GF5:25 (1674): "as a company of thieves wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the way by consent, for their work is mischief [Hos 6:9G]." Was not this so in Hosea's days? And was it not so in the days of Christ against him? and is it not so now? Read in Mat 27:1 how early they got up in the morning to work mischief, for when morning was come they rose up together, the chief priests and elders to take counsel together to put Christ to death; and hath not this spirit and practice been found amongst ye priests and professors now a-days against Christ's followers?

(Mat 27:3-5)

HPS 176 (Katharine Evans & Sarah Chevers, prisoners of the Inquisition, 1662): After the Consul came with tears in his eyes, and said he was as sorry as for his own flesh; but there was some hopes in time; and so he went away, but never had peace while he lived. He would have given up the thirty pieces of silver again, but it would not be received [Mat 27:3-5]; the Witness was risen much in him, but slavish fear possessed him.

(Mat 27:4)

GF5:207f (1675): consider Christ's words to Saul, while he was persecuting him, he "kicked against that which pricked him [Acts 9:5],"... whilst he persecuted Christ in his members; so see if you can tell, what it was he kicked against? and what that was that made Judas confess he had sinned in betraying the innocent blood [Mat 27:4]? was it not that which condemned him [John 3:19f], that will make every tongue to confess [Phil 2:11]?

(Mat 27:5)

GFJN 46 (16–): Then I asked them, seeing Judas, who betrayed Christ and was called the son of perdition [John 17:12], had hanged himself [Mat 27:5], what son of perdition was that which Paul spoke of, that sat in the temple of God, exalted above all that is called God [2 Th 2:3f], and what temple of God that was in which this son of perdition sat, and whether he that betrays Christ within, in himself, be not one in nature with that Judas that betrayed Christ without.

(Mat 27:8)

GF4:243 (1660): Your field has been a field of blood [Mat 27:8], and the righteous blood lies among you, the field of the persecutors upon the earthh, transgressors, destroyers, the earth the field, the world the field of blood, where all the blood of the righteous lies, and it is required of you [Luk 11:50f], the righteous blood that has been shed since the days of the apostles by you [Mat 23:35], the witness in all your consciences [Rom 2:15] shall answer it.

§143C-G (Mat 27:11-14 | Mar 15:2-5 | Luk 23:2-12)

Mat 27:11 And Jesus stood before the governor [BT: deputy (2x)]: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest [G: +it].

Mat 27:12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.      qtext

Mat 27:13 Then said [B: saith] Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things [B: witnesses] they witness [GBT: lay] against thee?

Mat 27:14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor [BT: deputy] marvelled greatly.

Mar 15:2 And [G: Then] Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said [GBT: answered and] unto him, Thou sayest it.

Mar 15:3 And the chief [GBT: high] priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing [GBT omit ].      qtext

Mar 15:4 And [GT: Wherefore; B: So] Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee [T: lay unto thy charge].

Mar 15:5 But Jesus yet [G: But Jesus; BT: Jesus yet] answered nothing [G: no more at all; T: never a word]; so that Pilate marvelled.

Luk 23:2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow [G: man] perverting the nation [BT: people], and forbidding to give [GBT: pay] tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself [GBT omit] is Christ a King.      qtext

Luk 23:3 And Pilate asked [BT: apposed] him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

Luk 23:4 Then said Pilate to the chief [GBT: high] priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

Luk 23:5 And [G: But] they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up [GBT: moveth] the people, teaching throughout all Jewry [G: Judea], beginning [BT: and began] from Galilee [GBT: at Galilee, even] to this place.

Luk 23:6 When Pilate heard [BT: +mention] of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean [BT: of Galilee].

Luk 23:7 And as soon as [G: when] he knew that he belonged unto [GT: was of] Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was [GBT: which was also] at Jerusalem at that time [GT: in those days].

Luk 23:8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped [GT: trusted; B: he trusted] to have seen some miracle [G: sign] done by him.

Luk 23:9 Then he questioned with him in many words [GT: of many things]; but he answered him nothing.

Luk 23:10 And the chief [GBT: The high] priests [G: +also] and scribes stood [GBT: +forth] and vehemently accused him [GBT: accused him vehemently (BT: straitly)].

Luk 23:11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought [GBT: despised him], and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe [GBT: white (B: +clothing)] , and sent him again to Pilate.

Luk 23:12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves [G: enemies one to another; BT: at variance].      qtext

JN1:56 (1653): And they know... that he is but one in all from the beginning to this day, and changes not [Heb 13:8]; and that the serpent is but one in all his, though of divers colors and forms, and therefore at wars, disputes and janglings among themselves, and at envy one with another; only they are one in this, that they all join to persecute the pure seed [Gen 3:15] in any where it appears [mar: Luk 23:12].

§143H-K (Mat 27:15-23 | Mar 15:6-14 | Luk 23:13-23)

Mat 27:15 Now at that feast the governor [BT: deputy] was wont to release [GBT: deliver] unto the people a prisoner, whom they would [BT: +desire] .

Mat 27:16 And they [BT: He] had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

Mat 27:17 Therefore [G: omits; T: And] when they [G: +then] were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release [GBT: Whether will ye that I let (BT: give) loose] unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?

Mat 27:18 For he knew [GT: +well] that for envy they had delivered him.

Mat 27:19 When he was set down on the judgment seat [BT: to give judgment] , his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of [G: by reason of; T: about] him.      qtext

Mat 27:20 But the chief priests and elders [GT: +had] persuaded the multitude [GBT: people] that they should ask Barabbas, and [GT: +should] destroy Jesus.      qtext

Mat 27:21 The governor [GBT: deputy] answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release [GBT: let loose] unto you? They said, Barabbas.      qtext

Mat 27:22 Pilate saith [GBT: said] unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.

