MFS 66 (1666): [cites or quotes Luk 7:37-47, Mat 27:55, Mar 15:40f, Luk 23:28, Luk 8:1-3] Thus we see that Jesus owned the love and grace that appeared in women, and did not despise it: and by what is recorded in the scriptures, he received much love, kindness, compassion, and tender dealings toward him from women, as he did from any others, both in his lifetime, and also after [men] had exercised their cruelty upon him.
(Luk 8:3)
GF5:60 (1674): [quotes Luk 8:3] Now this scripture, which ye also bring, proves nothing for your forced maintenance, for what they did, they did it freely; for Christ never made a law to force people to give him and his disciples maintenance.

GF3:494 (1659): [Opponent calls Quakers "dumb devils" [Mat 12:22 | Luk 11:14]] And thus thou showest where thou art, who hast not known a time to be silent, before thou didst know a time to speak [Eccl 3:7]. And the dumb devil hath been found amongst yourselves, you priests; for when many of the Quakers have been moved of the Lord to come to speak to you in your pulpits, you have proved the dumb devils, turned your backs, and have gone your ways, and spoken never a word to them.
(Mat 12:24 | Mar 3:22 | Luk 11:15)
JN2:183f (1655): I say, for thy faith that believes the devil bred perfection, I know thou art of that faith that ever called Christ Beelzebub, and his works the devil's works [Mat 12:24 | Mar 3:22 | Luk 11:15], so in that faith I do not expect any other confession.
HPS 415f (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): ...this hath been a main argument, why people should not adventure themselves so much as to go to a Quakers meeting, for fear of the great danger that some suppose there is, of being charmed into that religion; ... which if they should receive, and walk herein, ... would certainly expose them to the world's hatred and scorn, which the servants and people of the Lord in all ages have borne: So that, for these to be accounted witches is no wonder, since the wicked have not spared to sling the same reflection upon their Lord and Master; Jesus Christ himself, when he was on earth, was censured to work his miracles by magic art; for when he cast a devil out of one present, some said, he did it by Beelzebub, their prince [Mat 12:24 | Mar 3:22 | Luk 11:15]....
(Mat 12:25f | Mar 3:23-26 | Luk 11:17f )
GF7:114 (1656): Friends and brethren, the eternal word, from which ye have both spoken and ministered to others, is the word of life [1 Jn 1:1], the word of peace, the word of reconciliation [2 Cor 5:19], which makes of twain one new man [Eph 2:15]; and if ye do abide there, there is no division but unity in the life which was before death was, and before division was. Therefore that which is divided is of the kingdom that cannot stand [Mat 12:25f | Mar 3:24], and is for condemnation by the life and word of reconciliation.
MFU 171 (1655): And that mind that looks outward [Eccl 12:3], from the measure enjoyed, and joins to anything without [1 Cor 16:16], contrary to the freedom of the Spirit within, that mind is for judgment, and the eternal Spirit of God is one in all [1 Cor 6:17]. And that which divides one from another, is for judgment; for where division is, that is of the kingdom that cannot stand [Mat 12:25f | | Mar 3:23-26]: so read where you are, for if you are in that which is divided, you cannot stand.
(Mat 12:26 | Mar 3:23f | Luk 11:18)
JN1:299 (Richard Farnworth, 1654): You that are baptized with water but want the gift of the Holy Ghost [Mat 3:16f]: how can you cast out and deliver up Satan? by what power do you do that? can Satan cast out Satan? Or a kingdom divided against itself, how can it stand [Mat 12:26]?
WPR 140 (1677): Be assured, my Friends, wherever the Lord hath begotten desires after him, and wherever sin is become exceeding sinful [Rom 7:13], yea, a burden to the soul, the devil's kingdom is shaken [Mat 12:26 | Mar 3:23f | Luk 11:18], the prince of this world is begun to be judged [John 16:11], and God is at work for the redemption of that soul.

