WPR 569 (WPT 345, 1694): In this time the Law was written on stone [2 Cor 3:3], the temple built with hands [Heb 9:11], attended with an outward priest-hood and external rites and ceremonies [Heb 9:1,6], that were shadows of the good things that were to come [Heb 10:1], and were only to serve till the Seed came, or the more excellent and general manifestation of Christ....

GF6:58 (1679): And in the old covenant and testament they had an outward ark, and in it they had the pot of manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, [Heb 9:4], and outward altars; and in the ark they put the testament. RBA 356 (1678, XII:6): But to make water baptism a necessary institution of the Christian religion, which is pure and spiritual, and not carnal and ceremonial, is to derogate from the New Covenant dispensation and set up the legal rites and ceremonies of which this of baptism, or washing with water, was one, as appears from Heb 9:10, where the apostle speaking thereof saith that "it stood only in meats and drinks, and divers baptisms, and carnal ordinances imposed until the time of reformation." If then the time of reformation, or the dispensation of the Gospel, which puts an end to the shadows, be come, then such baptisms and carnal ordinances are no more to be imposed.

GF6:485 (168-?] For Aaron did light the outward candles and lamps in the outward tabernaclesthat were made with hands [Num 8:2]. But Christ the great prophet, priest, bishop and shepherd [1 Pet 2:25], doth enlighten the spirits of men [John 1:9], the candle of the Lord [Prov 20:27], in their tabernacle not made with hands [Heb 9:11], with his true heavenly divine light, which is the life in himself , the word, by whom all things were made [John 1:3f].

(Heb 9:12-14)

IP2:50 (1660): And the apostle distinguisheth the precepts of Moses under the law, which were sprinkled with the blood of sacrifices under the law, Heb 7:19, from the precepts of Christ which he writes in other tables, [Heb 10:16], which are also sprinkled with blood, but not with the blood of bulls and goats, but with his own blood [Heb 9:12-14]; and he that receives any of these precepts out of the blood of Christ, cannot truly and spiritually obey them, though he may strive much to form his spirit into the obedience thereof.

(Heb 9:12)

GF5:265 (1676): And so Christ has ended the Levitical priesthood, and his service, and has taken away the first priesthood, that he may establish the second, who is made higher than the heavens [Heb 7:26], who hath not entered into the worldly sanctuary or tabernacle, but into the holy place by his own blood [Heb 9:12].

(Heb 9:13f)

GF8:11 (1669): The third witness is his blood [1 Jn 5:8], with which the hearts of people are sprinkled, and their consciences are sprinkled with the blood of Jesus. As Moses sprinkled the outside of the posts, &c. with the blood of bulls and goats; which blood of bulls and goats, Christ's blood ends [Heb 9:13f], which sprinkles the heart and conscience of people [Heb 10:22]. So this blood of Jesus Christ, the heavenly man, is felt in the hearts and consciences of people; by which blood they are sanctified [Heb 13:12], they are cleansed from all their dead works, to serve the living God [Heb 9:14], and to serve their dead works no longer. So by this blood they are cleased from all sin [1 Jn 1:7].

MFS 35 (1660): So they have access by one Spirit unto the God the Father [Eph 2:18], Jews, and Gentiles, barbarians, Scythians, bond and free [Col 3:11], if they come unto Christ Jesus the light, life, and everlasting covenant who is given to be the salvation unto the ends of the earth [Acts 13:47], who was offered up by the Eternal Spirit once for all [Heb 9:14].

JN2: 279 (1655): The saints was saved by the answer of a good conscience towards God [1 Pet 3:21], and by the blood of Christ through the eternal spirit had their consciences purged from dead works to serve the living God [Heb 9:14], and they were subject for conscience sake [Rom 13:5].

IP2:114 (1660): ...to make the committing of sin necessary while in the body, is a great derogation to the power of God's grace, and to the mystery of faith, which overcometh the evils of the heart, and the worldly nature within; purifieth the conscience from dead works [Heb 9:14], and is "held in the pure conscience" [1 Tim 3:9].

IP3:35 (1667): Query 4. Wherein lay the value and worth of his sacrifice, and of all he did? Did it lie chiefly in the thing done, or in the life wherein he did it, in that he did it in the pure faith and obedience to the Father? He became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross [Phil 2:8]; and he, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without spot to God [Heb 9:14].

