§ 47A-F (Mat 13:1-9 | Mar 4:1-9 | Luk 8:4-8)

Mat 13:1 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.      qtext

Mat 13:2 And great multitudes [T: much people] were gathered together [GT: resorted] unto him, so that he went into [BG: +greatly that he went and sat in] a ship, and sat [G: and sat down; BT omit]; and the whole multitude [T: all the people] stood on the shore.

Mat 13:3 And he spake many things unto them in parables [T: similitudes], saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;

Mat 13:4 And when [GT: as] he sowed, some seeds [GT: omit] fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them [T: it] up:      qtext

Mat 13:5 Some fell upon stony places [GT: ground], where they [T: it (3x)] had not much earth: and forthwith [GBT: anon] they sprung up, because they had no deepness [GT: depth] of earth:      qtext

Mat 13:6 And when the sun was up, they [T: it] were scorched [G: were parched; BT: caught heat]; and because they had no root, they [GT: for lack of rooting] withered away.

Mat 13:7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them [T: it]:      qtext

Mat 13:8 But other [G: Some again; B: But some; T: Part] fell into [GT: in] good ground, and brought forth [T: +good] fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.      qtext

Mat 13:9 Who [G: He that; T: Whosoever] hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Mar 4:1 And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was [GBT: omit] gathered [T: +together] unto him a great multitude, so [BT: much people, so greatly] that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude [GBT: all the people] was by the sea [GBT: +side] on the land [BT: shore].      qtext

Mar 4:2 And he taught them many things by parables [T: in similitudes], and said unto them in his doctrine,

Mar 4:3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:

Mar 4:4 And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air [G: heaven] came and devoured it up.      qtext

Mar 4:5 And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately [GT: by and by] it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:      qtext

Mar 4:6 But when [GBT: as soon as] the sun was up, it was scorched [G: was burnt up; BT: caught heat]; and because it had no root, it [T: rooting,] withered away.

Mar 4:7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and [GT: so that] it yielded [GBT: gave] no fruit.      qtext

Mar 4:8 And other [G: Some again; BT: And some] fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up [T: omits] and increased [GBT: grew]; and brought forth, some thirty [GBT: +fold] , and some sixty [GBT: +fold], and some an hundred [GBT: +fold].      qtext(1)     qtext (2)

Mar 4:9 And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Luk 8:4 And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city [GBT: all cities], he spake by a parable [BT: similitude]:      qtext

Luk 8:5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down [GT: under feet], and the fowls of the air [G: heaven] devoured it [GBT: +up].      qtext

Luk 8:6 And some fell upon a rock [G: on the stones; B: on stones; T: on stone]; and as soon as [G: when] it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture [GBT: moistness].      qtext

Luk 8:7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.      qtext

Luk 8:8 And other [GBT: some] fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.      qtext (1)     qtext (2)

§ 47G-K (Mat 13:10-17 | Mar 4:10-12 | Luk 8:9-10, 10:23-24)

Mat 13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?      qtext

Mat 13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because [T: omits] it is given unto you to know the mysteries [GBT: secrets] of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.      qtext

Mat 13:12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more [GT: omit] abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

Mat 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables [T: similitudes]: because they seeing [T: for though they see they] see not [G: do not see]; and hearing they hear not, neither do they [GT: omit] understand.      qtext

Mat 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith [GT: which prophecy saith; B: saying], By hearing [T: with the ears] ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing [T: with the eyes] ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

[Mat 13:14f cf Isa 6:9f]

Mat 13:15 For this people's heart is [T: hearts are] waxed gross [fat] , and their ears are dull of hearing, and [G: +with] their eyes they have closed [G: winked]; lest at any time [GT: omit] they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart [GT: hearts], and should be converted [G: return; B: convert; T: turn], and I should [GBT: that I might] heal them.      qtext

Mat 13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.      qtext

Mat 13:17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous [T: perfect] men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them [B: omits (2x)]; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Mar 4:10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable [T: similitude].      qtext

