8:1 [GT: +And] Jesus went unto the mount of Olives [BT: mount Olivet].

8:2 And early in the morning he [GT: omit] came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

8:3 And the scribes and [G: +the] Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had [GT: omit] set her in the midst,

8:4 They say [GT: And said; B: They said] unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, [GBT: +even] in the very act [BT: as the deed was a-doing].

8:5 Now Moses in the law commanded us [G: our law commanded], that such should be stoned: but [GT: omit] what sayest thou [GT: +therefore]?

8:6 [GT: +And] This they said, tempting [GBT: to tempt] him, that they might have to [GT: have whereof to; B: omits] accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not [GBT: omit].      qtext

8:7 So when [GT: And while] they continued asking him, he lifted up himself [GT: lift himself up], and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a [GBT: Let him that is among you without sin cast the first] stone at her.      qtext

8:8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

8:9 And they which heard it [GB: when they heard it (B: this); T: as soon as they heard that], being convicted by their own conscience, [GB: being accused by (B: of) their own conscience (B: consciences), they; T: they] went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last [T: the eldest first]: and [G: so] Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.      qtext

8:10 When Jesus had lifted [GBT: lift] up himself, and saw none [GBT: no man,] but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

8:11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her [GBT: omit], Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

GF3:582 (1659, from Samuel Fisher): Several scriptures corrupted by the translators [of the King James Version].... John 8:6.... as for the words "as though he heard them not", they are added by the translators, for there is nothing in the Greek for them.

IP2:406 (1663): The intent of God, in the salvation of man, is to magnify the riches of his grace [Eph 2:7], and the freeness of his love [Hos 14:4]. And this is effected, as man is broken in his natural principle and power of believing and obeying: and a seed of life freely raised up in him, and he freely gathered into it, and preserved in it. And where is the boaster here [Rom 3:27]? Or where is he, who, in this state, can throw a stone at another because of his transgressions [John 8:7]?

(John 8:9)

MFU 61f (1654): And if ever thou knows thy redeemer lives [Job 19:25], thou must turn to the light. Thou may say thou knows he lives, but I ask thee where he lives in thee, who denies the light.... For that witness of God [1 Jn 5:9f] in thy conscience (to which I write) shall eternally witness it to be true love to thy soul, whether thou hear or forbear [Ezek 2:7]. Consider the Pharisees were convicted in their own conscience and went out one by one when Christ Jesus (who said, "I am the light" [John 8:12]), spoke to them.

GF and others often combine John 8:12 with John 1:9, e.g."I am the light of the world, and I do enlighten everyone that comes into the world"

JN1:55 (1653): But where Christ is revealed and known he is known to be spiritual and not carnal, not limited to one place, but filleth heaven and earth [Jer 23:24], is all in and all his [Col 3:11]; but not seen by the carnal man, though he be the light of the world [John 8:12]; for the god of this world hath blinded the eyes of the world that they cannot see him [2 Cor 4:4]....

IP2:424 (1666): Man's knowledge of scriptures, the faith of man, through his own apprehensions, must fall, and man appear naked underneath, that the glorious righteousness of Christ in Spirit, and the precious covering thereof, may be magnified over all. And in this light of life [John 8:12], and newness of nature in Christ, runs the blood which cleanseth [1 Jn 1:7], and not elsewhere.

HPS 50 (Sarah Blackborow, 1658): Now all you who thirst after your beloved, come into Wisdom's house [Prov 9:1-6].... Oh, everyone that will, come; all people come to my beloved; come freely, you shall part with nothing for him that hath either price or value in it; therefore delay not but come to Christ Jesus who is the light of the world [John 8:12], his breathings are sweet & his shinings are pure....

HPS 205 (Katharine Evans, 1661): He alone is a full God unto us, and to all that can trust him [2 Sam 22:31 | Psa 18:30]; he hath emptied us of our selves, and hath wholly built us upon the sure foundation [Isa 28:16], the Rock of Ages [Isa 26:4n], Christ Jesus the light of the world [John 8:12], where the swelling seas [Psa 46:3], nor raging, foaming waves [Jude 1:13], nor stormy winds, though they beat vehemently , cannot be able to remove us [Luk 6:48]....