GF3:445 (1659): The doctrine of perfection in the creature is Christ, who destroys the devil and his works [Heb 2:14/1 Jn 3:8], and binds the strong man, and spoils his goods, and takes possession of it to himself [Mat 12:29 | Mar 3:27], and the creature is a perfect creature, out of transgression. "He that is born of God doth not commit sin," seeing the seed of God remains in him [1 Jn 3:9]; and that is the doctrine of perfection in the creature.
WPR 305, WPT 89f (1674): In short, we call salvation, Christ's making an end of sin, destroying the works of the devil [1 Jn 3:8], finishing of transgression [Dan 9:24], binding the strong man and spoiling his goods [Mat 12:29] in the hearts and consciences of men and women; and bringing in his everlasting righteousness into the soul, whereby to cleanse, wash, regenerate, renew and refresh the soul; in one scripture-phrase, "to save his people from their SINS" [Mat 1:21].
JSS 67 (17–): ...he is wooing, overshadowing [Luke 1:35], and operating on us to bring forth in us that immortal birth, that babe of divine life, which, when brought forth, and increased in stature [Luke 2:52], would bind the strong man and cast him out, spoiling his goods [Mat 12:29], and slaying utterly the carnal mind, the enmity [Rom 8:7]...

GF4:257 (1660): Christ Jesus saith, "The strong man keeps his house, and all his goods are in peace [Luk 11:21f]; and now the strong man is got into the house, in the fall, since the beginning." And man is that house, and Christ is stronger than the strong man, and is come to cast him out, and spoil his goods; and this you must know before you come into the garden again; and before you know this, you must know trembling, and quaking, and your salvation wrought out with fear and trembling [Phil 2:12], which the apostle commands you; and then you will not despise Quakers and tremblers, but will receive them, and be with such who are in much fear and trembling at the word of the Lord [Isa 66:2].
IP1:79 (1658): Object. That it [obedience to the Light] breaks down relations, laws, governments; takes away due respect from magistracy and superiors, and turns the world upside-down [Acts 17:6]. Ans. Iniquity hath reigned, unrighteousness hath wound itself into, and twisted, every thing. And now the truth comes to discover and purge out the inquity; the strong man, who hitherto hath kept possession of the house [Luk 11:21], cries out, as if the destruction of the thing were aimed at. Nay, it is only the evil that is aimed at; but the thing itself is not to be destroyed, but to be set free from the evil, and preserved.
IP3:246f (1672): But the captivity of many hath been broken by the power of light, and the power and strength of darkness (inwardly) overturned by it. Oh, how hath the strong man, which kept the house, before the stronger than he appeared [Luk 11:21f] in the name and authority of the Father,– I say, how hath he trembled at the inward and spiritual appearance of him that was stronger than he! And how have the pillars of the old building been shaken! [Judg 16:25-30 / Job 9:6]
WPR 140 (1677): Yea, stronger is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. He is able to bind the strong man and cast him out [1 Jn 4:4 / Luk 11:21f]; do but believe truly in him, and cleave to him.
DFR 12f (17–): [The adversary] seemed to be continually present, whether I was awake or asleep, disquieting my mind as much as possible. But my prayer was incessant for divine aid; that a stronger than he might appear for my help, and dispossess him [Luk 11:21f]....At length, a stronger than he did indeed come, and cast him out, and wholly dispossessed him; and not only bruised him under foot [Rom 16:20], but removed him far from me.

GF7:173 (1659): by this law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus [Rom 8:2] ... ye come to know ... the fruitless trees [Jude 1:12] thrown down, and the plant of God raised up, which is of his own planting, the tree of righteousness [Isa 61:3], whose fruit is unto holiness, whose end is everlasting life [Rom 6:22]. So mark, here is the fruit of this tree, and the end of this tree, and by this spirit ye do distinguish names and plantings, and pluckings up; and God's building ye will distinguish from man's building [Heb 3:4]; and man's plucking down, and man's gathering together—ye that are gathered together in the name of Jesus [Mat 18:20], can distinguish men's gathering, and their scattering [Mat 12:30 | Luk 11:23]
MFU 171 (1655): Keep low in your measures of the living testimony which comes from the living God, which is one in all; in its measure, and there is no division, and no re nt, but all is one; and this gathers your hearts together, and this knits and unites into the body, where the unity is, and who gathers not here, scatters abroad; and he that is not with us here, is against us [Mat 12:30 | Luk 11:23]. So examine now, and try whether you are gathering now, or scattering abroad, with the Light which is eternal, which is one in all.
JN1:250 (1654): it will avail you but little to call yourselves gathered churches when you are not gathered into his will, but strive to uphold what he comes to cast down; for they that gather not with him, scatter abroad [Mat 12:30 | Luk 11:23].
HPS 49 (Sarah Blackborow, 1658): if any of the children of the Lord be moved to come into your steeple-houses to ask you a question, or to declare what they can witness of that which leads to Christ, how wrathful you are and impatient, and cry to the people, Carry them away, or suffer the people to hale them away without reproving them? this is far from the spirit that should be ready to give an answer to every one that asketh [1 Pet 3:15], or that which can bear all things [1 Cor 13:7], that spirit which is impatient and wrathful scatters and not gathers any to God [Mat 12:30 | Luk 11:23]; neither can it seek after that which is driven away and lost [Ezek 34:4]....