Mar 4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables [T: shall all things be done in similtudes]:      qtext

Mar 4:12 That seeing [BT: when they see] they may [T: shall] see, and not perceive [GBT: discern]; and hearing [BT: when thehy hear] they may [T: shall] hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted [GBT: turn], and their sins should be forgiven them.      qtext

Luk 8:9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? [G: demanding what parable that was. BT: saying what manner of similitude is this?]      qtext

Luk 8:10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries [GBT: secrets] of the kingdom of God: but to others [GBT: other] in parables [B: by parables; T: in similitudes]; that seeing they might [GBT: when they see they should] not see, and hearing they might [GBT: when they hear they should] not understand.      qtext

Luk 10:23 And he turned him unto [GBT: to] his disciples, and said privately [GBT: secretly], Blessed [BT: Happy] are the eyes which see the things [GT: omit] that ye see:      qtext

Luk 10:24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

(Mat 13:10f | Mar 4:10f | Luk 8:9f )

JN1:130 (1653): Thou sayest, "the Holy Ghost interprets Scripture by Scripture...." I answer, the Holy Ghost where he is needs no Scripture to interpret Scripture by who gave forth all the Scripture [2 Pet 1:21] to open it again; for the Holy Ghost did not give out the Scripture in parables to its own seed, but to the serpent's seed [Mat 13:10f]; and as that Spirit ariseth, it opens and brings all that is spoken in Scripture to remembrance [John 14:26], and leads into all truth in its measure [John 16:13]; and when any in whom the Spirit was, have made use of Scripture in like cases, it hath not been to open the meaning to themselves but to convince others, who had not the Spirit, or would not own it [margin: 2 Cor 3:3].

MFU 197 (1656): all the wisdom of the world is foolishness with God [1 Cor 3:19], & is shut out forever from knowing the mystery of the kingdom [Mat 13:11 ||]

IP3:204 (1672): We are gathered into that, and abide in that, in which no truth can be denied; and are in him that leadeth into all truth [John 16:13], and teacheth to deny no truth, that ever was held forth by the Spirit of the Lord. Some of us may not yet be grown up in understanding into the mysteries of the Kingdom [Mat 13:11 ||], which God hath revealed and made manifest to others; but yet we do not deny, but own one another in our several measures of knowledge and sense of things, and in our several growths.

(Mat 13:13-15) [cf Isa 6:9f, Mar 4:12, Luk 8:10b, John 12:39f, Acts 28:25-27]

RBA 137 (1678, V/VI.20): ...it is after the rejecting of the day of visitation, that the judgment of obduration is inflicted on men and women, as Christ pronounceth it upon the Jews, out of Isa 6:9, which all the four evangelists make mention of [Mat 13:13-15, etc], and last of all the apostle Paul ... [quotes Acts 28:25-27]. So it appears, that God would have them to see, but they closed their eyes; and therefore they are justly hardened.

GF4:72 (1656): the life is that which doth convert, and lets see for what purpose it was given, and gives a spirit of understanding [Isa 11:2], by which spirit they saw the eyes of your fathers blinded, whose ears were dull of hearing, and hearts gross [Mat 13:15], not receiving the covenant of life within; so over your hearts the veil is remaining [2 Cor 3:15], who yet have that eye blinded, and cannot hear the Holy Ghost, nor him who was born of it, to be converted and healed....

GF7:43 (1653): Heed not the eyes of the world, ye prophets of the Lord, but answer that in them all, which they have closed their eye [Mat 13:15] to; that ye may to them tell of things to come, answering that of God in them [Col 4:6/Rom 1:19] that shall remain.

§ 47L-P (Mat 13: 18-23 | Mar 4:13-20 | Luk 8:11-15)

Mat 13:18 Hear ye therefore the parable [BT: similitude] of the sower.

