IP1:58 (1658): Learn then, and know in thyself that Spirit of prophecy [Rev 19:10] which spoke in the martyrs. Hear that, come to that, keep to that; feel the union, the fellowship, the spreading of that in thee. When that bids thee go, go; when that bids thee come, come; when that bids thee do this, do it [Mat 8:9 | Luk 7:8].
WPR 48 (1669): [True honour] is manifest from the case of the centurion in Christ's time, who made not the honour and respect due to him from his soldiers to consist in hats, gestures, or vain ceremonies, but in the ready execution of his commands, as when he said to one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, do this, and he doth it [Mat 8:9 | Luk 7:8]; nor is [hat-honour] practiced now among soldiers (as being an effeminate custom, unworthy of masculine gravity), yet they are obedient, and truly honour their office.
(Mat 8:11)
GF7: 150 (1658): be patient, and keep low and down in the power of the Lord God, that there ye may come to enjoy the kingdom of peace, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the same [Mat 8:11]. For blessed are all ye that lie down in the power of the Lord, and rise up in it, and in faith remain; through which power ye come to be preserved and united to the God of life and truth.
RBA 231f (1678, X.2): [from the etymology of ekklesia] the Church is no other thing but the society, gathering, or company of such as God hath called out of the world and worldly Spirit, to walk in his Light and Life.... out of which Church we freely acknowledge there can be no salvation, because under this church are comprehended all ... (though outwardly strangers and remote from those who profess Christ and Christianity in words and have the benefit of the Scriptures) as become obedient to the holy Light and testimony of God in their hearts, so as to become sanctified and cleansed from the evils of their ways. For this is the universal or catholic Spirit by which many are called "from the four corners of the earth [Isa 11:12] and shall sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob [Mat 8:11]".
(Mat 8:11f)
IP1:210 (1659): They shut up the true kingdom [Mat 23:13]; but they opened another kingdom; they opened the kingdom another way [John 10:1] (which was in truth shutting of it); and they had disciples and children of the kingdom, whom they tickled with the hope of life, and fed with promises and comforts; but these the Lord would shut out. "Many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven; but the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness [Mat 8:11f]."

HPS 134 (Esther Biddle, 1662): Oh then! if you have not done justice, nor loved mercy [Mic 6:8], or did the thing that was just in the sight of the Lord, then shall you be banished from the presence of the King of Heaven for evermore, into utter darkness, where there is weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth [Mat 8:12], and you shall be a stink to the ages to come.

WPR 575, WPT 357f (1694): Seeing upon a serious trial of all things, nothing else would do but Christ himself; the light of his countenance, a touch of his garment, and help from his hand; who cured the poor woman's issue [Mat 9:20-22 | Mar 5:25-23 | Luk 8:43-48], raised the centurion's servant [Mat 8:13 | Luk 7:10], the widow's son [Luk 7:12-15], the ruler's daughter [Mat 9:18,23-25 | Mar 5:35-43 | Luk 8:49-55], and Peter's mother [Mat 8:14f | Mar 1:30f | Luk 4:38f]: And like her, they no sooner felt his power and efficacy upon their souls, but they gave up to obey him in a testimony to his power....

GF2:254 (1682): In him sit down [Eph 2:6], who is above the subtle foxes in their holes, and the fowls of the air in their nests; I say, sit down in Christ, who hath no place among them to lay his head [Mat 8:20 | Luk 9:58]; he is your rest.
JN1:490 (1655): Christ wandered up and down and had not whereon to lay his head [Mat 8:20 | Luk 9:58], and many followed him. And the apostles wandered to and fro and had "no certain dwelling place" [1 Cor 4:11]. Now had you lived in their days you would have reproached them, as you do those that follow them now, and so here I charge you to be acted by a contrary spirit to Christ, the prophets and apostles.

SIW 43 (Lydia Rawlinson Lancaster, 1754): Oh! how he stood at the helm, steered my course, and bore up my head through the strong rolling waves, when mighty tossings were likely to overwhelm me, had not the rock of his presence attended and rebuked the winds and set bounds to the seas. [Mat 8:23-27]

GF7:157 (1658): To all the elect, chosen and faithful [Rev 17:14] ..., who have not feared the waves of the sea, nor the winds [Mat 8:26]; who fear not the storms nor the weather; whose anchor holds, which is the hope, the mystery [Col 1:27], which anchors the soul [Heb 6:19] which is immortal, to the immortal God.

