GFJN 17 ([1647]): The law of God takes hold upon the law of sin and death [Rom 8:2]; but the law of faith [Rom 3:27], or the law of the spirit of life [Rom 8:2], which is the love of God, and which comes by Jesus, (who is the end of the law for righteousness' sake [Rom 10:4],) makes free from the law of sin and death. This law of life fleshly-minded men do not know [Rom 8:6]; yet they will tempt you, to draw you from the spirit into the flesh, and so into bondage [2 Pet 2:18f].

GF7:280 (1666): And he that hath the son of God hath life [1Jn 5:12] eternal abiding in him; and so in this eternal life you have an eternal fellowship with God and his son, and with one another [1 Jn 1:3, 7]. And in this the law of life, that is in Jesus Christ, passeth sentence on the law of sin and death [Rom 8:2] in every man and woman, and brings it to the execution. Through which law of life righteousness flows, and runs down as a stream [Amos 5:24], and also justice and truth. Here by this law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus, (mark, in Christ Jesus,) you come to know the Lamb's throne, and the throne of iniquity [Psa 94:20] thrown down, its mouth stopped [Psa 107:42], and the chambers of imagery [Ezek 8:12] thrown down, and the household of God raised [Eph 2:19]; the fruitless trees thrown down [Luke 13:6f], and the plant of God raised up, which is of his own planting; a tree of righteousness [Isa 61:3], whose fruit is unto holiness, whose end is everlasting life [Rom 6:22].

IP2:348 (1663): Quest. 6. Then may a man be justified who never heard outwardly of Christ? Ans. If he feel the seed of life, be overcome by its nature, give up to its law, as it is made manifest in his heart, abhor the nature and law of the sin of death [Rom 8:2], and thus in soul cleave unto the Lord, and follow him as he pleaseth to lead, the Spirit and life of the Lord cannot but herein justify him; and the grace and mercy of the Lord cannot withhold giving him out his pardon for his sins past (and also pass by his future frailties), although he distinctly know not how to sue out and plead it.

IP3:82 (1668): he saith, "The law of reason ... is called a law of sin and death, it being given unto reason, because reason is sin; for there is nothing doth break the law but reason." Observ. Those that are delivered by the powerful appearance of Christ from the law of sin and death, knows it to be another law than the law of reason, even a law contrary not only to the Life of Christ, but to the reason and understanding of a man, bringing him below the state of reason, even into brutish captivity and sensuality.

TEM 18 (16–): Now also did I receive a new law – an inward law superadded to the outward – the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus [Rom 8:2], which wrought in me against all evil, not only in deed and in word, but even in thought also; so that everything was brought to judgment, and judgment passed upon all. So that I could not any longer go on in my former ways and course of life; for when I did, judgment took hold upon me for it.

RBA 67, RBAF 51 (1678, III.2, continued from under Rom 6:14): Hereunto the apostle commends the elders of the Church, saying (Acts 20:32), "And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the Word of his Grace, which is able to build you up, and to geve you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified." He doth not commend them here to outward laws or writings, but to the Word of Grace, which is inward; even the spiritual law, which makes free, as he elsewhere affirms [quotes Rom 8:2]. This spiritual law is that which the apostle declares he preached and directed people unto, which was not outward, as by Rom 10:8 is manifest [quote].....

HPS 386 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): as there is a coming to this law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus [Rom 8:2] (which Law is inward, written in the heart, and engraven on the inward parts [Jer 31:33]) there is a setting free from the law of sin and death: And so we come to know a blotting out of the law of commandments contained in ordinances, and contrary to us, our lord having taken them and nailed them to his cross [Col 2:14].

Nay, surely the ministration of Moses was holy, and without blame; but it was weak, through the flesh, Rom 8:3, and therefore God would lay that aside, so far as it was weak, and suited to the weakness of a fleshly people, and bring, instead thereof, a ministration of the law in the Spirit, which should be lively and powerful and effectual in the spirits of his people.

