12:1 Then Jesus six days before the passover [T: Easter] came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead [G: was, who died; B: had been dead; T: was which was dead] , whom he [G: whom he had; T: and who Jesus] raised from the dead [BT: death] .

12:2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.

12:3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly [T: called Nardus, perfect and precious], and anointed the feet of Jesus [GBT: Jesus’ feet], and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with [T: of] the odour [G: savour] of the ointment.      qtext

12:5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?

12:6 This he said [G: Now he said this; T: This said he], not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had [T: kept] the bag, and bare what was put therein [GBT: given].      qtext

12:9 [G: +Then] Much people of the Jews therefore [GT: omit] knew [BT: had knowledge] that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead [BT: who (T: whom) he raised from death].      qtext

12:10 But [GT: omit] the chief [GBT: high] priests [GT: +therefore] consulted [BT: held a council] that they might put Lazarus also to death [GBT: to death also];

JN1:256 (1654): The Lord judge between the poor and you, and deliver the poor out of your hands. And for these you call ministers, they love the poor like Judas, who would first have all in their own bag [John 12:4-6]; and how they would relieve the poor out of it may appear by the poor that are sued by them for their tithes and set maintenance, who suffer the spoiling of their goods [Heb 10:34] and are in wants, but the priests live in all fulness [Ezek 16:49].

MFU 217 (1657): thou hast left thy pure guide & art as a blind man groping & stumbling & would find ease in making application of the letter without thee; but here thou seeks the living amongst the dead [Luk 24:5]. This increaseth thy trouble & leads thee further in the dark; & he that walks in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth [John 12:35]; & thou that art in the power of darkness lies open to the temptation of the enemy, & he leads thee captive at his will [2 Tim 2:26]: it is the enemy of thy soul that tells thee thou must not go to meetings except thou be moved.

RBA 141, RBAF 101 (1678, V/VI.21): To this they object, that by Light [in John 12:36] here is understood Christ's outward person, in whom he would have them believe.... nay the place itself shows the contrary by these words, "While ye have the Light"; and by the verse going before, "Walk while ye have the Light lest darkness come upon you [John 12:35]." Which words import that when that Light in which they were to believe was removed, then they should lose the capacity or season of believing. Now this could not be understood of Christ's person; the Jews might have believed in him, and many did savingly believe in him, as all Christians do at this day, when the person, to wit, his bodily presence or outward man is far removed from them. So that this Light in which they were commanded to believe must be that inward, spiritual Light, that shines in their hearts [2 Cor 4:6] for a season, even during the day of man's visitation [Luk 19:44]; which while it continueth to call, invite and exhort, men are said to have it and may believe in it; but when men refuse to believe in it, and reject it, then it ceaseth to be a Light to show them the way....

Now believing in the Light becomes a child of the Light [John 12:36], and here is received the wisdom that is justified of her children [Mat 11:19]. Here believing in the Light, you shall not abide in darkness [John 12:46], but have the Light of life [John 8:12] and come every one to witness the Light that shines in your hearts [2 Cor 4:6]....

HPS 397 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): [Grace] is God's gift to us, and therefore well may we return thanks unto him for his unspeakable gifts: God is the author of it, who is light, and in him there is no darkness at all [1 Jn 1:5]; for he covereth himself with light, as with a garment [Psa 104:2]; and dwelleth in that light which is inaccessible, which no mortal eye can approach unto [1 Tim 6:16]; he is the Father of Lights [Jas 1:17]; and therefore hath he given a measure of his own divine light to all mankind, to reveal himself unto them; so that they may know substantially what he is, and not worship him as the unknown god [Acts 17:23]: and this knowledge of himself, the Father is pleased to dispense to men, in and through the son of his love, Christ Jesus, our Lord who is come a light into the world (saith Christ) that whosoever believeth in me should not abide in darkness [John 12:46].

(John 12:50)

IP3:254, IPL 57 (1672): [The Light] enlighteneth [John 1:9]. It showeth what is evil, and also what is good, according to the measure and proportion of it, and according to God's causing it to shine in the heart [2 Cor 4:6]. It discovers the mystery of darkness, the mystery of ungodliness, them mystery of iniquity [2 Th 2:7], the mystery of deceit in all its mysterious workings; for nothing is hid from the light of him with whom we have to do [Heb 4:13]. And it also discovers the mystery of godliness [1 Tim 3:15], the mystery of holiness, the pure way and commandment of life; and gives all the believers (the true believers in Christ) this experience, that "his commandment is life everlasting [John 12:50]." There is nothing the heart needs desire to know of God, but this makes it manifest in the due season. It opens the very mystery of the Scriptures, gives the right understanding and application of the promises, and fulfills the prophecies thereof in the heart.

