pure spirit to guide you to God, then ye shall see the promise of God fulfilled in you, and the springs of life opened to you, and refreshment daily coming in from the Lord; and then ye will come to walk with the Lord, forsaking all, father, mother, wife, and children, lands, livings, and all. [Mat 19:29] Here is joining to the Lord, as one spirit [1 Cor 6:17]; and he that doth not forsake all, is not worthy of him [Luk 14:33 / Mat 10:37].

IP2:118 (1660): [Opponent cites Luk 14:33, Col 3:2] ... it is not the doing of things which is of value; for man may imitate and strive to do much, and may go a great way in forsaking all [Luk 14:33], and in taking off his affections from things [Col 3:2] (insomuch as he may give all his goods to the poor, and his body to be burned, and yet it profiteth him nothing [1 Cor 13:3]; but it is the doing of things in the virtue, the life, and the power which comes from Christ, which is of acceptance with God, and of advantage to the soul.

§105A-C (Luk 15:1-10 | §78Q Mat 18:12-14)

Luk 15:1 Then drew near [resorted] unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.

Luk 15:2 And [G: Therefore] the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man [GBT: He] receiveth [T: received to his company] sinners, and eateth with them.

Luk 15:3 And he spake [G: Then spake he; B: But he put forth; T: Then put he forth] this parable [T: similitude] unto them, saying,

Luk 15:4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the [GBT omit] ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it [T: him]?

Luk 15:5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it [T: him he putteth him] on his shoulders, rejoicing [GBT: with joy].

Luk 15:6 And when [BT: as soon as ] he cometh home, he calleth together his friends [BT: lovers] and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.

Luk 15:7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over [G: for (2x)] one sinner that repenteth [G: converteth], more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance [G: men, which need none amendment of life].      qtext

Luk 15:8 Either what woman having ten pieces of silver [GT: groats], if she lose one piece [G: groat; BT omit], doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?      qtext

Luk 15:9 And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends [BT: lovers] and her neighbours together [GT omit], saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece [GT: groat] which I had lost.

Luk 15:10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy [B: shall there be joy; T: joy is made] in the presence of the angels of God over [G: for] one sinner that repenteth [converteth].

(Luk15:7)

JWJM 186 [aftermath of dream, 1772]: ...I lay still for a time, and at length I felt divine power prepare my mouth that I could speak, and then I said, "I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ that liveth in me, [quotes rest of Gal 2:20]." Then the mystery was opened, and I perceived there was joy in heaven over a sinner who had repented [Luk 15:7] and that that language John Woolman is dead meant no more than the death of my own will.

(Luk15:8-10)

GF8:110 (1676): And the parable of Christ, concerning the woman that lost her piece of silver, who lighted a candle and swept her own house, and found it in her own house; and when she had found it, she rejoiced, and told her neighbours [Luk 15:8f]. And must not every woman light her own candle at the light of Christ Jesus, and sweep her own house with the power of God, before she finds God's treasure? And then for joy that they have found it, go and declare it unto their friends and neighbours? And do not all those women that have found this, preach Christ to their friends and neighbours, and call them together? For may they not be suffered after they have lost an outward treasure, and found it again, to call their neighbours together to rejoice with them, which they may find by lighting an outward candle? But their spirits being the candle of the Lord [Prov 20:27], this must be lighted at the heavenly light and fire, by which their everlasting treasure is found; and must not they say then to their neighbours and friends, rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which was lost? ‘Likewise, I say unto you,’ saith Christ, ‘there is joy in the presence of the angels of God, over one sinner that repenteth [Luk 15:10];’ as you may see in Luk xv.

IP2:299 (John Crooke, 1662): Then I thought I would venture on some way where it was most likely to find a lost God, and I would pray with them that prayed, and fast with them that fasted, and mourn with them that mourned, if by any means I might come to rest; but found it not, until I came to see the candle lighted in my own house, and my heart swept [Luk 15:8] from those thoughts, and imaginations, and willings, and runnings [Rom 9:16], and to die to them all, not heeding of them, but watching against them, lest I should let my mind go a-whoring after them.