Mat 27:23 And [GT: Then said] the governor [BT: deputy] said [GT: omit], Why [G: But; BT: omit], what evil hath he done? But they cried out [GBT: omit] the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

Mar 15:6 Now [BT omit] at that [G: the] feast he released [GBT: did (T: was wont to) deliver] unto them one prisoner [G: a prisoner unto them; BT: unto them (T: at their pleasure) a prisoner], whomsoever they desired [GBT: would desire].

Mar 15:7 And [G: Then] there was one [B: +that was] named Barabbas, which lay [G: was] bound with them [G: his fellows] that had made insurrection with him, who [G: who; B: which men; T: and] had committed murder [B: +also] in the insurrection.

Mar 15:8 And the multitude [GBT: people] crying aloud [G: cried aloud, and; T: called unto him and] began to desire him to do [G: that he would do; B: him that he would do according; T: according] as he had ever done unto them.

Mar 15:9 But [G: Then; BT omit] Pilate answered them, saying [GT: and said], Will ye that I release [GB: let loose; T: loose] unto you the King of the Jews?

Mar 15:10 For he knew that the chief [GBT: high] priests had delivered him for envy.

Mar 15:11 But the chief [GBT: high] priests [GT: +had] moved the people, that he should [G: to desire that he would] rather release [GBT: deliver] Barabbas unto them.      qtext

Mar 15:12 And Pilate answered and said again [BT: again and said] unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto [GT: do with; B: do unto] him whom ye call the King of the Jews?      qtext

Mar 15:13 And they cried out again, Crucify him.

Mar 15:14 Then [BT omit] Pilate said unto them, Why, [G: but; BT omit] what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly [GBT: the more fervently], Crucify him.

Luk 23:13 And [G: Then] Pilate, when he had [GBT omit] called together the chief [GBT: high] priests and the rulers and the people,

Luk 23:14 [GBT: +and] Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth [GT: perverted] the people: and, behold, I, having examined [GT: I have examined; B: I examined] him before you, [GBT: +and] have found [B: find] no fault in this man touching [GBT: of] those things whereof ye accuse him:

Luk 23:15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto [G: of; BT: to] him.

Luk 23:16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him [GBT: let him loose].

Luk 23:17 (For of necessity he must release one [GBT: have let one loose] unto them at the feast.)

Luk 23:18 And [G: Then] they cried out all [GBT: all the multitude (BT: people) cried] at once, saying, Away with this man, and release [GBT: him, and deliver] unto us Barabbas:

Luk 23:19 (Who for a certain sedition [GBT: Which for a certain insurrection] made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

Luk 23:20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them [GBT: Then (BT omit) Pilate spake again to them, willing to let Jesus loose).      qtext

Luk 23:21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.      qtext

Luk 23:22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, [G: But; BT omit] what evil hath he done? I have found [GBT: find] no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise [BT: chasten] him, and let him go [GT: loose].

Luk 23:23 And they were instant [T: cried] with loud voices [T: voice (2x)], requiring [GT: and required] that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief [GBT: high] priests prevailed.

[Other texts citing Mat 27:20: JN1:88 (under Mat 26:3f)]

GF3:544f (1659): And did not the priests stir up the rulers and magistrates to persecute? though they themselves did not often do it, who had not the power, but they stirred up the magistrates to do it. And they came to be their slaughterers, to execute their malice, and be their executioners. Ye do not, ye may say, it is the magistrates that ye stir up to do it. It is not said, the priests did slay and crucify Christ, but Pilate; but the priests had power amongst the multitude to persuade the multitude to ask the murderer [Mat 27:20] (who had murder in their hearts), and Pilate did the thing [Mat 27:26].

JN1:396 (John Audland, 1654): the Lord is against you, who instead of executing justice upon them who live in wickedness, which your streets abound with [Psa 55:11], you draw your sword to punish them and to prison them who are sent of the Lord to cry against these abominations; you choose Barabbas and crucify Jesus [Mat 27:21-23 ||]; you prison the saints of the most high [Dan 7:18] God for speaking the word of the Lord, which you shall eternally witness whether you hear or forbear [Ezek 2:7], the word of the Lord shall stand and must not return in vain [Jer 50:9].

(Luk 23:21)

GF5:202 (1675): But as the Jews persecuted him, and cried, "Crucify him, crucify him [Luk 23:21]," in the flesh; so you professors of Christ in the flesh, persecute Christ in the spirit, in his light, and in his life, who cannot reach to crudify him in his flesh any more, but to yourselves [Heb 6:6] and in his members.

§143L-N (Mat 27:24-31 | Mar 15:15-20 | Luk 23:24-25)

Mat 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail [G: availed] nothing, but that rather a tumult [G: more tumult; BT: more busyness] was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude [BT: people], saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person [G: man]: see ye to it [G: Look you to it; T: and that ye shall see].      qtext

Mat 27:25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

Mat 27:26 Then released he Barabbas [GNT: let he Barabbas loose] unto them: and when he had [GBT: omit] scourged Jesus, he [GBT: and] delivered him to be crucified.      qtext

Mat 27:27 Then the soldiers of the governor [BT: deputy] took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto [G: about] him the whole band [BT: all the band (T: company)] of soldiers [GT: omit].

Mat 27:28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet [T: purple] robe.      qtext

Mat 27:29 And when they had [GBT: omit] platted a crown of thorns, they [GBT: and] put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee [GT: their knees] before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail [G: God save thee], King of the Jews!

Mat 27:30 And they spit [GT: they spitted; B: when they had spit] upon him, and [B: they] took the reed, and smote him on the head.

Mat 27:31 And after that [GT: when] they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him [BT: +again] , and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

Mar 15:15 And [G omits] so Pilate, willing to content the people, released [GT: loosed them; B: let loose] Barabbas unto them [GT omit], and delivered [B: +up] Jesus, when he had scourged him, to [G: that he might; BT: for to] be crucified.      qtext

Mar 15:16 And [G: Then] the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium [G: hall, which is the common hall; T: common hall]; and they call [GBT: called] together the whole band [B: +of soldiers; T: multitude].

