§137 (Mat 26:1-16 | Mar 14:1-11 | Luk 22:1-6)

Mat 26:1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,

Mat 26:2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover [G: is the Passover; T: shall be Easter], and the Son of man is betrayed [GT: shall be delivered] to be crucified.

Mat 26:3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace [G: into the hall] of the high priest, who was [GT: omit] called Caiaphas,      qtext

Mat 26:4 And consulted [G: consulted together; BT: held a council] that [T: how] they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.

Mat 26:5 But they said, Not on the feast [T: holy] day, lest there be an uproar [GT: any uproar be (T: arise)] among the people.

Mat 26:6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,      qtext

Mat 26:7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster [G: which had a] box of very precious [G: very costly; BT: precious] ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat [G: the table; BT: the board].

Mat 26:8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is [GT: What needed] this waste?

Mat 26:9 For this ointment might have been sold for much [BT: well sold], and given to the poor.

Mat 26:10 When Jesus understood it, he [G: And Jesus knowing it,] said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.      qtext

Mat 26:11 For ye have the poor [T: shall have poor folk] always with you; but me ye have not [GBT: shall ye not have] always.

Mat 26:12 For in that she hath poured [G: poured; B: hath cast; T: casted] this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial [GBT: to bury me (T: +withal)].

Mat 26:13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole [GT: throughout all the; B: in the] world, there shall also this, that this woman [GBT: she] hath done, be told [G: spoken of] for a memorial of her.

Mat 26:14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,      qtext

Mat 26:15 And said unto them [GT: omit], What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for [GBT: appointed unto him] thirty pieces of silver.      qtext

[Mat 26:15, cf Zech 11:12f]

Mat 26:16 And from that time [B: +forth] he sought opportunity to betray him.

Mar 14:1 After two days [G: And two days after] was [GT: followed] the feast of the passover, and of unleavened [T: Easter and the days of sweet] bread: and the chief [GBT: high] priests and the scribes sought [T: +means] how they might take him by craft, and put him to death.      qtext

Mar 14:2 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of [G: there be any tumult among; BT: any business arise among] the people.

Mar 14:3 And being in [GBT: when he was in] Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, [BT: +even] as he sat at meat [G: table], there came a woman having an alabaster [G: a] box of [B: +very precious] ointment of spikenard [BT: called nard (B:+pisrike)] very precious [G: very costly; B omits; T: very pure and costly]; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.      qtext

[Mar 14:3 cf John 12:3]

Mar 14:4 And there were [G: Therefore] some that had indignation within [G: disdained among; T: that were not content in] themselves, and said, Why was [G: To what end is; BT: what needed] this waste of the ointment made [GBT: ointment]?

Mar 14:5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have [GT omit] been given to the poor. And they murmured [BT: grudged] against her.

Mar 14:6 And [G: But] Jesus said, Let her alone [T: be in rest]; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought [BT: done] a good work on me.      qtext

Mar 14:7 For ye have the [B: have; T: shall have] poor with you always, and whensoever [G: when] ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not [GT: ye shall not have; B: have ye not] always.

Mar 14:8 She hath done what [GBT: hat] she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying [T: his burying ward].

Mar 14:9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of [BT: rehearsed] for a memorial [GBT: in remembrance] of her.

Mar 14:10 And [G: Then] Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief [GB T: high] priests, to betray him unto them.      qtext

Mar 14:11 And when they heard it [BT: that], they were glad, and promised to [GBT: that they would] give him money. And [G: therefore] he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

Luk 22:1 Now the feast of unleavened [BT: sweet] bread drew nigh [G: near], which is called the Passover [T: Easter] .

Luk 22:2 And the chief [GBT: high] priests and scribes sought how they might [T: to] kill him; for [T: but] they feared the people.      qtext

Luk 22:3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed [G: who was called; BT: whose surname was] Iscariot, being [G: and was; BT: which was] of the number of the twelve.

Luk 22:4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief [GBT: high] priests and captains [BT: officers], how he might betray him unto them.      qtext

Luk 22:5 And [G: So] they were glad, and covenanted [G: agreed; BT: promised] to give him money.

Luk 22:6 And he promised [GBT consented], and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude [GBT: when the people were away].

And some of them you [prison, some of them you beat and mock and scourge in your synagogues, and some of them you hale before magistrates [Mat 10:17f]. And the chief priests were ever the ringleaders to slay the righteous seed where it was born, wherein the Scriptures come to be fulfilled [margin: Mat 27:1,20; Mat 26:3f].

