A key to Biblical allusions in early Quaker writings and early Quaker uses of Biblical phrases
1:1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
1:2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear [G: hearken], O earth: for the LORD hath spoken [G: said], I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
1:3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know [G: hath not known], my people doth not consider [G: hath not understond]. qtext
1:4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters [G: a seed of the wicked, corrupt children] : they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward [G: unto anger; they are gone backwards]. qtext
1:5 Why [G: Wherefore] should ye be stricken [G: smitten] any more? ye will revolt [G: for ye fall away] more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint [G: is heavy]. qtext
1:6 From the sole of the foot even [G omits] unto the head there is no soundness in it [G: nothing whole therein]; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores [G: but wounds, and swelling, and sores full of corruption] : they have not been closed, neither [G: they have not been wrapped, nor] bound up, neither mollified with ointment. qtext
1:7 Your country [G: land] is desolate [G: waste], your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it [G: strangers devour your land] in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by [G: like the overthrow of] strangers.
1:8 And the daughter of Zion is left as [G: shall remain like] a cottage in a vineyard, as [G: like] a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as [G: and like] a besieged city.
1:9 Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant [G: reserved unto us even a small remnant], we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah. qtext

GFT 116 (1675): So now, his blood and flesh giveth new life [John 6:54]. Life is the heavenly btread. Do not the ox know his owner, and the ass his master's crib [Isa 1:3]? Thy owner is he that hath purchased thee and bought thee [Acts 20:28/1 Cor 6:20]. Does thou know thy owner? Does thou know thy crib? Then thou knowest thou hast thy bread of life from above [John 6:48-51].
IP1:404 (1660): Outward Israel was a true and full resemblance of [fallen man], who had many teachings, a pure law of worship and sacrificing, many prophets to reduce and restore them to the right path of holiness and obedience, but still they were erring in their hearts from the Lord [Psa 95:10], and his pure law of life; not knowing their owner, or their master's crib, so well as the ox or ass did theirs. Isa 1:3.

IP2:226f (1661): Under the judges they [the outward Jews] tried out the Lord's patient expectation of good from his delivering hand, insomuch as he resolved to deliver them no more. Judg 10:13. Under the kings they were as unruly (whether good kings or bad kings, given in love or wrath), insomuch as the Lord said, "Why would ye be stricken any more? Ye will revolt, more and more." Isa 1:5. There was, indeed, no bending of Israel after the flesh, and keeping him strait to God, in that way of dispensation; therefore must he be cast off; even becoming reprobate silver in the sight of the whole earth, because the Lotd would reject him [Jer 6:30].

GF3:472 (1659): You have cast them out that tremble at the word of God [Isa 66:2,5], and have made them your by-word [Job 17:6], and written and printed against them, but the Lord hath appeared to their glory: and what kind of saints are you, with your close iniquity..., and Sion from the head to the foot all full of putrified sores, and no soundness from the head to the foot [Isa 1:6]? And now do you call to them that tremble at the word of God, whom you have cast out, whom in scorn you have called Quakers? Will you now turn Quakers? Do you begin to be ashamed?
(Isa 1:9)
GF2:313 (1686/7): A holy man said: "Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed or remnant, we had been as Sodom [Isa 1:9/Rom 9:29]," &c., that is destroyed. But in the seed, which destroys the devil and his works [Heb 2:14/1 Jn 3:8], and bruises the head of the serpent and his seed [Gen 3:15], are all nations and families of the earth blessed [Gen 22:18].
1:10 Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers [G: O princes] of Sodom; give ear [G: hearken] unto the law of our God, ye [G: O] people of Gomorrah.
1:11 To what purpose is the multitude [G: What have I to do with the multitude] of your sacrifices unto me [G omits]? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in [G: desire not] the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. qtext

1:13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. [G: I cannot suffer your new moons, nor Sabbaths, nor solemn days (it is inquity) nor solemn assemblies].. qtext
1:14 [G: +My soul hateth] Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth [G omits]: they are a trouble [G: burden] unto me; I am weary to bear them. qtext

