Luk 5:1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,      qtext

Luk 5:2 And saw two ships standing by the lake [GBT: lake's side]: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

Luk 5:3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's [BT: pertained to Simon], and prayed [G: required] him that he would thrust out [G: off] a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

Luk 5:4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down [BT: slip] your nets for [GBT: to make] a draught.

Luk 5:5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled [G: travailed sore; BT: laboured] all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word [B: commandment] I will let down [BT: loose forth] the net.      qtext

Luk 5:6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

Luk 5:7 And they beckoned unto their partners [BT: fellows], which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink [G: did sink; BT: sunk again].

Luk 5:8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart [GBT: Go] from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

Luk 5:9 For he was astonished [GBT: utterly astonied], and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken [GT: took]:

Luk 5:10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners [G: companions] with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

Luk 5:11 And when they had brought their ships to land [B: up their boats to shore], they forsook all, and followed him.

[Luk 5:11 cfMat 4:20,22, Mar 1:18,20; forsook all and followed him: cf Mat 19:27]

GF6:477 (168-?): And when the disciples had been toiling all night with their nets and could catch no fish, but Christ bid them cast their nets again into the sea, which they did, and drew it out, and at his word the net was full of fish [Luk 5:1-7]. And therefore whom Christ sends forth with his power and holy ghost, and saith unto them "Freely ye have received, freely give" [Mat 10:8], these dare trust Christ both with carnal and temporal things, both for themselves and families, and such labour to keep the gospel of Christ without charge [1 Cor 9:18], so that none can say, it is a chargeable gospel [1 Th 2:9].

(Luk 5:5)

JSS 10f (17–): All religious activity out of [the life and spirit] is but toiling in the night [Luk 5:5], and without divine help and direction. This gains nothing substantial; it is loss, and not true gain: it is dross, and dung, and filthy rags [Phil 3:7f, Isa 64:6]. The sooner we lose it all, the better.

Mat 9:2 And, behold [GT: lo], they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a [G: Laid on a; B: lying in a; T: lying in his] bed: and Jesus seeing their faith [BT: when Jesus saw the faith of them, he] said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer [G: comfort]; thy sins be [G: are] forgiven thee.

Mat 9:3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within [G: with; T: in] themselves, This man blasphemeth.      qtext

Mat 9:4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts [GBT: when Jesus saw their thoughts, he] said, Wherefore think ye evil [G: +things] in your hearts?

Mat 9:5 For whether is [G: +it] easier, to say, Thy sins be [G: are] forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?

Mat 9:6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power [G: authority] on earth to forgive sins [BT: to forgive sins in earth], (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto [T: home to] thine house.

Mat 9:7 And he arose, and departed to his [GT: +own] house.

Mat 9:8 But when the multitudes [G: multitude; T: people] saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto[G: authority to] men.

(Luk 5:21-23 | Mat 9:3-6 | Mar 2:6-9)

JWJM 251f (17–): If depth of knowledge and a high title had been sufficient reasons to make a splendid show, [Christ] would have made it. He told the woman of Samaria sundry things relative to her past life [John 4:16-19], made mention of the decease of Lazarus [John 11:14], and answered the scribe who accounted him a blasphemer, without information [Mat 9:3-6 | Mar 2:6-9 | Luk 5:21-23], and having the spirit without measure [John 3:34] knew what was in man. The title of Lord he owned, nor was it ever more justly given to any–that in riches and wisdom and greatness there was none on earth equal to him; and as he lived in perfect plainness and simplicity, the greatest in his family cannot by virtue of their station claim a right to live in worldly grandeur without contradicting his doctrine who said: "It is enough for a disciple to be as his master" [Mat 10:25].

(Luk 5:21 | Mar 2:7)

HPS 177 (Katharine Evans and Sarah Chevers, 1662): They asked us, if we did believe men could forgive sins? We said None could forgive sins but God only [Luk 5:21 | Mar 2:7]. They brought us that scripture, Whose sins ye remit on earth, shall be remitted in Heaven [John 20:23 / Mat 18:18]. We said, All power was God’s and he could give it to whom he would (that were born of the Eternal Spirit, and guided by the same; such have power to do the Father’s will, as I answered a friar also in the city of Naples); and they were silent, the Power greatly working.