IP4:157 (1671): Query 5. Do not all men act according to the principle, whether of flesh or spirit, to which their minds are joined? Do not they which are of the flesh mind, savor, approve, desire after, and delight in that which is fleshly? But they that are after the Spirit, do they not mind, savor, desire after, approve, and delight in the things of the Spirit [Rom 8:5]? IP4:157 (1671): Query 6. What doth it produce to have the mind exercised by the flesh? Doth it not produce death? [Rom 8:6] Is not the nature, spirit, and wisdom of the flesh separated from God's nature, who is life? And can it bring forth any thing in the heart but corruption and death? But the minding of the other principle, and being exercised by the other principle, that produceth life and peace, doth it not? Let all that have inwardly experienced these things, assent and testifiy in spirit before the Lord to his praise.

MFU 38 (to Oliver Cromwell, 1653): I charge thee in the presence of the living God to beware how thou gives way to the men of the world, who live in the flesh, which cannot please God [Rom 8:8], to make laws over the consciences of the servants of the most high God [Dan 3:26], and that thou beware of hearkening to evil counsellors, which would make a prey upon the people for their own ends, and make a man an offender for a word [Isa 29:21], fore therein thou wilt bring guilt, plagues & woe upon thy own head, for the living God of life and power is made manifest, and is kingdom is come and his will is done [Mat 6:10].

IP3:482 (1671): But that is a great mistake, to suppose I did condemn any waiting or praying, that is according to a true illumination and leading of God's Spirit; for the true light and Spirit are not separated; but the exceptions I have against the prayers of professors is, that they are so much out of the true illumination, in a light of their own apprehending, forming, and conceiving. GFJN 17 ([1647]): For the ministry of Christ Jesus, and his teaching, bringeth into liberty and freedom; but the ministry that is of man, and by man [Gal 1:1], which stands in the will of man, bringeth into bondage, and under the shadow of death and darkness. Therefore none can be ministers of Christ Jesus but in the eternal spirit, which was before the scriptures were given forth; for if they have not his spirit, they are none of his [Rom 8:9]. Though they may have his light to condemn them that hate it [John 3:19f], yet they can never bring any into unity and fellowship in the spirit [Eph 4:3/Phil 2:1], except they be in it.... [continued under Jas 3:15]

JN1:288f (1654): Thou sayest, "none but the Pope and Quakers pretend a spirit of infallibility such as was in the apostles," whenas the Scripture saith that all the gifts of the saints are by one and the same Spirit [1 Cor 12:4], and by one Spirit were they all baptized [1 Cor 12:13]; and he that is joined to the Lord is one spirit [1 Cor 6:17]. And here I charge thee in the presence of the Lord to be a seducer, and antichrist, and led by a spirit of error [1 Jn 4:6], who hath not that infallible Spirit which was in the apostles; for whosoever hath not that Spirit is antichrist [Rom 8:9].

RBA 22 (1678, II.1): .... though there be not anything more plainly asserted, more seriously recommended, nor more certainly attested to, in all the writings of the holy Scriptures, yet nothing is less minded and more rejected by all sorts of Christians, than immediate and divine revelation ; insomuch that once to lay claim to it is a matter of reproach. Whereas of old none were ever judged Christians, but such as "had the Spirit of Christ (Rom 8:9). But now many do boldly call themselves Christians, who make no difficulty of confessing they are without it, and laugh at such as say they have it. [Continued under Rom 8:14]

HPS 383f (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): This is he whose ways and works are all perfect, and in him we are made complete; that is, as we are guided by his Spirit, which he gives to lead his saints into all truth, according to his promise, John 16:13f [quotes].... and this his Spirit by which people are led, is an infallible Spirit: Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ (which is infallible) he is none of his , saith the Apostle, Rom 8:9. And now if any man had, and profess to be led by this Spirit of Christ, he is made a scoff, even by the very professors of his age.

(Rom 8:11)

GF7:56 (1653): So, every one must witness Christ born in them, passing through death to him, through the world, through the law, through temptations, through the wilderness, and out of the world; and the son of God ye will witness to arise, who doth overcome, who was born of God. And the same spirit, that raised up Jesus Christ, the same spirit raiseth you up, and quickeneth your mortal bodies [Rom 8:11]; and he that hath not the same, is none of his [Rom 8:9].

