(Rom 6:1f)

RBA 222 (1678, VIII.9): And if hoping or believing to be made free from sin hinders praying for forgiveness of sin, it would follow by the same inference that men ought not to forsake murder, adultery, or any of these gross evils, seeing the more men are sinful the more plentiful occasion there would be of asking forgiveness of sin, and the more work for mortification. But the apostle hath sufficiently refuted such sin-pleasing cavils in these words (Rom 6:1-2): "Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid."

(Rom 6:2)

GF3:217 (1659): And such as are made free from sin [Rom 6:18,22], and dead to it, and cannot live any longer therein [Rom 6:2], these have peace. And such have not peace where the body of sin is standing, and sin in the heart; there is the war.

JN1:132 (1653): And thou sayst "that by denying sin to be in them they overthrow repentance"; but here thou showest thy blindness. For he that forsakes his sin doth establish his repentance; but he that returns unto sin again, overthrows it. [Note: Rom 6:2, 7:18,22; 1 John 3:8-10.]

(Rom 6:3-5)

GF6:293 (1685): [quotes Rom 6:3-5] Mark, they were baptized into Jesus Christ, and his death. Then that must be by the holy ghost.... So they that come out of this death by baptism, walk in newness of life; and this baptism into Christ and his death, is not the baptism of John, with his outward elementary water.

MFU 31 (1653): And if thou did believe so as to be baptized into his death, and to be buried with him in baptism [Rom 6:3f], then would thou know, & wait for a great thing, brought forth in thy own particular, and not look for it abroad only, but at home also.

JN3:100 (1656): In the world there be many sorts and forms of baptisms, but in Christ there is but one [Eph 4:5], and that is that of the Spirit [1 Cor 12:13]; and this is the baptism of Christ, and all that are baptized with it are baptized into his death, and buried with him [Rom 6:3f] to the world, its ways and worships, loves and friendships, and to all that in them is which would bow or conform thereto; and through this death is the seed of God raised up out of the grave, quickened by the same Spirit which raised Jesus from the dead [Rom 8:11].

SIW 160 (Ann Crowley, 18–): We attended each monthly and particular meeting; in which weighty engagement, my mind was often reduced to a very low state, baptized into death and suffering [Rom 6:3]; but, with an honest endeavour to abide with the gift of grace, in patience and confidence, I was mercifully favoured, at times, to feel the arising of that Almighty power, which can alone enable the poor instruments to minister....

WDS 252 (1686): My dear Friends, as you have received the Truth in some measure, watch and pray [Mat 26:41], and believe in the name of Christ [1 Jn 3:23]; that his power you may feel the heavenly inspiration of his blessed Spirit, to lay judgment to the line and righteousness to the plummet [Isa 28:17], that all that is not obedient to the light of Christ, may be kept down, and buried in the heavenly baptism under the sentence of death [Rom 6:4]; as it was and is with all the children of God, who have received the sentence of death in ourselves, that we may have no confidence in ourselves [2 Cor 1:9], but trust alone in the living God.

IP3:295 (1674): Quest. What is obedience? Ans. The obedience which flows from the true understanding of God's will, and from the holy nature which he begets in the heart.... There is no birth can believe aright but one; nor is there any birth that can obey aright, but that birth which believes aright. The true believing is from the quickening virtue of God's Spirit (all other faith is but dead faith); and the true obedience is in the newness of the Spirit. Rom 6:4 and 7:6. Man may strive to understand and obey all his days; but he can do neither, but as he is quickened, taught, and enabled of the Lord. "Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statues.": Psa 119:33.

HPS 411 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): .... turn in hither, even unto the secret of your own soul, to that which there reproves you for your sins, witnessing for God against all unrighteousness of men [Rom 1:18], both in thought, word, and action, striving in their hearts to turn them from the evil of their ways, and from the vanity of their conversations, to walk in the newness of life [Rom 6:4], that so they may be redeemed and restored out of thier fallen state of degeneration, into the image of God again [Col 3:10], which hath been lost through transgression.