13:1 Now [BT: omit] before the feast of the passover [T: Easter], when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having [G: forasmuch as he; BT: When he] loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end [GBT: unto the end he loved them].

13:2 And supper being ended, the devil having [GBT: when supper was done (BT: ended), and (BT: after) that the devil had] now [BT: omit] put into [GBT: in] the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;

13:3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come [G: +forth] from God, and went to God;

13:4 He riseth [BT: rose] from supper, and laid [G: layeth] aside his [GBT: +upper] garments; and took a towel, and [B: when he had taken a towel, he] girded [T: girt] himself.      qtext

13:5 After that he poureth [GB: he poured; T: poured he] water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded [T: girt].

13:6 Then cometh [GBT: came] he to Simon Peter: and Peter [G: who] saith [GBT: said] unto him, Lord, dost [T: shalt] thou wash my feet?

13:7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest [T: wottest] not now; but thou shalt know [G: +it] hereafter.

13:8 Peter saith [GT: said] unto him, Thou shalt never [T: not] wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.      qtext

13:9 Simon Peter saith [GT: said] unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my [GB: the (2x)] hands and my head.

13:10 Jesus saith [GT: said] to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but [T: and] is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

13:11 For he knew who should betray him [B: who it was that should ...; T: his betrayer] ; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

13:12 So [T: omits] after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments [BT: received his clothes], and was set down again, he said unto them, Know [BT: Wot] ye what I have done to you?

13:13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am [GBT: am I].

13:14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.      qtext

13:15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do [G: +even] as I have done to you.      qtext

13:16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord [GBT: master]; neither he that is sent [G: the ambassador; BT: the messenger] greater than he that sent him.

13:17 If ye know [T: understand] these things, happy [G: blessed] are ye if ye do them.      qtext

13:18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but [G: +it is] that the scripture may [G: might; T omits] be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted [GBT: lift] up his heel against me.

13:19 Now [G: From henceforth] I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may [GBT: might] believe that I am he.

13:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send [G: If I send any, he that receiveth him] receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

GF7:78, GFEJ 55 (1654): Therefore, all dear friends and brethren, be servants to the truth, and do not strive for mastery, but serve one another in love [Gal 5:13]. Wash one another's feet, take Christ for your example [John 13:14f], that I may hear of no strife among you: but all walk in the truth, and in the love of it, up to God, for there ye are my joy and crown [Phil 4:1] in the Lord. Children would be striving; but that which would have the mastery, must die, and shall not enter into the kingdom of God. Therefore mind not high things, but fear, and condescend to men of low degree [Rom 11:20/Rom 12:16]; for the fear of the Lord keeps the heart clean, and the pure in heart see God [Mat 5:8].

(John 13:15)

JN1:12 (George Fox, 1653): Christ was our example in suffering and in holiness; and as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, "Be ye holy as I am holy [1 Pet 1:15f; Lev 11:44]." He is our example in humility: "I have given you an example," saith Christ, "that ye should do even as I have done unto you [John 13:15]"; and "as he is, so are we in this world [1 Jn 4:17]"; he is our forerunner [Heb 6:20], captain of our salvation [Heb 2:10], and in all things our example. "As they have done unto me, so shall they do unto you [cf John 15:20f]."

RBA 195 (1678, VII.8): If no man can be justified without faith , and no faith be living nor yet available to justification without works, then works are necessary to justification . [Cites Heb 12:14, Mat 7:21, John 13:17, 1 Cor 7:19, Rev 22:14]

(John 13:17)

IP3:314f (1674): Gospel obedience is exceeding necessary in and to the gospel state.... Mark: what a weight Christ layeth upon doing. "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them [John 13:17]." Why then the disciple cannot come to happiness, but in the doing, in the obeying of the will of Christ, his Lord and Master. And "He that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him to a wise man, that built his house upon a rock." But the believer, without doing the will, is the foolish builder, whose building will not stand [Mat 7:24-27].