GF5:[286,] 288 (1676): And let New England professors see ... whether or no they have not sometimes cast some poor people into the sea, on pretence of being witches.... Who with thy dark spirit imagines, that the witches can fetch or pluck the wind out of God's fist [Prov 30:4]. Oh! abominable! it is much if the Lord doth not let his wind fly at you, and raise a storm against you, who are erred from the faith [1 Tim 6:10] of the holy men of God [2 Pet 1:21]; for Christ commandeth the winds and they obey him. Luk 8:25.
HPS 268 (Joan Vokins, 1691): As we were sailing on the sea, it opened in my heart to visit Friends at Nevice; but the owner of the vessel being a hypocritical professor, caused my exercise to be the more; but the power of the Lord was manifest; and the winds and the sea obeyed [Mat 8:27], that we were carried to Nevice against his will....
WTG 174 (Elizabeth Hudson, 1749): he...conducted us safe through the tossing waves of a troubled sea and preserved us from showing any unbecoming diffidence of that power whom the wind and seas obey– [Mat 8:27]
Mat 8:28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs [GBT: which came out of the graves], exceeding [G: very; B: and were very; T: and were out of measure] fierce, so that no man might pass [GBT: go] by that way.

WPR 138 (1677): The divine sense in the soul is begotten by the Lord. 'Tis his Life and Spirit, his holy breath and power, that quickeneth the soul, and maketh it sensible of its own state, and of God's will; and that raiseth fervent desires in it to be eternally blessed. This is that which Satan rageth at; he feareth his Kingdom, he findeth that he is come that will cast him out of his possessions. He cryeth out, "Why art thou come to torment me before my time?" [Mat 8:28] He is the father of vain thoughts, he begetteth them in the mind, on purpose to draw the mind off from that sense....
(Mat 8:30-32 | Mar 5:11-13 | Luk 8:32f)
JN2:210 (1655): And the light is in the world where all are sinners, but none have the life but who receive it, and are led out of the world by it; to such sheep Christ is keeper, who follow him out of uncleanness, and for such he is become an undertaker, the strong man to bind and cast out [Mat 12:29], who believe he will do it for them; but the swine he keeps not, the shepherd they will not follow, there the devil must enter and hath power, and into the sea must they run headlong [Mat 8:30-32 | Mar 5:11-13 | Luk 8:32f].
(Mat 8:34 | Mar 5:17)
IP1:380 (1660): He did not hold forth to them whatever he knew to be the truth, requiring them to believe it; but was content with them in their state, and waited till their capacities were enlarged, being still satisfied with the honesty and integrity of their hearts in their present state of weakness. Nor did he strive to reign over the world, or call for fire from heaven, when they would not receive him [Luk 9:54f], or express indignation when they desired him to depart out of their coasts [Mat 8:34 | Mar 5:17], or pray for twelve legions of angels when they came to betray him [Mat 26:53], and most unrighteously sought his life; but the life he had received of his Father he gave up as a ransom for his disciples, yea, and for his enemies [Mat 20:28].
Mat 9:2 And, behold [GT: lo], they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a [G: Laid on a; B: lying in a; T: lying in his] bed: and Jesus seeing their faith [BT: when Jesus saw the faith of them, he] said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer [G: comfort]; thy sins be [G: are] forgiven thee.
Mat 9:3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within [G: with; T: in] themselves, This man blasphemeth. qtext
Mat 9:4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts [GBT: when Jesus saw their thoughts, he] said, Wherefore think ye evil [G: +things] in your hearts?
Mat 9:5 For whether is [G: +it] easier, to say, Thy sins be [G: are] forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?
Mat 9:6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power [G: authority] on earth to forgive sins [BT: to forgive sins in earth], (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto [T: home to] thine house.
Mat 9:7 And he arose, and departed to his [GT: +own] house.
Mat 9:8 But when the multitudes [G: multitude; T: people] saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto[G: authority to] men.