JN3:588 (Martha Simmonds, 1656): Oh you noble hearts! It is you that are fit to entertain Christ in his reign, for in your obedience the precious springs of life doth open in you, and pure consolation you feel, songs of joy and triumph, and the Father, Son and Spirit meets in you; then hath the soul liberty from the devouring enemy. As the pure Spirit gets victory over the evil spirit, so the Spirit of Christ comes to reign in your mortal bodies [Rom 8:11], then comes the showers of grace as the morning dew, which bathes your souls in the blood of the Lamb, and waters the tender plant in you.

(Rom 8:12)

IP4:158 (1671): Query 11. To which are we debtors, who are redeemed to God by his Spirit and power? Are we debtors to the flesh [Rom 8:12], to live after the flesh, which brings into bondage to sin and death? Or are we debtors to that Spirit and power of life, which hath made us alive to God, and preservethy us in life, and quickeneth unto life, day by day?

GFJN 699 (to Charles II, 1674): The Spirit of Christ brings us to seek the peace and good of all men, and to live peaceably; and leads us from such evil works and actions as the magistrates' sword [Rom 13:4] takes hold upon. Our desire and labour is, that all who profess themselves Christians may walk in the Spirit of Christ; that they, through the Spirit, may mortify the deeds of the flesh [Rom 8:13], and by the sword of the Spirit [Eph 6:17] cut down sin and evil in themselves. Then the judges and other magistrates would not have so much work in punishing sin in the kingdom; neither then need kings or princes fear any of their subjects; if they all walked in the Spirit of Christ; for the fruits of the Spirit are love, righteousness, goodness, temperance, etc. [Gal 5:22f]

IP3:44 (1667): Query 31. What is it to have, or how come we to have, fellowship with Christ in his death [Phil 3:10], and to suffer and be crucified with him [Gal 2:20]? Is it by having our natural bodies crucified on the same cross of wood (or some such like one) as his body was crucified on, or by having the fleshly nature crucified, subdued, and worn out of our souls, minds, spirits, &c., by the power of the Spirit? Rom 8:13.

WPR 226, WPT 30 (1668): No man can be dead and justified before God, for so he may be justified that lives after the flesh; therefore they only can be justified that are alive; from whence this follows, if the living are justified and not the dead, and that none can live to God, but such as have mortified the deeds of the body through the Spirit [Rom 8:13], then none can be justified but they who have mortified the deeds of the body through the Spirit; so that justification does not go before, but is subsequential to the mortification of lusts, and sanctification of the soul through the Spirit's operation.

GF6:248f (1684): And the Lord poureth out of his spirit upon all flesh, both men and women [Joel 2:28], that with his spirit they might all know God and Christ, and the things of God [1 Cor 2:11], and to be led by the Spirit of God, that they may be his sons and daughters [Rom 8:14]....

GF8:229 (1682): And keep the unity and fellowship in the holy spirit of God, which is the bond of peace [Eph 4:3] amongst all God's children, that are led by his holy spirit [Rom 8:14], whose communion and fellowship is in the holy ghost [2 Cor 13:14/Phil 2:1], by which ye are led into all truth [John 16:13].

JN3:65 (1656): in vain do all worship, whose fear and service towards God is taught by the precepts of men [Isa 29:13]; for all the children of the Lord are taught of the Lord [Isa 54:13]. And they are the sons of God who are led by the Spirit of God [Rom 8:14]. And such hearken to the Lord and know his voice [John 10:4]; and what they see and hear, that they do [Phil 4:9], and do not offer the sacrifice of fools [Eccl 5:1].

IP1:316 (1660): That which is begotten by God is a son; and the son, as he is begotten by the breath of the spirit, so he is preserved and led by the same breath; and such as are so led, are sons, ande none else; for it is not reading of scriptures, and gathering rules out thence, that makes a son, but the receiving of the spirit, and the being led by the spirit. Rom 8:14-15.