HPS 305 (Susannah Blandford, 1700): ... found that satisfaction and rest to my travelling soul [Mat 11:29], that I could not find by all my undertakings, though I sought them sincerely in visible things; until I turned to the Word of God in my heart [Deut 30:14], and by the light thereof saw to sweep my own house, wherein I found the lost piece [Luk 15:8]....

WPR 605, WPT 412 (1694): If you would know God and worship and serve God, as you should do, you must come to the means he has ordained and given for that purpose. Some seek it in books, some in learned men, but what they look for, is in themselves, but they overlook it. The voice is too still [1 Ki 19:12], the seed too small [Mat 13:31f | Mar 4:31], and the Light shineth in darkness [John 1:5]. They are abroad, and so cannot divide the spoil [Psa 68:12]; but the woman that lost her silver found it at home, after she had light her candle and swept her house [Luk 15:8]. Do you so too, and you shall find what Pilate wanted to know, viz. Truth [John 18:38].

§105D (Luk 15:11-32)

Luk 15:11 And he said [G: He said moreover], A certain man had two sons:

Luk 15:12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion [T: my part] of goods that falleth to me [BT: to me belongeth]. And he divided unto them his living [GBT: substance] .

Luk 15:13 And not many days after the younger son [GB: not long after, when the younger son had] gathered all [BT: +that he had] together, and [GB: he] took his journey into a far country, and there [GT: +he] wasted his substance [GBT: goods] with riotous living.      qtext

Luk 15:14 And [G: Now] when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine [GBT: great dearth] in [G: throughout; B: in all; T: throughout all] that land; and he began to be in want [G: be in necessity; BT: lack].

Luk 15:15 And [G: then] he went and [B omits] joined himself [GT: clave] to a citizen of that country; and he [T: which] sent him into his fields [GB: to his farm; T: to his field] to feed [T: keep his] swine.

Luk 15:16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks [BT: cods] that the swine did eat [GT: ate]: and [G: but] no man gave unto [G: them; T omits] him.      qtext

Luk 15:17 And when [GBT: Then he] he came to himself, he [GBT: and] said, How many hired servants of [GBT: at] my father's [B: house] have bread enough and to spare [GBT omit], and I perish with [GT: die for] hunger!

Luk 15:18 I will arise and go to my father, and will [G omits] say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

Luk 15:19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

Luk 15:20 And [G: So] he arose, and came [T: went] to his father. But [GT: Anf] when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

Luk 15:21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight [G: before thee], and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

Luk 15:22 But [G: Then] the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe [BT: garment], and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

Luk 15:23 And bring hither the fatted [GB: fat] calf, and kill it [GT: him]; and let us eat, and be merry:      qtext

Luk 15:24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is [G: but he is; T: and is now] found. And they began to be merry.

Luk 15:25 Now his elder son [GBT: the elder brother] was in the field: and as [GBT: when] he came and drew nigh [G: near] to the house, he heard musick [G: melody; BT: minstrelsy] and dancing.

Luk 15:26 And he [GBT omit] called one of the servants, and asked what these [GBT: those] things meant.

Luk 15:27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted [GB: fat] calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

Luk 15:28 And [G: Then] he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.

Luk 15:29 And [G: But] he answering [GBT: answered and] said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed [GBT: have I done thee service, neither brake] I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me [T: gavest thou me never so much as] a kid, that I might [BT: to] make merry with my friends [T: lovers]:

Luk 15:30 But as soon [G: when] as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living [G: good; BT: goods] with harlots, thou hast killed for him [GBT: for his sake (BT: pleasure) killed] the fatted [GB: fat] calf.

Luk 15:31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art [T: wast] ever with me, and all that I have is thine.

Luk 15:32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and [G: he was lost, but he] is found.

IP1:89 (1658): For though I had a true taste of life and power from God, yet not knowing the foundation, there could be no true building with it; and so the spirit was quenched [1 Th 5:19], the life wasted, the portion spent upon harlots [Luk 15:13], the true bread [John 6:32] lost, the chaff and husks fed upon [Luk 15:16], without the least satisfaction to the soul; the sense whereof, when the spirit of the Lord awakened me, did almost overwhelm me.