JWJM 251f (17–): If depth of knowledge and a high title had been sufficient reasons to make a splendid show, [Christ] would have made it. He told the woman of Samaria sundry things relative to her past life [John 4:16-19], made mention of the decease of Lazarus [John 11:14], and answered the scribe who accounted him a blasphemer, without information [Mat 9:3-6 | Mar 2:6-9 | Luk 5:21-23], and having the spirit without measure [John 3:34] knew what was in man. The title of Lord he owned, nor was it ever more justly given to any–that in riches and wisdom and greatness there was none on earth equal to him; and as he lived in perfect plainness and simplicity, the greatest in his family cannot by virtue of their station claim a right to live in worldly grandeur without contradicting his doctrine who said: "It is enough for a disciple to be as his master" [Mat 10:25].

GF2:343 (1689): Jesus saw Matthew "sitting at the receipt of custom, and he said unto him, follow me. And he arose and followed him." Mat 9:9. And Christ employed Matthew to gather his people, that were scattered from God; another manner of treasure than the outward custom of the Romans.
WPR 63 (1669): Nor were the Apostles, the immediate messengers of the Lord Jesus Christ, other than poor men, one a fisherman, one a tentmaker [Acts 18:1-3], and he that was of the greatest (though not the honestest) employment was a customer [customs gatherer, Mat 9:9] (perhaps some waiter or the like); therefore it is very unlikely that any of them were followers of the fashions of the world.

JN2:40 (1656): Thou says Christ accompanied with prodigals and harlots, and then says try John 15:2, and there thou art tried to be a liar and a fruitless branch cut off; and though Christ taught prodigals and harlots, yet he was not a companion with them [Mat 9:10-13 | Mar 2:15-17 | Luk 5:29-32]; neither can thy harlot's mind, who art out of the light, know him or his company.

[Other texts citing Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31]: IP4:95f (John 3:14)]
GF3:256 (1659): He saith, "The Bible is the soul's physic: and people must depend upon the spirit's speaking in the scriptures." A. The soul's refreshment is Christ, and its physician Christ [Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31]; many have the Bible, and do not know it, and the scriptures, as the Pharisees had; the soul's physician is that which the scriptures speak of: many may have the words, the Bible, and yet not have the thing it speaks of; and they that have the thing it speaks of, have both.
IP1:128 (1659): Christ is the skillful Physician [Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31]; he cures the disease, by removing the cause. The unskillful physicians, they heal deceitfully; crying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace [Jer 6:14, 8:11], while that which breaks the peace is standing: but Christ doth not so, but slays the enmity in the heart by the blood of his cross, so making peace [Eph 2:15f]. And this is true peace, certain peace.
IP3:278 (1672): Indeed the physician is come inwardly and spiritually, and he inwardly heals and restoreth his people.... But there are some who are so sound and whole in their notional apprehensions and practices, that they have no need of the physician [Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31], and them the physician passeth by, as unworthy of him, and whom he intendeth shall have no share with him. "Ephraim is joined to idols" (he is well, he hath enough, he hath no need of me) "let him alone," saith the Lord [Hos 4:17].
WPR 172f (1682): The whole needs not the physician [Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31], the full have no need to sigh, nor the rich to cry for help. Those that are not sensible of inward wants, that have no fears or terrors upon them, who feel no need of God's power to help them, nor the light of his countenance to comfort them; what have such to do with prayer? ... They pray the will of God may be done [Mat 6:10 | Luk 11:2]; and do constantly their own....

GF4:20f (1653): Christ saith, I call sinners to repentance [Mat 9:13 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:32]; that light in thee calls thee to repentance, and if thou hearkenest to that, thou hearkenest to Christ, and if thou hatest that [John 3:20], thou hatest Christ, and God.... And thou that sayest thou had not come to repentance, if thou hadst not known the letter, thou deniest Christ, who came to call sinners to repentance before the letter was; it is he that calls sinners to repentance, and not the letter....
GF6:316 (1685): Let all destroyers and persecutors about religion consider this, how short they have been of the practice of the law of God, and the nobility of true christianity; and let them all go learn this lesson what the Lord saith, "I will have mercy, and not sacrifice." [Mat 9:13, Hos 6:6]

Mat 9:17 Neither do men [G: they] put new wine into old bottles [GBT: vessels (4x)]: else the bottles [G: +would] break, and the wine runneth out [G: would be spilt] , and the bottles [G: +should] perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are [GT: so are both] preserved [T: saved; BT +together]. qtext

