(Heb 11)
GF8:143 (1677): by faith the holy men of God [2 Pet 1:21] had victory [1 Jn 5:4], as you may see at large in Heb. xi [Heb 11].
GF8:215f (1682): consider the faith of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the faith of Abel, and Enoch, and Noah, and the faith of Jeremiah, and the rest of the prophets, and the faith of Daniel, and the three children, and the faith of all the apostles, what sufferings and imprisonments they went through; and consider all the martyrs since the apostles' days, consider what sufferings they have gone through [Heb 11]; and God and Christ is the same to uphold you, that are given up in his spirit, power, and faith, to stand for his glory; and be valiant for his truth and name upon the earth [Jer 9:3].
RBA 38 (1678, II:9): ...if the faith of the ancients were not one and the same with ours, i.e agreeing in substance therewith, and receiving the same definition, it had been impertinent for the apostle (Heb 11) to have illustrated the definition of our faith by the examples of that of the ancients, or to go about to move us by the example of Abraham, if Abraham's faith were different in nature from ours.
WPT 237f (1674; Mod Eng): From chapter 11 in the epistle to the Hebrews we can see that true faith has always been essentially the same, and consequently the rule has as well.... the rule must be of the same nature as faith. The faith is inward and spiritual, but no mere book can ever be.
SBD 45f (1750): The author to the Hebrews, in the eleventh chapter, gives us a large account of the faithfulness of the faithful, both men and women, enumerated...that we may be provoked by the strongest examples and inducements to follow the same steps in our pursuit of virtue.
11:1 Now faith is the substance [G: the grounds; B: the ground; T: a sure confidence] of things hoped for, [GT: +and] the evidence [T: a certainty] of things not seen. qtext
11:2 For by it the elders obtained a good report [GT: were well reported of].
11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were [GT: world was] framed [GBT: ordained] by the word of God, so that things which are seen were [things which we see, are] not made of things which do appear [BT: made of things which were (T: are) not seen]. qtext

GF7:83 (1654): All Friends, who are in the eternal light, ye see the figures, the shadows, and the types, (the beginning and ending of them,) and with the light ye come to see the substance of the things shadowed and figured forth [Heb 11:1?].
IP1:36 (1658): They that are in the faith, which is the substance of things hoped for under the law [Heb 11:1], are come from all the types and shadows of the law, and from all the heathenish observations of days and times in the spirit of this world, where the spirit of man is hard at work, into the true sabbath, into the true rest, where they have no more to work, but God works all in them in his own time, according to his own pleasure [Phil 2:13].
IP1:409 (1660): The smitings of the religious principle is balm, and its reproofs an excellent oil. Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me [Psa 23:4; quotes Psa 97:11]. In all the the tearings, smitings, and rendings of the earthly part (with which the seed also suffers) and the faith in which they are received, is the presence substance of the healing from the eternal virtue hoped for [Heb 11:1].
WTG 270 (Elizabeth Hudson, 175-): From this time I walked by faith, and not by light [2 Cor 5:7], for had now to support me was the substance of things hoped for and evidence of things not seen [Heb 11:1].
(Heb 11:2)
MFU 388 (1665): ...we are rejoiced and can praise the Lord for your valiant sufferings, that ye stand for the contention of the faith that was once delivered unto the saints [Jude 1:3], by which all the elders before you obtained a good report [Heb 11:2]....
(Heb 11:3)
GF8:134 (1676): by this one faith [Eph 4:5], which Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of [Heb 12:2], (by whom all things were made and created [John 1:3],) by it we do understand the worlds were made, [by the word of God,] [Heb 11:3]....
HPS 351 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): Those written words (for Scriptures signifies a Writing) they are publications in testimony of that creating Word of power, by which the worlds were framed; see Heb. 11.3. Yet they do not declare, that the world was made by them; but by that eternal Word which was at the beginning, as is recorded, John 1.1.
11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent [T: plenteous] sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was [B: was witnessed to be] righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it [G: by the which faith also; BT: by which also] he being dead yet speaketh. qtext
[Heb 11:4 cf Gen 4:3-10]
11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because [GBT: neither was he found, for] God had translated him [BT: taken him away] : for before his translation he had this testimony, that he [GBT: before he was translated (BT: taken away), he was reported of that he had] pleased God. qtext
[Heb 11:5 cf Gen 5:21-24, Jude 1:14f; Wis 4:10]
11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he [GBT: God] is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently [GBT: omit] seek him. qtext
11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear [GB :... moved with reverence; T: Noah honoured God after that he was warned of God of things which were not seen, and] prepared an ark to the saving of his house [GT: household]; by the which he condemned the world, and became [G: was made] heir of the righteousness which is [T: cometh] by faith. qtext