(Mat 9:9 | Mar 2:14 | Luk 5:27f)

GF2:343 (1689): Jesus saw Matthew "sitting at the receipt of custom, and he said unto him, follow me. And he arose and followed him." Mat 9:9. And Christ employed Matthew to gather his people, that were scattered from God; another manner of treasure than the outward custom of the Romans.

JN1:134: [Mat 9:9, see under Mat 10:37]

WPR 63 (1669): Nor were the Apostles, the immediate messengers of the Lord Jesus Christ, other than poor men, one a fisherman, one a tentmaker [Acts 18:1-3], and he that was of the greatest (though not the honestest) employment was a customer [customs gatherer, Mat 9:9] (perhaps some waiter or the like); therefore it is very unlikely that any of them were followers of the fashions of the world.

(Mat 9:10-13 | Mar 2:15-17 | Luk 5:29-32)

JN2:40 (1656): Thou says Christ accompanied with prodigals and harlots, and then says try John 15:2, and there thou art tried to be a liar and a fruitless branch cut off; and though Christ taught prodigals and harlots, yet he was not a companion with them [Mat 9:10-13 | Mar 2:15-17 | Luk 5:29-32]; neither can thy harlot's mind, who art out of the light, know him or his company.

(Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31)

[Other texts citing Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31]: IP4:95f (John 3:14)]

GF3:256 (1659): He saith, "The Bible is the soul's physic: and people must depend upon the spirit's speaking in the scriptures." A. The soul's refreshment is Christ, and its physician Christ [Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31]; many have the Bible, and do not know it, and the scriptures, as the Pharisees had; the soul's physician is that which the scriptures speak of: many may have the words, the Bible, and yet not have the thing it speaks of; and they that have the thing it speaks of, have both.

IP1:128 (1659): Christ is the skillful Physician [Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31]; he cures the disease, by removing the cause. The unskillful physicians, they heal deceitfully; crying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace [Jer 6:14, 8:11], while that which breaks the peace is standing: but Christ doth not so, but slays the enmity in the heart by the blood of his cross, so making peace [Eph 2:15f]. And this is true peace, certain peace.

IP3:278 (1672): Indeed the physician is come inwardly and spiritually, and he inwardly heals and restoreth his people.... But there are some who are so sound and whole in their notional apprehensions and practices, that they have no need of the physician [Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31], and them the physician passeth by, as unworthy of him, and whom he intendeth shall have no share with him. "Ephraim is joined to idols" (he is well, he hath enough, he hath no need of me) "let him alone," saith the Lord [Hos 4:17].

WPR 172f (1682): The whole needs not the physician [Mat 9:12 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:31], the full have no need to sigh, nor the rich to cry for help. Those that are not sensible of inward wants, that have no fears or terrors upon them, who feel no need of God's power to help them, nor the light of his countenance to comfort them; what have such to do with prayer? ... They pray the will of God may be done [Mat 6:10 | Luk 11:2]; and do constantly their own....

(Mat 9:13 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:32)

GF4:20f (1653): Christ saith, I call sinners to repentance [Mat 9:13 | Mar 2:17 | Luk 5:32]; that light in thee calls thee to repentance, and if thou hearkenest to that, thou hearkenest to Christ, and if thou hatest that [John 3:20], thou hatest Christ, and God.... And thou that sayest thou had not come to repentance, if thou hadst not known the letter, thou deniest Christ, who came to call sinners to repentance before the letter was; it is he that calls sinners to repentance, and not the letter....

