Mat 26:1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,

JN1:87f (1653): he that was a minister of God did exhort to receive strangers; by that means some received angels [Heb 13:2].... And some of them you [prison, some of them you beat and mock and scourge in your synagogues, and some of them you hale before magistrates [Mat 10:17f]. And the chief priests were ever the ringleaders to slay the righteous seed where it was born, wherein the Scriptures come to be fulfilled [margin: Mat 27:1,20; Mat 26:3f].

MFS 65 (1660): Also that woman that came unto Jesus with an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head as he sat at meat; it is manifest that this woman knew more ofr the secret power and wisdom of God, than his disciples did, who were filled with indignation against her. EQ 164 (Stephen Crisp, 1662): It was the care of the holy men of old, to keep in remembrance the words and works which sprang from the blessed power of God.... insomuch as one said, "The righteous should be had in everlasting remembrance" [Psa 112:6]; and another said, "The name of the righteous is precious" [Eccl 7:1?]; ...Christ said to her that anointed him with the box of ointment, wherever the Gospel should be preached, this charity and love of hers, bestowed on him, should be spoken of [Mat 26:6-13 | Mar 14:3-9].

GF3: 538 (1659): See how the priests were always busy for blood, that all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, might come upon them. Mat 23:35. And did not the priests give money to Judas to betray Christ [Mat 26:14-16 ||]? And did not the priests give large money to the soldiers to tell a lie, and say his disciples stole him away in the night [Mat 28:12f]? Had not Paul authority from the high priest to persecute? Acts 9:1f. And so you get your authority from the magistrates, and the people get their authority from you to persecute.

Concerning the Papists making the flesh and blood of Christ of bread and wine; and the apostle saith, they knew Christ no more after the flesh [2 Cor 5:16]; and how the formal Christians take the bread and wine kneeling, in remembrance of Christ's death, and his disciples took it sitting..... Now when the evening was come, Christ sat down with his twelve disciples [Mat 26:20]. So he doth not say they kneeled or bowed, but they sat down, when the eat the last supper with Christ.

HPS 367 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): [quotes Mat 26:26-28] ... this figuratively pointed to the true bread [John 6:32], I think, very clearly; so likewise, that the :; so in the very next verse, saith Christ, "I will not drink of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's Kingdom." [Mat 26:29] And that he did not mean, they should stay for this wine, until they came to heaven ... [quotes Mat 16:28, Luk 17:20f] "for behold the Kingdom of God is within you." And that this wine was drunk by the disciples, see Acts 2:1-18. When the Holy Ghost fell upon the apostles, how full of the new wine of the Kingdom they were, to the astonishment of beholders! And certainly this wine of the Spirit, or wine of the Kingdom ... must come from him; for he is the true vine ... [John 15:1] So that the text alleged, doth not at all prove outward & elementary bread and wine to be of use after Christ's second and spiritual coming; for this he fulfilled before his death, and the holy ghost was not given until after he was glorified, as you may read, John 7:39.

JN1:20 (1653; =JN1:222): Concerning the Lord's Supper. The true supper of the Lord is the spiritual eating and drinking of the flesh and blood of Christ spiritually [mar: Mat 26:26,28]; which the spiritual man onlhy eatheth and is thereby nourished up into eternal life, without which eating there can be no life in the creature [mar: John 6:51,53-56], profess what you will. And all who eat of this bread and drink of this cup have real communion in Christ the head and also one with another as members and are of one heart and one mind, a complete body in Christ [mar: 1 Cor 11:24f; Col 2:10]. Now the world, who take only the outward signs are not brought in "discerning of the Lord's body, eat and drink damnation to themselves" and become "guiilty of the body and blood of Christ" [mar: 1 Cor 11:27-29]; and calls this a communion but lives in envy, strive, and debate, fighting [1 Tim 6:4f] and going to law one with another [1 Cor 6:7], for earthly things.

GFJN 23 (16–): Soon after there was another great meeting of professors, and a captain named Amor Stoddard came in. They were discoursing of the blood of Christ. And as they were discoursing of it, I saw through the immediate opening of the invisible spirit, the blood of Christ; and I cried out among them, saying, ‘Do ye not see the blood of Christ? See it in your hearts, to sprinkle your hearts and consciences from dead works, to serve the living God [Heb 10:22/9:14]; For I saw it, the blood of the new covenant [Mat 26:28 ||], how it came into the heart. This startled the professors, who would have the blood only without them, and not in them. But captain Stoddard was reached, and said, ‘Let the youth speak, hear the youth speak;’ when he saw they endeavoured to bear me down with many words.

MFU 168 (1655): The apostle was baptized into Christ & baptized into his death [Rom 6:3]. And the apostle had received of the Lord the cup of the new testament [Mat 26:28 ||, 1 Cor 11:25] & he drunk of it & gave it unto the Church, and he meant as he spoke: and the cup that they drunk of was new [Mat 26:29 ||], and they drunk all into one spirit, & they were all baptized by one spirit into one body [1 Cor 12:13], and this is out of all your imitations, & imaginations; who are under the power of darkness shall never know the meaning of this.

George Fox, Cambridge Journal I:253f (quoted DGA 167): will you come no nearer to Christ's death than to take bread and wine in remembrance of his death [Luk 22:19f, 1 Cor 11:24-26]? For after you have eaten in remembrance of his death, then you must come into his death and die with him if you will live with him as the apostles did....

GF6:288 (1685; =GF6:364): "Behold," saith Christ, "the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table" [Luk 22:21]. So it seems there, that Judas did eat of the bread, and drink of the fruit of the vine in the cup [Mat 26:29 ||], and he did partake of these outward elements the same night that Christ was betrayed, which elements were taken in a show and remembrance of the Lord's death till he came [1 Cor 11:24-26]; but Judas did not stay till he came, but he betrayed him.

JSS 39 (17–): If thy heart is won to Jesus in good earnest, and thou art engaged to follow him, wherever he leads thee [Rev 14:4]; through fire and water, through persecution, temptation, ridicule, and contempt; if thou art bent to ... stand by him through all his perils, in his fast, agony, and death on the cross, hold on thy way [Job 17:9], he'll be with thee, and will not forsake thee. Remember for thy encouragement what he said to his disciples, "Ye have continued with me in my temptations, and I appoint unto you a kingdom [Luk 22:28f]." This will hold good to all his upright followers for ever.

GF2:345 (1689): And Christ bids Peter "put up his sword"; they that draw the sword concerning him, to defend him and his worship and faith, should perish with the sword [Mat 26:52]. Peter and the apostles never drew the outward sword after, but said their weapons were spiritual not carnal [2 Cor 10:4], and they did not wrestle with flesh and blood [Eph 6:12].

WPR 242 (1669): Be therefore advised in the words of that meek Example Jesus Christ, Call not for fire any more [Luk 9:54f], let the tares grow with the wheat [Mat 13:30], neither employ that sword any more, which was commanded to be sheathed so many hundred years ago [Mat 26:52] ..., and rather choose by fair and moderate debates (not penalties ratified by imperial decrees) to determine religious differences; so will you at least obtain tranquility which may be called a civil unity.

IP1:211 (1659): [Exceptions against Christ:] His silence at the testimonies brought against him, and to the high-priest when he questioned him [Mat 26:62f ||, Mat 27:12]. Indeed either the speaking or the silence in the life, is offensive to the carnal professor, who knoweth not the law of life in this particular; but can either speak or be silent, according to his own will. This is the difference between the true and the false Christian; the false Christian's knowledge and religion stand in his own will, in his own understanding; he speaks in his own time; both which are crucified in him that is born of the Spirit.
