§97 (Luk 13:1-9)

Luk 13:2 And Jesus answering [GBT: answered, and] said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the [GBT: greater sinners than all the other] Galilaeans, because they suffered such things [BT: punishment]?

Luk 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent [G: amend your lives], ye shall all likewise [T: in like wise] perish.

Luk 13:4 Or [G: +think you that] those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they [G omits] were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

Luk 13:5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent [G: amend your lives], ye shall all likewise perish.

Luk 13:6 He spake also [B: told also: T: put forth] this parable [similitude]; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

Luk 13:7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking [GBT: have I come and sought] fruit on [G: of; BT: in] this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground [G: keepeth it also the ground barren]? qtext

GFJN 206 (1655): Are not these [who follow after the fashions of the world] the spoilers of the creation, and have the fat and the best of it, and waste and destroy it? Do not these cumber God's earth [Luk 13:7]? Let that of God in all consciences answer, and who are in wisdom, judge.

MFU 112 (1654): ...so my dear brethren, in the eternal life of God & in his power tread the winepress without the city [Rev 14:20], trample down the desert, & by the eternal word and judgment cut down all fruitless trees that cumbers the ground [Luk 13:7], tread upon the deceit, which is above, & come under to the pure which is eternal of God in every one's conscience....

JN1: 232 (1654): Woe unto you that have taken counsel at your own wisdom, and multitudes, and not at the Spirit of the Lord [Isa 30:1], and have strengthened yourselves by riches [Psa 52:7]. Woe unto your fruitless trees: you have long been digged and pruned, but no fruits; you have long cumbered the ground [Luk 13:7]. Woe unto you that are at ease in Zion [Amos 6:1].

WPR 145 (1677): Let all the sinful lusts be famished, let the stubble be burnt [Mal 4:1], and the corrupt, yea, the fruitless tree that cumbreth the ground, be cut down and cast into the fire [Luk 13:7]. Let the work of the Lord be done in you; let him purge his floor, and that thoroughly [Mat 3:12 | Luk 3:17]; that you may come out pure as gold seven times tried [Psa 12:6 / Zech 13:9], fitted for his use that hath chosen you; that you may bear his mark, and wear his inscription, Holiness to the Lord [Exo 28:36]; so you will be vessels of honour in his house [2 Tim 2:21].

§98 (Luk 13:10-17)

Luk 13:10 And he was teaching [GBT: taught] in one of the synagogues on the sabbath [G: +day; BT: +days].

Luk 13:11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself [G: could not lift up herself in any wise; B: could in no wise lift up her head; T: could not lift up herself at all].

Luk 13:12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed [T: delivered] from thine infirmity [GBT: thy disease].

JN2:287 (1656): And this is thy daughter thou boasts on and calls her a daughter of Abraham [Luk 13:16], who is a daughter of disobedience [Eph 2:2], strengthening herself against the word of the Lord because the instrument had not seen her face, resisting in her own will the tender of eternal love, and this thou calls "strength in weakness" [2 Cor 12:9], which is obstinate wickedness, and that both she and thou must know when you have finished your measure [Mat 23:32]; and of her blood I am clear forever [Ezek 33:4-6].

Luk 13:22 And he went through the [GB: all; T: all manner of] cities and villages [GBT: towns], teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.

Luk 13:23 Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,

Luk 13:24 Strive [T: +with yourselves] to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

Luk 13:25 When once the master [GBT: the good man] of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye [T: ye shall] begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:

Luk 13:26 Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.

Luk 13:27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.

Luk 13:28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you [GT omit; B: ye] yourselves thrust out [GT: +at doors].

Luk 13:29 And they shall come [G: Then shall come many] from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down [G: at table] in the kingdom of God.

Luk 13:34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the [BT omit] prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather [GT: gathereth] her brood [B: brood; T: nest] under her wings, and [T: but] ye would not!