GF6:316 (1685): Let all destroyers and persecutors about religion consider this, how short they have been of the practice of the law of God, and the nobility of true christianity; and let them all go learn this lesson what the Lord saith, "I will have mercy, and not sacrifice." [Mat 9:13, Hos 6:6]

(Mat 9:14f | Mar 2:18-20 | Luk 5:33-35)

IP1:203f (1659): Again, they excepted against him, that he did not teach his disciples to fast and pray, as John did, Luk 5:33, but could suffer them to transgress the traditions of the elders. Mat 15:2. He was not strict after the Jewish way of devotion, nor strict after John's neither; but against the traditions of the godly elders of the Jewish church; against sanctifying of the Lord's sabbath (justifying his disciples in plucking ears of corn thereon [Mat 12:1-8 | Mk 2:23-26 | Luk 6:1-5]; whereas their forefathers the Jews were not so much as to gather manna on that day [Exo 16:22-27]; against fasting and prayer; for he justified his disciples in that they did not fast and pray as John did, saying, how could they mourn while the bridegroom was with them? Mat 9:15. And consider which way the Jews (in the state they stood) could understand such an answer as this, to rest satisfied therewith.

(Mat 9:15 | Mar 2:19f | Luk 5:34f)

JN2:256 (1655): And thou tells of the children of the bridechamber, cannot mourn while the bridegroom is with them [Mat 9:15 | Mar 2:19f | Luk 5:34f], and of putting people into a watching frame of spirit. I say, what bridegroom knows thou with thee, who deny the light of Christ and the infallible spirit in thee? And what spirit wilt thou watch withal; the lying spirit [1 Ki 22:22] never knew him nor must enter with him, but is shut out with the sorcerers and whoremongers.

IP3:40 (1667): Did not the bridegroom go away [Mat 9:15 | Mar 2:19f | Luk 5:34f], as to his appearance in flesh, that he might come again in Spirit? Did not the apostles, who knew his appearance in flesh, and his tabernacling among them, know also afterwards his appearnce in Spirit, and his tabernacling in them? And were not their hearts filled with joy unspeakable, and full of glory [1 Pet 1:8], because of the presence of the bridegroom?

HPS 427 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): And now it rises in me to write a word to comfort you, you friends of the Bridegroom [John 3:29], that mourn for his withdrawing [Mat 9:15 | Mar 2:19f | Luk 5:34f], and eat your bread with quaking, and drink your water with trembling [Ezek 12:18], as those who find no comfort till you do enjoy him. Wait without weariness, and you shall behold his countenance, and hear his pleasant voice, which will revive your spirits; but still be you mindful when you hear things unutterable [2 Cor 12:4], that you keep low and humble, and so shall you be kept from the snares of the Devil.

(Mat 9:16f | Mar 2:21f | Luk 5:36-38)

GF8:157f (1678): So ... they that are in old Adam are old creatures; and are in their old things, old ways, old worships, and old religions, and have the old garments [Mat 9:16], and the old bottles, that hold the old wine, and cannot endure the new [Mat 9:17]; and have the old, rusty, moth-eaten treasure [Mat 6:19]. And they that are in Christ, the heavenly and spiritual second Adam [1 Cor 15:45/47], who maketh all things new [Rev 21:5], are new creatures, and spiritual men, and are heavenly-minded [Rom 8:6?], and are new bottles, that hold the new wine and the new heavenly treasure [Mat 6:20], and have the new clothing, the fine linen, the righteousness of Christ [Rev 19:8], and are the new and living way [Heb 10:20], over all the dead ways.

GF8:153 (1678): And here is water in your own wells, that you may drink out of your own wells or cisterns [Prov 5:15], and to have grapes off their own vines, from which they may have the new wine in their new bottles [Mat 9:17], to glad and cheer their hearts with the wine from the heavenly branch of the heavenly vine, of which the Lord is the husbandman [John 15:1]; and this must every one of God's people feel.

IP3:473f (1671): Ah! many have had some touches of the light, some true appearances thereof, and tastes of the glory; but who hath been so united to the light, as to keep out of all that corrupteth? There is somewhat still lives near, that would fain be mixing with it.... It is better to know the old bottle emptied, yea, broken, than filled with new wine [Mat 9:17 | Mar 2:22 | Luk 5:37f]. And how many have taken themselves to be new made, who, when the Spirit of the Lord hath come to search them by his pure, eternal light, have been found and are found in the old nature and spirit!