RBA 22 (1678, II.1): [Continued from under Rom 8:9] Of old they were accounted "the sons of God, who were led by the Spirit of God" (Rom 8:14). But now many aver themselves sons of God, who know nothing of this leader; and he that affirms himself so led is, by the pretended orthodox of this age, presently proclaimed a heretic.

WPR 226, WPT 30 (1668): How clearly will it appear to any but a caviling and tenacious spirit, that man can be no farther justified, than as he becomes obedient to the Spirit's leadings; for if none can be a son of God, but he that's led by the Spirit of God [Rom 8:14], then none can be justified without being led by the Spirit of God, because none can be justified but he that is a son of God: so that the way to justification and sonship is through obedience to the Spirit's leadings, that is, manifesting the holy fruits thereof by an innocent life and conversation.

JWJM 208 (1754): Are we they whose minds are opened, influenced, and governed by the spirit of Christ and thereby made sons of God [Rom 8:14]? Is it not a fair conclusion that we, like our Heavenly Father, ought in our degree to be active in the same great cause—of the eternal happiness of at least our whole families, and more, if thereto capacitated?

DFR 10 (17–) : The apostolic doctrine of "Christ within," and of being "led by the Spirit of God [Rom 8:14]," was denied by the [Presbyterian] priest and many of the people, who appeared to have little sense of a divine Teacher in themselves, but asserted that revelation had now ceased, and no such thing was to be experienced in this day.

(Rom 8:15-17)

JWJM 208 (1754): If we, by the operation of the Spirit of Christ, become heirs with him in the kingdom of the Father [Rom 8:15-17], and are redeemed from the alluring counterfeit joys of this world, and the joy of Christ remain in us; to suppose that one remaining in this happy condition can, for the sake of earthly riches, not only deprive his fellow creatures of the sweetness of freedom (which, rightly used, is one of the greatest temporal blessings), but therewith neglect using proper means for their acquaintance with the Holy Scriptures and the advantage of true religion, seems, at least, a contradiction to reason.

GF3:362 (1659): And man's spirit in the fall is polluted, and his body; but as the light is believed in, and the mind changed, his spirit and body are sanctified [1 Th 5:23], and so he comes to be a child of the light [John 12:36], and "his spirit witnesseth with our spirits that we are the sons of God [Rom 8:16]."

RBA 37, RBAF 26f (1678, II.8): But if anyone should pertinaciously affirm that [phrases "And God said", "And the word of the Lord came", &c.] did import an outward audible voice to the carnal ear ; I would gladly know what other argument such a one could bring ..., saving his own simple conjecture. It is said indeed, "The Spirit witnesseth our spirit" (Rom 8:16); but not to our outward ears. And seeing the Spirit of God is within us, and not without us, it speaks to our spiritual, and not to our bodily ear.

And so he is never counted a wise man, that will put any confidence in that which will flee away from him; for those are the heirs of the earth and the world, that load themselves with thick clay [Hab 2:6], that they may set their nests on high [Hab 2:9]; but they that be heirs with Christ [Rom 8:17], and of the power of an endless life [Heb 7:16], trust in the living God [1 Tim 6:17], and come to possess an everlasting inheritance ... and there lay up riches that are everlasting, which will abide for ever [Mat 6:20].

JN2:454 (1655): it is the longsuffering of Christ that leads to repentance; and we know that none can be heirs of his glory but who suffer with him [Rom 8:17], neither can any suffer with him but by the sense of his sufferings which he suffered in his own person, who is the everlasting sacrifice; for of ourselves, without him in us, we can do nothing [John 15:5]; but as he is the doer and sufferer in us.

MFU 377 (1664): Your redemption and perfection hath been purchased at a dear rate; no corruptible perishing thing could purchase it; but the precious blood of Christ Jesus [1 Pet 1:18f], who hath given himself a ransom for you [1 Tim 2:6]: Let this precious redemption be precious unto you, and value not the sufferings of this present time with it; for they are not worthy to be compared to it [Rom 8:18].