HPS 319 (Rebecca Travers, 1669): what would thy dark mind make the principle of light, that denies the Lord Christ, that saith, "I am the light of the world" [John 8:12]? Thou shewest thy ignorance of the mystery of faith which in the pure conscience is hid [1 Tim 3:21]; but whose conscience is defiled [Tit 1:15], and feared, hath no feeling of light nor faith, and so would blind the eyes of others, to lead captive as the devil doth [2 Tim 2:26] all that disobey the Light....

WPR 310, WPT 99 (1674): But indeed, this light is the savour of death [2 Cor 2:16] (the wages of sin [Rom 6:23]) to all that rebel against it, and the savour of life [2 Cor 2:16] to those only, who are obedient to it. For, such shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life [John 8:12].

DFR 20f (17–): It was Christ, the light of the world [John 8:12], the life of men [John 1:4], who opened to me the scriptures, and gave me a discerning of their meaning; and as I was faithful and obedient to the pointings of Truth, I was favored with further and clearer discoveries thereof.

But if people will despise the day of small things [Zech 4:10], and will not believe in this low appearance of the light of Jesus in their hearts; which though it discover to them their sins, and reproves for them [John 3:20]; yet because its reproofs are soft and mild, and its voice small and still [1 Ki 19:12], they out-clamour the sound thereof in their consciences, whereby they reject the Son of God (in Spirit) as the Jews did (in flesh) because he came to them in so mean a manner, they would not have him to be their saviour [cf Luk 19:14]: Will it not be just for Christ to say to these, as he did to them, "If ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins [John 8:24]; and then whither I go ye cannot come [John 8:21]."

GF4:161 (1658): And all you merchants whatsoever, and shop-keepers, take heed of cozening and cheating of people with your dark back-windows; for truth is risen, that will keep out all deceit; therefore be sober, and take it patiently, and live in it, for truth will make you free [John 8:32]; and if you will be made free by truth, give over your deceitful merchandize, and give over your many words, and keep to yea and nay [Mat 5:37]....

GF8:277f (1685): And so live and walk in the wisdom that is from above, that is heavenly, pure, peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated [Jas 3:17]. And keep in the lamb-like nature; for the suffering lamb must have the victory [Rev 17:14]. And so the man of God must not strive, but be gentle [2 Tim 2:24], and yet valiant for God's truth [Jer 9:3], and not to sell it [Prov 23:23]; for they that do, go into bondage and captivity; for the truth maketh all God's people free [John 8:32], and the peaceable truth is a peaceable habitation [Isa 32:18].

MFU 376f (1664): For to keep out of disobedience and transgression, and keeping the conscience clear, there is the spirit free; and there is dominion and power in the truth of the Lord Jesus Christ, over all the powers of darkness. For as you abide and continue in the truth, it will make you free [John 8:32], and whom the Son makes free, they are perfectly free indeed [John 8:36], though there may be outward bonds, or outward laws executed upon them; yet in the Lord they are free, and have peace and dominion in him.

IP4:290 (1675): The church is called into the liberty of the gospel, and her children are born of the word immortal [1 Pet 1:23], and of the truth which makes free [John 8:32]; and it is not the church's nature, either to receive or impose yokes of bondage, but to stand fast, and to exhort all her members to stand fast, in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made them free [Gal 5:1]. But where there is any thing unruly, or contrary to the power, that is to be yoked down by the power.

HPS 370 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): ... man must come to be freely willing to serve the Lord, and to take up the cross [Mat 16:24], and bear the yoke of his Son Christ Jesus [Mat 11:29], not only of necessity, but of a ready mind [1 Pet 5:2]: And thus now, to have the will sanctified, and brought into the pure obedience of him that sanctifieth it [Heb 2:11] (which is an effect of the free grace of God) here comes the true freedom of will to be known, even to be made free from sin [Rom 6:18], being delivered from the bondage of corruption, into the glorious liberty of the children of God [Rom 8:21].... And here, as the Truth maketh free [John 8:32], man comes to be free indeed [John 8:36], and to receive ability to attend upon the Lord without distraction [1 Cor 7:35]; and to do his will on earth as it is done in heaven [Mat 6:9f]....