IP1: 203f (1659): Again, they excepted against him, that he did not teach is disciples to fast and pray, as John did, Luk 5:33, but could suffer them to transgress the traditions of the elders. Mat 15:2. He was not strict after the Jewish way of devotion, nor strict after John's neither; but against the traditions of the godly elders of the Jewish church; against sanctifying of the Lord's sabbath (justifying his disciples in plucking ears of corn thereon [Mat 12:1-8 | Mk 2:23-26 | Luk 6:1-5]; whereas their forefathers the Jews were not so much as to gather manna on that day [Exo 16:22-27]; against fasting and prayer; for he justified his disciples in that they did not fast and pray as John did, saying, how could they mourn while the bridegroom was with them? Mat 9:15. And consider which way the Jews (in the state they stood) could understand such an answer as this, to rest satisfied therewith.

JN2:256 (1655): And thou tells of the children of the bridechamber, cannot mourn while the bridegroom is with them [Mat 9:15 | Mar 2:19f | Luk 5:34f], and of putting people into a watching frame of spirit. I say, what bridegroom knows thou with thee, who deny the light of Christ and the infallible spirit in thee? And what spirit wilt thou watch withal; the lying spirit [1 Ki 22:22] never knew him nor must enter with him, but is shut out with the sorcerers and whoremongers.
IP3:40 (1667): Did not the bridegroom go away [Mat 9:15 | Mar 2:19f | Luk 5:34f], as to his appearance in flesh, that he might come again in Spirit? Did not the apostles, who knew his appearance in flesh, and his tabernacling among them, know also afterwards his appearnce in Spirit, and his tabernacling in them? And were not their hearts filled with joy unspeakable, and full of glory [1 Pet 1:8], because of the presence of the bridegroom?
HPS 427 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): And now it rises in me to write a word do comfort you, you friends of the Bridegroom [John 3:29], that mourn for his withdrawing [Mat 9:15 | Mar 2:19f | Luk 5:34f], and eat your bread with quaking, and drink your water with trembling [Ezek 12:18], as those who find no comfort till you do enjoy him. Wait without weariness, and you shall behold his countenance, and hear his pleasant voice, which will revive your spirits; but still be you mindful when you hear things unutterable [2 Cor 12:4], that you keep low and humble, and so shall you be kept from the snares of the Devil.

GF8:157f (1678): So ... they that are in old Adam are old creatures; and are in their old things, old ways, old worships, and old religions, and have the old garments [Mat 9:16], and the old bottles, that hold the old wine, and cannot endure the new [Mat 9:17]; and have the old, rusty, moth-eaten treasure [Mat 6:19]. And they that are in Christ, the heavenly and spiritual second Adam [1 Cor 15:45/47], who maketh all things new [Rev 21:5], are new creatures, and spiritual men, and are heavenly-minded [Rom 8:6?], and are new bottles, that hold the new wine and the new heavenly treasure [Mat 6:20], and have the new clothing, the fine linen, the righteousness of Christ [Rev 19:8], and are the new and living way [Heb 10:20], over all the dead ways.

GF8:153 (1678): And here is water in your own wells, that you may drink out of your own wells or cisterns [Prov 5:15], and to have grapes off their own vines, from which they may have the new wine in their new bottles [Mat 9:17], to glad and cheer their hearts with the wine from the heavenly branch of the heavenly vine, of which the Lord is the husbandman [John 15:1]; and this must every one of God's people feel.
IP3:473f (1671): Ah! many have had some touches of the light, some true appearances thereof, and tastes of the glory; but who hath been so united to the light, as to keep out of all that corrupteth? There is somewhat still lives near, that would fain be mixing with it.... It is better to know the old bottle emptied, yea, broken, than filled with new wine [Mat 9:17 | Mar 2:22 | Luk 5:37f]. WPR 508 (1693): If any say, that Christ commanded that [baptism or the Supper] should be done till he come [1 Cor 11:23-26]; they say that he that said so, told his disciples also, that he would come to them again [John 14:3; quotes Mat 16:28, John 14:17]; and that he would drink no more of the fruit of the vine, till he should drink it new with them in the Kingdom of God [Mat 26:29| Mar 14:25].