MFS 65 (1660): Also that woman that came unto Jesus with an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head as he sat at meat; it is manifest that this woman knew more ofr the secret power and wisdom of God, than his disciples did, who were filled with indignation against her. [Quotes Mar 14:6,9]

EQ 164 (Stephen Crisp, 1662): It was the care of the holy men of old, to keep in remembrance the words and works which sprang from the blessed power of God.... insomuch as one said, "The righteous should be had in everlasting remembrance" [Psa 112:6]; and another said, "The name of the righteous is precious" [Eccl 7:1?]; ...Christ said to her that anointed him with the box of ointment, wherever the Gospel should be preached, this charity and love of hers, bestowed on him, should be spoken of [Mat 26:6-13 | Mar 14:3-9].

And did not the priests give money to Judas to betray Christ [Mat 26:14-16 ||]? And did not the priests give large money to the soldiers to tell a lie, and say his disciples stole him away in the night [Mat 28:12f]? Had not Paul authority from the high priest to persecute? Acts 9:1f. And so you get your authority from the magistrates, and the people get their authority from you to persecute.

(Mat 26:26-29 | Mar 14:22-25 | Luk 22:16-20)

HPS 367 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): [quotes Mat 26:26-28] ... this figuratively pointed to the true bread [John 6:32], I think, very clearly; so likewise, that the :; so in the very next verse, saith Christ, "I will not drink of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's Kingdom." [Mat 26:29] And that he did not mean, they should stay for this wine, until they came to heaven ... [quotes Mat 16:28, Luk 17:20f] "for behold the Kingdom of God is within you." And that this wine was drunk by the disciples, see Acts 2:1-18. When the Holy Ghost fell upon the apostles, how full of the new wine of the Kingdom they were, to the astonishment of beholders! And certainly this wine of the Spirit, or wine of the Kingdom ... must come from him; for he is the true vine ... [John 15:1] So that the text alleged, doth not at all prove outward & elementary bread and wine to be of use after Christ's second and spiritual coming; for this he fulfilled before his death, and the holy ghost was not given until after he was glorified, as you may read, John 7:39.

JN1:20 (1653; =JN1:222): Concerning the Lord's Supper. The true supper of the Lord is the spiritual eating and drinking of the flesh and blood of Christ spiritually [mar: Mat 26:26,28]; which the spiritual man onlhy eatheth and is thereby nourished up into eternal life, without which eating there can be no life in the creature [mar: John 6:51,53-56], profess what you will. And all who eat of this bread and drink of this cup have real communion in Christ the head and also one with another as members and are of one heart and one mind, a complete body in Christ [mar: 1 Cor 11:24f; Col 2:10]. Now the world, who take only the outward signs are not brought in "discerning of the Lord's body, eat and drink damnation to themselves" and become "guiilty of the body and blood of Christ" [mar: 1 Cor 11:27-29]; and calls this a communion but lives in envy, strive, and debate, fighting [1 Tim 6:4f] and going to law one with another [1 Cor 6:7], for earthly things.

RBA 385, 391 (1678, XIII.5,6): [Barclay discusses Mat 26:26-28 || in connection with transsubstantion and the true meaning of communion.]

(Mat 26:28 | Mar 14:24| Luk 22:20)

GFJN 23 (16–): Soon after there was another great meeting of professors, and a captain named Amor Stoddard came in. They were discoursing of the blood of Christ. And as they were discoursing of it, I saw through the immediate opening of the invisible spirit, the blood of Christ; and I cried out among them, saying, ‘Do ye not see the blood of Christ? See it in your hearts, to sprinkle your hearts and consciences from dead works, to serve the living God [Heb 10:22/9:14]; For I saw it, the blood of the new covenant [Mat 26:28 ||], how it came into the heart. This startled the professors, who would have the blood only without them, and not in them. But captain Stoddard was reached, and said, ‘Let the youth speak, hear the youth speak;’ when he saw they endeavoured to bear me down with many words.

MFU 168 (1655): The apostle was baptized into Christ & baptized into his death [Rom 6:3]. And the apostle had received of the Lord the cup of the new testament [Mat 26:28 ||, 1 Cor 11:25] & he drunk of it & gave it unto the Church, and he meant as he spoke: and the cup that they drunk of was new [Mat 26:29 ||], and they drunk all into one spirit, & they were all baptized by one spirit into one body [1 Cor 12:13], and this is out of all your imitations, & imaginations; who are under the power of darkness shall never know the meaning of this.