GF3:510 (1659): Man's stability is Christ, the light, the life, the foundation of God that stands sure [2 Tim 2:19], the hope that remaineth in him, the faith given to him of God [Eph 2:8], in which the seed comes to be known in the male and in the female, the son of God who abideth in the house for ever [John 8:35], who is the heir of the promise; and there the unchangeableness of God is known, he that doth not change is seen, that has appeared, which cannot be shaken [Heb 12:27], that seeth an end of all changeable things, and variableness, and turnings [Jas 1:17]; and here the obedience is felt.

GF7:28 (1652): And wait all to have the son made manifest in you [2 Cor 4:10f], and the son alone to set you free in yourselves in particular; and all that are made free by the son, [John 8:36] are one. But the first nature, that would have liberty, must go into captivity; which they that live in their carnal reasoning, seek freedom for. But here is man deceived in his first birth.

IP1:245 (1659): they that never received the seed of life in their hearts, never received Christ; and such shall never be free from sin while they live; for having not received the Son, who makes free, how can they be free indeed [John 8:36]? Or be free from wrath when they are dead? For that faith concerning Christ will not save them hereafter, which did not bring them to receive Christ here.

GF3:125 (1659): P. He saith, "The devil speaks truth sometimes," &c. A. Christ saith, "He was a liar from the beginning; and when he speaks a lie, he speaks of himself [John 8:44]," and hath no truth in him; and so he cannot speak truth as it is in him [Eph 4:21]. And the greatest professors upon the earth are in the situation of the devil that speaketh the words of truth, but not as being in it, as Christ said to the Jews, "they were of their father the devil [John 8:44]," they spoke of themselves. So they that speak the scriptures but not by the spirit that they did that spake them forth [2 Pet 1:21], they speak of themselves, as the devil doth that abode not in the truth, "but was a liar from the beginning." And thus the truth comprehended it. For it is one thing to speak the truth in the truth, and to be in it (for he speaks not of himself [John 14:10], but the truth in him); but it is another thing to speak of themselves, and there thou art.

GF7:321 (1668): For they that are led by the spirit of God, are the sons of God [Rom 8:14]; they that are led by the spirit of the devil, are the children of the devil, and his works they do, the works of their father [John 8:44]; as they that are led by the spirit of God, his works they do, the works of their father....

WPR 139f (1677): But when this subtle enemy of man's salvation seeth that he cannot make you bow to the glory of this world [Mat 4:8-10], that all his snares that he layeth in the things that are seen, which are temporal, are discovered and broken; and that your eyes are directed to those things that are eternal, then will he turn accuser [Rev 12:10]. He will aggravate your sins, and plead the impossibility of their remission. He will seem to act the Advocate for the justice of God, that he might cast you into despondancy, that you may doubt of deliverance and salvation. Many are the thoughts, with which he perplexeth the sons and daughters of men: But this know, that he was a liar from the beginning [John 8:44]. For the Lord doth not visit the souls of any to destroy them, but to save them [Luk 9:56].

(John 8:46)

EQ 159 (Richard Hubberthorne, 1653/4): While I was young, I girded myself, and went whither I would [John 21:18], and then I yielded obedience to my own will and to the will of man, and was a manpleaser [Eph 6:6], but the will of God I knew not.... but when the Lord was pleased to reveal his son in me [Gal 1:15f], and make known his will unto me,... when his power was made manifest and his Word spoke within me, which Word was in my heart [Deut 30:14], and was as a fire or a hammer [Jer 23:29]; and this Word being made manifest within me, and my conscience being awakened by the Light of God, which did convince me of sin [John 8:46], and did testify against all my words and actions, that the just judgments of God were revealed from heaven against that nature I lived in [Rom 1:18], and the trumpet of the Lord was sounded within me, and the vials of the wrath of the Almighty were poured down upon me [Rev 16:1],... the foundation of wisdom and earthly knowledge was shaken.