JSS 44 (17–): and he that will rise with him in the newness of the divine life, must first be buried with him in that baptism which is into real death unto all sin [Rom 6:4], even the baptism by which the floor of the heart is thoroughly cleansed [Mat 3:11f]

GF6:52 (1679): And the law commanded the priests' tithes [Heb 7:5] and offerings, and the store- house [Mal 3:10]: and these outward things with many others, were elements of the world, which kept them in bondage [Gal 4:3], in the old covenant and old testament, before Christ was revealed. And where faith is revealed by Jesus Christ, who is the author and finisher of it [Heb 12:2], he is the end of that law to every one that believeth [Rom 10:4]; which law commanded these outward worldly elements; and "such are not under the law, but under grace [Rom 6:14]."

IP3:500 (1673): There are some ... who have seen an end of all perfection [Psa 119:96], in the legal comprehendings and creaturely strivings after life, righteousness, and holiness, and are come to the commandment which is exceeding broad [Psa 119:96], and wherein is life everlasting. Now these experience somewhat of the gospel dispensation, and know the difference between being under the law and under grace [Rom 6:14]; and can tell what the Kingdom is which Christ preached and made men seek [Mat 6:33], and what the gospel is which the poor in spirit [Mat 5:3] receive; and what the healing is which drops from under the wing of the Saviour and Redeemer [Mal 4:2].

RBA 67, RBAF 51 (1678, III.2): The Law or letter, which is without us, kills; but the Gospel, which is the inward spiritual law, gives life [2 Cor 3:6]; for it consists not so much in words as in virtue. Wherefore such as come to know it, and be acquainted with it, come to feel greater power over their iniquities than all outward laws or rules can give them. Hence the apostle concludes (Rom 6:14), "Sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the Law, but under grace." This grace then that is inward, and not an outward law, is to be the rule of Christians. [continued under Rom 8:2]

GF8:12f (1669): But do you never give over seeking, for the light shines over all, which believe in, and walk in the path of the just, which is as a shining light [Prov 4:18]; for it hath been the work of all the false teachers and ministers to drive away from God, and his truth, and light, and those have been the devil's servants, and the wages he gives them is death [Rom 6:23]. This hath been the way of all true ministers, "to seek that which was lost, and that which was driven away [Ezek 34:16];" as you may see Christ and the apostles, and all the true prophets did, and to bring them to feed in the pastures of life, and gently to lead them, whose wages is life; and he gives them their heavenly penny [Mat 20:9] of life eternal.

IP3:84f (1668): ...he saith, "Death being the first-born of the law, it went forth as a conqueror of all life, both in God and man." Observ. The law is holy, just and good [Rom 7:12], and bringeth forth only that which is holy. Sin is not of the law, but against the law, and the wages of sin is death [Rom 6:23]. Yet neither sin nor death could ever conquer the life of God, but the unconquerable life and power have ever reigned over them. God's kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endureth throughout all ages [Psa 145:13], which sin, nor death, nor hell could ever conquer.

RBA 94f (1678, IV.4): ...they object, that "the wages of sin is death [Rom 6:23]"; and that seeing children are subject to diseases and death, therefore they must be guilty of sin. Answ. I answer, That these things are a consequence of the fall and of Adam's sin is confessed; but that that infers necessarily a guilt in all others that are subject to them is denied. For though the whole outward creation suffered a decay by Adam's fall, which groans [Rom 8:22] under vanity; according to which it is said in Job that "the heavens are not clean in the sight of God [Job 15:15]"; yet will it not from thence follow that the herbs, earth, and trees are sinners.

7:1 Know [ T: Remember] ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion [BT: power] over a man as long as he liveth [ T: it endureth] ?

Secondly, a state of death after the commandment came: then sins revived, and he died [Rom 7:9; more under Rom 7:23f].... Thirdly, A state of life, after the commandment had done its work in thoroughly slaying of him; when that was removed which the law came against, then he was married to another husband, then he could bring forth fruit unto God [Rom 7:4]; then he could walk freely with God, not after the flesh, but after the Spirit [Rom 8:1], and rejoice in the life and the peace, instead of roaring out because of the death, which came from the carnal mind [Rom 8:6].