HPS 140 (Dorothy White, 1662): O little love, overcome, overcome all your hearts, that Life may fill your vessels, that the bowels of tenderness and compassion may flow one into another, that every soul may swim in the fulness of love, that all may be filled with the eternal Power, that the new wine of the Kingdom [Mat 26:29] may be poured from vessel, that all your cups may overflow with the consolation of God [Psa 23:5/Jer 16:7].

George Fox, Cambridge Journal I:253f (quoted DGA 167): will you come no nearer to Christ's death than to take bread and wine in remembrance of his death [Luk 22:19f, 1 Cor 11:24-26]? For after you have eaten in remembrance of his death, then you must come into his death and die with him if you will live with him as the apostles did....

GF6:288 (1685; =GF6:364): "Behold," saith Christ, "the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table" [Luk 22:21]. So it seems there, that Judas did eat of the bread, and drink of the fruit of the vine in the cup [Mat 26:29 ||], and he did partake of these outward elements the same night that Christ was betrayed, which elements were taken in a show and remembrance of the Lord's death till he came [1 Cor 11:24-26]; but Judas did not stay till he came, but he betrayed him.

JSS 39 (17–): If thy heart is won to Jesus in good earnest, and thou art engaged to follow him, wherever he leads thee [Rev 14:4]; through fire and water, through persecution, temptation, ridicule, and contempt; if thou art bent to ... stand by him through all his perils, in his fast, agony, and death on the cross, hold on thy way [Job 17:9], he'll be with thee, and will not forsake thee. Remember for thy encouragement what he said to his disciples, "Ye have continued with me in my temptations, and I appoint unto you a kingdom [Luk 22:28f]." This will hold good to all his upright followers for ever.

GF5:31 (1674): [Quotes Luk 22:35] So here you may see, though Christ sent forth his ministers without bag or scrip, silver or gold, and commanded them to give freely, as they had received freely of him [Mat 10:8], yet they wanted for nothing: therefore, consider all you that call yourselves ministers, that say, ye have not heard the voice of Christ, are not you always in want, though you have bag and scrip, silver and gold? and will you go to any place, except there be a great parsonage, or some augmentation; therefore, measure yourselves with such as Christ sent forth, and see unlike you are unto them?

EQ 548 (John Crook, 1686): Come, let us reason together [Isa 1:18]: Wanted you anything [Luk 22:35] while you kept your integrity? Did you not witness one day in God's presence better than all the delights that ever you have since your minds by looseness and vanities have been estranged from him? Did your pleasure and companions in folly ever afford you that comfort and inward companions and peace, which sometimes you have felt among God's people?

SIW 164 (Ann Crowley, 181-): I had found him to be strength in weakness [2 Cor 12:9]; so that I could say with the disciples of old, when queried of by their Divine Master, "When I sent you out without purse or scrip, lacked ye anything? they answered, Nothing, Lord!" [Luk 22:35]

(Luk 22:36-38)

GFJN 399 (Declaration to Charles II, 1660/61): And whereas it is objected: "But although you now say that you cannot fight nor take up arms at all, yet if the spirit do move you, then you will change your principle, and then you will sell your coat and buy a sword [Luk 22:36] and fight for the kingdom of Christ." Answer: ...Christ said to Peter, "Put up thy sword in his place [Mat 26:52]"; though he had said before, he that had no sword might sell his coat and buy one (to the fulfilling of the law and Scripture [Isa 53:12. Quotes rest of Mat 26:52f]. And this might satisfy Peter, after he had put up his sword, when he said to him that he who took it, should perish by it [Mat 26:52], which satisfieth us. [Quotes Rev 13:10] And so Christ's kingdom is not of this world, therefore do not his servants fight, as he told Pilate [John 18:36], the magistrate who crucified him. And did they not look upon Christ as a raiser of sedition? And did he not say, "Forgive them" [Luk 23:34]? But thus it is that we are numbered amongst transgressors and numbered amongst fighters, that the Scriptures might be fulfilled [Luk 23:37, Isa 53:12].