GFJN 21 (16–): A report went abroad of me, that I was a young man who had a discerning spirit; whereupon many came to me from far and near, professors, priests, and people. The Lord's power broke forth, and I had great openings and prophecies, and spoke unto them of the things of God, which they heard with attention and silence, and went away and spread the fame thereof. Then came the tempter and set upon me again, charging me, that I had sinned against the holy ghost [Mat 12:31f]; but I could not tell in what. Then Paul's condition came before me, how after he had been taken up into the third heavens, and seen things not lawful to be uttered, a messenger of satan was sent to buffet him [2 Cor 12:2-7]. Thus by the power of Christ I got over that temptation also.
GF6:53 (1679): And to kill blasphemers and sabbath-breakers, and to stone them to death, or put them to death with outward weapons about religion, is a work of the law, and not of the new covenant and new testament. For Christ, though his name was blasphemed, ... did not command, nor put any to death with carnal weapons. But Christ said, "They that blasphemed against the son of man, it might be forgiven; but they that did blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, were not to be forgiven, neither in this world, nor in the world to come [Mat 12:31f]"; which was punishment enough. And further, he said in the new covenant and his gospel-day, "He came not to destroy men's lives, but to save them" [Luk 9:56].
IP3:94 (1668): And though [Ludovik Muggleton] pretends that those whom he curses, have sinned the sin against the Holy Ghost [Mat 12:31f], and are devils; yet that is but the judgment of his spirit, not of God's Spirit; for they are in that which keeps from grieving God's Spirit [Eph 4:30]; much more from sinning the great and unpardonable sin against it.
SIW 65 (Catherine Payton Phillips, on her childhood, 17– ): Once, having yielded to temptation, my sense of guilt was such that I concluded I had sinned against the Holy Ghost; and that, agreeably to Christ’s testimony, I "should never be forgiven" [Mat 12:31f].
(Mar 3:29f)
JN2:147 (1655): Hadst thou said we had been railers, the sin had not been so great, but to say those words given forth by the Holy Ghost, as is plain in Scripture, are filthy railing words–here thou calls the Spirit filthy and unclean: but if thou read Mark 3:29-30, there thou mayest read thy blasphemy and what generation thou art of, and what shall befall thee.

RBA 451 (1678, XV.7): [on games, sports, comedies, and other vain recreations] ...if Christ's reasoning is to be heeded, that "the good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things"; and that of "every idle word we shall give an account in the day of judgment" [Mat 12:35f], it may easily be gathered from what treasure these inventions come, and it may easily be proved, that it is from the evil, and not the good. How many idle words do they necessarily produce? Yea what are comedies but a studied complex of idle and lying words? [more]

GF6:156 (1683): [quotes Mat 12:38-40] Here is a sign for the evil and adulterous generation, who rebel against the good spirit which God hath given to instruct them [Neh 9:20,26], that with his spirit they might see Christ the substance of all signs.

GF3: 406f (1659): They that had the scriptures knew not the Word; by signs and wonders they were declared, and signs and wonders were shown to them that had the scriptures, from the Word. IP4:43 (167-?): ...men ought to take heed how they expect or call for miracles now, as the Jews did to Christ for a sign of old [Mat 12:38f]; for that is not the temper of mind which this dispensation is to answer, but rather to draw men out from thence into a principle, into the new life and Spirit itself; where fuller demonstrations (of a deeper nature) are given to the soul, than outward miracles are. Feel the power that is revealed, feel the life that is made manifest, let in the light of day which shines; this will scatter the darkness from thee, and clear up the things of day unto thee. The pure ministration of power, the pure ministration of life, the light of the everlasting day, is come.