For the fervent desire of the creature waiteth when the Son of God should be revealed [Rom 8:19G]. Now mark, doth any know this state of the Son of God, but by the revelation of God? If you say you do, you know it; by another spirit and way than the apostles did, which cannot be the true birth, but the birth born of the flesh, which will persecute him that is born of the spirit [Gal 4:29], which we have felt sufficiently of.

GF3:383 (1659): The work of the ministers of the gospel was not to reflect upon persons, or strike at creatures, ... but they struck at the power which captivated the creature, to the intent that the creature might come into the liberty of the sons of God [Rom 8:21]. And ... that which strikes at the power which captivates creatures, reacheth to the witness in prison [1 Jn 5:10/1 Pet 3:19], and brings people into unity with God and one another in the spirit, which is the bond of peace [Eph 4:3].

IP1:273 (1659): [The false spirit] hath his false liberty. There is a glorious liberty [Rom 8:21] in the gospel: there is a perfect freedom in the service of the life; there is a liberty in the power of the life over all the creatures. God made all things for man, and he denies him nothing; he being in subjection to him in the life, and using all in the dominion of the life. Now the devil paints a liberty like this; yea, a liberty that seems greater than this, even the liberty wherein the fleshly part [Gal 5:13] (whose very nature is eternally shut out of the nature of true liberty) hath scope.... which paint the true liberty takes off, slaying that which calls it liberty, and gathering ... from this false appearance, to that which is liberty indeed..... The perfection of the true liberty lies ... in the perfect binding down of that which is out of the life....

EQ 115 (James Nayler, 1658): The Lamb's War is not against the creation, for then should his weapons be carnal, as the weapons of the worldly spirits are [2 Cor 10:4], for we war not with flesh and blood, nor against the creation of God, that we love, but we fight against the spiritual powers of wickedness [Eph 6:12], which wars against God in the creation and captivates the creation into the lust which wars against the soul [1 Pet 2:11], and that the creature may be delivered into its liberty, prepared for the sons of God [Rom 8:21]. And this is not against love, nor everlasting peace, but that without which there can be no true love nor lasting peace.

These coaches running chief part of the night do often run over foot people in the dark. Postboys pursue their business, each one to his stage, all night through the winter... and at several places I have heard of their being froze to death. So great is the hurry in the spirit of this world [1 Cor 2:12] that in aiming to do business quick and to gain wealth the creation at this day doth loudly groan [Rom 8:22]!

IP1:87f (1658): There was a spirit, soul, or image of God brought forth, and standing in his life, before the fall. This soul was brought into death, under the burthen and bondage of corruption [Rom 8:21], out of its proper center and resting-place, by the fall. Now as there is in this state a true loss, so there is in this spirit a sensibleness, a groaning under the burden, a feeling the bitterness of the captivity, and panting after redemption and restoration to its former state [Rom 8:22f].... For the soul, by any imagination or notion or feeling of a center in the corrupt mind [1 Tim 6:5], cannot be healed or restored; but only by having the true life raised up again in it, and itself brought into its proper place and mansion in the fountain of life [Psa 36:9].

(Rom 8:23)

GF6:41 (1679): And the Jews, in the old covenant, brought all their first fruits, and offered them to the priests [Exo 23:19]; so there was a feast of the first fruits [Exo 23:16]. But in the New Testament and covenant of light and grace, they do offer the first fruits of the spirit [Rom 8:23], that which the spirit inspires them with, or reveals to them; which spirit hath ploughed up the fallow ground of their hearts [Hos 10:12], and so they sow to the spirit, and of the spirit reap life [Gal 6:8]....

JSS 46 (17–): [quotes Rom 8:23] It is sometimes long before the entire adoption, before the sonship is so thoroughly completed, as to allow the soul to speak boldly of the full redemption of the body; redemption of all that belongs to the man, every propensity, and every thought and motion.

GFJN 15 ([1647]): I discerned the groans of the spirit, which opened me, and made intercession to God: in which spirit is the true waiting upon God, for the redemption of the body, and of the whole creation. [Rom 8:26, 22f] By this true spirit, in which the true sighing is, I saw over the false sighings and groanings.