13:21 When Jesus had thus said [G: said these things], he was troubled in [GT: +the] spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.

13:22 [T: +And] Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.

Now [BT: omit] there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples [one of the {B: Jesus’] disciples, which leaned (B: leaning) on Jesus’ bosom], [B: +even he] whom Jesus loved.

[John 13:23 cf John 21:20-24]

13:24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him [GBT: To him beckoned (G: +therefore) Simon Peter (B: +therefore) ], that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake.

13:25 He then lying [GBT: as (B: when) he leaned] on Jesus' breast saith [GBT: said] unto him, Lord, who is it?

13:26 Jesus answered, He it [T: that] is, to whom I shall [BT: omit] give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he [GBT: wet a (B: the) sop, and] gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon [GBT: Simon’s son].      qtext

13:27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

13:28 Now no man [G: But none of them that were; BT: That wist no man] at the table knew [BT: omit] for what intent [G: cause] he spake this [G: it; BT omit] unto him.

13:29 For [BT: omit] some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

[John 13:29 cf John 12:6]

13:30 He then having [GBT: As soon then as he had] received the sop [GBT: +he] went immediately out: and it was night.

13:31 Therefore, [GT omit] when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in [T: by] him.

13:32 If God be glorified in [T: by] him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

13:33 Little [T: Dear] children, yet a little while I am [GBT: am I] with you. Ye shall seek me: and [G: but] as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, [BT: +thither] ye cannot [GBT: can ye not] come; so now I say to you [GBT: also to you say I now].

13:34 A new commandment I give [GBT: give I] unto you, That ye love one another [BT: together]; as I have loved you, that ye also [BT: even so ye] love one another.      qtext

[John 13:34 cf John 15:12, 15:17; 1 Jn 3:23]

13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye [T: +shall] have love one to another.      qtext

13:36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards [G: afterward].

13:37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I [G: can I not] follow thee now? I will lay down [B: jeopard; T: give] my life for thy sake.

13:38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down [B: jeopard; T: give] thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast [GBT: have] denied me thrice.

(John 13:26f)

GF3:557f (1659): P. "And such you say that are wicked men, the sacrament is to them forbidden, and they are shut out of the congregation." A. .... did not Judas take the sop? [John 13:26f] ... You give your sacrament to the covetous and proud, to the lovers of gold [2 Tim 3:2/1 Tim 6:10?], and to them that are surfeited and drunk with the cares of this life, and such as are in superfluity [Luk 21:34], such you will give it to: and common outward drunkards you will keep it from: now are not all those forbidden, and out of the church of God?

GF7:159 (1659): And all Friends, dwell in love [1 Jn 4:16], for that is the mark of a disciple [John 13:35], and the fruits of faith and the spirit [Gal 5:22]; which love out of a pure heart is the end of the commandment [1 Tim 1:5] and fulfils the law [Rom 13:10], and in that is edification [1 Cor 8:1] and building, and the fruits of being passed from death to life [John 5:24]; there is love to God, brethren, and enemies, being in the seed that destroys death [1 Cor 15:26] and the power of it, the devil [Heb 2:14]....

IP1:39 (1658): [quotes John 13:35] And by this may all men know, that those that now go for Christians are not Christ's disciples, in that they do not love one another. They are not at unity in the light, and so cannot love one another there; but are only in unity in forms, in opinions, in professions, in practices; so any difference there stirs up the enmity, causing risings in the heart against them at least, if it proceed not further. The true love grows from true union and fellowship in the light; where that is not known, there cannot be true love in the spirit, but a feigned love in the flesh.

HPS 531 (Women's Yearly Meeting at York, 1688): And, dear friends, join not with any sort of people further than will stand with truth's honour, and reach God's witness in every conscience [1 Jn 5:9f], but as much as in you lieth live peaceably with all men [Rom 12:18], and do good unto all, especially unto the household of faith [Gal 6:10], and so daily fulfil the royal law of love [Jas 2:8], in shewing to all men that you are Christ's disciples, by loving him and one another [John 13:35].

DFR 29: I rejoiced to find that which I had been seeking; and soon owned [the Quakers] to be the Lord’s people; the true church of Christ; according to his own description of it; where he says, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye love one another [John 13:35]."