When any one [G: Whensoever any man; B: When one; T: Whosoever] heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one [G: that evil one; B: that evil; T: the evil man], and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed [G: hath received the seed; T: was sown] by the way side.      qtext

Mat 13:20 But he that received the seed [T: was sown] into stony places, the same [GT: in the stony ground] is he that heareth the word [T: +of God], and anon [G: incontinently] with joy receiveth it;      qtext

Mat 13:21 Yet hath he not root [T: no roots] in himself, but [T: and therefore] dureth for [GT: but] a while [GBT: season]: for when [GT: as soon as] tribulation or persecution ariseth [G: cometh] because of the word, by and by he is offended [T: falleth].

Mat 13:22 He also that received seed [T: was sown] among the [GT: among; B: into the] thorns is he that heareth the word [T: +of God]; and [GT: but] the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh [G: He is made; BT: so is he made] unfruitful.      qtext

Mat 13:23 But he that received seed into [T: which is sown in] the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty [GBT: fold], some thirty [GBT: fold].      qtext

Mar 4:13 And he said unto them, Know [GT: Perceive] ye not this parable [T: similitude]? and how then will ye know [GT: should ye understand] all [GBT: + other] parables [T: similitudes]?

Mar 4:14 The sower soweth the word.      qtext (1)      qtext (2)

Mar 4:15 And these are they [G: these are they that receive the seed; B: they that received seed; T: they that are] by the way side, where [G: in whom; B: are those where] the word is sown; but when they have heard [GT: +it], Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.

Mar 4:16 And these are they likewise which [GBT: and likewise they that] are sown on [GB: receive the seed in (B: into the)] stony ground; who, [GBT: are they, which] when they have heard the word, immediately [G: straightways; BT: at once] receive it with gladness;      qtext

Mar 4:17 And [GBT: Yet] have no root in themselves, and so endure but for [GBT: omit] a time: afterward, when [G: for when; B: and anon when; T: and anon as] affliction or [GBT: trouble and] persecution ariseth for the word's sake [G: word], immediately they are offended [T: they fall immediately].

Mar 4:18 And these are they which [G: Also (B: And those be; T: And) they that] are sown [GB: receive the seed] among thorns; [GT: +are; B: and those, I say, are] such as hear the word,      qtext

Mar 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, [GBT: enter in, and] choke the word, and it becometh [G: is; BT: is made] unfruitful.

Mar 4:20 And these are they which are sown on [G:P But they that have received seed in; B: And they which receive seed into; T: And those that were sown in] good ground; such as [GT: are they that; B: are such as] hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit [B: so that one come doth bring forth], some thirtyfold, some [G: one come thirty, another] sixty [T: +fold], and some an hundred [T: +fold].      qtext

Luk 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.      qtext (1)      qtext (2)

Luk 8:12 Those by the way side [GBT: that are beside the way] are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.      qtext (1)      qtext (2)

Luk 8:13 They [G: But they that are] on the rock [GBT: stones] are they, which, when they hear [G: have heard] , receive the word with joy; and [GT: but] these have no root [GBT: roots], which for a while believe, and in [G: but in the] time of temptation fall [GBT: go] away.      qtext

Luk 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and [G: have heard, and after their departure; T: hear and go forth and] are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life [GBT: voluptuous living], and bring no fruit to perfection [GBT: forth no fruit].      qtext

Luk 8:15 But that [GB: +which fell] on the good ground are they, which in [GBT: with] an honest [BT a pure] and good heart, having heard the word, [GBT: hear the word and] keep it, and bring forth fruit with [B: through] patience.      qtext

IP3:191 (1668): This, this is the great mystery of iniquity [2 Th 2:7], which hath great subtlety of deceivableness in it, to pick up and steal away the good seed out of the heart [Mat 13:19 ||], and to steal in a false image and likeness thereof, which may have a more glorious appearance to man's eye than the true seed itself (for that is the least of all seeds [Mat 13:31f], and makes the least show of any), but hath not the same nature, virtue, and power.