MFU 187 (1656): ....there is the true groans and sighs of the spirit which cannot be uttered [Rom 8:26], and there is false groans, & there is true mourning in Sion [Isa 61:3], & there is Esau weeping for his birthright [Gen 27:38], & there is true promise which the ransomed gives when he returns to Sion, with the song of deliverance upon his head [Isa 51:11/Psa32:7], & there is the false singing, & this I know eternally....

IP3:482 (1671): Prayer is a gift; and he that receiveth it, must first come to the sense of his own inability, and so wait to receive; and perhaps begin but with a groan or sigh from the true Spirit [Rom 8:26], and thus grown in ability from the same Spirit, denying the ability which is after the flesh: this latter abounds in many, who mistake and err in judgment, not waiting on the Lord, to be enabled by him rightly to judge and distinguish between flesh and spirit....

HPS 361 (Joan Vokins, 1691): ...in taking up the daily cross [Luk 9:23], I found power to preserve me from looking out [Eccl 12:3?] at my affliction of body, whcen sorely exercised in mind, ready to sink under the oppression of it; had not the Spirit of Truth, the Comforter [John 15:26], helped my infirmities, and taught me, I had never have known how to pray as I ought [Rom 8:26]....

SBD 103 (1750): ...the same spirit which assisted us in the ministry will likewise in prayer, without the help of which we can perform neither as we ought [Rom 8:26].

JWJM 102 (17–): Entering upon this visit appeared weighty, and before I left home my mind was often sad, under which exercise I felt at times that Holy Spirit which helps our infirmities [Rom 8:26], through which in private my prayers at times were put up to God...

(Rom 8:26f)

GF6:434f (1689): [quotes Rom 8:26f] Now here you may see the apostle doth not say it was outward forms ... that did help their infirmities, nor turn them to the prayer books to help their infirmities, or make intercession for them; but he plainly tells them the spirit did help their infirmities, and makes intercession for them according to the will of God, who knows the mind of the spirit; for the spirit which he pours upon them [Joel 2:28], people have always with them, but the book they may not always have with them, but the spirit they have always with them by sea and land, and night and day, to help their infirmities, and make intercession for them, if they do not err from it, and rebel against it.

RBA 333, RBAF 290 (1678, XI.22): ... this necessity of the Spirit's moving and concurrence appears abundantly from that of the apostle Paul [quotes Rom 8:26f].... Which first, holds forth the incapacity of men, as of themselves, to pray or call upon God in their own wills.... Secondly, it holds forth that which can only help and assist men to pray, to wit the Spirit, as that without which they cannot do it acceptably to God nor beneficially to their own souls. Thirdly, the manner and way of the Spirit's intercession, with "sighs and groans which are unutterable." And fourthly, that God receiveth graciously the prayers of such as are presented and offered unto himself by the Spirit, knowing it to be according to his will.

(Rom 8:27)

GF3:271 (1659): And that which searcheth the heart [Rom 8:27], is that which gave forth the scriptures, which led all the holy men of God to speak them forth [2 Pet 1:21], who is the Lord, the searcher of the hearts [Jer 17:10]. Which spirit owns all the words of the scriptures of truth [Dan 10:21] declared forth from the spirit; but the spirit was before the scripture was given forth.

IP3:513 (1676): Oh, the beauty and glory of the day of our God increaseth upon his heritage, blessed be the name of the Lord! And to what tend all the workings of the contrary spirit and power, but to eat out its own interest and kingdom, through the Lord's blessed ordering of things; so that all things work together for good [Rom 8:28], and for the advancing of truth, and the growth of it in the hearts of God's heritage.

HPS 306 (Susannah Blandford, 1700): All that would know the true God, in the heavenly still voice [1 Ki 19:12], and the Prophet, of which Moses and the Lord your God shall raise up, him shall you hear [Deut 18:15], and him do we hear, and have learned subjection to his will thereby, and well knowing, all things work together for good [Rom 8:28]: and have this to say to all true Christian Friends, be of good courage [Psa 27:14, many other places], fear not the reproach of men [Isa 51:7], there is nothing come to pass but what was for a trial for us, ... it is a cloud God suffereth to rise, and the wind shall blow away the chaff [Psa 1:4], but he will gather the wheat thereby [Mat 3:12] nearer together....