Men had dallied with the truth, taken up a form of godliness, and rejected the power [2 Tim 3:5]; therefore God withdraws from the form, and suffers the unclean spirit to enter it [Mat 12:43-45], and the uncircumcised nature of man to shelter itself there.

Mat 8:29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? [GBT: O Jesus...what have we...] art thou come hither to torment us before the time [T: +be come] ? qtext
Mat 8:30 And there was a good way [G: afar] off from them an herd of many [GT: a great herd of] swine feeding. qtext
Mat 8:31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away [G: omits; T: our way] into the herd of swine.
Mat 8:32 And he said unto them, Go [T: +your ways]. And when they were come out [G: So they went out; BT: Then went they out], they went [GBT: and departed] into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place [G: ran headlong; B: rushed headlong; T: was carried with violence headlong] into the sea, and perished [G: died] in the waters [GT: water] .
Mat 8:33 And they that kept them [GT: the herdmen] fled, and went their ways [G: when they were come] into the city, and told every thing [G: they told all things], and what was befallen to the [G: was become of them that were; B: was done of the; T: had fortuned unto the] possessed of the devils.
Mat 8:34 And, behold, the whole [GT: all the] city came out to meet [T: and met] Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would [GT: to] depart out of their coasts. qtext
Mar 5:1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
Mar 5:2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately [GT: omit] there met him [G: +incontinently] out of the tombs [GT: out of the graves; B: from among the tombs] a man with [G: which had; BT: possessed of] an unclean spirit,
Mar 5:3 Who had his dwelling [GBT: abiding] among the tombs [GT: graves] ; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: qtext
Mar 5:4 Because that he had been [GBT: when he was] often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken [GBT: he plucked the chains asunder, and brake the fetters] in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
Mar 5:5 And always, [GT: +both] night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying [GT: cried in the moutains, and in the graves], and cutting [G: struck; B: beating; T: beat] himself with stones.
Mar 5:6 But when he saw [BT: had spied] Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
Mar 5:7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou [GT: the] Son of the most high [BT: highest] God? I adjure thee by [G: will that thou swear to me by; BT: require thee in the name of] God, that thou torment me not.
Mar 5:8 For he [T: +had] said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean [BT: foul] spirit.
Mar 5:9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying [B: and said unto him], My name is Legion: for we are many. qtext
Mar 5:10 And he besought him much [GBT: prayed him instantly] that he would not send them away out of the country.
Mar 5:11 Now there was there nigh unto [G: in] the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. qtext
Mar 5:12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
Mar 5:13 And forthwith [G: incontinently; BT: anon] Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place [G: ran headlong from the high bank; B: ran headlong; T: startled and ran headlong] into the sea, (they [G: and there] were about two thousand [GT: +swine];) and were choked [G: choked up; BT: drowned] in the sea.
Mar 5:14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went [GT: came] out to see what it was that was done [B: was done; T: had happened].
Mar 5:15 And they come [GBT: came] to Jesus, and see [GBT: saw] him that was possessed [G: had been possessed; BT: was vexed] with the devil [BT: fiend], and had the legion, sitting, and [GBT: sit, both] clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. qtext
Mar 5:16 And they that saw it told them how it befell [G: what was done; B: hoew it came to pass; T: how it had happened] to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning [BT: of] the swine.
Mar 5:17 And they began to pray him to [GBT: that he would] depart out of [GT: from] their coasts. qtext
Mar 5:18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with [T: omits] the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
Mar 5:19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith [GBT: would not suffer him, but said] unto him, Go [G: +thy way] home [T: +into thine own house and] to thy friends, and tell [GBT: shew] them how [GT: what] great things the Lord hath done for [GT: unto] thee, and hath [GBT: how he (G: +hath] had compassion on thee.
Mar 5:20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis [BT: the ten cities] how [GT: what] great things Jesus had done for [GT: unto] him: and all men did marvel.
Luk 8:26 And they arrived at the country [GBT: sailed unto the region] of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.
Luk 8:27 And when [GT: as] he went forth [GBT: out] to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils [T: a devil] long time, and ware no clothes [G: garment], neither abode in any house, but in the tombs [GBT: in the (B: in; T: among) graves].
Luk 8:28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and [B: and had cried, he; T: he cried and] fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
Luk 8:29 (For [T: Then] he had [GBT: omit] commanded the unclean [GBT: foul] spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had [GB: he had; T: he] caught him: and [G: therefore] he was kept bound with chains and in [G: kept in; BT: kept with] fetters; and [G: but] he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil [BT: fiend] into the wilderness [G: wildernesses; BT: wilderness].)
Luk 8:30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. qtext
Luk 8:31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
Luk 8:32 And there was there [GT: +by] an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain [GBT: an hill]: and they [G: the devils] besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. qtext
Luk 8:33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place [G: was carried with violence from a steep down place; B: ran headlong with violence; T: took their course and read headlong] into the lake, and were choked.
Luk 8:34 When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and [GB: when they were departed, they; T omits]
told it in the city and in the country
Luk 8:35 Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. qtext
Luk 8:36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.
Luk 8:37 Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about [GBT: about (T: of) the Gadarenes] besought him to [GBT: that he would] depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went [BT: got him] up into the ship, and returned back again [G: omits].
Luk 8:38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,
Luk 8:39 Return [BT: Go home again] to thine own house, and shew how great things [GT: what great things; B: what things soever (2x) ] God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole [GBT: preached throughout all the] city how great things Jesus had done unto him.