WPR 508 (1693): If any say, that Christ commanded that [baptism or the Supper] should be done till he come [1 Cor 11:23-26]; they say that he that said so, told his disciples also, that he would come to them again [John 14:3; quotes Mat 16:28, John 14:17]; and that he would drink no more of the fruit of the vine, till he should drink it new with them in the Kingdom of God [Mat 26:29| Mar 14:25]. Which is the new wine that was to be put into the old bottles, Luk 5:37, and is the wine of the kingdom ... which kingdom is within [Luk 17:20].

[Other texts citing Mat 12:20: IP1:109 (John 5:22)]

MFU 264 (to Justice Anthony Pearson , 1659): Therefore, dear heart, come home to thine own measure to the judgment seat of Christ, where the Judge sits as a refiner's fire [Mal 3:2] which will not be quenched if thou abide there, till the judgment be brought forth into victory [Mat 12:20], and then it will be set in the earth [Isa 42:4]: & till then thou art no pure judge, for all judgment is committed to the Son [John 5:22], & whatsoever judges which is not the Son is for judgment with the Son.

IP3: 62f (1671): Will the mystery of life, where it is received and turned to, ever cease working against the mystery of death, until it hath wrought it out of the mind? Shall judgment never be brought unto victory [Mat 12:20] over sin in the heart? Shall there never be pure and full communion with the Lord in this world, without the interruption of sin?

HPS 510 (Katharine Whitton, 1681): O living praises unto him who hath appeared in our age, and brought forth judgement into victory [Mat 12:20], and ransomed, redeemed, and raised by his ancient power, his own suffering seed, which in every age hath found acceptance with him from the beginning....

RBA 216 (1678, VIII.8): if thou desirest to know this perfection and freedom from sin possible to thee, turn thy mind to the Light and spiritual law of Christ in the heart and suffer the reproofs thereof, bear the judgment and indignation of God upon the unrighteous part in thee as therein it is revealed; which Christ hath made tolerable for thee; and so suffer "judgment" in thee to be "brought forth into victory" [Mat 12:20], and thus come to partake of the fellowship of Christ's sufferings and to be made conformable to his death [Phil 3:10], that thou mayest feel thyself crucified with him to the world [Gal 6:14] by the power of his cross in thee....

IP2: 427f (1666): For men with fine words, and fair speeches may deceive the hearts of the simple [Rom 16:18]; but they cannot deceive those to whom God giveth the ability to try spirits [1 Jn 4:1]. Could the devil deceive Christ, when he said "Thou art the son of God" [Mar 3:11]? No; Christ knew his spirit to be against him, notwithstanding those words.

§ 36B-J (Luk 6:17-26)

Luk 6:17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plain [G: a plain place; BT: the plain field], and [T: with] the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

Luk 6:18 And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

Luk 6:19 And the whole multitude sought [BT: all the people pressed] to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

Luk 6:20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.      qtext

Luk 6:21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled [GBT: satisfied]. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

Luk 6:22 Blessed are ye [B: shall ye be], when men shall [GBT: omit] hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company [G: when they separate you; T: thrust you out of their company], and shall reproach you [G: revile you; B: rail on you; T: rail], and cast out [GB: put out; T: abhor] your name [B: names] as evil [BT: an evil thing], for the Son of man's sake.      qtext

Luk 6:23 Rejoice ye in that day [T: then], and leap for joy [GBT: be glad]: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto [T: their fathers entreated] the prophets.

Luk 6:24 But woe unto [GT: be to] you that are rich! for ye have received [B: omits; T: therein] your consolation.

Luk 6:25 Woe unto [GT: be to] you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto [GT: be to] you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn [GBT: wail] and weep.      qtext

Luk 6:26 Woe unto [GT: be to] you, when all men shall speak well of [BT: praise] you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.      qtext

IP3:363 (1675): The poor receive the gospel [Mat 11:5], the poor receive the kingdom [Luke 6:20], the poor receive the power, the poor receive the righteousness and salvation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ye are too rich in your own comprehensions and gathered knowledge from your own literal conceivings, to learn to wait aright, to receive of him his gold, his raiment, and his eye-salve [Rev 3:17f].