RBA 151 (1678, V/VI.24): [complex discussion of the Seed; more under Mat 13:31f] Christ said that the Kingdom of God was in the very Pharisees [Luk 17:20f] who did oppose and resist him and were justly accounted as serpents and a generation of vipers. Now the Kingdom of God could be no otherways in them than in a Seed, even as the thirty-fold and hundred-fold [Mat 13:23 ||] is wrapt up in a small seed lying in a barren ground, which springs not forth because it wants nourishment [Mat 13:19 ||]....

GF8:85f (1675): And keep your testimony, for the sufferings and resurrection of Jesus Christ; for they that suffer with him, shall reign with him [2 Tim 2:12]. But they that shuffle, and flee in the time of persecution, and deny him before men, such he will deny, or be ashamed of, before his heavenly Father [Mat 10:33/Luke 9:26]. Who deny him, or are ashamed of him, before earthly men, such fear the wrath of men, more than the wrath of God; and such are the stony ground, whose blade is scorched up by the heat of persecution [Mat 13:5f/20f]; but the good seed sown in the good ground, that brings forth thirty, sixty, and a hundred fold [Mat 13:23] in this life.

IP3:317 (1674): And this is the reason that many that make a fair show for a while, yet afterward come to nothing (but are like untimely figs [Rev 6:13], or like corn upon the house-tops, which hastily springeth up, but soon withereth [Psa 129:6/Mat 13:5f], because they either never rightly learn, or keep not to the cross.

HPS 389 (Susannah Blandford, 1698): many of Martha's spirit I have seen, and now do, which runs, and serves, and cumbers themselves [Luk 10:40] with striving to utter words, and have got the true notion in their heads, but the true Seed hath not taken root down-wards [Mat 13:20f ||]....

GF3:437 (1659): He said, "The scriptures were the seed which the sower went forth to sow." The seed is that which the scriptures speak of, which Christ said is the word [Luk 8:11]; and many who have the scripture, know not the seed, nor the thing it speaks of, nor the seed that is sown, which is the word, as instance the Jews and you Christians, who put scripture for it; for if scripture be the seed, it is sown already, it is printed, and what need you go out to sow it?

(Luk 8:11f)

JN1:517 (1655): And whereas you say, the seed is the word [Luk 8:11]; it's true, but the seed is not the letter, nor can any sow that seed, but where Christ is revealed in them [Gal 1:15f]. And you argue carnally and say, Can the devil take Christ out of their hearts [Luk 8:12]? I answer, Where the devil is received in, there Christ departs, and in that sense may be said to be taken away; but if you mind the words that follow ("lest they should believe and be saved"), it will appear to be the seed of Christ, for in what else could they believe to salvation, but in Christ?

SIW 91 (Sarah Tuke Grubb, 1782): But for want of keeping an eye open to this preserving Power, a spirit of indifference hath crept in, and, whilst many have slept, tares have been sown [Mat 13:25]; which as they spring up, have a tendency to choke the good seed [Mat 13:24]; those tender impressions and reproofs of instruction [Prov 6:23], which would have prepared our spirits, and have bound them to the holy law and testimonies of truth.

For wo is to every one, that is covered, but not with the spirit of the Lord; and who are covered, and not with his spirit, will not stand in his counsel [Isa 30:1]. § 48D-I (Mat 13:31-35 | Mar 4:26-34 | Luk 13:18-21)

Mat 13:31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed [GT: taketh and soweth] in his field:      qtext

Mat 13:32 Which indeed [T omits] is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh [GT: it is; B: is] a tree, so that the birds of the air [G: heaven] come and lodge [GT: build; B: make their nests] in the branches thereof [T: of it].

Mat 13:33 Another parable spake [T: similitudes said] he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures [GBT: taketh and hideth in three pecks] of meal, till the whole was [GBT: all be] leavened.      qtext

Mat 13:34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude [BT: people] in parables [T: by similitudes]; and without a parable [G: parables; T: similitudes] spake he not unto [T: nothing to] them:      qtext

Mat 13:35 That it might be fulfilled [T: to fulfill that] which was spoken by the prophet, saying [B: that saith], I will open my mouth in parables [T: similitudes]; I [GT: and] will utter [G: +the; BT: speak forth] things which have been kept secret from the foundation [T: beginning] of the world.