WPR 138 (1677): The divine sense in the soul is begotten by the Lord. ‛Tis his Life and Spirit, his holy breath and power, that quickeneth the soul, and maketh it sensible of its own state, and of God's will; and that raiseth fervent desires in it to be eternally blessed. This is that which Satan rageth at; he feareth his Kingdom, he findeth that he is come that will cast him out of his possessions. He cryeth out, "Why art thou come to torment me before my time?" [Mat 8:28] He is the father of vain thoughts, he begetteth them in the mind, on purpose to draw the mind off from that sense....

JN2:210 (1655): And the light is in the world where all are sinners, but none have the life but who receive it, and are led out of the world by it; to such sheep Christ is keeper, who follow him out of uncleanness, and for such he is become an undertaker, the strong man to bind and cast out [Mat 12:29], who believe he will do it for them; but the swine he keeps not, the shepherd they will not follow, there the devil must enter and hath power, and into the sea must they run headlong [Mat 8:30-32 | Mar 5:11-13 | Luk 8:32f].
(Mat 8:34 | Mar 5:17)
IP1:380 (1660): He did not hold forth to them whatever he knew to be the truth, requiring them to believe it; but was content with them in their state, and waited till their capacities were enlarged, being still satisfied with the honesty and integrity of their hearts in their present state of weakness. Nor did he strive to reign over the world, or call for fire from heaven, when they would not receive him [Luk 9:54f], or express indignation when they desired him to depart out of their coasts [Mat 8:34 | Mar 5:17], or pray for twelve legions of angels when they came to betray him [Mat 26:53], and most unrighteously sought his life; but the life he had received of his Father he gave up as a ransom for his disciples, yea, and for his enemies [Mat 20:28].
(Mar 5:3)
JWJM 176 (1772): If one through the love of gain go forth into business wherein they dwell amongst the tombs [Mark 5:3], and touch the bodies of those who are dead, if these through the infinite love of God feel the power of the cross to crucify them to the world [Gal 6:14], and therein learn humbly to follow the divine leader, here is the judgment of this world–here the prince of this world is cast out [John 12:31].

JN2:241f (1655): Thou asks if that religion be of God which for the outward part consists in little else but "thou" and "thee".... Be ashamed of thy doctrine, who art come forth into the world to plead ... against the true language of the nation, brought forth only to honor the devil's pride, who is so exalted in men that he would have a better language than God, ... for God is one [Deut 6:4] in all his, but the devil is legions [Mar 5:9 | Luk 8:30]....

GF3:79 (1659): Again he saith, "Christ's kingdom is a hospital, and hath no subjects in it but diseased ones".... The diseased, or such as come unto Christ to be healed, he heals them of whatever infirmity soever it be, and cures them, and clothes them in the right miknd [Mar 5:15 | Luk 8:35]. Therefore thou art corrected, and worthy of correction; and all the diseased ones are in your kingdom, ye physicians of no value [Job 13:4].

Mat 9:28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men [GBT: omit] came to him: and Jesus saith [GT: said] unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