(Mat 26:38-41 | Mar 14:34-38 | Luk 22:41-46)

WPR 147 (1677): Watch unto prayer, that you enter not into temptation [1 Pet 4:7/Mat 26:41]. Christ said unto Peter, "Canst not thou watch one hour?" [Mat 26:40] Every one hath an hour of temptation to go through; and this is the hour that every one is to watch. Jesus, the captain of our salvation [Heb 2:10], was sad unto death [Mat 26:38 | Mar 14:34]; he did sweat drops of blood [Luk 22:44]; but he watched, he prayed, he groaned; yea, he cried with strong cries. But through suffering overcame.

(Mat 26:39 | Mar 14:36 | Luk 22:42)

GF7:102 (1655): Stand in the will of God, with thy own will offered up, as his was who said, "Not my will, but thine be done [Mat 26:39 | Mar 14:36 | Luke 22:42]." And beware of striving in thy own will against the eternal providence and power, which is now working invisibly, cross and contrary to all the powers of darkness. And wait in the fear of the Lord, that thy duty to the Lord thou mayst know, whose everlasting love is to thee; whose blessing reacheth unto thee, if thou be faithful with faithful Abraham, who received the blessing [Gal 3:9], and to his seed after him.

JN2:213 (1655): Thus is God prized and praised in his own will, a sacrifice forever accepted; therefore Christ must not be offered up in his own will, but in the will of the Father [Mat 26:39 ||]. And in that will he had power to lay down his life, and again to take it up [John 10:17]; thus he is become our example, whom we delight, in the same will, to follow....

IP3:435 (1670): The Lord preserve us near unto himself, out of that which separates and weakens; nothing shall be able to interrupt our joy in the Lord, nor our delight and pleasure in his will. Lo! I come, saith the child, do do thy will, O God! [Psa 40:7f, Heb 10:7] to drink the cup thou hast prepared [Mat 20:23]; although there is a nature which cannot but say, If it be possible, let it pass away [Mat 26:39 ||]; but that nature is bowed down and subjected under its proper yoke, and, in submission, is kept out of sinning against the Lord, and is accepted by him who bows it, and makes it willing to follow the Lamb in the day of his power [Psa 110:3/Rev 14:4].

HPS 355 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): I affirm they own his obedience also; for I know they do believe, that Christ Jesus in the days if his flesh [Heb 5:7] was obedient to God, as becometh a son unto a father in all things: For he came not to do his own will, but the will of him that sent him [John 6:38]; wherefore we find him praying to his Father, Not my Will, but thine be done [Mat 26:39 ||]. [Quotes Heb 5:8, Isa 53:3,5]

JSS 35 (17–): And though he never sinned, yet "he died unto sin, once" [Rom 6:10] that is, unto the motions, which, if obeyed, had brought forth sin; for he had a will as a man; as a man his nature was reluctant to the cross. "If it be possible, let this cup pass from me;" but he abode in subjection, "not my will, but thine be done [Mat 26: 39 | Mar 14: 36 | Luk 22:42]."

GF4:283 (1661): the flesh is weak, but the spirit is ready [Mat 26:41 | Mar 14:38]; and in that which is weak lieth the infirmity, and men know not what they ought to pray for [Rom 8:26], but the spirit which gives them the understanding [Job 32:8], in which they are to pray, which makes the intercession to god, in which people must pray always; all supplication must be in the spirit [Eph 6:18]....

GF7:56 (1653): Now to all you who are convinced, and have your understandings enlightened, and the worship of the world doth appear to you to be contrary to the worship of God and Christ in spirit, and all the prophets and apostles, who worshipped the living God in newness of life [Rom 6:4], in the second birth, beware ye enter not into the temptation, to lust after the creature, and give not way to the lazy, dreaming mind, for it enters into the temptations [Mat 26:41 ||]. So there thou wilt be polluted with the pollutions of the world [2 Pet 2:20]; then thou wilt be tempted to despair, and the devil there gets power upon thee, if thou enter into temptations, and follow thy imaginations in going from the light of Christ within thee.

WDS 301 (1668): watch and pray [Mat 26:41 ||], that you may be guided in the power of his Spirit in all your ways; and be careful that not any be hasty to utter words before the Lord [Eccl 5:2], neither suffer any sighs or groans, or anything to be heard to pass through you, but that as you have the seal of the Spirit of the Lord [Eph 4:30].... so that all flesh may be truly silent before the Lord [Zech 2:13]....