[cf Psa 78:2 LXX]

Mar 4:26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, [BT: +even] as if a man should cast [BT: sow] seed into the ground;

Mar 4:27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how [G: not knowing how; T: not ware].

Mar 4:28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself [G: itself]; first the blade, then the ear [GT: ears (2x)], after that the full corn in the ear.

Mar 4:29 But when [GT: And as soon as] the fruit is brought forth [G: sheweth itself], immediately [GBT: anon] he putteth [BT: thrusteth] in the sickle, because the harvest is come.

Mar 4:30 And he said [G: He said moreover], Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?

Mar 4:31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:      qtext

Mar 4:32 But when [GT: after that] it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than [GT: is greatest of; B: is greater than] all herbs, and shooteth out [GBT: beareth] great branches; so that the fowls of the air [G: heaven] may lodge [G: build; B: make their nests; T: dwell] under the shadow of it.

Mar 4:33 And with many such parables [T: similitudes] spake [GBT: preached] he the word unto them, as they were able to [T: after as they might] hear it.

Mar 4:34 But without a parable [G: parables; T: similitude] spake he not [GBT: nothing] unto them: and when they were alone [G: but; T: but when they were apart], he expounded all things to his disciples [G: +apart].

Luk 13:18 Then said he, Unto [GBT: Omit] what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it [GBT: or whereto shall I compare it]?      qtext

Luk 13:19 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into [GBT: sowed in] his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air [G: heaven] lodged [GBT: made nests] in the branches of it [G: thereof] .

Luk 13:20 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God?      qtext

Luk 13:21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures [GB: pecks; T: bushels] of meal [GT: flour], till the whole was [GBT: all was; T+ thorough] leavened.

GF3:222 (1659): "the kingdom of heaven is within you," said Christ [Luk 17:21]; yea, in the Pharisees; and that is the kingdom of man that never consents to sin; like a grain of mustard seed, like unto leaven, that leavens the new lump [Mat 13:31-33]. And he that cometh to know that little kingdom, and receiveth that little kingdom as a little child [Mar 10:15], it makes the kingdom of the world become the son of God's kingdom [Rev 11:15]; and know, that no unrighteousness, nor ungodliness, must enter into it.

IP2:357f (1663): The seed of the promise, the seed of the kingdom, is the least of all seeds [Mat 13:31f]. Man easily overlooks it; or if he have a little glimmering of it, readily despises it, as unlikely ever to have that in it, or bring that to pass for the soul, which it desires and expects. Yet there is no other way to the kingdom, but by this seed of the kingdom opening and growing in the heart, and gathering the heart into itself, leavening it (by its spreading) with the leaven of life eternal [Mat 13:33], and purging out the sour leaven of sin and death [1 Cor 5:7].

RBA 309, RBAF 107 (1678, X.10): This great duty then of waiting upon God must needs be exercised in man's denying self [Mat 16:24], both inwardly and outwardly, in a still and mere dependence on God, in abstracting from all the workings, imaginations, and speculations of his own mind, that being emptied, as it were, of himself.... And man being thus stated, the little Seed of Righteousness which God hath planted in his soul and Christ hath purchased for him, even the measure of Grace and Life (which is burdened and crucified by man's natural thoughts and imaginations), receives a place to arise and becometh a holy birth and geniture in man, and is that divine air in and by which man's soul and spirit comes to be leavened. JN2:211 (1655): ...the covenant of light which shines in darkness [John 1:5] you regard not; that's far below your comprehensions, nay, it's the least seed in you, which we know is the seed of the kingdom [Mat 13:31f], trodden underfoot by the kingdoms of the world: therefore nothing else leads out of the world but that whose kingdom is not in [of] it [John 18:36], and with this seed is the covenant; which seed you know not who take pleasure in the flesh; that's of another kingdom to which is no covenant but death and hell [Isa 28:15].