Luk 13:35 Behold, your house is [T: habitation shall be] left unto you desolate: and verily [B: Verily; T: For] I say unto [GT: tell] you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when [GBT: that] ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

JN2:101 (1656): Thou sayest the spirit of God teacheth you to honor all men [1 Pet 2:17]; and here thou art seen in thy own will and personal admiration, honoring thou knowest not what with the proud clothing and the gold ring [Jas 2:1-3], men in their greatness and pride, and this is not in the Lord but in the earth. And thou beliest the Spirit of God if thou do say it teacheth this honor, and condemns the practice of the saints, yea Christ himself, who could not honor Herod here, but called him a fox though he was a King [Luk 13:32]; and by the spirit of Jesus that honor is judged to be for the dust [Psa 7:5], and that which here thou honorest, for condemnation.

GF6:474f (168-?) And there was scarce a righteous man, or a prophet, but they suffered in outward Jerusalem, by the transgressing Jews; for Christ said, "Nevertheless I must walk to-day, and to-morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem." [Luk 13:33]. But God is setting up his new and heavenly Jerusalem [Rev 21:2], into which ... no persecutor nor unclean person can enter [Rev 21:27]....

Luk 14:1 And it came to pass [T: chanced], as he went [G: that when he was entered; BT: that he went] into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that [G omits; BT: and] they watched him.

Luk 14:2 And, behold, there was a certain [T omits] man before him which had the dropsy.

Luk 14:3 And Jesus answering [BT: answered and] spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

GF3:320 (1659): The law says, "Thou shalt not bear a burthen on the sabbath day [Jer 17:21-24]." Now Christ the end of the law [Rom 10:4], and the end of the shadow, that fulfils it [Mat 5:17], and is rest [Mat 11:28f], often gives rest upon that day; yet he is not a breaker of the sabbath, but a fulfiller, and convinces the gainsayers, with this: "Which of you having an ox or ass fallen into a ditch, would not pluck him out on that day?" [Luk 14:5]

Luk 14:13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

Luk 14:14 And thou shalt be blessed [BT: happy]; for [G: because] they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just [BT: +men].

MFU 96, HPS 458 (1654): And I warn you, and charge you, in the presence of the living God, that you beware of strife amongst you, and of that spirit which exalts itself: For, he that exalts himself, shall be brought low [Luk 14:11]; the Lord hath said it: And your Lord and Master, Christ Jesus, knows that spirit, and will bring it down to the dust. Therefore, in the fear of the Lord God stand, and be low and humble; for he that brings down, and and humbles that nature which would be up, he shall be exalted. GF8:53 (1673): And therefore you that are redeemed from these things by Christ, and from the feasting of the rich, and all other their vanities, and voluptuous dishonouring of God therein; I say to you, mind and practise Christ's words, [quotes Luk 14:12-14]. So here you may see how Christ ordereth thee to make a feast or a dinner, and to whom, contrary to the world; and though it be a cross to them, yet it is to be obeyed, and observed, and practised; for it is the heavenly man's doctrine, and command, and will, and he that doth it shall know his doctrine; and this will judge the world in their vain feasts, dinners, and suppers, which they make for the rich, for which they have self-reward

WPR 646 (1699): Eat to live, not live to eat, for that's below a beast. Avoid curiosities and provocations; let your chiefest sauce be a good stomach, which temperance will help to get you. You cannot be too plain in your diet, so you are clean; nor too sparing, so you have enough for nature. For that which keeps the body low, makes the spirit clear, as silence makes it strong.... Much less feast any, except the poor; as Christ taught, Luk 14:12, 13. For entertainments are rarely without sin; but receive strangers readily.

IP3:368 (1675): He with whom Christ sups, who hath heard Christ knocking at the door, hath opened to him, and received him in, to purify his heart, and dwell in him, and sup with him, and give him to sup with himself [Rev 3:20]; so that he eats bread in the kingdom [Luk 14:15], and drinks wine in the kingdom [Mat 26:29], and partakes of the feast of fat things [Isa 25:6], which God makes to Israel in his holy mountain, he is without doubt one of Christ's, and partakes of this in and through him.