Mar 15:17 And they clothed [G: clad] him with purple, and [BT: +they] platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head [BT: crowned him withal],      qtext

EQ 112 (James Nayler, 1658): Do you suffer with him herein, who have a heart consenting to these things, if not a hand deeply in them; secret or open, either in this cruelty acting or contriving, or in cursed and scornful speeches condemning them that bear witness, as a foolish ignorant people, and that they bring their sufferings upon themselves, by their own wills. So shoot your poisoned arrows one way or other against that spirit which leads, and has ever led such as do not resist and disobey him, into the same testimony, and so in secret you become worse than open persecutors. Or it maybe some few become as far as Pilate, who washed his own hands [Mat 27:24], while others shed the innocent blood; and these are few indeed, who thus far will openly confess the just and innocent Lord before his accusers, in what soever vessel he is thus honored.

HPS 175 (Katharine Evans and Sarah Chevers, prisoners of the Inquisition, 1662): The Consul did affirm to us the night before, that there was no such thing (as to ensnare us) intended; but it was in us as fire, and our souls were heavy even unto death; for many days before we saw in a vision of our going there (to prison), and we said Pilate would do the Jews a pleasure, and wash his hands in innocency [Mat 27:24].

§144B-E (Luk 23:26-43)

Luk 23:26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon [GBT: caught] one Simon, a Cyrenian [GBT: of Cyrene], coming out of the country [GBT: field], and on him they laid the cross, that he might [GT: to] bear it after Jesus.

Luk 23:27 And there followed him a great company [G: multitude] of people, and of women, which also [GT: women; B omits] bewailed and lamented him.

Luk 23:28 But Jesus turning unto them [GBT: turned back unto them and] said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.      qtext

Luk 23:29 For, behold, the days are coming [GBT: will come], in the which they [GT: when men] shall say, Blessed [BT: Happy] are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

Luk 23:30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. qtext

Luk 23:31 For if they do these things [T: this] in [GT: to (2x)] a green tree, what shall be done in the dry? qtext

[GM: As if he said, "If they do this to me who is always fruitful and flourishing, and who lives forever by reason of my Godhead, what will they do to you who are unfruitful and void of all active righteousness?"]

Luk 23:32 And there were also two other, malefactors [G: two others, which were evil doers; BT: two evil doers] led with him to be put to death [GBT: slain].

Luk 23:33 And when [B: after that] they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors [GBT: evil doers], one on [G: at (2x)] the right hand, and the other on the left.

Luk 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know [ BT: wot] not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. qtext

Luk 23:35 And the people stood beholding [GBT: and beheld]. And the rulers also with them derided him [GBT: mocked him with them], saying, He saved [T: holp] others [BG: other men]; let him save [T: help] himself, if he be [G: +that; B: +very] Christ, the chosen of God.

Luk 23:36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering [GBT: and came and offered (T: gave)] him vinegar,

Luk 23:37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

Luk 23:38 And a [T: his] superscription also was [G: was also; BT: was] written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and [G: in Greek letters, and in Latin, and in; B: with letters.... T: in Greek, in Latin and] Hebrew, THIS IS THE [G: THAT] KING OF THE JEWS. qtext

Luk 23:39 And one of the malefactors [GBT: evil doers] which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be [G: +that] Christ, save thyself and us.

Luk 23:40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear [GB: Fearest thou not; T: Neither fearest thou] God, seeing [T: because] thou art in the same condemnation [BT: damnation]? qtext

Luk 23:41 And we indeed justly [G: We are indeed righteously here; BT: We are righteously punished]; for we receive the due reward of our deeds [G: things worthy of that we have done; BT: according to our deeds]: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

Luk 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

GF3:7f (Edward Burrough, 1659): For ye have not caused them to hear his word, but you have told your dreams, and your false visions [Jer 14:14], and ... therefore people are not profited [Jer 23:32]. What they and you know, it is naturally [Jude 1:10], and not by the spirit of the Father; but as dry trees you are [Luk 23:31 GM?], not taught of the Father, and as rough goats....

GF8:141 (1677): And Christ is called the green tree [Luke 23:31 GM], which green tree never withers [Psa 1:2], into whom they are grafted [Rom 11:24] by belief in the light, which is the life in him, from whom they all receive their heavenly living nourishment, through which every graft is nourished; then it comes to bud and bring forth fruit [John 15:5] to the praise of the eternal God.

HPS 232 (Mary Penington, 1682): Another striking instance is that of my certainly blessed husband, whose mind was constantly with the Lord in his last illness; yet, when the last breath was breathing out, his groans were dreadful. I may call them roarings, as it seemed to be, through the disquiet of his soul at that moment. Indeed, this hard passage of his hath so deeply affected me, that I have often since said: "If it be thus with the green tree, how will it be with me, who am to him but as a dry tree [Luk 23:31]."

MFU 287 (1665, on the Conventicle Act): And so this generation now forbids to meet and worship in the name and power of our lord Jesus Christ, to which name every knee must bow [Phil 2:10], and confess to him, though they now strive and contend against his word and work, which he is working and bringing to pass in this his day, but they know not what they do [Luk 23:34], for persecution was always blind....

IP2:173 (Opening of Concerning Persecution, 1661): Because men generally, in persecuting, know not what they do (neither whom it is they persecute, now how they sin against God therein, nor what danger they are exposing themselves to, and what misery they are drawing upon themselves thereby, both in this world and for ever), even as Christ said concering the Jews, who were persecuting him even to death, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do [Luk 23:34]; and afterward to Saul; "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" [Acts 9:4] Therefore, in love to those who are at unawares running into this great error, that they may find the good hand of God stopping them therein for their own good, are these things following concerning persecution written....

EQ 403 (George Fox "the Younger," letter to Charles II, 1660/1): Vengeance is the Lord's and he will repay it [Rom 12:19]. Therefore wherein thy enemies went beyond their commission against thy father, or any that took his part, leave that unto the Lord .... And consider how far Christ was from seeking or desiring revenge, when they murdered him as concerning the flesh, who said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do [Luk 23:34]." Oh, mind that spirit, and consider he was greater than thy father, and he was free from all transgression.