IP2:443 (1666): Yea, if a man came so far as to witness dominion and victory over his soul's enemies, the evil seed brought into death in him, and a possession and inheritance in the pure rest of life; yet if that part be not kept in the death, if there be not a praying and watching [Mat 26:41] to the preserver of Israel (in the pure fear [Psa 19:9 LXX] and humility), the enemy will be sowing to the flesh [Gal 6:8] again; he will be getting some of his corrupt seeds into the heart again (if the soul do but sleep and become negligent), and so corruption will take root again, and the contrary birth grow up again, and the foxes break into the vineyard, and spoil the tender grapes [Song 2:15].

IP3:516 (1676): There is a state where the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak [Mat 26:41]; yet it is not so where the spirit is become strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might [Eph 6:10].... The flesh will be rebelling against the Spirit, until it be destroyed by the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. But when a man is really Crucified with Christ (Gal 2:20), and dead to sin [Rom 6:11], sin hath no more power over him [Rom 6:14]; for Christ lives in him and reigns in his heart over sin and the temptations thereof.

RBA 333 (1678, XI.22): ... that there is a necessity of this inward retirement of the mind, as previous to prayer, that the Spirit may be felt to draw thereunto, appears, for that in most of those places where prayer is commanded, watching is prefixed thereunto as necessary to go before [cites Mat 24:42, Mar 13:33, 14:38, Luk 21:36].... Now to what end is this watching, or what is it but a waiting to feel God's Spirit to draw unto prayer, so that it may be done acceptably?

WTG 82 (Susanna Morris, 1748): ...I had as much need to watch and pray [Mat 26:41] that I might neither go too fast nor be too backward in doing our great Master’s will in all things...

(Mat 26:45 | Mar 14:41)

MFU 263 (1659): And dear heart, beware of the betrayer which lies near thee, the same Judas as ever was which betrays the Just one into the hand of sinners [Mat 26:45/Acts 7:52]. In the fear of the Lord God stand & wait lest thou run before thy guide [Gen 10:9].

(Luk 22:44)

HPS 178 (Katharine Evans & Sarah Chevers, prisoners of the Inquisition, 1662): They said, it was impossible we could live long in that hot room. So the next week-day they sat in council; but oh how the swelling sea did rage [Jer 5:22], and the proud waves [Job 38:11] did foam [Jude 1:13] unto the clouds of heaven, and proclamation was made at the prison-gate, we did not know the words, but the fire of the Lord flamed against it, my life was smitten [Psa 143:3], and I was in a very great agony, so that sweat was as drops of blood [Luk 22:44], and the righteous one was laid into a sepucher, and a great stone was rolled to the door [Mat 27:60]; but the prophecy was, that he should arise again the third day [Hos 6:2], which was fulfilled.

§141 (Mat 26:47-56 | Mar 14:43-52 | Luk 22:47-53)

Mat 26:47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief [G: high] priests and elders of the people.

Mat 26:48 Now he that betrayed him gave [GT: had given] them a sign [GBT: token], saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast [GT: lay hold (T: hands) on him]. qtext

Mat 26:49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail [G: God save thee], master; and kissed him.

Mat 26:50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.

Mat 26:51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.

Mat 26:52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again [GBT: omit] thy sword into his place [BT: sheath]: for all they [GT: omit] that take [T: lay hand on] the sword shall perish with the sword. qtext

Mat 26:53 ]GT: +Either] Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently [GBT: omit] give me more than twelve legions of angels? qtext

Mat 26:54 But how then shall [GT: should] the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be [G: which say that it must be so; BT: For thus (T: so) it must be]?

Mat 26:55 In that same hour [G: The same hour; T: The same time] said Jesus to the multitudes [GT: multitude], Are ye [GBT: Ye be] come out as [GBT: +it were] against [BT: unto] a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple [GT: teaching in the temple among you], and ye laid no hold on me [GBT: took me not].

Mat 26:56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

Mar 14:43 And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh [GT: came] Judas, [G: +that was; B: +which was] one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude [ BT: number of people] with swords and staves, from the chief [GBT: high] priests and the scribes and the [GBT: scribes and] elders.

Mar 14:44 And he that betrayed him had given them a [BT: +general] token, saying, Whomsoever I shall [BG do] kiss, that same is he [GT: he it is] ; take him, and lead him away safely [BT: warely]. qtext

Mar 14:45 And as soon as he was come, he goeth [GT: went] straightway to him, and saith [GT: said], Master, [G: Hail] master; and kissed him.