IP1:417 (1660): [God's presence] was still near near me all the time of my darkness, and did preserve me, and appear unto me; but I livingly knew it not, but ... waited for such an appearance as could not be questioned by the fleshly wisdom. And he that waits for that, and so despises the day of small things [Zech 4:10], cannot but refuse the little seed; and so, not being received into his earth, it can never grow up in him into a great tree [Mat 13:31f]; whereby the glory of the kingdom will be hid from him, and he shut out of it, when others enter into and sit down in it.

RBA 151f (1678, V/VI.24): [long and complex discussion of the Seed; quotes 1 Pet 1:23] Though then this Seed be small in its appearance, so that Christ compares it to "a grain of mustard-seed, which is the least of all seeds" [Mat 13:31f], and that it be hid in the earthly part of man's heart; yet therein is life and salvation towards the sons of men wrapped up, which comes to be revealed as they give way to it. And in this Seed in the hearts of all men is the Kingdom of God, as in capacity to be produced, or rather exhibited, according as it receives depth, and is nourished, and not choked; [more under Mat 13:19]....

HPS 392 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): [quotes Mat 13:31f] ...the Seed (or grace) of God, is small in its first appearance (even as the morning -light), but as it is given heed to, and obeyed, it will increase in brightness, till it shine in the soul, like the sun in the firmament at noon-day height; [warns against "despising the day of small things," Zech 4:10].....

IP2:181 (1661): The second end of persecution in the spirit that persecuteth is, to keep the children of light from gaining further ground. The kingdom of God and his truth is of a growing, spreading nature. It is like leaven [Mat 13:33], like salt, like the light of the morning; its nature is to leaven, to season, to overspread, and gather mankind from the evil, from the darkness, from the corruption, from the death and the destruction. Now the spirit of the world ... hunts and seeks to destroy the vessels wherein the light appeareth....

JSS 9: A little leaven, in time, leavens the whole lump [Gal 5:9], as it is suffered to operate; but until the whole is leavened [Mat 13:33], until every thought is brought into the obedience of Christ, we are never wholly born of the incorruptible seed [1 Pet 1:23], and may be in danger of a total and final apostacy.

(Mat 13:34f)

GF4:80 (1656): these that did not understand with their hearts, not converted, not healed [Mat 13:15] ... to these Christ opened his mouth in parables, and uttered forth things that have been kept secret from the foundation of the world, to the fulfilling of the prophets' words who were in the life [Mat 13:34f, Psa 78:2 LXX]; and to those that were out of the light, the life of the law, were the parables spoke....

Mat 13:38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one [BT: omit];      qtext

Mat 13:39 The enemy that sowed [GBT: soweth] them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are [GBT: be] the angels.

Mat 13:40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

Mat 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;

Mat 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Mat 13:43 Then shall the righteous [GT: just men] shine forth [GBT: omit; T: +as bright] as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who [G: He that; T: Whosoever] hath ears to hear, let him hear.

(Mat 13:38-42) [cf Mat 13:30]

[Other texts citing Mat 13:38-42: GF5:134 (Rev 14:19)].

GF6:344 (1686): Christ saith, "Let the tares and the wheat grow together till the harvest [Mat 13:30], which is the end of the world; and then Christ's angels shall separate the tares from the wheat [Mat 13:38-42]. And are not angels spirits, and not men? For Christ commands christian men to "love one another [John 13:34, etc], and love their enemies [Mat 5:44];" and so not to persecute them. And those enemies may be changed by repentance and conversion, from tares to wheat. But if men imprison them, and spoil and destroy them, they do not give them time to repent. So it is clear it is the angels' work to burn the tares, and not men's.

And so the children of God are counted for the seed [Rom 9:8], which the good seed Christ saith, are the children of the kingdom [Mat 13:38].