GF5:209 (1675): Did not Christ say to the Jews, "he that is of God heareth God’s words; ye therefore, hear them not, because you are not of God [John 8:47]"? Now, might not the Jews say to Christ, as the professors will now say to us, do not we read the law and the prophets every sabbath-day in our synagogues and temple? And are not they the word of God? But may not Christ answer you again, and say unto you, that you have not the same spiritual ear as his prophets and apostles had, to hear God’s words; but those ears of yours are stopped like the pharisees’, scribes’, and high priests’, and Jews’, who had outward ears and eyes, but heard not, nor saw they Christ [Jer 5:21], wanting the spiritual?

IP3:193 (1668): "If a man keep my sayings," saith Christ, "he shall never see death [John 8:51]." "If ye," saith the apostle, "through the Spirit, mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live [Rom 8:13]." But if the deeds of the body be not mortified by the Spirit, if a man do not keep the sayings of Christ, doth he, or can he, live then? Is not this then the main thing in religion, that a man receive the truth in the faith, and that he feel the power of the Spirit of life bringing him into and keeping him in the obedience thereof?

(John 8:53)

JSS 65 (17–): [objection:] Surely God does not beget Christ in every true Christian; this would be making every such equal with the man Christ Jesus. JSS 64 (17): He testified, that "Abraham saw his day," [John 8:56] which they disbelieving, and thinking that he had involved himself in an inextricable dilemma, replied, "Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?" [John 8:57] And many professed Christians think to this day, that Abraham only saw his day afar off, and then, a great while after, to commence. But that was not our blessed Lord’s meaning; his answer to their cavil, points directly at another thing: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, before Abraham was, I am." [John 8:58] He does not say, I was before Abraham, but "I am." For he is the life of God’s people through all time; and as such, Abraham truly saw his day, and rejoiced in it. It was his life.

IP2:273 (1662): Quest. What other way of dispensing the light of life [John 8:12] hath there been? Ans. That of the promise to the fathers, which was before the law, wherein they saw the day of the Messiah, and were glad [John 8:56]. This was a glorious dispensation, in which they tasted the Sonship; and felt power to walk with God, and faith to trust him in his leadings, and were translated by him (in a sweet and precious degree) into the measure of his life, which made them pilgrims and strangers in this world, and steered their spirits towards another country [Heb 11:13f].

HPS 330f (Rebecca Travers, 1669): All that believe in the Light know the day of his begetting. Abraham saw it, and was glad [John 8:56]. David saw it, and testified of it houndreds of years before the Virgin's conception at Jerusalem [Psa 2:7]. Nay, it is the blasphemer in thee that cannot own the voice of Christ, for if anything of Christ speak in man it was before corrupt reason was....

(John 8:59)

GF3:515 (1659): P. "If they had christian zeal they would stone them whom they call Quakers." A. It is the blind zeal that stones, not the zeal of the christian, that has the life of Christ; for the christian zeal is to pray for them that persecute, Mat 5:44, and not to stone them; and to love enemies. It was the Jews' zeal that took up stones to stone Christ, John 8:59, they stoned Stephen, Acts 7:58, and stoned the apostles, Acts 14:19. In this the Presbyterians have proved their christianity to be out of Christ and the apostles.

9:18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, [G: him; B: the man, how; T: of the fellow how] that he had been [T: was] blind, and received his sight, until they [T: +had] called the parents [BT: father and mother] of him that had received his [GT: omit] sight.

9:19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who [GBT: whom] ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see [GBT: doth he now see then]?

9:20 His parents [BT: father and mother] answered them and said, We know [T: wot well] that this is our son, and that he was born blind:

9:21 But by what means he now seeth, [B: +that] we know not [BT: cannot tell]; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not [GT: can we not tell; B: cannot we tell]: he is of age [GBT: old enough]; ask him: he shall speak [G: he shall answer; BT: let him answer] for himself.

