GF8:173f (1679): For you may see how the Jews in the old covenant did judge of things among themselves, as long as they kept the law of God, and did not go to other nations, or to the heathens, for them to judge of their matters; and therefore the apostle reproves the Corinthians for that fault, "for going to law one with another before unbelievers [1 Cor 6:6]," and told them, that "the saints should judge the word," yea, angels; and then how much more might they judge of things appertaining to this life? And therefore the apostle exhorted, "If then ye have judgment of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge that are least esteemed in the church [1 Cor 6:2-4]"....

IP4:284 (1675?): ...wherever Christ's life in any judgeth and condemneth any thing, that is judged and condemned by Christ. And the saints have power and authority, in Christ, not only to judge and condemn the world, but also to judge and condemn fallen angels and spirits [1 Cor 6:2f]. To what end are they bid to try the spirit [1 Jn 4:1], if after they have tried them, they may not judge and condemn what they find life and truth judging and condemning?

RBA 183, RBAF 141 (1678, VII.7): [quotes 1 Cor 6:11] First, this "justified" here understood, must needs be a being made really just , and not a being merely imputed such; else "sanctified" and "washed" might be reputed a being esteemed so, and not a being really so; and then it overturns the whole intent of the context. For the apostle showing them in the preceding verses, how the "unrighteous cannot inherit the kingdom of God," and descending to the several species of wickedness [1 Cor 6:9f], subsumes, that they were sometimes [once] such, but now are not any more such. Wherefore, as they are now washed and sanctified, so are they justified; for if this justification were not real, then it might be alleged that the Corinthians had not forsaken these evils, but were, though still they continued in them, notwithstanding justified.

JSS 67 (179-): Complete salvation is complete reconciliation to, and union with God. "He that is joined to the Lord is one spirit [1 Cor 6:17]." "God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself [2 Cor 5:19];" "of twain making one new man, and so making peace [Eph 2:15]." Peace can never be fully known whilst the twain remains. All that is in man, even "every thought," must be "brought into captivity," or subjection, "to the obedience of Christ [2 Cor 10:5]."

RBA 41, RBAF 31 (1678, II.10): That this Spirit is inward, in my opinion needs no interpretation nor commentary. "He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you [John 14:17]." This indwelling of the Spirit in the saints, as it is a thing most needful to be known and believed, so is it as postively asserted in the Scripture as anything else can be. "If so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you," saith the apostle to the Romans (8:9); and again, "Know ye not that ye are the temple of the Holy Ghost [1 Cor 6:19], and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you [1 Cor 6:16]?": without this the apostle reckoneth no man a Christian. "If any man," saith he, "have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his [Rom 8:14]."

HPS 532 (Women's Yearly Meeting at York, 1688): And, friends, be not concerned in reference to marriage out of God's fear, but first wait to know your Maker to become your husband and the bridegroom of your souls, then you will come to know that you are not your own [1 Cor 6:19], but that he must have the ordering and disposing of you, in soul, body, and spirit, which are all his; for he, being the only one unto you, and the chiefest of ten thousand [Song 5:10] among you, will be your beloved and your friend [Song 5:16].

IP1:55f (1658): [continued from 1 Jn 4:3] Now what is an idol? The Apostle Paul saith, "An idol is nothing in the world [1 Cor 8:4]." An idol is no true thing in its place; but a false thing set up instead of the true. A false conception of God in the mind is an idol; a false church or temple is an idol; a false minister, who is not made according to the appointment of God, and by the gift of his Spirit [2 Cor 3:5f, Eph 3:7], but came in another way [John 10:1], by the appointment of man, is an idol shepherd [Zech 11:17]; and the worship in this church, and by this ministry, is public idolatry; and all the worship in families, which has been erected after the same manner, without the guidance of the Spirit of God, is private idolatry.

GF4:277f (1661): "Now the consciences of the weak," saith the apostle, "must not be emboldened for to do such things which another doth, which they have not liberty in themselves to do, lest the consciences of the weak be wounded, and so they perish though another's knowledge, for whom Christ hath died [1 Cor 8:10-12]". Now this was not called nor looked upon by the apostle to be true wisdom, nor good judgment; for when ye sin against your brethren, you wound their consciences so you sin against Christ. So that is a sin against Christ concluded, which wounds the consciences of any, to lead, or teach, or force, or compel any contrary to their consciences, their weak consciences; this is a sin against Christ, and a bringing people in a perishing condition, and to lose the state of a good conscience.

IP1:194 (1659): Though the cry hath long been, Hurt not the tender conscience [1 Cor 8:12]; it is that on which God works, and wherein he chooseth to appear, and with which he is pleased, and pities. Many promises have been, touching liberty of conscience; yet still the meek of the earth [Isa 11:4 et al], the innocent lambs of Christ (those that are faithful to the light of God in their consciences) are persecuted and suffer. What canst thou plead, O England! Why the Lord should not break thee all in pieces [Psa 72:4], and save his people himself, by and in the midst of thy ruins? .... It would be better and easier for thee to yield unto, than be forced by, his hand. Therefore, at length hear his voice, which has so often and so loudly cried unto thee, "Let my people go, that they may serve me [Exo 7:16]."