SIW 136 (Mary Alexander, 1800): I felt my mind in a peculiar manner engaged for the welfare of some individual, who, like the prodigal son, "wasted his substance with riotous living, [Luk 15:13]" believing our heavenly Father was still graciously disposed to receive such a one in mercy, if there were a willingness to return unto him.

(Luk15:16-20)

JN1:159 (1653): And see yourselves the prodigal: when he saw himself what he had done, went home unto his father's house [Luk 15:16-20]; and thou hast read of a prodigal in the Scripture that fed among swine, but dost thou see thyself to be the prodigal feeding among the swine, feeding on husks? Is this opened to thee? Dost thou know what this husk is? ... when thou art come to thy Father's house thou wilt see that thou hast been feeding among the swine on the letter, the outside which profits not.

(Luk15:16)

A common Quaker phrase, "feed on the husk and neglect the kernel", appears to refer to Luk 15:16. Cf Jer 23:28: "What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord." and Num 6:4: All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk." Cf GF7:202, "put the wheat for the tares" [Mat 13:24-30].

[Other texts citing Luk 15:16: GF7:23 (under Rev 18:11), GF7:58 (Mat 7:6), MFS 16 (Mat 3:12), MFU 198 (Gen 2:17, Mat 18:3), IP1: 89 (Luk 15:13), 241f (Mat 11:25)].

GF3:336 (1659): They go in the wallowing mire like swine [2 Pet 2:22], and like the prodigal feeding on the husk [Luk 15:16], who go into the signs and shadows, and from the body, Christ [Col 2:17], the life, the substance, and come not into the rest, the body [Heb 4:3-11], and hold not the head [Col 2:19]. And so they satisfy the flesh, and run into the mire, and wallow there, and are satisfying it; and such are the intruders, worshipping angels [Col 2:18], will-worshippers [Col 2:23], without the body.

EQ 179 (Francis Howgill, 1655): Oh, when will you be weary of feeding on the wind [Hos 12:1], and of husks among swine [Luk 15:16], and on that which dies of itself [Lev 22:8]? And when will you inquire after the living God, who is power?

(Luk15:23-32)

IP2:383 (1663): If [the Lord] please to kill the fatted calf, and set it before his prodigal son, let none that have walked faithfully with him in any dispensation be offended thereat [Luk 15:23-32]; but rather let all (in whom is life) stand ready to shout at the issuings forth of love and mercy, in the varieties of the dispensations thereof, according to the need and capacity of every sort of vessels, prepared by the Lord to receive it.

§106 (Luk 16:1-12)

Luk 16:1 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same [G: and he; T: that] was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.

Luk 16:2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.      qtext

Luk 16:4 I am resolved what to [G: know what I will; BT: wot what to] do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.

Luk 16:6 And he said, An hundred measures [T: tuns] of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill [G: writing], and sit down quickly, and write fifty.

Luk 16:7 Then said he to another, And how much [GB: How much; T: What] owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures [T: quarters] of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill [G: writing], and write fourscore.

Luk 16:8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for [G: Wherefore] the children of this world are in their generation [B: nation; T: kind] wiser than the children of light.      qtext

Luk 16:9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves [GBT: you] friends of the mammon of unrighteousness [G: with the riches of iniquity; BT of the unrighteous (T: wicked) mammon]; that, when ye fail [G: shall want; B: shall have need; T: shall depart], they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

Luk 16:10 He that is faithful in that which is [G: the] least is faithful also [G: he is also faithful; T: the same is faithful] in much: and he that is unjust [B: unrightheous (2x); T: unfaithful (2x)] in the least is unjust also in much.      qtext

Luk 16:11 If therefore ye [G: If then ye; BT: So then if ye] have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon [G: wicked riches; T: wicked mammon], who will commit to your trust the true riches [GB: trust you in the true treasure? T: believe you in that which is true]?      qtext

(Luk16:2)

GF8:97 (1676): For the power and spirit of God gives liberty to all; for women are heirs of life as well as the men, and heirs of grace [1 Pet 3:7], and of the light of Christ Jesus, as well as the men, and so stewards of the manifold grace of God [1 Pet 4:10]. And they must all give an account of their stewardship [Luke 16:2], and are to be possessors of life, and light, and grace, and the gospel of Christ, and to labour in it [Phil 4:3]; and to keep their liberty and freedom in it, as well as the men.