(Luk 23:38)

GF3:138 (1659): And Luke saith the tongues of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, were set up over Christ by Pilate who crucified him [Luk 23:38]. And John saith the beast had power over all tongues [Rev 13:7], and that the whore sits upon the tongues, and that the tongues are waters [Rev 17:15]. What! hath the beast sat upon our tongues? upon our orthodox men, our schools, and colleges? and doth the whore sit on our tongues, upon the original, ... and are these set above Christ?

(Luk 23:40-43)

RBA 119 (1678, V/VI.12): by this day and time of visitation which, we say, God gives unto all, during which they may be saved, we do not understand the whole time of every man's life; though to some it may be extended even to the very hour of death; as we see in the example of the thief converted upon the cross [Luk 23:40-43]; but such a season at least as sufficiently exonerateth God of every man's condemnation, which to some may be sooner, and to others later, according as the Lord in his wisdom sees meet.

WPR 462f (1678): I will conclude this with that famous instance of the thief upon the cross who neither knew nor had time to make a large confession, like the creeds of these days; but it seems he said enough [quotes Luk 23:42f]. By which it is easy to learn, that 'twas the heart not the mouth, the sincerity not the words, that made the confession valid.

(Luk 23:43)

GF5:446 (1678): And did not Christ say to the believing thief, "This day thou shalt be with me in paradise" [Luk 23:43]? and you will belie the scriptures, if you say, that it was a purgatory. And Christ saith, that "he purgeth" every branch that beareth fruit, that it may bring forth more ruit; and that branch which doth not bear fruit, he takes it away [John 15:2]; so Christ is the purger. And he said to his disciples, that they were clean through his word [John 15:3]; so not through a purgatory, after they were dead.

GF8:236 (1683): Now there is a common saying among the Turks to the Christians, "Your crucified God," meaning Christ. Now this is their mistake; though God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself [2 Cor 5:19], it was not the eternal God that died, and was crucified, that was in Christ; for Christ said, when he was about to suffer, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? [Mat 27:46]" So Christ suffered in the flesh [1 Pet 4:1], and died, and was crucified, as he was man, not as he was God, the word, which was in the beginning [John 1:1]; but as he was man, who bore the sins and iniquities of all mankind, and was an offering for the sins of the whole world [1 Jn 2:2], who through death tasted death for every man [Heb 2:9]; all being in death in Adam [1 Cor 15:22].

WDS 266f (1688): The Son of God, when he was come to the depth of his sufferings, what was his cry, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" [Mat 27:46] This was for thy sake, and my sake, and every man's and woman's sake that do believe in him; he drank the cup which his Father gave him to drink [John 18:11]. I it was done thus to the green tree, what shall be done to the dry? [Luk 23:31]

(Mat 27:50)

HPS 232 (Mary Penington, 1682): Death hath many times been presented to me, which I have rather embraced than shrunk from; for the most part finding a kind of yielding up in my spirit to die, like as it is said: "He yielded up the ghost" [Mat 27:50].... there remaineth still a deep sense of the passage from time to eternity, how strait, hard, and difficult it is; and even many times to those on whom the second death hath no power [Rev 20:6], yet subjected to such feelings as were our dear Lord's and Saviour's, when in agony he cried out; "My God! my God! why hast thou forsaken me!" HPS 507 (Katharine Whitton, 1681): for every thing [the enemy] will have a covering like Truth, that he may keep his interest in the hearts of men and women, which is the principal part: But ... the true Light now shineth that discovers him in every action, not one corner he can shelter in where he is not seen, his coverings are all too narrow [Isa 28:20], the vail which he hath spread over him and his actions, must by the Power of the Lord which is risen, and rising in the bosoms of a remnant, be rent in twain from the top to the bottom [Mat 27:51]....

(Mat 27:52)

GFJN 122 ([1652]): I heard of a great meeting of priests at Ulverston ... When the priest had done I spoke amongst them the word of the Lord, which was as a hammer and a fire amongst them [Jer 23:29].... and the mighty power and dread of the Lord God came over all, that answered the witness in many [1 Jn 5:9f]; and the graves opened [Mat 27:52] and the dead heard the voice of God [Jn 5:25].

Mat 27:61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

Mat 27:62 Now the next day, that followed [T: followeth] the day of the preparation [G: the Preparation of the Sabbath; B: the day of preparing; T: Good Friday], the chief [GBT: high] priests and Pharisees came together unto [G: assembled to; T: got themselves to] Pilate,

Mat 27:63 Saying [GT: And said] , Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After [G: Within] three days I will rise again [G: rise; BT: arise again].

Mat 27:64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest [T: +peradventure] his disciples come by night [T: omits], and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

Mat 27:65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way [GT: omit], make it as sure as ye can.

Mat 27:66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch [GBT: with the watch (T: watchmen), and sealed the stone].

Mar 15:42 And now when the even [G: the night; T: night] was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day [G: the day of the preparation that is; B: the day of preparation that goeth; T: the even that goeth] before the sabbath,      qtext

Mar 15:43 Joseph of [B: +the city of] Arimathaea, an honourable [BT: a noble] counsellor, which also waited [GBT: looked] for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved [G: asked; B: begged of him; T: begged] the body of Jesus.

Mar 15:44 And Pilate marvelled if he were [BT: that he was] already dead: and calling [GBT: called] unto him the centurion, he asked him [GBT: and asked of him] whether he had been any while dead.

Mar 15:45 And when he knew it [GBT: the truth] of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

Mar 15:46 And he [GBT: Who] bought fine linen [GBT: a linen cloth], and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen [GBT: +cloth], and laid him in a sepulchre [GT: tomb] which [GBT: that] was hewn out of a [BT: the] rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.      qtext

Mar 15:47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses [G: Joses mother; BT: Joses] beheld where he was [G: should be] laid.