WDS 85 (Francis Ellington, 1654): And they cry, Repent, and fear the living God, and return to the light of Christ in your own consciences, which convinceth you of sins and of evil deeds. And for this, the wicked world persecutes them, to fulfil the Scriptures, in casting out their names as evil for the Son of Man's sake [Luk 6:22]; but God hath prepared them, and they can suffer more, than the wicked world can inflict upon them. And when the wicked have punished them, what they can, they will forgive [their persecutors] and pity them; and when they are beaten, they resist not [Mat 5:39]; and when they are cursed, they bless [Mat 5:44].

MFS 36 (1660): Another mark that Christ gave of the false prophets, to know them by, was when all men should speak well of them, for so did their fathers of the false prophets [Luk 6:26]. Now let all people judge, whether this be not the condition of the priest and teachers at this day, for they bear rule by their means. Yet the people love to have it so [Jer 5:31].

§ 37H-R (Luk 6:27-36 | Mat 5:39-48)

Luk 6:27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good [G: well] to them which hate you,

Luk 6:28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use [G: hurt; BT: wrongfully trouble] you.

Luk 6:29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke [T: gown] forbid not to take thy coat also.

Luk 6:30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods [G: the things that be thine] ask them not again.

Luk 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

[Luk 6:31 cf Mat 7:12]

Luk 6:32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also [G: shall ye have? for even the sinners; T: are ye worthy of? for the very sinners]? love those that love them [BT: their lovers].

Luk 6:33 And if ye do good to them which do good to [T: do for them which do for] you, what thank have ye? for sinners also [G: shall ye have? for even the sinners; T: are ye worthy of? for the very sinners] do even the same.

Luk 6:34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye [GT: shall ye have]? for sinners also [G: even the sinners; T: the very sinners] lend to sinners, to receive as much again [G: the like; B: such like again].      qtext

Luk 6:35 But [GT: Wherefore] love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping [GBT: hoping] for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest [G: most High]: for he is kind unto the unthankful [GBT: unkind] and to the evil.      qtext

[children of the Most High: cf Psa 82:6]

§ 38 (Luk 6:37-49 | Mat 7:1-5, 16-27)

Luk 6:37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

Luk 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal [GT: with what measure ye mete] it shall be measured to you again [GBT: with the same (B omits) shall other men mete to you again] .

Luk 6:39 And he spake a parable [BT: put forth a similitude] unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall [BT: do] they not both fall into the ditch?

Luk 6:40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master [GB: but whosoever will be a perfect disciple, shall be...; T: Every man shall be perfect even as his master is].

Luk 6:41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is [GBT: seest thou a mote] in thy brother's eye, but perceivest [GBT: considerest] not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Luk 6:42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest [GB: seest; T: perceiveth] not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly [GBT: perfectly] to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

Luk 6:43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt [GBT: it is not a good tree that bringeth forth evil] fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring [GBT: is that (G omits) an evil tree, that bringeth] forth good fruit.

Luk 6:44 For every tree is known by his own [BT: omit] fruit. For of thorns men do not gather [G: neither of thorns gather men] figs, nor of a bramble bush [GBT: bushes] gather they grapes.      qtext

Luk 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is [G: omits] good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is [G: omits] evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Luk 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord [T: Master, Master], and do not the things which I say [G: the things that I speak; BT: as I bid you]?      qtext

Luk 6:47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings [G: words], and doeth them [GBT: the same], I will shew you to whom he is like:

Luk 6:48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood [GBT: waters] arose, the stream beat vehemently [GBT: flood beat] upon that house, and could not shake [BT: move] it: for it was founded [GBT: grounded] upon a rock.

Luk 6:49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently [GBT: flood did beat]#, and immediately it fell [GT: it fell by and by]; and the ruin [GBT: fall] of that house was great.