9:22 These words spake his parents [BT: father and mother], because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed [G: odained; B: decreed; T: conspired] already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put [GBT: excommunicate] out of the synagogue.      qtext

9:23 Therefore said his parents [BT: father and mother], He is of age [GBT: old enough]; ask him.

9:24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise [G: glory unto God] : we know that this man is a sinner.

9:25 [G: +Then] He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not [GBT: cannot tell]: one thing I know [BT: am sure of], that, whereas [GT: omit] I was blind, [GT: +and] now I see.

9:26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

9:27 He answered them, I have [BT: omit] told you already [BT: erewhile], and ye did not hear [G: have not heard it]: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?

9:28 Then they reviled [G: reviled they; BT: (be)rated they] him, and said, Thou art [GB: Be thou] his disciple; but [GBT: omit] we are [GT: be] Moses' disciples.

9:29 We know [BT: are sure] that God spake unto [GT: with] Moses: as for [G: but; T omits] this fellow [G: man], we know not from whence he is.      qtext

9:30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein [G: Doubtless, this; BT: this] is a marvellous thing, that ye know [T: wot] not from [GT: omit] whence he is, and yet [T: seeing] he hath opened mine eyes.      qtext

9:31 Now we know [BT: For we be sure] that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth [B: obedient unto; T: do] his will, him he heareth [GBT: heareth he].      qtext

9:32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

9:33 If this man were not of God, he could do [GBT: have done] nothing.

9:34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast [GBT: art] altogether born in sins [BT: sin], and dost thou teach us? And [G: so] they cast him out.

9:35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out [BT: excommunicate him]; and when [T: as soon as] he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on [G: in] the Son of God?

9:36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on [G: in] him?

9:37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both [G: Both thou hast; T: Thou hast] seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

9:38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he [GT: omit] worshipped him.

9:39 And Jesus said [B: unto him], For judgment I am come [GBT: I am come unto judgment] into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.      qtext

9:40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also [T: then blind]?

9:41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no [G: not have] sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

(John 9:22)

GF6:269f (1684): And the Jews, which were the greatest outward professors, agreed, " that if any man did confess that he was the Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue." John 9:22. [quotes John 12:42] So here were them that did believe, both rulers and others, in Christ; but they were afraid to confess Christ lest they should be excommunicated or put out of their synagogue. [Quotes Mat 10:32f] So here you may see, that they that do confess Christ before men, are confessed by him before his Father; and they that deny him before men, Christ will deny before his Father.

(John 9:29)

IP2:261 (1661): The great glory of God is hid in a little seed; and how can the great eye of the fleshly-wise see it? We have Moses and the prophets (said the Jews after the flesh), but as for this man, we know not whence he is [John 9:29]. Even so it is now: we know the relation which the Scriptures have given of Christ by the apostles, we are sure this is of God, say the professors; but as for this little seed of the kingdom [Mat 13:31], or light of God in the heart [2 Cor 4:6], we cannot believe that all we want is to spring up in us.

(John 9:30)

IP3:338 (1674): "Why, herein is a marvellous thing" said the blind man "that ye know not whence he is, and yet he hath opened my eyes [John 9:30 (text: 9:10)]." He who hath the power, and putteth forth the power inwardly; who openeth the inward eye, the inward ear, looseth the inward tongue, causeth the inward feet to walk in the way of life, and the inward hands to work the works of God [John 6:28],— he is the Messiah, The Saviour, the Word of life [1 Jn 1:1], the Son of the living God [Mat 16:16, John 6:69].

(John 9:31)

TEM 13 (16–): The young man stood in the aisle before the pulpit all the time of the sermon, not speaking a word till the sermon and prayer after it was ended, and then spake a few orwords to the priest. Of which all that I could hear was, "That the prayer of the wicked is abomination to the Lord [Prov 15:8], and that God heareth not sinners [John 9:31]." Somewhat more, I think, he did say, which I could not distinctly hear for the noise the people made; and more probably he would have said, had he not been interrupted by the officers, who took him into custody, and led him out....