WPR 167 (1682): This [submission to the will of the Father] made those honest fishermen desert their lawful trades and follow him (when he called them to it) [Mat 4:18-22], and others, that waited for the consolation of Israel [Luk 2:25], offered up their estates, reputation, liberties, and also lives, to the displeasure and fury of their kindred, and the government they lived under, for the spiritual advantages that accrued to them by their faithful adherence to his holy doctrine. True, many would have excused their following of him, in the parable of the feast; some had bought land, some had married wives, and others had bought yokes of oxen and could not come [Luk 14:18-20]; that is, an immoderate love of the world hindered them: their lawful enjoyments from servants became their idols, they worshipped them more than God, and would not quit them to come to him.

IP3:200 (1671): Hath not God created the waster to destroy [Isa 54:16]? And hath he not power over him? And doth he not limit him in the midst of his destroying work? But did God create him to destroy his heritage? or will God suffer him to do so? They may indeed destroy the buildings which are not of God? but God is the wise, great Master-builder [1 Cor 3:10], who counted the cost before he began [Luk 14:28], and knew he was able to maintain his building, against all the oppositions and opposers, which could rise up against it.

GF7:46 (1653): But every one wait in the pure spirit to guide you to God, then ye shall see the promise of God fulfilled in you, and the springs of life opened to you, and refreshment daily coming in from the Lord; and then ye will come to walk with the Lord, forsaking all, father, mother, wife, and children, lands, livings, and all. [Mat 19:29] Here is joining to the Lord, as one spirit [1 Cor 6:17]; and he that doth not forsake all, is not worthy of him [Luk 14:33 / Mat 10:37].

IP2:118 (1660): [Opponent cites Luk 14:33, Col 3:2] ... it is not the doing of things which is of value; for man may imitate and strive to do much, and may go a great way in forsaking all [Luk 14:33], and in taking off his affections from things [Col 3:2] (insomuch as he may give all his goods to the poor, and his body to be burned, and yet it profiteth him nothing [1 Cor 13:3]; but it is the doing of things in the virtue, the life, and the power which comes from Christ, which is of acceptance with God, and of advantage to the soul.

JWJM 186 [aftermath of dream, 1772]: ...I lay still for a time, and at length I felt divine power prepare my mouth that I could speak, and then I said, "I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ that liveth in me, [quotes rest of Gal 2:20]." Then the mystery was opened, and I perceived there was joy in heaven over a sinner who had repented [Luk 15:7] and that that language John Woolman is dead meant no more than the death of my own will.

GF8:110 (1676): And the parable of Christ, concerning the woman that lost her piece of silver, who lighted a candle and swept her own house, and found it in her own house; and when she had found it, she rejoiced, and told her neighbours [Luk 15:8f]. And must not every woman light her own candle at the light of Christ Jesus, and sweep her own house with the power of God, before she finds God's treasure? And then for joy that they have found it, go and declare it unto their friends and neighbours? And do not all those women that have found this, preach Christ to their friends and neighbours, and call them together? For may they not be suffered after they have lost an outward treasure, and found it again, to call their neighbours together to rejoice with them, which they may find by lighting an outward candle? But their spirits being the candle of the Lord [Prov 20:27], this must be lighted at the heavenly light and fire, by which their everlasting treasure is found; and must not they say then to their neighbours and friends, rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which was lost? ‘Likewise, I say unto you,’ saith Christ, ‘there is joy in the presence of the angels of God, over one sinner that repenteth [Luk 15:10];’ as you may see in Luk xv.

IP2:299 (John Crooke, 1662): Then I thought I would venture on some way where it was most likely to find a lost God, and I would pray with them that prayed, and fast with them that fasted, and mourn with them that mourned, if by any means I might come to rest; but found it not, until I came to see the candle lighted in my own house, and my heart swept [Luk 15:8] from those thoughts, and imaginations, and willings, and runnings [Rom 9:16], and to die to them all, not heeding of them, but watching against them, lest I should let my mind go a-whoring after them.

WDS 25 (1655): There was ... much speaking of God, called preaching, and professing him in words, from the letter of the Scripture, what the saints had spoken forth, thus imitating the saints’ practice in a carnal wisdom, and seeking the kingdom of God in outward observations [Luk 17:20], as I had done before...; although I walked strictly with them in their outward observations and in running to hear one man after another, called ministers, yet I found no rest nor peace to my weary soul [Mat 11:29].