GF7:253 (1664): let them be of what profession or religion soever, heathen, Jew, or Christian, if they be persecutors about religion with carnal weapons [2 Cor 10:4], they are in Cain's land of Nod, wandering out of the faith of Abel, of the elect; in which faith God accepts the sacrifice [Heb 11:4], and these are in the land of the living; but Cain's land of Nod, where the envious ones are persecuting others about religion, in that land God has respect to none of their sacrifices nor religions.
WPR 597 (1694; WPT 396): ...we may truly say [of George Fox], with a man of old, that being dead, he yet speaketh [Heb 11:4]; and though absent in body he is present in spirit [1 Cor 5:3]; neither time nor place being able to interrupt the communion of the saints, or dissolve the fellowships of the spirits of the just [Heb 12:23].

GF4:288 (1661): By faith was Enoch translated (Heb 11:5), and so by that faith are all from the death to the life, from the darkness to the light [Acts 26:18], into the endless life [Heb 10:20]....
WPR 462 (1678): This faith that works by love [Gal 5:6], that divine love, which God plants in the heart, it inclines man, and gives him power to forsake all that displeaseth God; and every such believer becomes an Enoch translated [Heb 11:5], that is changed from the fashion of this world, the earthly image, the corrupt nature; and is renewed in the likeness of the Son of God [Col 3:10] and walks with God [Gen 5:24].

GF8:35 (1671): Friends,—When you are met together in the name of Jesus your saviour, let your minds be over all to him, and out of all things that change, and perish, and die of itself [Lev 22:18], and will corrupt, and are visible, up to him that is invisible, the Lord God, and his son Jesus Christ, that you may see him and feel him among you, and in your meetings, in his life, and light, and power, and spirit; and that you may know that God is, and that he is the rewarder of all them that diligently seek him [Heb 11:6]; and to know that God is present.
JN2:203 (1655): Consider this, ye professors of the nation, who weep and seek, but find not that which gives peace nor reconciles you to God. Without faith in Christ it's impossible to be well pleasing to God [Heb 11:6], who is your peace; and that's not faith in Christ that lays hold of an imperfect righteousness, for that's your own; but that's the righeousness of God, which by faith in Christ is freely received [Phil 3:9], and the least measure is perfect.
IP1: 233f (1659): There is a faith which is of a man's self, and a faith which is the gift of God [Eph 2:8].... [if knowledge, religion, and worship] proceed from, and stand in, the faith which is of man, they cannot please God [Heb 11:6], nor conduce to the salvation of the soul. But though they may taste very pleasantly to man's palate now, and administer much hope and satisfaction to him at present, yet they will fail at the time of need; for, as Christ said concerning the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees [Mat 5:20], so may I concerning this faith; except your faith, with the works of it, exceeds that faith, and all the works of it (even to the uttermost improvement thereof) which is to be found in man's nature, it will never lead you to the kingdom of God, nor be able to give you any right to the inheritance of life.
WPR 422 (1670): ...men [are] accustomed to entrench upon divine property, to gratify particular interests in the world ... through a misguided apprehension, to imagine they do God good service, that where they cannot give faith, they will use force.... God will not give his honour gto another [Isa 42:8], and to him only that searches the heart and tries the reins [Jer 17:10], it is our duty to ascribe the gifts of understanding and faith, without which none can please God [Heb 11:6].
WPT 263f (1674; Mod Eng): ...from the Light and Witness that God has placed in their consciences, most religions agree on the absolute necessities. These are, that God is; that God rewards those who diligently seek him [Heb 11:6]; the way to God is by purity, patience, humility, etc.; without which no one can see the Lord [Heb 12:14].
JSS 57 (17–): Is he not a "rich rewarder of all who diligently seek him?" [Heb 11:6] But could he be their actual rewarder, before they ever sought him or were in existence?
(Heb 11:7)
GF4:289 (1661): by their faith they have peace with God [Rom 5:1], having victory [1 Jn 5:4] over that that made the separation betwixt them and God, and so the heirs of righteousness by faith [Heb 11:7], and are to inherit Christ Jesus. Gal 3.
IP4:389 (1679): Query 7. "Whether baptism doth not lead men into Christ, as obedience to the mind of God in Noah's time led him into the ark, that we may be saved by Christ, as Noah was by the ark? Ans. It is the Father, by his drawings, that leads men to Christ, and and Christ by his Spirit baptizeth them into himself.... Nor was it obedience in Noah's time which led him into the ark, but God's voice or special command to him, which he received in the faith, ("By faith he prepared the ark." Heb 11:7) which faith produced obedience; so that is faith in the mighty power of God which saves....