IP1:242 (1659): The true knowledge is only poured into the new vessel.... Every building which the leprosy of sin hath overspread, is to be pulled down; therefore he that hath only the old house swept and garnished [Mat 12:44], never received the true knowledge, from whence the true faith springs, but his life lies in the oldness of the letter [Rom 7:6], in the conformity of the dead part to that, and he knows not the virtue of the knowledge of God in the newness of the Spirit (The veil being over his heart [2 Cor 3:15]) which is only given to the new understanding.

EQ 179 (Francis Howgill, 1656): How long have you talked of the Spirit, and worshipped in spirit [John 4:23f]? And yet indeed deny its leading and teaching, and live in the oldness of the letter [Rom 7:6], and crying up and setting up things that are carnal, visible and elementary, and washing is not known from sin, nor cleansing; and so you may see what operation your spirit you have talked on has, when you are still what you were.

SBD 65 (1750): ...for want of keeping humble and inward in spirit with the Lord, they have insensibly gone from the foundation and spring of living ministry, and depended on memory, former experience, and openings, and not on the inspiration of the Spirit, which is the root of all true ministry, and what proceeds from it is always new and acceptable. I say, such have fallen into repetitions of the same things, without a newness of virtue attending them therein, and so have become formal ministers in the oldness of the letter [Rom 7:6].

GFJN 22 ([1648]): There was a meeting of priests and professors at a justice's house, and I went among them. Here they discoursed how Paul said, "he had not known sin but by the law, which said, thou shalt not lust [Rom 7:7]:" and they held that to be spoken of the outward law. But I told them, Paul spoke that after he was convinced; for he had the outward law before, and was bred up in it, when he was in the lust of persecution; but this was the law of God in his mind which he served [Rom 7:25], which the law in his members warred against [Rom 7:23]: for that which he thought had been life to him, proved death.

GF5:95 (1675): Now it is an easy matter to make an outward profession of Christ's death, but it is another matter to come to die with Christ, and suffer with him; which they must do, if they will come to live, and be glorified with him. Again, Rom 7:9: "I was once alive without the law" (yet he had been a strict professor of the law; so are not you strict professors alive without the gospel?) "But when the commandment came, sin revived and I died," saith the apostle. Can ye professors say so, as many of us can, who were alive in a profession without the possession, where we see many of you yet remaining?

MFS 93 (to the Ranters, 1656): You, who are in your carnal apprehensionsof God, are in the world without God. You are alive without the law [Rom 7:9], [have] not come to know the law yet, and are dead in sins and trespasses [Eph 2:1]. You, that live in pleasure, are dead while you live [1 Tim 5:6]. You live unto sin and so are free from righteousness [Rom 6:20]. The law which is holy, just, and good [Rom 7:12], shall cut you to pieces. You are not yet come to know the law, nor what is lawful, which every one passes through before they come to know the liberty of the sons of God [Rom 8:21—which law cuts down all your carnal apprehensions of God.

IP1:132 (1659): they think to be saved by believing a relation concerning Christ, as he appeared in a fleshly body, and suffered death at Jerusalem. Whereas Christ is the same yesterday, to-day, and for ever [Heb 13:8]; and the saving knowledge reveals him, not only as he was then, but as he was the day before, and will be for ever. And this knowledge is also revealed in the Scripture; but they are so drowned in the letter, wherewith the carnal part is so filled, that the spiritual eye cannot open in them to see: so that which was ordained for life, becomes death to them [2 Cor 3:6, Rom 7:10], and they perish; ... for their eyes are withheld, by a wisdom which they have grown up in from the letter, from the beholding the mystery of life in the spirit, which alone can work out and save from the mystery of death.

And as your minds are kept to this law that God hath written to show sin and evil, you will come to see the power that sin hath got over you, and that you are wholly polluted and sold under it [Rom 7:14]; then will you see the great transgression, and the fear of God will appear in you, and so your hearts will grow tender in his fear, which is but the beginnings of the knowledge of God and his wisdom [Prov 1:7, Psa 111:10, Prov 9:10].

Such as know the nature of that which manifests sin, know it to be spiritual. It is the fallen man from the light, the man in the darkness, that calls the light darkness [Isa 5:20]: but that which discovers the darkness, and reproves the darkness, and wars against the darkness, it is not darkness, but the light of life.