Luk 23:50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was [G: which was a counsellor,] a good man, and a just:

Luk 23:51 (The same had not consented [GT: He (T: and) did not consent] to the counsel and deed of them;) he [GVT: which] was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself [BT: which same also] waited for the kingdom of God.

Luk 23:52 This man [GBT: He] went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

Luk 23:53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen [GBT: a linen cloth], and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone [G: a tomb hewn out of a rock; T: an hewn tomg], wherein never man before was [GT: was never man yet (T: before)] laid.      qtext

Luk 23:54 And that day was the preparation [B: preparing of the Sabbath; T: Sabbath even], and the sabbath drew on.      qtext

§§147-148 (Mat 28:1-15 | Mar 16:1-8 | Luk 24:1-3)

Mat 28:1 In the end of the sabbath [B: In the later end of the Sabbath day; T: The Sabbath day at even], as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came [G: when the first day of the week began to dawn; B which dawneth the first day of the week, came; T: which dawneth the morrow after the Sabbath] Mary Magdalene and the other Mary [GT: +came] to see the sepulchre.      qtext

Mat 28:2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.      qtext

Mat 28:3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

Mat 28:4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake [GBT: were astonied], and became as dead men.

Mat 28:5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye [GBT: ye not]: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

Mat 28:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay [GT: was laid; T: was put].

Mat 28:7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen [B: +again] from the dead [T: death]; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.      qtext

Mat 28:8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

Mat 28:9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus [G: +also] met them, saying, All hail [G: God save you]. And they came and held [G: took] him by the feet, and worshipped him.

Mat 28:10 Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

Mat 28:11 Now when they were going [GBT: gone], behold, some of the watch [T: keepers] came into the city, and shewed unto the chief [GBT: high] priests all the things that were done [T: happened].      qtext

Mat 28:12 And when they were assembled [GBT: they gathered them together] with the elders, and had taken counsel, they [GBT: took counsel, and] gave large money unto the soldiers,

Mat 28:13 Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we [BT: ye] slept.

Mat 28:14 And if this [G: +matter] come to the governor's ears [G: before the governor to be heard; BT: to the deputy’s (T: ruler’s) ears] , we will persuade [T: pease] him, and secure you [G: so use the matter that you shall not need to care; BT: save you harmless].

Mat 28:15 So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported [GBT: noised] among the Jews until this day.

Mar 16:1 And when the sabbath [GBT: +day] was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James [B: Jacobi], and Salome, had [GBT omit] bought sweet spices [G: sweet ointments; B: sweet smelling ointments; T: odours], that they might come and anoint him.

Mar 16:2 And very [G: Therefore BT: And ] early in the morning the first day of the week [B: the first day of the Sabbaths; T: the next day after the Sabbath day], they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun [GBT: when the sun was (G: +now) risen].      qtext

Mar 16:3 And they said among themselves [GT: one to another], Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?      qtext

Mar 16:4 And when they looked, they saw [BT: +how] that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great [GBT: a very great one].

Mar 16:5 And [G: So] entering [GBT: they went] into the sepulchre, they [GBT: and] saw a young man sitting on [G: at] the right side, clothed in a long white garment [G: robe]; and they were affrighted [G: sore troubled; B: amazed; T: abashed] .

Mar 16:6 And he saith [GT: But (T: And) he said] unto them, Be not affrighted [G: so troubled; B: amazed; T: afraid]: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was [G: hath been] crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid [GT: put; B: had put] him.

Mar 16:7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that [T: namely Peter: ] he goeth [GT: will go] before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

Mar 16:8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

Luk 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices [GT: odours; B: sweet odours] and ointments; and [BT: but] rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

Luk 24:1 Now upon the first day of the week [B: But upon the first day of the Sabbaths; T: On the morrow after the Sabbath] , very [GT omit] early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre [T: tomb], bringing the spices [GBT: and brought the (B +sweet) odours] which they had prepared, and certain others [G: certain women; BT: other women] with them.      qtext

Luk 24:2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.      qtext

§147D-I (Mar 16:9-11 | Luk 24:4-12)

Mar 16:9 Now [G: And BT omit] when Jesus was risen [G: +again] early the first day of the week [BT: early, the first day (T: the morrow) after the Sabbath], he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

Mar 16:10 And she went and told them that had been [BT: were] with him, as they [G: which] mourned and wept.

Mar 16:11 And they, [GBT omit] when they had heard that he was alive, and [T: +he] had been seen of [GT: appeared to] her, believed [GBT: they (B omits) believed it] not.

Luk 24:4 And it came to pass [T: happened], as they were much perplexed thereabout [GBT: amazed thereat], behold, two men stood by them in shining garments [GT: vestures]:

Luk 24:5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living [G: him that liveth] among the dead?      qtext

Luk 24:6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet [T: +with you] in Galilee,

Luk 24:7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

Luk 24:8 And they remembered his words,

Luk 24:9 And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest [GBT: remnant].

Luk 24:10 [G: +Now] It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women [BT: Jacobi and other] that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.      qtext

Luk 24:11 And [G: But] their words seemed to them as idle tales [G: as a feigned thing; BT: feigned things], and they believed them not [GBT: neither believed they them].

Luk 24:12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld [GBT: looked (T: stooped) in and saw] the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass [T: had happened].

[Other texts citing Luk 24:5: MFU 217 (John 12:35)]

GF4:229 (1660): And now this is the day of the Lamb's power [Psa 110:3], and in this day of his power is the gospel going forth to all nations, kindreds, and tongues, and people [Rev 14:6], that they may be ruled as with a rod of iron [Rev 12:5]; for they have been waters corrupt and drunken, corrupted with idols, images, relics, running to graves, seeking the living among the dead, which had a check by the angel to them that did so [quotes Luk 24:5], ... the life is risen, and many sit with him in heavenly places [Eph 2:6]....