§ 48N-S (Mat 13:44-53)

Mat 13:44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a [GBT: the] field; the which when [BT: omit] a man hath found [T: findeth], he [BT: and] hideth [G: +it; B: hid], and for joy thereof goeth [G: departeth] and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.      qtext

Mat 13:46 Who, when he had [G: having] found one [G: a] pearl of great price [BT: precious pearl], went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Mat 13:47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a [G: +draw] net, that was [GT: omit] cast into the sea, and gathered [GT: that gathereth] of every kind [GBT: all kinds; G: +of things; T: +of fishes]:      qtext

Mat 13:48 Which, when it was [GT: is] full, they drew to shore [GBT: men draw (B: drew) to land], and sat down, and gathered [GT: sit and gather] the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.

Mat 13:49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth [G: go forth; T: come out], and sever the wicked [GBT: bad] from among the just [T: the good],

Mat 13:50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

(Mat 13:44-46)

GF usually conflates these two parables, e .g: "dig for pearl in field."

GF4:167 (1658): the kingdom of heaven is seen, which is as a grain of mustard-seed which is within [Mat 13:31f / Luk 17:21], and many have received it, and are become as little children [Mat 18:3], and they that be instructed to the kingdom, they bring forth their things new, and their things old [Mat 13:52]; and many are digging in the field [Mat 13:44], which is the world [Mat 13:38], which are set in their hears seeking for the pearl, and many have found it [Mat 13:45f], and many merchant-men be exchanging, glory to the Lord for ever. [more]

GF8:31 (1670): Therefore all keep in the sense of truth, and be digging for the pearl in your own field [Mat 13:44-46], and to find the silver in your own house, that was lost [Luke 15:8f], and the leaven [Mat 13:33] in your own hearts; that were it works, and is joined to, will leaven into its own nature.

IP2:264f (1661): The pearl is exceeding rich, the treasure of life unutterable; and he that will possess it, must sell all for it [Mat 13:44-46]; yea, all the riches of his nature (the best of his will, the best of his wisdom most refined); nay not only so, but all the riches of his spirit, all that he hath held, or can hold out of the life. Then, when he is poor in spirit [Mat 5:3], and hath nothing in him but emptiness, ... then alone is he fit to be comprehended and brought forth in the eternal spring.

IP3:17 (1667): Is not this the pearl indeed, the precious pearl of price? Who would not buy it? Who would not sell all for it? Who would not dig in the field, where this treasure is hid, till he find it? [Mat 13:44-46] The field is near thee, O man! which thou art to purchase and dig in, and must feel torn up by the plow of God in some measure, before this pearl or treasure appear to thee; thou must take up and bear the yoke [Mat 11:29] and cross [Mat 16:24] of Christ, until all be bowed down and crucified in thee which is contrary to its nature, before it be polished in thee, and thou come to behold and enjoy its riches and everlasting fulness.

IP3:431 (1670): Sit down and count the cost [Luk 14:28] of plowing up thy field, of searching after the hidden treasure [Mat 13:44] of pure and true wisdom, and consider seriously, whether thou canst sell all for it, both inward and outward riches; that if thou do set thy hand to the plow, thou mayest not look back after any thing else [Luk 9:62], within or without, but mayest be content and satisfied with the pearl [Mat 13:45f] of true wisdom and life alone.

(Mat 13:45f)

[Other texts citing Mat 13:45f: GF7:240 (under Heb 11:38), IP2:455 (John 6:60)]

IP3:328 (1674): [Happy is he that] knows the true thirst after the true waters, and comes to the waters which he thirsts after, and knows how to buy, and has bought the wine and milk which is to be had at the waters [Isa 55:1] (Oh, who knows what this buying is! this is beyond all talk and outward profession concerning the precious pearl; this is the real, hearty trafficking of the wise merchant for it [Mat 13:45f]).

