GFJN 33 ([1648]): ...the Lord commanded me to go abroad into the world which was like a briery, thorny wilderness [Isa 14:17/Judg 8:7]. When I came, in the Lord's mighty power, with the word of life into the world, the world swelled and made a noise like the great raging waves of the sea [Isa 17:12/Jude 1:13]. EQ 310 (Samuel Fisher, 1661): This is that noble, righteous, holy Seed, which while man was at first born, made, created and planted after the nature and image of, he was said to be planted a noble vine; wholly a right seed [Jer 2:21], till by being alienated, separated, and estranged from it into his earthly part, he became a degenerate plant of a strange vine unto the Lord [Jer 2:21], a seed of evil- doers, that are never more to be renowned [Isa 14:20], unless they come again to be born of this holy Seed [Isa 6:13], which is anothen, from above....

GF4:70 (1656): Now this branch [Isa 11:1], this king, this shepherd, this fold [John 10:16] do we witness, that are his sheep, and are come to witness the life that Moses ... and David ... and the prophets were in, from which life the scriptures were given forth to be believed and fulfilled, which we see with the same that gave them forth, and the Son we see to reign; and the Lord is cutting off, according to his promise, Babel, his name and his remanat, son and nephew [Isa 14:22], and there shall be a highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, like as it was unto Israel in the day when he came up out of the land of Egypt [Isa 11:16]: of this take notice.

GF7:274 (1666): The besom of the Lord is going forth to sweep [Isa 14:23], the candle of the Lord [Prov 20:27] is lighted to search every corner of your houses [Luke 15:8f]; for the just walk in the path which is a shining light [Prov 4:18], which admits of no rubbish in it.
HPS 468 (Ann Gilman, 1662): to those that forget God, and turn their backs at his reproof, and will none of his counsel [Prov 1:25], such will our God sweep away with the besom of destrucion [Isa 14:23]; for the worker of iniquity will not be able to abide his presence in that day. In the presence of the Lord God, live in the power of the Lord God of heaven and earth, that will make all nations to tremble and to quake [Isa 64:2?]; for those are God's enemies that be out of his power and counsel.

IP1:193 (1659): Jerusalem is the city of the great King, which is coming down from heaven [Rev 21:2]: and Israel is his people; and both must have a place in the earth. The Lord hath determined it, and who can withstand it [Isa 14:27G]? What prejudice can Jerusalem, or the inhabitants thereof, bring unto you? They are enemies, indeed, to this earthly state of things, and would have all brought into subjection to the life and power of their king, and all that stands in opposition to God brought down, and made pliable to his spirit; and this the unyoked earthly spirit [Mat 11:29f] cannot bear. But this is the interest of your souls, and the way to unity with that life which is their happiness, peace, and rest for ever. For if ye could pass through the fire [Num 31:33], and bear the burning up of your dross, ye also might become vessels for the finer [Prov 25:4], and might dwell with them in their everlasting habitation.

17:7 At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect [G: look] to the Holy One of Israel.

JN3:320 (1656): the arm of the Lord is seen gatherin g his sheep, which by you have been scattered upon the barren mountains this cloudy dark day [Ezek 34:12], ever since the rise of the pope and his adherents, the head and tail, talk and branch [Isa 19:15] that from him spring.
20:1 In the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod, (when Sargon the king of Assyria [G: Asshur] sent him,) and [G +had] fought against Ashdod, and took [G: taken] it;
20:2 At the same time spake the LORD by [G: +the hand of] Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off [G omits] thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot. qtext
20:3 And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia;
20:4 So shall the king of Assyria lead away [G: Asshur take away] the Egyptians prisoners [G: the captivity of Egypt], and the Ethiopians captives [G: captivity of Ethiopia], young and old [G: both young men and old men], naked and barefoot, even with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.
20:5 And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.
20:6 And [G: Then shall] the inhabitant of this isle shall [G omits] say in that day, Behold, such is our expectation, whither we flee [G: fled] for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria [G: Asshur]: and how shall we escape [G: be delivered]?

(Isa 20:2-4)
WBB 150f: [Friends] felt themselves to be the prophets of a new religious era. The word of the Lord burned within them and demanded expression in speech and action. Saturated with Bible knowledge, they there found examples for their own conduct. In this matter of testifying truth by signs, Old Testament prophecy and apocalyptic imagery were rich in fitting phrase and authoritative precedent. They read, for instance, that Isaiah (Ch 20; cf Micah 1:8) walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and a wonder upon Egypt andd Ethiopia.... Desiring to show that Cromwell, his Parliament and priests would be stripped of their power, [they] acted again, as they supposed, the sign of the prophet, all the more zealously because their natural feelings shrank from obedience to the Divine command.
GF3:148 (1659): and if any have been moved of the Lord, to put off their clothes, it has been as a sign among you [Isa 20:2-4], to show you are naked and want the covering of the spirit [Isa 30:1].
GF3:495 (1659): It was the mind of the Lord for Isaiah to go naked, and to strip himself in Egypt and Ethiopia [Isa 20:2-4], as many are moved of the Lord to go naked among you of spiritual Egypt [Rev 11:8] and Ethiopia, and to put off their clothes; which is a figure to you, that the sheep's clothing must be taken off your ravening wolves' backs [Mat 7:15].
JN1:205 (1654): ... the Lord hath caused some of his servants to go naked [Isa 20:2-4] along your streets ... as signs of his wrath to come [Mat 3:7] upon that pride and fullness [Ezek 16:49] that priests and people live in....
JN1:391 (1654): And for any going naked or being otherwise made signs and wonders to ye [Isa 20:2-4], which ye charge as a great thing against us, ye being ignorant of the power of God by which these men are acted, any wise man may know these do it not according to their own wills but in obedience unto God, which commands some have denied to obey, for which the heavy judgments of God have been laid upon them from which they could not be freed till they were made obedient, as is well known in Kendal.
RML 126 (William Simpson, 1660): As naked shall you be spiritually, as my body hath been temporally naked ... as a sign [Isa 20:2-4] of the nakedness and shame that is coming upon the Church of England [cf Isa 47:3, Nah 3:5 ].
TEM 28 (16–): [My father] began to reckon up a beadroll of faults against the Quakers, telling me ... that one of them stripped himself stark naked, and went in that unseemly manner about the streets, and fairs and on market days in great towns.... To the last charge of going naked, a particular answer ... was just then brought into mind aad put into my mouth, ... and that was the example of Isaiah, who went naked among the people for a long time [Isa 20:2-4]. "Ay," said my father, but you must consider that he was a prophet of the Lord, and had an express command from God to go so." "Yes sir," replied I, "I do consider that; but I consider also, that the Jews, among whom he lived, did not own him for a prophet, nor believe that he had such a command form God. And," added I, "how know we but that this Quaker may be a prophet too, and might be commanded to do as he did, for some reason which we understand not?"