RBA 407 (1678, XIII.11): For we certainly know that the day is dawned, in which God hath arisen and hath dismissed all those ceremonies and rites, and is only to be worshipped in Spirit [John 4:23f], and that he appears to them who wait upon him, and that to seek God in these things is, with Mary at the sepulchre, to seek the living among the dead [Luk 24:5], for we know that he is risen and revealed in Spirit, leading his children out of these rudiments [Col 2:8,20], that they may walk with him in his Light....

SIW 132 (Mary Alexander, 179-): ...we met with a larger proportion of religious, seeking minds [in Wales], than in most of the counties we visited in England. Yet many even of these, we often had to fear, were too much seeking the living among the dead [Luk 24:5]; not enough inward in their search after durable riches [Prov 8:18]; nor enough acquainted with the one essential baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire [Mat 3:11f]; which, if suffered to operate, would consume all that is of an unsubstantial nature.

(Luk 24:10f)

GF8:108 (1676): And here was a joyful women's meeting indeed, of messengers and preachers of Christ's resurrection, which is recorded to posterity to their renown, that all should believe; though their message and speech were as idle tales to the disciples [Luk 24:10f]; but they were owned by Christ the head of the church, as aforesaid, though their preaching was slighted by the apostles, and counted as idle tales; but they came to believe afterwards, as in Luke xxiv.

WTG 48 (Susanna Morris, 1725): my hint seemed to be (I thought) like idle tales to the Friend, somewhat like Christ’s Resurrection when only the tidings were brought to the disciples by the woman [Luk 24:10f].

§149 (Mar 16:12 | Luk 24:13-32)

Mar 16:12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them [GBT: unto two of them in another form (T: a strange figure)], as they walked, and went into the country.      qtext

Luk 24:13 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village [GBT: town] called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

Luk 24:14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened [GB: that were done].

Luk 24:15 And it came to pass [T: chanced], that, while [GT: as] they communed together and reasoned, [GT: +that] Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

Luk 24:16 But their eyes were holden that they should [GT: could] not know him.

Luk 24:17 And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

Luk 24:18 And the one of them, whose name was [G: named; T: of them named] Cleopas, answering [GBT: answered and] said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass [T: have chanced] there [GBT: therein] in these days?

Luk 24:19 And he said unto them [T: To whome he said], What things? And they said unto him, Concerning [GBT: Of] Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the [G omits] people:

Luk 24:20 And how the chief [GBT: high] priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.      qtext

Luk 24:21 But we trusted that it had [T: should have] been he which should have redeemed [GT: that should have delivered] Israel: and beside all this [GBT: as touching all these things], to day is the third day since these things [GBT: that they] were done.

Luk 24:22 Yea, and certain women also of our company [G: among us] made us astonished, which were early at [GBT: came early unto] the sepulchre;

Luk 24:23 And when they [BT omit] found not his body, they [BT: and] came, saying, that they had also [BT omit] seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

Luk 24:24 And [G: Therefore] certain of them which were with us went [T: +their way] to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

Luk 24:25 Then [BT: And] he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:      qtext

Luk 24:26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

Luk 24:27 And beginning [GBT: he began] at Moses and [GT: +at] all the prophets, he expounded [GBT: and interpreted] unto them in all the Scriptures the things [BT: Scriptures] concerning himself [GBT: which were written of him].

Luk 24:28 And they drew nigh [G: near] unto the village, whither they went [GNT: town which they went to]: and [G: but] he made as though he would have gone further.

Luk 24:29 But [B: And] they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is [BT draweth] toward evening [GBT: night] , and the day is far spent [BT: passed]. And [G: So] he went in to tarry with them.      qtext

Luk 24:30 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat [G: table] with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave [G: blessed, and brake it, and gave it] to them.

Luk 24:31 And [G: Then] their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight [G: was no more seen of them].

Luk 24:32 And they said one to another [GBT: between themselves], Did not our heart [GBT: hearts] burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he [G: when he; B omits; T: as he] opened to us the scriptures?

(Luk 24:45)

JN2:456 (1655): the disciples themselves, though they had the Scriptures and the book of the creation and had been with Christ many years, yet could not understand the Scriptures till by his Spirit he lightened their understandings, as is plain (Luke 24:25), and this was after his resurrection also; and if all these came short till inspired with the Spirit and enlightened, and if all that are unlearned and unstablished with that Spirit wrest all Scriptures to their own destruction [2 Pet 3:16], then it is plain that neither Scripture nor creation can be rightly used without the Light of Christ....

(Luk 24:47)

IP3:280 (1674): Now the things of the kingdom are all at the disposal of the king thereof. To him all power is given [Mat 28:18], in him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge [Col 2:3]; he hath life in himself [John 5:26], and he hath life to dispose of, and dispense to his. He gives the true knowledge, which is life eternal [John 17:3]; he gives repentance, and remission of sins [Luk 24:47]. He teacheth to believe in the Father, and he giveth faith also.

(Luk 24:48)

GF5:190 (1675): [discussing 1 Jn 5:12]: Now who follow the apostles in the succession and ordination, are faithful witnesses; and in Luke 24:48, Christ says to his disciples, "ye are witnesses of these things;" and Acts 1:8, "But ye shall receive power after the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witness unto me in all Judea, and Jerusalem, and Samaria, and to the utmost parts of the earth." Now mark, these were the faithful and true witnesses in the power of the Holy Ghost.... nor can any succeed the apostles and be true witnesses, but in the same power and Holy Ghost....

(Luk 24:49)

GF4:306 (1667): Christ said to his disciples, "that they should wait together at Jerusalem, and not depart [Acts 1:4];" and they did meet together, and you know that their meetings were different from the Jews and heathen; and they were to wait together at Jerusalem until they received power from on high [Luk 24:49], before they were to go to gather the churches; and this was according to the wisdom of God; which if the Jews had spoken to them that they should not meet, do you think the disciples would have obeyed them, or the command of Christ?