IP3:208 (1672): For God justifieth no man as ungodly; but calleth on them to repent.... Now men are not ungodly in turning from their ungodliness, but changed; and so their state is in some measure changed before justified. If Abraham was ungodly when God called upon him; yet in forsaking his own country, and following the Lord, and offering up his son [Heb 11:8,17], he was obedient, and not ungodly, and in that obedience he was justified.

MFU 209 (1656): this is the cornerstone which all builders refuses and rejects, but on this rock is the whole church built which is made of living stones elect and precious [1 Pet 2:4-7], the spiritual temple whose builder and maker is God [Heb 11:10]....
JN2: 84 (1655): Let your God plead for himself against Jerubbaal, who hath thrown down his altars and will not repair his temples [Judg 6:31f]: for we that worship the living God are brought to worship him in temples made without hands [Mark 14:58], whose maker, builder, and upholder is God and not man [Heb 11:10]: and here they that freely receive, freely offer [Mat 10:8].

GF8:133 (1676): And live in that faith, by which Moses forsook Egypt [Heb 11:27], and refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter [Heb 11:24], and chose rather to suffer "affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of the world for a season [Heb 11:25]." And by this faith (which is the gift of God) [Eph 2:8] he saw God, who is invisible [Heb 11:27].
(Heb 11:24f)
MFU 87 (1654): remember Moses, who choosed rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to endure the pleasure of sin for a season [Heb 11:24f], for the wickedness of the wicked shall come to an end [Psa 7:9], and the Lord hath reserved the wicked for the day of trouble [Job 21:30].

GF7: 121 (1656): All Friends, to that which is pure, take heed, that with that all your minds may be kept up to God, who is pure; that as the lily ye all may grow [Hos 14:5], and receive wisdom from God how to use the creatures in their places, to the glory of him that created them.... That in the faith ye may stand, and with it ye may come to see him who is invisible [Heb 11:27]....
JN2:274 (1655): ... thou manifests what light thou knows, and what it discovers to thee who art but in visible things; but knows not that light that shows him that is invisible and without form [Isa 53:2], and such as thou must needs worship you know not what [John 4:22], or else naught at all but your own lusts, whose eye sees no farther but visible forms. So they that desire to be led blind [Mat 15:14] may come to thee and receive thy discovery of visible forms instead of the invisible God [Heb 11:27]; but the children of light have found a better teacher.

GF4:402f (1671): [quotes Josh 2:1,8-12] Mark, here is a woman, an harlot, that had no letter of written law or gospel, being a heathen in your account, how nevertheless, she confessed to the Lord, that he was God in heaven above all, &c. Now, was not this from a divine power and principle? and did not her faith keep her from perishing with the rest, as is there recorded by the Holy Ghost, in Hebrews 11:31.

GF3: 540 (1659): Now here in this he may charge all the prophets, Christ, and his apostles, who went up and down from place to place, Heb. xi [11:37G], that this is the mark of the devil [Job 1:7]; but this doth manifest and bring to light, and discover the Presbyterian priests of Scotland, who lie in dens and corners [Job 38:40/Prov 7:12], and fat benefits, and there stick in the earth, and have crept into houses [2 Tim 3:6]; who say it is the devil's mark to go up and down to preach, but in this they manifest themselves to be judged by the practice of Christ and his apostles, that their folly might appear unto all men [2 Tim 3:9]. JN2: 173 (1655): I say those are true ministers and ever was, who wandered to * fro, having no certain dwelling place [1 Cor 4:11], of whom the world was not worthy [Heb 11:38], who ever bore witness against the false prophets that bear rule by their means [Jer 5:31; quotes Mic 3:11]... and whose manner was to go into the synagogues and idols' temples [1 Cor 8:10] to disprove the hirelings' false worship and call people from them to the true shepherd [John 10:12-14]....