HPS 496 (Anne Whitehead, 1680): Surely these, though they may cry, liberty of conscience, and pretend for tender consciences too, yet they are not fit subjects for that liberty that Christ redeems to, and sets free in [Gal 5:1], to serve him with a conscience purged from dead works [Heb 9:14]....

RBA 173 (1678, VII:3): [Christ]... made peace through the blood of his cross, that he might reconcile us unto himself [Col 1:20], and by the Eternal Spirit offered himself without spot unto God [Heb 9:14], and suffered for our sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us unto God [1 Pet 3:19].

(Heb 10:1)

for GF's use of phrase "types, figures and shadows" [Heb 10:1] see note under Heb 9:9.

[Other texts citing Heb 10:1: RBA 373 (John 6:32- 35), WPR 569/WPT 345 (under Heb 9:1)]

IP2:200 (1661): The law had the shadow of the good things to come [Heb 10:1]; but under it was not the possession of the good things themselves, but only a labouring after them, and a mourning and load because of the want of them: but in the gospel is the substance, the enjoyment; life and immortality are there brought to light [2 Tim 1:10], and an entrance ministered into the everlasting kingdom, where they are felt, possessed, and enjoyed.

RBA 258f (1678, X:17): their service and work [of the Pharisees and priests under the Law] was not purely spiritual, but only the performance of some outward and carnal observations and ceremonies, which were but a shadow of the Substance that was to come, and therefore thier work "made not the comers thereunto perfect as appertaining to the conscience, " [Heb 10:1/9:9] seeing they were appointed only according to the law of a carnal commandment, and not according to the power of an endless life [Heb 7:16].

(Heb 10:4f)

JSS 30f (179-): The sufferings of the seed in that one specially prepared body, could do no more toward reconciling a soul to sin, than the blood of bulls and goats towards the washing away sin [Heb 10:4f], were it not that the promise is sure to all the seed [Rom 4:16]....

(Heb 10:5-7)

[Other texts citing Heb 10:5-7: IP4:172 (under Mat 3:15)]

GF4: 291 (1661): And whether or nay God did not prepare him a body, according to David's prophecy to do his will which God accepted more than burnt-offerings, sacrifices and oblations [Heb 10:5-7, Psa 40:6-8], who put and end to them, for the overspreading of the abomination that made the desolation [Mat 24:15], until your offerings were consumed, and the place where you offered?

MFU 357 (1663): ...deceit & deceivableness lodges in all such as is not begotten & born of the immortal Seed: not corruptible but incorruptible [1 Pet 1:23] which is of the will of God, and doth his will, in that body that is prepared, & in that volume of the book [Heb 10:5,7] where it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, & him only shalt thou serve [Mat 4:10].

IP1:245 (1659): there is a twofold appearance of Christ in the heart; there is an appearance of him as a servant to obey the law, to fulfill the will of the Father in that body which the Father prepares there for him [Heb 10:7,5]; and there is an appearance of him in glory, to reign in the life and power of the Father: and he that knows not the first of these in his heart, shall never know the second there.

HPS 399 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): ... he laid down his life of himself, having power, and being willing so to suffer, according as 'tis written, John 10:18. Yet himself also said, that his body was prepared of his Father, Heb 10:5. In which body he did the will of him that sent him [John 6:38]: Lo, I come to do thy will, O God (saith he) for a body thou hast prepared me [Heb 10:7,5].

JSS 24 (179-): "Lo, I come," says he, and "a body thou hast prepared me." [Heb 10:7,5] The I that came, the me the body was prepared for, is he who says, "Before Abraham was, I am [John 8:58]."

WPR 505 (1693): Pervers.12. The Quakers deny Christ's transaction at Jerusalem, and the shedding of his blood to be beneficial to them; for it is the Light within only they expect to be saved by. Princ. [This is both unfairly] and untruly charged upon them: They do say that the appearance of the second Adam,... the Lord from heaven, the quickening spirit [1 Cor 15:45,47], in that holy Body, prepared of the Father for him [Heb 10:5], was for the salvation of the world, that had fallen in the first Adam.

GF3:324 (1659): ...the christians witnessed the body, Christ Jesus, the one offering [Heb 10:14], who comes as it is written in the volume of the book, to do the will of God [Heb 10:7], who is the substance that the shadow, the signs, and the figures gave forth, who ends them all....