GF8:291 (1680): And every one of you to be indued with wisdom from on high [Luke 24:49], which is pure and peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, and full of mercy and good works [Jas 3:17]; let the fruits of this appear among you all, and then you will all be gentle and easily entreated one of another.

IP2:114 (1660): The disciples which had known Christ, and had been taught by him, and had received a commission from him, to whom all power in heaven and earth was given [Mat 28:18], yet were to wait for a further and higher state, even for receiving "the promise of the Father, the power from on high [Acts 1:4/Luk 24:49]," that he that was with them might be in them. John 14:17.

IP3:130 (1668): Did not Christ, when he sent out his disciples to preach in his name, give them of his Spirit and power? And afterwards, when he was to go away, and they to succeed him, what were they to succeed him in? Were they not to succeed him in his Spirit and power? And did not he bid them wait for it, and receive it [Luk 24:49], before they went forth to preach and set up his kingdom? And was it not the church was gathered? And can the church be preserved by any thing beneath this? Yea, falling short of this, is it not in a degenerated and fallen estate?

[Other texts citing Mar 16:15: MFU 222 (Rom 1:14)]

GF5:172 (1675): These did not reason, "what shall I do with my wife and children, or how shall I do for a maintenance?" when Christ commanded them to go and teach all nations [Mat 28:19]; here was the love of God and Christ to all the world: and again, Christ said unto his disciples, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature [Mar 16:15];" ... here Christ makes no sects, nor leaves out some part of the world; but as he tasted death for every man [Heb 2:9], and was an offering for the sins of the whole world [1 Jn 2:2], so he sent his disciples, which he ordained to preach the gospel, into all nations [Mat 24:14]; and he saith, "lo I am with you always, even to the end of the world [Mat 28:20]....

IP3:145 (1668): God hath sent his gospel to be preached to every creature [Mar 16:15], and his Word is able to reach the witness [1 Jn 5:9f], and work sense in every creature; and in whomsoever there is a sense wrought, the listening to God in that sense, he works faith in them; and waiting on the Word, hearkening of the Word, and staying their minds there through on the Lord [Isa 26:3], he will speak peace to them [Psa 85:8], and keep them in peace [Isa 26:3], daily removing them more and more out of the reach and power of that which troubleth them.

(Mar 16:16)

IP1:39 (1658): The true ground of hope is Christ in the heart; ... "Christ in you the hope of glory [Col 1:27]." What is the true Christian's hope? It is Christ in him; he "hath eternal life abiding in him [1 Jn 3:15]"; and he knows that cannot but lead to glory. But what is the common Christian's hope? He fastens his hope upon the relation and his belif of an history. "He that believeth shall be saved [Mar 16:16]." I believe; therefore I shall be saved.– And thus, as he hath got up a wrong faith, and a wrong love, so he gets up a wrong hope. And this hope will perish; for it is the hope of the hypocrite [Job 8:13], or an hope of the hypocritical nature, which complies with scripture words. It is not in union with God, nor witih the life of the scriptures; and so being without the anchor [Heb 6:19], is tossed in the waves of the sea.

IP3:194f (1668): Did not the message which Christ sent his apostles to preach, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved [Mar 16:16], contain the sum of the covenant? What doth God require of the soul, but believing in his Son (which includes repentance from the dead spirit and works [Heb 6:1]), and receiving his baptism? To be baptized into him, into his death, into his life [Rom 6:3f], into his nature, into his Spirit; to take up his cross [Mat 16:24], to bear his yoke [Mat 11:29]....

(Mar 16:17)

GF4:285 (1661): they that came to drink of the spiritual rock, Christ (1 Cor 10:4), and receive the spiritual gift from God, and are zealous for them [1 Cor 14:12], they come to the spiritual body [1 Cor 15:44], and to be blessed with spiritual blessings [Eph 1:3], and to speak to one another with new tongues [Mar 16:17], and filled with the spirit of understanding [Isa 11:2]....

IPL 22f (16–): Our worship is a deep exercise of our spirits before the Lord, which doth not consist in an exercising the natural part or natural mind, whether to hear or speak words, or in praying according to what we of ourselves can apprehend or comprehend concerning our needs; but we wait, in silence of the fleshly part [Zech 2:13], to hear with the new ear what God shall please to speak inwardly in our own hearts, or outwardly through others, who speak with the new tongue [Mar 16:17], which he unlooseth, and teacheth to speak....

HPS 402 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): notwithstanding any outward benefit or privilege they may providentially be deprived of, yet is the Lord so gracious as to dispense such a measure of his grace, power, and Spirit unto all the children of men, to convince them of sin, to reprove them for it, and to lead them out of it, that as they give up to the operation thereof in themselves, it will thoroughly sanctify and make them clean, and so prepare them, and make them meet for his heavenly Kingdom; yea, though they never had the Scriptures amongst them, nor never heard Christ outwardly named to them (the name of Christ being often put for the power of Christ within) as in Mark 16:17.

MFU 230 (1657?): the Quaker is subject to the higher power: which is ordered of God [Rom 13:1], the gospel which is the power of God unto salvation [Rom 1:16]: [quotes 2 Cor 4:6], and this is the power which we reverence, and to him all power in heaven and earth is committed [Mat 28:18], & this is he that binds and chains [text: cleans] the pope's power and thy power, and all the power of darkness [Col 1:13]. This power chains [text: cleans] the dragon, the old serpent which is called the Devil [Rev 20:2], & in this power of Jesus Christ we are more than conquerors [Rom 8:37], and triumphs over all the powers of hell.

IP3:515 (1676): But that the work of regeneration is only begun in this life, and not finished till the other life, that is a great mistake. For the Scriptures testify, that salvation is to be wrought out here [Phil 2:12], and not hereafter. Christ had all power in heaven and earth [Mat 28:18], and he sent forth his Spirit and power to work out the work here; and his sanctifying Spirit and power is able to sanctify throughout, in soul, body, and spirit [1 Th 5:23]; and the gifts of the ministry are for perfecting the saints, till they all come in the unity of the faith, unto a perfect man [Eph 4:12f], that they may be presented to God perfect in Christ Jesus [Col 1:28].

