JN1:219 (1654): Canst thou prove in all scripture that God commanded any of his to salute any by the way? ... Christ saith, "Salute no man by the way." [Luk 10:4] The prophet [Elisha] saith, "Salute no man by the way, and if any salute you answer him not again." [2 Ki 4:29].

WPR 625 (1696): We dare not give worldly honour, or use the frequent and modish salutations of the times, seeing plainly, that vanity, pride, and ostentation belong to them. GF3:10 (Edward Burrough, 1659): You disagree with and are contrary altogether to the true ministry, and to the apostles, in respect to your maintenance and wages; for the wages which Christ allowed his ministers, was, into whatever house they entered, that was worthy, they might eat such things as are set before them, for the workman (saith he) is worthy of his hire [Luk 10:7 | Mat 10:10b].

JWJM 177 (1772): The natural mind is active about the things of this life, and in this natural activity business is proposed and a will in us to go forward in it. And as long as this natural will remains unsubjected, so long there remains an obstruction against the clearness of divine light operating in us; but when we love God with all our heart and all our strength, then in this love we love our neighbors as ourselves [Luk 10:27], and a tenderness of heart is felt toward all people, even such who as to outward circumstances may be to us as the Jews were to the Samaritans. Who is my neighbor? See this question answered by our Saviour [Luk 10:29-35].

DQC1 (Robert Barclay, Truth Trimphant [1831], 1:93, 16–): Those that suffer their zeal to flame so inordinately, as to burn up all appearances of love and tenderness to those, that are not of the same judgment and interest ... This spirit destroys instead of informing: Christ's spirit entreats, informs, and finally saves both body and soul. People tinctured with this religious (or rather irreligious) venom, are the worse for their religion; their natures are more soured, their dispositions more testy; less bowels, less humility, a worse neighbour: the good Samaritan [Luk 12:30-37] is of more worth than a whole synagogue of them.

DQC2 (Lillias Skein, in Robert Barclay, Truth Trumphant [1831], 3:554, (16–): I saw, an historical faith would neither cleanse me, nor save me; if that could save any, the devils were not without a door of hope. I felt, I needed the revelation of the Son of God in me [Gal 1:16]; all that ever I read or heard without this, could not give me the saving knowledge of God. “None knoweth the Father but the Son, and he to whom the Son revealeth him [Mat 11:27 | Luk 10:22]; ” through the virtue whereof mine eyes were more and more by degrees opened. For the tender-hearted Samaritan had pity upon my wounded soul, when both priest and levite passed by, and the watchman rent my vail; and when there was no eye to pity, nor hand to help me, he drew near, and poured in wine and oil, as he saw needful [Luk 10:30-37], and fulfilled the promise in measure, wherein he had long caused me to hope, “He that follows me, shall ... not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life [John 8:12]... ”

DQC3 (William Penn, Works (1736), 1:751 (16–): whilst Men were perpetually wrangling and brawling about some one Opinion of Religion, the most important Points of Faith and Life were little regarded, Unity broken, Amity destroyed, and those Wounds made, that were never closed but with the Extinction of one Party: Not a Good Samaritan being to be found to heal and close them [Luk 12:30-37] ....

IP4:222 (1671): Hast thou received God's Holy Spirit into thy heart? Hast thou let in Christ's Spirit, when he hath knocked at the door of they heart, and received him [Rev 3:20]? And man is that house, and Christ is stronger than the strong man, and is come to cast him out, and spoil his goods; and this you must know before you come into the garden again; and before you know this, you must know trembling, and quaking, and your salvation wrought out with fear and trembling [Phil 2:12], which the apostle commands you; and then you will not despise Quakers and tremblers, but will receive them, and be with such who are in much fear and trembling at the word of the Lord [Isa 66:2].

IP1:79 (1658): Object. That it [obedience to the Light] breaks down relations, laws, governments; takes away due respect from magistracy and superiors, and turns the world upside-down [Acts 17:6]. Ans. Iniquity hath reigned, unrighteousness hath wound itself into, and twisted, every thing. And now the truth comes to discover and purge out the inquity; the strong man, who hitherto hath kept possession of the house [Luk 11:21], cries out, as if the destruction of the thing were aimed at. Nay, it is only the evil that is aimed at; but the thing itself is not to be destroyed, but to be set free from the evil, and preserved.

IP3:246f (1672): But the captivity of many hath been broken by the power of light, and the power and strength of darkness (inwardly) overturned by it. Oh, how hath the strong man, which kept the house, before the stronger than he appeared [Luk 11:21f] in the name and authority of the Father, – I say, how hath he trembled at the inward and spiritual appearance of him that was stronger than he! IP1:166 (1659): The work of the minister of Christ is to keep the conscience tender, that the voice of Christ may be heard, and the law of his spirit of life [Rom 8:2] (which makes obedient to the God of life) spring up there: but this is the image, here is the way, bow, conform [cf Isa 30:21], say the ministers of antichrist. But we are not convinced in the sight of God that this is the way, say the poor souls. It is your own fault; ye may be convinced if you will, say the ministers of antichrist.... Ye must be convinced, otherwise the magistrate must deal with you. Thus they endeavor to harden the conscience, that they may sit upon it and ride it, and terrify it from its subjection to its only true and lawful king. So this watching was for Christ, and against sin and evil in their own hearts. And then he brings a comparison. :And this know, that if the good man of the house," said he, "had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not suffered his house to be broken up [Luke 12:39]," &c. And so here is the good man's watching against sin and evil without, and the spoiler and thief without, whom the magistrate is to revenge, and to lay his sword upon. And here is also a watching against sin and evil within, and a waiting to receive Christ the Lord at his coming.

SIW 87 (Sarah Tuke Grubb, 1779): [would have resisted ministry] had not a friend stood up with the passage, He that knew the Lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes [Luk 12:47]. This did indeed come home, and so operated with what was already kindled, that, after such a conflict as I have cause ever to remember, I ventured upon my knees, and, in a manner I believe scarcely intelligible, poured out a few petitions.