IP2:343 (1663): Mark how every thing in the kingdom, every spiritual thing, refers to Christ, and centers in him. His nature, his virtue, his presence his power, makes up all. Indeed he is all in all to a believer, only variously manifested and opened in the heart by the Spirit. He is the volume of the whole book [Heb 10:7], every leaf and line whereof speaks of him in some or other of his beautiful lineaments. [more]

IP3:435 (1670): Lo! I come, saith the child, to do thy will, O God! [Heb 10:7] to drink the cup thou hast prepared; although there is a nature which cannot but say, If it be possible, let it pass away [Mat 26:39]....

(Heb 10:9f)

GF5:415 (1679): [quotes Heb 10:9f] Mark, once for all sacrifices, who ends them, and once for all the sins of the whole world [1 Jn 2:2], who makes an end of sin, and finishes transgression, and brings in everlasting righteousness, as in Daniel ix [9:24].

IP4:103 (1671): Obs. 28. That we are sanctified by the same will, by which Christ was sanctified, or sanctifieth himself [John 17:19]. In subjection to the same will, which the head obeyed (even in denying themselves, taking up the cross to their own wills, and submitting to God's [Mat 16:24]) are the members sanctified. The Spirit of God works them into holiness by this will of God, and through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once [Heb 10:10].

WPR 621/WPT 313 (1696): We do believe, that Jesus Christ was our holy sacrifice, atonement, and propitiation....; and that through the offering up of himself once and for all [Heb 10:10], through the eternal Spirit, he hath forever perfected those (in all times) that were sanctified [Heb 10:14], who walked not after the flesh, but after the Spirit [Rom 8:1]. Mark that.

And all that be out of this new and living way, though they have all the scriptures, from the beginning of Genesis to the Revelations, yet they are dead, and under the power of death; which Christ the way destroys, through death, yea the power of death, the devil [Heb 2:14]; and was before death and his power was. Here is the new and the living way.

IP3:360f (1675): Quest. But what is the way of peace, which neither the profane, nor any sort of professors out of the life and power, ever knew, nor can know? [Isa 59:8, Rom 3:17] Ans. It is an inward way, a way for the inward Jews, for the inwardly renewed and circumcised [Rom 2:29] to walk in.... It is a living way, which none but the living can find. It is a new way, which none but those to whom God hath given the new eye can see. [Heb 10:20]

IP4:430 (1679): And the new and living way [Heb 10:20], wherein this birth [of God's Spirit] walks, is infallible, in which there is no erring by those who eye the Lord, and follow his Spirit therein. This is the way cast up (the way of holiness, life, and peace), for the ransomed and the redeemed of the Lord to walk in [Isa 51:10f], in the gospel days, in which the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err, Isa 35:8.

HPS 234 (Margaret Fell, 1694): [George Fox] was the instrument in the hand of the Lord in this present age, which he made use of to send forth into the world, to preach the everlasting gospel [Rev 14:6],which had been hid from many ages and generations [Col 1:26]; the Lord revealed it to him, and made him open that new and living way [Heb 10:20] that leads to life eternal, when he was but a youth, and a stripling.

MFU 62 (1654):... IP3:29 (1667): Doth [the natural man] not know the light of day, both from the lights, and also from the darkness of the night? Ten thousand times more certain and inwardly satisfied is he, who is born of the spiritual day, brought forth in the light thereof, and who spiritually sees, lives, and walks therein. So that there is no doubt in him who is grown up into the thing; but he hath the assurance of faith [Heb 10:22] (which is far above the assurance of outward sense or reason), and the assurance of understanding [Col 2:2].

IP4:427 (1679): Indeed in this light I have felt my heart sprinkled from an evil conscience [Heb 10:22] .... The darkness defiles and stains; but in the pure light the heart is washed, cleansed, and sanctified, from whence ariseth the answer of a good conscience toward God [1 Pet 3:21].

Truly, friends, we have had many of these proffers made to us within these twentyor thirty years, but we never durst make such bargains or covenants, to forsake the assembling of ourselves together [Heb 10:25], as we used to do; but did leave our suffering cause wholly to the Lord Christ Jesus, in whose name we were gathered [Mat 18:20], who has all power in heaven and earth given unto him [Mat 28:18]: and the Lord at last did and hath tendered the hearts of many of our persecutors both in England and other places....