JSS 36 (17–): There is a time and season for all things [Eccl 3:1], and if thou abidest in the patience, and touchest him not [John 20:17], thou shalt see and know all power, both in heaven and earth, committed unto him [Mat 28:18] , though he has only been under tutors [Gal 4:2]

(Mat 28:19)

GFJN 550 (1669): You say God hath ordained the greatest part of men for Hell, and they were ordained so before the world began, and your proof is in Jude [1:4], and you say Esaw was reprobate and the Egyptians and the stock of Ham. Now Christ saith to his disciples, Go, and teach all nations [Mat 28:19] and go into all nations to preach the gospel. Now, were they not to go to Ham's stock and Esau's stock? For did not Christ die for all the stock of Esau and Egypt and Ham? And God would have all men to be saved [1 Tim 2:4], mark, all men, then the stock of Esau and of Ham also.

GF3: 501f (1659): The word three persons is the natural Popish conceit, which is out of thy father the pope's canon-books, where thou hast learned it. But Father, son, and holy ghost, that is sound scripture [Mat 28:19]; but thou canst not take it as it speaks, but thou must add three persons to it, so brings the plague on thee [Rev 22:18].

IP4:132f (1671): Obj. 4. The baptism in this commission [Mat 28:19] cannot be the baptism of the Spirit, because it is to be administered in the name of the Spirit. Ans. The Greek word is not ἑν, which signifieth in; but ἑις, which signifies into; so that the baptism here commanded is to baptize into the name, into the Father's name, into the Son's name, into the Spirit's name, by turning them from darkness to light, from the power of Satan to God [Acts 26:18]; and then the power and life of God's Holy Spirit comes over their hearts and minds, and breaketh the power of Satan, and washes their consciences from that which is dead [Heb 9:14], and plungeth or dippeth them into that which is living.

RBA 363f (1678, XII.8): as to what Christ saith in commanding them to "baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Spirit [Mat 28:19]," ... the Greek is ἑις τὁ ὂνομα, that is, "into the name"; now the name of the Lord is often taken in Scripture for something else than a bare sound of words or literal expression, even for his virtue and power [cites Psa 54:1, Song 1:3, Prov 18:10].... Now that the apostles were, by their ministry, to baptize the nations into this Name, Virtue and Power, and that they did so, is evident ... where [Paul] saith, "as many of them as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ" [Gal 3:27]; this must have been a baptizing into the Name, i.e. Power and Virtue, and not mere formal expression of words adjoined with water-baptism....

GF3:498f (1659): We do believe such apostate ministers from the doctrine of Christ and his apostles as you are, who have thrown aside the doctrine of Christ, and trampled it under your feet, and set up yourselves in great benefices, who live in a town, and do not go up and down to eat and drink such things as are set down before them [Luk 10:7]; but how are you then those that Christ said he would be with to the end of the world? and how do you then observe all things athat he hath commanded [Mat 28:20]?

GF7:40 (1653): And if any be moved (who are turned to the light [Acts 26:18]) with the power which comes from him, to any service for the Lord, to it be obedient; and ye will see Christ with you to the end of the world [Mat 28:20]. But if any go, before they are moved, and so from the light walk, he is a stumbling block, and is to be judged and condemned by the light [John 3:19f]; and is out of the wisdom, and out of the fear, and soweth to the flesh, and reaps corruption [Gal 6:8], and by the light is condemned. For that answereth not the light in every man's conscience, neither doth it reach to the life, the spirit in prison [1Pet 3:19]; but it manifesteth weakness, and foolishness, and nakedness, which is from the light, and contrary to it. And such are stumbling blocks, and do not answer the witness of God in the conscience [Col 4:6/Rom 2:15/1Jn 5:9f].

JN1:174 (1653): And will you be found at that day subjects in the kingdom of Christ, wherein all the saints are one, and Christ their head and lawgiver? Or are you not lords over God's heritage [1 Pet 5:3]; yea, over Christ himself? and you will appear such when the mystery of iniquity shall be revealed in you [2 Th 2:7f]; you who ought to make it your whole care to observe the law of christ in all things that he commands [Mat 28:20], as a rule for you to walk by.

RBA 31 (1678, II.6): Of this revelation of Christ in him Paul speaketh (Gal 1:16), in which he placeth the excellency of his ministry, and the certainty of his calling. And the promise of Christ to his disciples, "Lo, I am with you to the end of the world [Mat 28:20]," confirmeth this same thing; for this is an inward presence, and spiritual, as all acknowledge....

WPR 156f (1677): He that is with you, shall be in you [John 14:17]. This was the hope of their glory [Col 1:27], the foundation of their building, which standeth sure [2 Tim 2:19]. And though sorrow cometh over night, yet joy shall come in the morning [Psa 30:5]. Ye shall weep and lament, saith Jesus, but the world shall rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy [John 16:20], and their rejoicing into howling. And lo I am with you to the end of the world [Mat 28:20]. Be ye therefore encouraged in the holy way of the Lord; wait diligently for his daily manifestations unto your souls, that you may be strengthened in your inward man [2 Cor 4:16], with might and power, and do the will of God on earth, as it is done in heaven [Mat 6:10].

WPR 589, WPT 383 (1694): in these solemn assemblies, for the Church's service, there is no one presides among them after the manner of the assemblies of other people; Christ only being their President, as he is pleased to appear in life and wisdom in any one or more of them, to whom, whatever be their capacity or degree, the rest adhere with a firm unity, not of authority but conviction, which is the divine authority and way of Christ's power and Spirit in his people: Making good his blessed promise, that he would be in the midst of his, where and whenever they were met in his name [Mat 18:20], even to the end of the world [Mat 28:20].