(Luk16:8)

GF7:52 (1653): Hold your freedom, and keep and stand fast in it [Gal 5:1], that ye may be armed with wisdom, and furnished against your enemies, who are wiser in their generation than the children of light [Luke 16:8]. But the wisdom of the Most High is spreading, and making itself manifest in your hearts, by which ye may comprehend the world's wisdom, the world's worship and knowledge.

JWJM 263 (17–): It was his own saying that the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of Light [Luk 16:8], and it appears by experience that in awakening and cherishing the spirit of pride and the love of praise in children they may sometimes be brought on in learning faster than they would otherwise; but while in learning any art or science they accustom themselves to disobey the pure Spirit and grow strong in that wisdom which is foolishness with God [1 Cor 1:20], they must have the painful labour of unlearning a part of what they thus learned, before they are adopted into the divine family.

(Luk16:10f)

GF8:220 (1682): And Christ saith, "He that is faithful in that which is least, is faithful also in much; and he that is unjust in the least, is unjust also in much [Luke 16:10]." And further he saith, "If ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, or riches, who will commit unto you the true riches?" [Luke 16:11] Therefore there must be a justness and faithfulness in the outward riches between man and man, if you will have a place in your hearts for the true heavenly riches: the inward faithfulness to God bringeth forth faithfulness to men in outward things.

(Luk16:11)

WDS 109 (to Judge Fell, 1655): ... if thou diligently incline thine ear to his counsel [Isa 55:2f], and wait for his power to guide thee in perfect obedience to the measure received; then ... would the wisdom of the Father be given in the state and condition he hath placed thee in, to be a faithful steward over the unrighteous mammon [Luk 16:11], to use it in its right place for which it is created; and then he will make thee partaker of the true substance, Christ the fulness of all things.

(Luk16:19-31)

GF4:198f (1659): And as for your saying it is your liberty to wear cuffs, beads, rings, jewels, [etc.] ...; it is the liberty of the flesh [Gal 5:13], and the king of pride's kingdom, in his dominion in the earth; destroying ... and devouring the creatures, and this liberty is your own bondage who are servants of corruption [2 Pet 2:19], and this liberty will be your burthen, and ... will stand you in no stead, who will be found as Dives, that rich glutton, that fared sumptuously every day, and the poor beggar hath a greater share in the kingdom, with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, than you; and sits in his bosom in that kingdom, when the other is in the lake [Luk 16:19-31].

GF5:271-7 (1677): [long diatribe identifying Quakers as poor Lazaruses and their persecutors as the rich men. See excerpt under Jas 5:5f.]

EQ 382 (Elizabeth Hooton, 1651): O friend, mercy & true judgment [Zech 7:9] & justice is cried in your streets. O take heed of the woes: Woe be to the crown of pride [Isa 28:1]; woe be unto them that drinketh in bowls [Amos 6:6], & the poor is ready to perish. O remember Lazarus & Dives [Luk 16:19-31]: ... Dives that man fared deliciously [Luk 16:19BT] every day, & the other a beggar. O friend, mind these things, for they are near you; see that you be not the man.

(Luk16:19)

IP1:162 (1659): [Babylon] is rich with her merchandize, and she enjoys it to the full, she takes the pleasure of it. She builds costly houses, wears rich apparel, fares deliciously [Luk 16:19BT] (read spiritually with the spiritual eye)....