SBD 86 (1750): ... all things will work together for our good [Rom 8:28], because our standing is in the love and fear of God, and in it we labour by inspiration, as ambassadors of Christ [2 Cor 5:20], to make full proof of our ministry for the convincing of gainsayers [Tit 1:9], and to build up the believers in that most holy faith [Jude 1:20], the fruit whereof is righteousness and godly living. [see also under John 2:1-11]

JWJM 24f (17 ): Those who are so redeemed from the love of the world as to possess nothing in a selfish spirit, their "life is hid with Christ in God" [Col 3:3], and these he preserves in resignedness, even in times of commotion. As they possess nothing but what pertains to his family, anxious thoughts about wealth or dominion hath little or nothing in them to work upon, and they learn contentment in being disposed of according to his will who, being omnipotent and always mindful of his children, causeth all things to work for their good [Rom 8:28]. But where that spirit which loves riches works, and in its working gathers wealth and cleaves to customs which have thir root in self-pleasing, this spirit, thus separating from universal love, seeks help from that power which stands in the separation; and whatever name it hath, it still desires to defend the treasures thus given.

IP3:206 (1672): He saith, he fears a snake in this green grass, when I say, From his life, virtue, and power revealed in us, is our conformity to him. Ans. It were better and safer for him to fear at home; for the snake is in his own grass, and many notional, high, soaring expressions, without true knowledge. But can there be any conformity to Christ without his life, virtue, and power inwardly revealed? What else can conform uto, and bring forth in, the image and likeness of Christ [Rom 8:29]?

TEM 133 (1665?): There having been some time before this a very severe law made against the Quakers by name, and more particularly prohibiting our meetings under the sharpest penalties of five pounds for the first offence so called, ten pounds for the second, and banishment for the third... which law was looked upon to have been procured by the bishops in order to bring us to a conformity to their way of worship I wrote a few lines in the way of dialogue between a Bishop and an Quaker, which I called

CONFORMITY, PRESSED AND REPRESSED

B. What! You are one of them that do deny

     To yield obedience by conformity?

Q. Nay: we desire conformable to be.

B. But unto what? Q. The Image of the Son. [Rom 8:29]

B. What's that to us? We'll have conformity

Unto our form. Q. Then we shall ne'er have done.

For, if your fickle minds should alter, we

Should be to seek a new conformity.

Thus, who to-day conform to Prelacy

     To-morrow may conform to Popery.

But take this for an answer, Bishop, we

     Cannot conform either to them or thee;

For while to truth your forms are opposite,

Who'er conforms thereto doth not aright.

B. We'll make such knaves as you conform, or lie

Confined in prisons till ye rot and die.

Q. Well, gentle Bishop, I may live to see,

     For all thy threats, a check to cruelty;

And thee rewarded with thy envious crew

According as unto your work is due,

But in the meantime, I, for my defence,

Betake me to my fortress, Patience.

(Rom 8:30)

RBA 187, RBAF 143 (1678, VII.7): Secondly, in that excellent saying of the apostle, ... (Rom 8:30), "Whom he called, them he also justified, and whom he justified, them he also glorified": this is commonly called the "golden chain," as being acknowledged to comprehend the method and order of salvation. And therefore, if "justified" were not understood here in its proper signification, of being made just, sanctification would be excluded out of this chain. And truly it is very worthy of observation, that the apostle ... makes the word "justified" to comprehend all betwixt calling and glorifying; thereby clearly insinuating that the being really righteous is that only medium by which from our calling we pass to glorification.

Sin is out of the godly, but in the ungodly, who turn the grace of God into wantonness [Jude 1:4]; and what good doth his preaching do them, if they must never be without sin whilst they are upon earth, they can be but in their sin if [he] never preach to them.