HPS 517 (Dorcas Dole, 1684): ...the abomination is yet standing in the hearts of such which are not faithful to the Lord ... so that their calling & election is not made sure [2 Pet 1:10], but excuses are made by such, that they are not to be too forward to go in a trying time to offer sacrifice, and so cause the daily public sacrifices to cease [Dan 12:11], and see not so much need of the continuance of it as the apostle did when he spake to the church in the sense of what Christ had done for them, to offer up spiritual sacrifice through him to God [1 Pet 2:5]; and they were exhorted, not to forsake the assembling of themselves together, as the manner of some were [Heb 10:25], that saw not the necessity of it...

IP3:138 (1668): In this declining state some fell from the doctrine of truth, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. 1 Tim 4:1. Some from the fellowship of worship, it being the manner of some to forsake assembling themselves together, Heb 10:25, which the church, when first gathered, was very diligent in. Acts 2:42,46. Some held the form of knowledge and profession, but fell from the life and power. 2 Tim 3:5. Yea, many ways did the wolfish false spirits drive and scatter from the flock, as they could get entrance into men's minds.

RBA 293 (1678, XI:3] Nay, we are none of those that "forsake the assembling of themselves together" [Heb 10:25], but even have certain times and places in which we carefully meet together (nor can we be driven therefrom by the persecutions and threats of men) to wait upon God and worship him. To meet together we think necessary for the people of God, because so long as we are clothed with this outward tabernacle [2 Pet 1:13] there is the necessity to the entertaining of a joint and visible fellowship, and bearing of an outward testimony for God, and seeing of the faces of one another, that we concur with our persons as well as spirits.

WPR 624 (1696; WPT 333): Not that we would be thought to undervalue public and solemn meetings: we have them all over the nations, where the Lord has called us. Yeah, though but two or three of us [Mat 18:20] be in the corner of a country, we meet, as the apostle exhorted the saints of his time, and reproved such as neglected to assemble themselves [Heb 10:25].

(Heb 10:29)

GF frequently uses phrase "walk despitefully against the spirit of grace" [Heb 10:29], and often combines it with "turn the grace of God into wantonness" [Jude 1:4] and other verses such as Tit 2:11f, Neh 9:20/26, 1 Th 5:19, etc.

[Other texts citing Heb 10:29: JN1:508f (Rom 4:5), IP3:45 (Rev 11:8), IP3:258 (under Jude 1:4), RBA 197 (Heb 7:19)]

GF4:48 (1655): O how is the spirit grieved and vexed (Isa 63:10/Eph 4:30) with your vanity and abominations? O how is the just trodden under feet? [Heb 10:29] O how is everyone carried away with vanity and vexation of spirit [Eccl 1:14], and covered with it?

JN2:73 (1655): O all you who have cast the law of God behind you (Neh 9:26) and walk despitefully against the Spirit of grace [Heb 10:29], give over your profession for shame, and never profess you love God [Tit 1:16]....

HPS 316 (Rebecca Travers, 1669): the increase of light, and the dominion thereof, must never have end [Isa 9:7], and the enlargement and growth thereof hath and doth enrage the whole world that love darkness better than light [John 3:19]; so they have bent their bows, and prepared their arrows, and their tongues are become as a two-edged sword [Psa 64:3] to wound the innocent for the poison of asps [Rom 3:13] is under that which speaks despitefully against the spirit of grace [Heb 10:29]....

HPS 394f [Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679]: If people will make their necks an iron sinew [Isa 48:4], and will not yield them to the yoke of Christ [Mat 11:29], being stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, always resisting the Holy Ghost [Acts 7:51], and doing despight unto the spirit of grace [Heb 10:29]; setting at nought the counsel of God [Prov 1:25]; ... Will it not be just then for Him to laugh at their calamity, and mock when fear cometh upon them [Prov 1:26]?

WPR 339 (1673): We professed God; but like our neighbours in works we denied him [Tit 1:16]. We worshipped him after men's conceivings, insomuch that I may say, we worshipped the unknown God [Acts 17:23] in a false way. No doubt we were stocked with the common talk of religion, but the Cross of Christ we were strangers to. His blood we extolled, whilst by wicked works we trod it under foot [Heb 10:29]; and believed ourselves saved by it, who were uncleansed from sin.

JSS 26 (179-): Can the blood of the covenant be trodden under foot and despised? Can despite be done to that holy spirit of grace and salvation? [Heb 10:29] Can a birth of real life be stifled and slain? It can.