JWJM 177n (1772): Some having large possessions and not dwelling in the pure fear of the Lord, but going on and arraying themselves in purple and fine linen and faring sumptuously every day [Luk 16:19] –these open a channel for business which serves to please that mind which wanders, and the pursuit hath a tendency to a great increase of labour like that mentioned by the prophet, where people labour as in the fire and weary themselves with very vanity [Jer 51:58].

JWJM 244 (17–) : ...were these to change circumstances a while with some who labour for them... and come to a feeling knowledge of the straits and hardships which many poor, innocent people pass through in a hidden obscure life, were these who now fare sumptuously every day [Luk 16:19] to act the other part of the scene till seven times had passed over them [Dan 4:25], and return to their former estate, I believe may of them would embrace a way of life less expensive and lighten the heavy burdens [Isa 58:6] of some who now labour out of their sight to support them and pass through straits with which they are but little acquainted.

IP1:254 (1659): Do not lie secure in the whore's wisdom! Do not lie slumbering, and reasoning, and disputing from the letter of the Scripture, till the gathering be finished, till the door be shut, till the eternal flames seize upon you, and ye find yourselves in the bosom of hell unawares, and see the children of the kingdom in Abraham's bosom [Luk 16:23f], but yourselves shut out, and left to weep, and wail, and gnash your teeth [Mat 8:12 | Luk 13:28].

(Luk16:26)

IP3:124 (1668): ... if ye be not really in the thing itself, but only in the apprehensions and conceivings about it, ... ye will find that there is a great gulf between you and us, which ye cannot possibly pass over [Luk 16:26], till ye meet with our principle and guide, and faithfully travel with him in the footsteps of the flock [Song 1:8], that ye may come to the Shepherd's tents (even the tents which the Shepherd pitcheth, which no man can pitch), and may know the true tabernacle [Heb 8:2], sanctuary, and temple, of which he is Master.

(Luk16:31)

GF6:362f (1688): as Abraham said to the rich man that was in hell, "If they will not hear Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if one rose from the dead [Luk 16:31]." For these were the Jews to whom Christ spake this parable, who set up their traditions, and made the word of God and his command of none effect [Mat 15:6], so they were not like to hear Moses and the prophets, who like the apostate Christians now, set up their vain traditions above the holy scriptures of truth, and allow the ignorant people to read their traditions, and deny them the reading of the scriptures, contrary to the holy men of God that gave them forth [2 Pet 1:21], to be read, believed, fulfilled, and practised, as in 2 Tim 3:16, John 7:38, Luk 24:25, 1 Th 5:27.

GF3:562 (1659): You say, "Forgive us as we forgive them that trespass against us" [Mat 6:12/Luk 17:3f]. Is it so? Do ye do so? ... Would you have God forgive you who trespass against him, no other ways, but as you forgive trespasses against you? mark, whether you would have as you say? and whether here be not justice? and whether you can witness you are forgiven that do not forgive others? whether you have the assurance within you?

(Luk17:5)

IP3:312f (1674): This I have also observed: that all notional faith, where is not the living virtue ... the enemy will let the soul alone with, and let him enjoy peace in; but his war is desperately against ... faith in the true power, against faith in the light of life. Oh, how many sore and sharp assaults doth he make against the faith which receive his virtue from God, and causeth the soul to live to God! And how sore is it with the soul, when faith is weak, and the enemy comes on against it with the strength of his assaults and temptations. "Lord increase our faith," said the sensible disciples [Luk 17:5].

(Luk17:6 | cf Mat 17:20)

IP3:446f (1670): [Luk 17:6, see under Mat 17:20]

(Luk17:10) [unprofitable servant: in 18th cent., stock phrase for not taking credit for ministry]

GF3:502f (1659): P. "No man is able to keep the commands of God perfectly; we break them daily in thought, word, and deed. And in all our best duties we are unprofitable servants [Luk 17:10]." A. Here you show that you do not love God, for he who loves God keeps his commandments, and love fulfills them [1 Jn 5:3]: and in all your best duties you are but unprofitable servants, in that we do believe you. So your preaching and praying are unprofitable, so you judge yourselves out of your own mouths; singing, instructing, praying, all are unprofitable, and you are the slothful servants [Mat 23:26], who are reprobates to every good work [1 Tim 1:16].