Mar 14:46 And [G: Then] they laid their hands on him, and took him.

Mar 14:47 And one of them that stood by drew [GBT: +out] a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

Mar 14:48 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Are ye [GBT: Ye be] come out, as against a thief, with swords and with staves [BT: +for] to take me?

Mar 14:49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching [G: teaching in the temple], and ye took me not: but [G: +this is done that; B: these things come to pass, that; T: that] the scriptures must [GBT: should] be fulfilled.

Mar 14:50 And [G: Then] they all forsook him, and fled [BT: ran away].

Mar 14:51 And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body [GBT: clothed in line upon his bare body (BT: the bare)]; and the young men laid hold on [GBT: caught] him:

Mar 14:52 And [G: But] he left the [GBT: his] linen cloth [B: garment;T omits], and fled from them naked.

Luk 22:47 And while he yet spake, behold [BT: +there came] a multitude [GBT: company], and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near [G: came near; BT: pressed nigh] unto Jesus to kiss him.

Luk 22:48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? qtext

Luk 22:49 [G: +Now] When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the [GBT omit] sword?

Luk 22:50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest [T: +of all], and cut [GB: struck; T: smote] off his right ear.

Luk 22:51 And [G: Then; B omits] Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye [G: them] thus far [BT: +forth]. And [B: +when] he touched his ear, and [B: he] healed him.

Luk 22:52 Then Jesus said unto the chief [GBT: high] priests, and captains [BT: rulers] of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against [GBT: unto] a thief, with swords and staves?

Luk 22:53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no [GT: not forth] hands against me: but this is your [G: your very; BT: even your very] hour, and the power of darkness. qtext

GF3:578 (1659): Thou speakest of salutations, and saluting enemies; how do you salute thouse that you imprison till death for your tithes? What a salutation is that? and cause them to be whipped and imprisoned for speaking to you! this is like Judas' salutation to Christ when he betrayed him [Mat 26:48f | Mar 14:44f], and not the salutation of the saints.

WPR 160 (1682): Thus it is, that with Judas they call him Master, but take part with the evil of the world to betray him; and kiss and embrace him, as far as a specious profession goes [Mat 26:48f ||]; and then sell him to gratify the passion that they most indulge. Thus as God said of old, they make him serve with their sins [Isa 43:24].

GF2:345 (1689): And Christ bids Peter "put up his sword"; they that draw the sword concerning him, to defend him and his worship and faith, should perish with the sword [Mat 26:52]. Peter and the apostles never drew the outward sword after, but said their weapons were spiritual not carnal [2 Cor 10:4], and they did not wrestle with flesh and blood [Eph 6:12].

WPR 242 (1669): Be therefore advised in the words of that meek Example Jesus Christ, Call not for fire any more [Luk 9:54f], let the tares grow with the wheat [Mat 13:30], neither employ that sword any more, which was commanded to be sheathed so many hundred years ago [Mat 26:52] ..., and rather choose by fair and moderate debates (not penalties ratified by imperial decrees) to determine religious differences; so will you at least obtain tranquility which may be called a civil unity.

And one of the worst of them would have taken me by the hand but I would not give my hand but said to him "How now Judas, hast thou betrayed me and dost thou now come with a kiss [Luk 22:48]?" §142A-G, L-O (Mat 26:57-68 | Mar 14:53-65 | Luk 22:54-55, 63-71)

Mat 26:57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away [GBT: took Jesus, and led him]to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

Mat 26:58 But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace [G: hall], and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.

Mat 26:59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the [G: +whole] council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;

Mat 26:60 But found none: yea, though [G: and though; B: yea, when; T: insomuch that] many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,

Mat 26:62 And the high [GBT: chief] priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which [G: What is the matter that; B: Why do; T: How is it that] these [G: +men; BT: +bear] witness against thee? qtext

Mat 26:63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high [GBT: chief] priest answered and said unto him, I adjure [GBT: charge] thee by [G: swear unto us by; T: in the name of] the living God, that thou [G: to] tell us whether [G: if] thou be the [G: that; BT omit] Christ, the Son of God [G: +or no].

Mat 26:64 Jesus saith [GT: said] unto him, Thou hast said [G: +it]: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power [G: the power of God], and coming [GT: come] in the clouds of heaven [G: the heaven; BT: the sky]. qtext

Mat 26:65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy [GT: blasphemed]; what further need have we of [G: have we any more need of; BT: need we of any more] witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.

