JSS 66 (17–) : God has so created even wheat, that unless it die it abideth alone, and bringeth not forth [John 12:24]; and unless we die to the first state, will, inclination, and selfish life of the creature, we too abide alone, wrapped up in ourselves, in a life of separation from the life of God. This is abiding alone; if ever we are united to God, all that is in us, that is opposed to his pure reign in the soul, must die.

MFU 217 (1657): thou hast left thy pure guide & art as a blind man groping & stumbling & would find ease in making application of the letter without thee; but here thou seeks the living amongst the dead [Luk 24:5]. RBA 141, RBAF 101 (1678, V/VI.21): To this they object, that by Light [in John 12:36] here is understood Christ's outward person, in whom he would have them believe.... nay the place itself shows the contrary by these words, "While ye have the Light"; and by the verse going before, "Walk while ye have the Light lest darkness come upon you [John 12:35]." Which words import that when that Light in which they were to believe was removed, then they should lose the capacity or season of believing. Now this could not be understood of Christ's person; the Jews might have believed in him, and many did savingly believe in him, as all Christians do at this day, when the person, to wit, his bodily presence or outward man is far removed from them. IP3:533 (1678): Seventh query. What doth the light of the pure God, and of his Christ, do for them that receive and obey it? Doth it not bring them out of darkness, and change their nature; so that they become children of light, and no more darkness, as they were before, but light in the Lord? John 12:36, Eph 5:8.

IP3:254, IPL 57 (1672): [The Light] enlighteneth [John 1:9]. It showeth what is evil, and also what is good, according to the measure and proportion of it, and according to God's causing it to shine in the heart [2 Cor 4:6]. It discovers the mystery of darkness, the mystery of ungodliness, them mystery of iniquity [2 Th 2:7], the mystery of deceit in all its mysterious workings; for nothing is hid from the light of him with whom we have to do [Heb 4:13]. And it also discovers the mystery of godliness [1 Tim 3:15], the mystery of holiness, the pure way and commandment of life; and gives all the believers (the true believers in Christ) this experience, that "his commandment is life everlasting [John 12:50]." There is nothing the heart needs desire to know of God, but this makes it manifest in the due season. It opens the very mystery of the Scriptures, gives the right understanding and application of the promises, and fulfills the prophecies thereof in the heart.

IP3:314f (1674): Gospel obedience is exceeding necessary in and to the gospel state.... Mark: what a weight Christ layeth upon doing. "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them [John 13:17]." Why then the disciple cannot come to happiness, but in the doing, in the obeying of the will of Christ, his Lord and Master. And "He that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him to a wise man, that built his house upon a rock." But the believer, without doing the will, is the foolish builder, whose building will not stand [Mat 7:24-27].