(Mat 13:47f)

[Other texts citing Mat 13:47f: JN2:590 (under Mat 4:19f )]

GF8:76 (1674): Therefore, look unto him, who with his net, (which is his power,) hath gathered you out of this great sea [Mat 13:47], the world. And now, do not build like the fools upon the sand of the sea-shore; but upon the rock and foundation, which is Christ the life, that will stand over death, tempests, winds, and storms [Mat 7:24-27]; and so looking unto Jesus, that is your saviour, that has saved you out of the flood of destruction, who is the author of your faith [Heb 12:2]; by which faith you may walk upon the world's sea [Mat 14:25-32], looking unto him that will finish it....

IP4:348 (1675?): [the Seed] is of a gathering nature. It is of the nature of a net [Mat 13:47f]. It gathers out of that which is contrary to God, unto God. It gathers out of the world [John 15:19], out of the sea of wickedness [Isa 57:20], out of the kingdom of darkness, out of a man's own nature and spirit, into God's nature and spirit, and his light and kingdom, wherein the soul should dwell, and walk, and be subject, with God.

Mar 6:1 And he went out from [GBT: departed] thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him.

Mar 6:2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing [GBT: that heard] him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man [BT: he] these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works [G: that even such great works; B: and such mighty works that; T: and such virtues that] are wrought [G: done] by his hands?

Mar 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary [GBT: Mary's son], the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at [G: in; T: by] him.      qtext

Mar 6:4 But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour [T: despised], but in his own country, and among his own kin [G: kindred], and in his own house [T: among them that are of the same household].      qtext

Mar 6:5 And he could there do no mighty work [G: do no great works; B: shew no mighty work; T: shew no miracles], save that he [BT: but] laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

Mar 6:6 And he marvelled because of [GT: at] their unbelief. And he went round about the villages [GBT: aboaut by the towns (BT: +but lay) on every side], teaching.

(Mat 13:55-57 | Mar 6:3)

IP1:198 (1659): [quotes Mat 13:55f] What! this that glorious Messiah! the great king of glory, of whom all the prophets spoke and prophesied great things! Surely it cannot be. "And they were offended at him." [Mat 13:57] It was this made them they could not receive that heavenly doctrine of his, which otherwise might have been life to them....

(Mat 13:55 | Mar 6:3)

[Other texts citing Mat 13:55: GF4:318 (under Luk 2:16), RBA 152f (John 7:52) ]

GF6:113 (1682): And did not the Jews, in a despising way, say, "Is this not the carpenter's son?" [Mat 13:55] And in Mark, did not the Jews deride him and say, "Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary?" [Mar 6:3] So they called Christ the carpenter, but they did not know that he was to build up the fallen house of Adam by his power and spirit. [more under Heb 3:4]

GFT 59 (1674): The great controversy in Christ's time was about his flesh: "Is this the Christ, the carpenter's son, etc.?" [Mat 13:55] .... Now mark, the controversy then was about him as he was a man and took flesh upon him, and was come and suffered according to the flesh, not as he was God, but man. Now the controversy is amongst the Christians about the light which is the life in Christ. (They may crucify him again as to themselves [Heb 6:6], but he that died once dies no more [Rom 6:9].)

WPR 584 (1694): Thou hast set at naught all [the Quakers'] counsel, and would have none of their reproof [Prov 1:25], as thou shouldest have done. Their appearance was too straight, and their qualifications were too mean for thee to receive them; who like the Jews of old, cried, "Is this not the carpenter's son, and are not his brethren among us [Mat 13:55 | Mar 6:3]; which of the Scribes, of the learned (the orthodox) believe in him?"

(Mat 13:57 | Mar 6:4 | Luk 4:24 | John 4:44)

HPS 281 (Barbara Blaugdone, 1691): And those that were my former acquaintance, with whom I had formerly been very conversant ... now were afraid of me, and would not come near me, but the dread of God was upon me, and it made some of them to tremble; and some said, I was a witch; and when I would go to their houses to reprove them, they were so mad that they would run away, and then their servants would come and hale me out.... So I came to witness that a prophet is not without honour, save in his own country [Mat 13:57 ||].
