A key to Biblical allusions in early Quaker writings and early Quaker uses of Biblical phrases
10:1 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a [GBT: the] rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were [G: omits] the sun, and his feet as [B: +it were; T: +that were] pillars of fire:
10:2 And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set [GBT: Put] his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,
10:3 And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered [T: spake] their voices. qtext
10:4 And when the seven thunders had uttered [T: spoken] their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered [T: spake], and write them not. qtext
10:5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,
10:6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever [GBT: evermore], who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, [T: omits] and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer [G: time should be no more]:
10:7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound [G: blow the trumpet; BT: blow], [GBT: +even] the mystery of God should [GBT: shall] be finished, as he hath declared to [B: declared to; T: preached by] his servants the prophets.
10:8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth.
10:9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.
10:10 And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as [G: but when] I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.
10:11 And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples [GBT: among the people], and nations, and tongues, and [GBT: +to many] kings.

GF7:98 (1655): All Friends, in the spirit of the living God wait upon God, to learn of and to be taught by him. For now doth the beast open his mouth in blasphemy [Rev 13:6], speaking great swelling words [2 Pet 2:18, Jude 1:16]. And now is the cage of unclean birds, and the unclean spirits [Rev 18:2], which are gone forth into the earth [Mat 12:43?], seen. And now are the locusts seen [Rev 9:3], and the caterpillars [Psa 78:46] known. And now are the seven thunders [Rev 10:3] uttering their voices. And now are the hailstones falling [Rev 16:21], and the vials of the wrath of God [Rev 16:1] pouring out upon the beast and the false prophet.

JN1:83 (1653): ...these many hundred years have the dark ministry reigned; but now the God of power is uttering his thunders [Rev 10:3f] and making his power known, and the eternal word of God is made manifest in us....
EQ 174 (Francis Howgill, 165-): And all that ever I had done was judged and condemned, all things were accursed; whether I did eat, drink, or restrain, I was accursed. Then the lion suffered hunger [Psa 34:10], and the seals were opened, and the seven thunders uttered their voices [Rev 10:3f]. My eyes were dim with crying, my flesh did fail of fatness [Psa 109:24], my bones were dried [Ezek 37:11] and my sinews shrunk. I became a proverb to all [Psa 69:11]....
11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying [T: it was said unto me], Rise, and measure [GBT: mete] the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. qtext

11:5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth [BT: shall proceed] out of their mouth [GBT: mouths], and devoureth [BT: consume] their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner [GBT: thus (BT: this wise) must he] be killed.

They are kept safe, as in the hollow of his hand.

IP1:347 (1660): For, Rev 11:1-2 there was a measuring of the building which God's own spirit had built, part whereof was reserved for God, part given to the Gentiles, or uncircumcised in heart...; That which God reserved for himself was "the altar, the temple, the worshippers within"; all these are inward. The outward court was given to the Gentiles ...; and this they get and cry up, and tread underfoot the holy city, trampling upon the inward and undervaluing it. Christ within, the spirit within, the law within, the power within, becomes a reproach; and this they have power to do, even to keep down the inward, and cry up the outward, all the time of the forty-two months....

MFU 78 (1654) [identifies the pope and the Catholic Church with the dragon, quoting Rev 12:3-5] But thy crowns is falling and thy power is limited ... and the dragon is coming to be chained [Rev 20:1f], and the man child is brought forth, and is caught up to God, & to his throne; who doth rule the nations with a rod of iron, and doth dash to pieces [Psa 2:9] thee and all thy power.

IP4:350 (167-?): ...this seed felt springing up in the heart, and joined to, brings down and keeps down all that is contrary to God.... Yea, the devil, the great red dragon [Rev 12:3], the god of the world [2 Cor 4:4], the mighty spirit and power of darkness, being resisted in this, is still overcome.
(Rev12:3f)
GF6:449 (168-?): And John said, "There appeared a wonder in heaven, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his head," [Rev 12:3] the old serpent, the devil, and satan [Rev 12:9]. Was not this a proud devil? And his tail drew the third part of the stars from heaven (had not these been some stars in the earth?) and cast them to the earth [Rev 12:4]. These stars were lights in the night [Gen 1:16-18]; but he was cast out of heaven, and persecuted the woman the true church [Rev 12:13], which had the moon under her feet [Rev 12:1].

IP1:252 (1659): Now mark: he that calls anything the church, but what this book calls the church, he adds [Rev 22:18]; he that doth not know the wilderness, and own the church in the wilderness [Rev 12:6], he diminishes [Rev 22:19]. The church of Rome [Scotland, England] is not the church in the wilderness; the several gathered churches are none of them the church in the wilderness; all these have sprung up since the church's flight, and have appeared in her absence, usurping her name, and appropriating it to themselves; but God, who gave it to the church, hath not given it to them; and so they must lose it again, when God brings back the church out of the wilderness.
WPR 572/WPT 351 (1694): Now it was, that the true church fled into the wilderness [Rev 12:6], that is, from superstition and violence to a retired, solitary and lonely state; hidden, and as it were, out of sight of men, though not out of the world.... In this state many attempts she made to return, but the waters were yet too high [Rev 12:15], and her way blocked up, and many of her excellent children, in several nations and centuries, fell by the cruelty of superstition, because they would not fall from their faithfulness to the Truth.

IP2:121 (1660): That there was a fight between the dragon and his angels, and Michael and his angels, concerning the New-Testament church and ministry, is manifest even from the letter of the Scriptures, Rev 12[:7-9]. That the dragon and his angels, though they could not get the better, as relating to the power, yet that they did get the better, as relating to the form, insomuch as that they overcame the third part of the true ministers [Rev 12:4], and drew them from their standing in the firmament of God's power [Psa 150:1], off to their earthly ministry; and that the church herself also was fain to fly into the wilderness, from the face of the dragon, for her safety and preservation, where she was to be nourished and fed by God all the time of antichrist's reign [Rev 12:6, 14]; this likewise is not only revealed from the Spirit, but it is also manifest from the letter.