Mat 26:66 What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death [BT: worthy to die].

Mat 26:67 Then did they spit [GT: spat they] in his face, and buffeted him [BT: +with fists]; and others smote him with the palms of their hands [G: with rods; BT: +on his face], qtext

Mat 26:68 Saying, Prophesy unto [T: Tell] us, thou [GB: O] Christ, Who is he that smote thee?

Mar 14:53 And [G: So] they led Jesus away to the high [BT: highest] priest [T: +of all]: and with him were assembled [GBT: to him came (G: +together)] all the chief [GBT: high] priests and the elders and the scribes.

Mar 14:54 And Peter followed him afar [BT: a great way] off, even [B: +till he was come] into the palace [G: hall] of the high priest: and he [GT omit] sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.

Mar 14:55 And the chief [GBT: high] priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.

Mar 14:58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is [GT omit] made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. qtext

[Mar 14:58, cf Acts 7:48]

Mar 14:59 But neither so did their witness agree [GBT: their witness yet (T omits) agreed not] together.

Mar 14:60 And the high priest stood up in the midst [GBT: amongst them], and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these [GBT: What is the matter (BT: How is it) that these bear] witness against thee? qtext

Mar 14:61 But [T: And] he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high [BT: highest] priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the [G: that; BT omit] Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

Mar 14:62 And Jesus said, I am [G: +he]]: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on [GT: sit at (T: on)] the right hand of power [G: the power of God], and coming [GT: come] in the clouds of heaven. qtext

Mar 14:63 Then the high [T: highest] priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further [G: have we any more need of] witnesses?

Mar 14:64 Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty [GBT: worthy] of death.

Mar 14:65 And some began to spit on [GBT: at] him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him [GBT: beat him with fists], and to say unto him, Prophesy [GBT: Arede unto us]: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands [G: smote him with their rods; B: did beat him with rods; T: buffeted him on the face]. qtext

Luk 22:54 Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.

Luk 22:55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall [T: palace], and were set down together, Peter [GBT: +also] sat down among them.

Luk 22:63 And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote [G: struck] him. qtext

Luk 22:64 And when they had [T omits] blindfolded him, they struck him on the [G: they smote him on the; T: and smote his] face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy [BT: Arede (=Prophesy)], who is it [GT: it is] that smote thee?

Luk 22:65 And many other things blasphemously spake [T: despitefully said] they against him.

Luk 22:66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief [GBT: high] priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,

Luk 22:67 Art thou the [G: that; BT: very] Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe [G: +it]: qtext

Luk 22:68 And if I also [GT: also I; B: I] ask you, ye [GB : you] will not answer me, nor let me go.

Luk 22:69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. qtext

Luk 22:70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them [B: He said], Ye say that I am.

Luk 22:56 But a certain maid [B: But when a certain wench; T: And one of the wenches] beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon [G: having well looked on; T: set good eyesight on] him, and [G omits; B: she] said, This man [B: same fellow; T: same] was also with him. qtext

Luk 22:57 And [G: But; T: Then] he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.

Luk 22:58 And after a little while another [G: +man] saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And [G: But] Peter said, Man, I am not.

Luk 22:59 And about the space of one hour after another [G: a certain other] confidently [GBT omit] affirmed, saying, Of a truth [GBT: Verily] this fellow also [GT: even this man (T: fellow)] was with him: for he is a Galilaean [G: also a Galilean; BT: of Galilee].

Luk 22:60 And Peter said, Man, I know [BT: wot] not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.

GF6: 441f (169-?): And another scripture satan's ministers bring [against perfectability], of Peter's saying to Christ, "though I should die with thee, yet I would not deny thee [Mat 26:35];" and after Peter was examined, he cursed and swore, and said he did not know the man, namely Christ [Mat 26:69-75]. But in the 75th verse, you may see Peter repented of what he had said, and wept bitterly. And Christ said unto Peter, "When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren [Luk 22:32]." So it seems that Peter was not wholly converted when he denied Christ.

JN1:505 (1654): And you say Peter when he denied his Master was in a justified estate: which if he was, why did he weep bitterly and repent [Mat 26:69-75 ||]: but thus you blind lead the blind into the ditch [Mat 15:14], who say that one denying Christ is in a state of justification. But by whom is he justified, who denies Christ?