GF6:171 (1684): [quotes Luk 17:10] So here you may see, that which would boast of his doings is to be kept down, and kept out, for it is every servant of God’s duty to do his will.

JN2:153 (1655): We know God freely gives a measure of his Spirit to every one of us, freely to profit withal [1 Cor 12:7]; and improving that to his praise we receive more freely, and we are so far from engagement of God by all we do that we find ourselves unprofitable servants [Luk 17:10]....

RBA 196 (1678, VII.10): Obj. But they object that works are not necessary to justification, first, because of the saying of Christ [quotes Luk 17:10]. Answer: As to God we are indeed unprofitable, for he needeth nothing, neither can we add anything unto him; but as to ourselves we are not unprofitable, else it might be said that it is not profitable for a man to keep God’s commandments, which is most absurd and would contradict Christ’s doctrine throughout. [Cites and discusses Mat 5:3-12, Mat 25:14-30]

SIW 165 (Ann Crowley, 1812): we were favoured to feel a peaceful retreat after having endeavoured, according to the small ability possessed to keep our ranks in righteousness, and fill up our measure of suffering for our great Master and the church’s sake; and though feelingly adopting the language, "We are unprofitable servants [Luk 17:10]," yet we could say, the Lord’s strength was made perfect in our weakness [2 Cor 12:9]

WDS 25 (1655): There was ... much speaking of God, called preaching, and professing him in words, from the letter of the Scripture, what the saints had spoken forth, thus imitating the saints’ practice in a carnal wisdom, and seeking the kingdom of God in outward observations [Luk 17:20], as I had done before...; although I walked strictly with them in their outward observations and in running to hear one man after another, called ministers, yet I found no rest nor peace to my weary soul [Mat 11:29].

IP2:119 (1660): "The kingdom of God cometh not by observation" [Luk 17:20]; the wisest Scribes and Pharisees could not know it by all the observations which they could gather out of Moses’ and the prophets’ writings; nor can any now know it by any observations which they can gather out of the apostles’ writings; but by being born of that Spirit whereof they were born [John 3:4], and by being formed in that womb wherein they were formed, by this means alone is the thing come to be known which they knew.

GF3:46f (1659): P. And his principle is, "that the place where Christ shall come to judgment, is at the mount of Olives, on the east side of Jerusalem." A. Thou hast put him far enough off from thee, and hast not yet judged thyself, (and Christ is come to judgment), and so art one of the false prophets, who bid people look for him beyond the sea [Deut 30:13], "Lo here, lo there" [Luk 17:21]: but but who are come to Christ, the light, the life [John 1:4], they need not go forth [Mat 24:26]; they who abide here are sealed by the Spirit [Eph 1:13, 4:30], and put not off the good and evil day.

GF8:50 (1673): They that receive the Lord's power must ... not look out [Eccl 12:3?], for his kingdom without, like a company of Pharisees, lo here, lo there Mat 24:23 |[Luk 17:21], but as Christ, the power of God [1 Cor 1:24], is known within, (as Christ said the kingdom of heaven is within [Luke 17:21],) and as they come to feel it there, they shall know the shakings and earthquakes, and wars, and rumours [Mat 24:6f], and that part that pertains to nations, that must be shaken [Heb 12:27] before they come to be of the holy nation [1 Pet 2:9], which is against the other; and this is to be known, and seen, felt, and fulfilled with the power of Christ Jesus, and by his spirit; as they that live in it may take a prospect of these wonderful things and workings of the Lord God and his power in this age. Therefore be still in the power of God, which is your keeper [1 Pet 1:5]....

JN2:299 (1655): as Christ the true light and shepherd is gathering the seed, the tares are bundling together [Mat 13:30]; and as they come nearer the fire their smoke ariseth whereby to darken the light of the sun [Rev 9:2]. But who takes Christ’s counsel keeps within, where the kingdom and light is [Luk 17:21], and goes not forth after them [Mat 24:26], and such their smoke cannot blind....