JN2:316 (1655): ...Christ in his wants and wanderings, hunger and nakedness, mocking, buffeting, stocking, stoning, prisonings, in his temptings, fasting, whippings, banishings out of towns and cities, and countries, as a sign to be spoken against everywhere [Luke 2:34], a stumbling stone and rock of offence [Isa 8:14] to all sorts of professions, especially to the wisest, as the offscouring, scum, and filth of the world [1 Cor 4:13], and a gazing-stock [Heb 10:33] wherever he comes in the flesh; so he is to this day, who suffers the opposition of all the wicked; this is his glory, and this is his joy in this world, wherein we rejoice to be counted worthy to suffer with him [Acts 25:41]....

IP2:144f (1661): Christ, the Lord and Master of all believers, who himself was not in the world, calleth all his disciples and followers out of the world [John 15:19]. How, out of the world? Doth he call them from having any being or commerce in the earth, or in the world? Nay, not so; but to come out of the evil or corrupt state, practices, and ways of the world; out of the earthly ways of the heathens, out of the earthly ordinances and observations of the Jews; yea, even out of every thing in both, which was not of the Father, but of the world [1 Jn 2:16]; and this made them a gazing-stock [Heb 10:33] to both, and the scorn and hatred of both, wherever they came.

SIW 51 (Ruth Alcock Follows, 17–): But oh! the exercise this brought upon me, for I found self was yet for being pleased, and I was not willing to be counted a fool [1 Cor 4:10], and was for being almost any thing so that the Lord would be pleased without this, that I might not become a gazing-stock to the world [Heb 10:33] ....

GF7:36 (1653): So, we that suffer our goods to be spoiled joyfully [Heb 10:34], it is for Christ's sake, the unchangeable priest [Heb 7:24], and for the new covenant's sake, and the new testament's sake. As the Hebrews did, who ... were a gazing-stock [Heb 10:33]; and so we suffer now by the changeable priesthood, which takes tithes, as the people of God did then.

GF3:548f (1659): Christ being come the substance, Heb x.34.

GF7:27 (1652): Every one to have an inheritance (of their own) of life, that they may offer to God of their heavenly substance, who are called a royal priesthood [1 Pet 2:9]; that is, a kingly priesthood over the devil, and over Adam, in a possession of a spiritual kingdom, and of a world that hath no end, and of a heavenly durable substance and riches [Heb 10:34/Prov 8:18] which are spiritual; and so to offer up spiritual sacrifices to God [1 Pet 2:5], who is a spirit [John 4:24].

GF7:83 (1654): And show forth the substance to them, (if ye have an opportunity,) showing to them, that ye suffer for conscience sake.... And being guided by the light, it will let you join to none of their vain inventions, that are acted and made in that nature that is contrary to the light; it will bring you to witness the sum and substance, Christ Jesus, over all the world. And so, if the spoilers take your goods [Heb 10:34], let them go, and let them take the coat also [Mat 5:40]....

JN2:84f (1655): And though we suffer the spoiling of our goods [Heb 10:34], yet it is not as evildoers, but following the example of Christ and his church herein, denying the pope, bishops, and all their rabble of officers they have set up without Christ and contrary to him in their inventions.

SIW 127 (Mary Alexander, 17–): When my mind became thus far awakened, and was seeking a better and more enduring substance [Heb 10:34] than had heretofore been my experience....

(Heb 10:36)

GF6:173f (1684): So every one shall receive a reward and judgment according to his works, whether they be good or evil; and therefore all the saints have need of patience, to exercise that gift that after they have done the will of God, they might inherit the promise of eternal life [Heb 10:36]; for so is the will of God, that with well doing you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men [1 Pet 2:15].

(Heb 10:38)

GF8:218 (1682): For the apostle saith, "The just man lives by faith [Rom 1:17, Heb 10:38]." And this is not by any faith which men make, but by the faith which Christ Jesus is both the author and finisher of [Heb 12:2], in your hearts and consciences; and in this faith ye have access to God [Rom 5:2], and do please him [Heb 11:6]. But, "if any man draw back," (to wit, in not living by this faith,) doth not the Lord say, "My soul shall have no pleasure in him [Heb 10:38]?" But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition, (that is a sad drawing back,) but of them that believe, to the saving of our souls.

IP4:44 (167-): ..believing includes not only a beginning to believe, but a going on therein, and continuing to the end. For so is the promise and word of Christ, "He that continueth to the end shall be saved." [Mat 10:22] But if any man draw back from the Lord, from his spirit, and return into the way of death with the other spirit, the soul of the Lord will have no pleasure in him [Heb 10:38].
