GF7:312 (1668): .... out of the truth [John 8:44] are all those found, fasting to smite with fists of wickedness [Isa 58:4], lifting up bloody hands, mingling their sacrifices with the blood of the persecuted [Luk 13:1], praying to the magistrates for persecution.

GFJN 206 (1655): Are not these [who follow after the fashions of the world] the spoilers of the creation, and have the fat and the best of it, and waste and destroy it? Do not these cumber God's earth [Luk 13:7]? Let that of God in all consciences answer, and who are in wisdom, judge.

JN2:101 (1656): Thou sayest the spirit of God teacheth you to honor all men [1 Pet 2:17]; and here thou art seen in thy own will and personal admiration, honoring thou knowest not what with the proud clothing and the gold ring [Jas 2:1-3], men in their greatness and pride, and this is not in the Lord but in the earth. And thou beliest the Spirit of God if thou do say it teacheth this honor, and condemns the practice of the saints, yea Christ himself, who could not honor Herod here, but called him a fox though he was a King [Luk 13:32]; and by the spirit of Jesus that honor is judged to be for the dust [Psa 7:5], and that which here thou honorest, for condemnation.

GF6:474f (168-?) And there was scarce a righteous man, or a prophet, but they suffered in outward Jerusalem, by the transgressing Jews; for Christ said, "Nevertheless I must walk to-day, and to-morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem." [Luk 13:33]. But God is setting up his new and heavenly Jerusalem [Rev 21:2], into which ... no persecutor nor unclean person can enter [Rev 21:27]....

GF3:320 (1659): The law says, "Thou shalt not bear a burthen on the sabbath day [Jer 17:21-24]." Now Christ the end of the law [Rom 10:4], and the end of the shadow, that fulfils it [Mat 5:17], and is rest [Mat 11:28f], often gives rest upon that day; yet he is not a breaker of the sabbath, but a fulfiller, and convinces the gainsayers, with this: "Which of you having an ox or ass fallen into a ditch, would not pluck him out on that day?" MFU 96, HPS 458 (1654): And I warn you, and charge you, in the presence of the living God, that you beware of strife amongst you, and of that spirit which exalts itself: For, he that exalts himself, shall be brought low [Luk 14:11]; the Lord hath said it: And your Lord and Master, Christ Jesus, knows that spirit, and will bring it down to the dust. WPR 646 (1699): Eat to live, not live to eat, for that's below a beast. Avoid curiosities and provocations; let your chiefest sauce be a good stomach, which temperance will help to get you. You cannot be too plain in your diet, so you are clean; nor too sparing, so you have enough for nature. For that which keeps the body low, makes the spirit clear, as silence makes it strong.... Much less feast any, except the poor; as Christ taught, Luk 14:12, 13. For entertainments are rarely without sin; but receive strangers readily.


IP3:368 (1675): He with whom Christ sups, who hath heard Christ knocking at the door, hath opened to him, and received him in, to purify his heart, and dwell in him, and sup with him, and give him to sup with himself [Rev 3:20]; so that he eats bread in the kingdom [Luk 14:15], and drinks wine in the kingdom [Mat 26:29], and partakes of the feast of fat things [Isa 25:6], which God makes to Israel in his holy mountain, he is without doubt one of Christ's, and partakes of this in and through him.


WPR 167 (1682): This [submission to the will of the Father] made those honest fishermen desert their lawful trades and follow him (when he called them to it) [Mat 4:18-22], and others, that waited for the consolation of Israel [Luk 2:25], offered up their estates, reputation, liberties, and also lives, to the displeasure and fury of their kindred, and the government they lived under, for the spiritual advantages that accrued to them by their faithful adherence to his holy doctrine. True, many would have excused their following of him, in the parable of the feast; some had bought land, some had married wives, and others had bought yokes of oxen and could not come [Luk 14:18-20]; that is, an immoderate love of the world hindered them: their lawful enjoyments from servants became their idols, they worshipped them more than God, and would not quit them to come to him.

IP3:200 (1671): Hath not God created the waster to destroy [Isa 54:16]? And hath he not power over him? And doth he not limit him in the midst of his destroying work? But did God create him to destroy his heritage? or will God suffer him to do so? They may indeed destroy the buildings which are not of God? but God is the wise, great Master-builder [1 Cor 3:10], who counted the cost before he began [Luk 14:28], and knew he was able to maintain his building, against all the oppositions and opposers, which could rise up against it.

GF3:562 (1659): You say, "Forgive us as we forgive them that trespass against us" [Mat 6:12/Luk 17:3f]. Is it so? Do ye do so? ... Would you have God forgive you who trespass against him, no other ways, but as you forgive trespasses against you? mark, whether you would have as you say? and whether here be not justice? and whether you can witness you are forgiven that do not forgive others? whether you have the assurance within you?

WDS 25 (1655): There was ... much speaking of God, called preaching, and professing him in words, from the letter of the Scripture, what the saints had spoken forth, thus imitating the saints’ practice in a carnal wisdom, and seeking the kingdom of God in outward observations [Luk 17:20], as I had done before...; although I walked strictly with them in their outward observations and in running to hear one man after another, called ministers, yet I found no rest nor peace to my weary soul [Mat 11:29].