JN1:183f (1654): And when you leave all that say they are Christ's ministers to Christ's maintenance set down in the gospel [Mat 10:8-14, Luk 10:1-11], then it will appear who have run unsent [Jer 23:21], and have not profited the people [Jer 23:32].... And are you doing any acceptable service to God in maintaining such as these as they live? And will it not be said to you one day, who required these things at your hands [Isa 1:12], to oppress the poor who labor hard to give their labors to maintain these belly-gods [Phil 3:19] (contrary to their consciences) in their fullness, pride and lust, and their wives and families in idleness [Ezek 16:49]; and they that labor for it are many times in great want [margin: Prov 22:16]?
WTG 215 (Elizabeth Hudson, 1750): ...the creaturely part is apt to be restless and uneasy under disappointments of this sort and here is a foundation for the enemy to build in and where he has often prevailed upon even honest minds to go beyond the word of the Lord and cause them to run where the Lord sent them not [Jer 23:21], to their own confusion; and oh the death one wrong step of this sort brings upon the soul and what an humbling query is this to be sounded in the ear of the soul, "Who hath required this at thy hand [Isa 1:12]?"
(Isa 1:13)
RBA 343, RBAF 299f (1678, XI.28): [Continued from under 1 Cor 14:15] But the worship, preaching, praying and singing which our adversaries plead for, and which we oppose, is a worship which is both begun, carried on, and concluded in man's own natural will and strength, without the motion or influence of God's Spirit, which they judge they need not wait for, and therefore may be truly acted, both as to the matter and manner, by the wickedest of men. Such was the worship and vain oblations which God always rejected, as appears from Isa 55 3: Jer 14:12, &c; Isa 1:13; Prov 15:29; John 9:31.
HPS 516 (Dorcas Dole, 1684): though there be no need to say to some "know the Lord [Jer 31:34]," yet there is great need to say to some "obey the Lord"; for Obedience is better than sacrifice, and to hearken to the voice of God than all vain oblations [1 Sam 15:22/Isa 1:13]; (continued under John 10:16)
(Isa 1:14)
IP1:176 (1659): ...at the beginning of these late troubles, the stirring of the simplicity from the pure seed was more vigorous and lively than it had been in many ages before; and accordingly the answers of God to it were more fresh and sweet; and there was a taste of him [Psa 34:8], and fellowship with him [1 Jn 1:3], and sweet hopes and refreshments to the soul. Though the way of praying, preaching, and worship, either public or private, was not right before him; yet he overlooked that which his soul hated [Isa 1:14] ... and met with that which he loved. And if the simplicity had grown and thriven, communion with God, and life from him, would have increased, although the pure path of the sanctuary had not yet been made manifest.
(Isa 1:15)
GF3:532 (1659): ...thou, with the devil's doctrine [1 Tim 4:1], shuts up the kingdom of heaven against others, and will not go in thyself [Mat 23:13], who says, let men repent, and do all that ever they can, they must go to hell; when God wills not the death of a sinner but rather that he should turn from his wickedness and live, Ezek 33:11, but he is merciful, and judges not as thou dost, whose eyes are blinded, and whose hads are full of blood [Isa 1:15].

IP1:418f (1660): ...could the wise Jews stoop to the law within [Psa 40:8], to the word in the heart [Deut 30:14] ... to learn there to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with their God? Mic 6:8. Could they wait there to have their hearts circumcised [Deut 30:6] by that word of power, and so to be washed and made clean [Isa 1:16]? Nay, were they not drowned in the outward sacrifices, temple, incense, new-moons and sabbaths, and such kind of observations [Isa 1:11-14], and could not hear the truth of the Lord as it was delivered by Moses, nor as it was opened by the prophets.

SIW 135 (Mary Alexander, 1797): That evening we had a meeting at Hempnall, where was a great variety of states; a few solid people, and many of a very different description. To the latter in a very remarkable manner, the extension of divine goodness was evidently manifested, to save them from destruction, if there was but a willingness to accept ot the means of purification. "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord" [Isa 1:18] was awfully sounded amongst them.

GF5:341 (1676): And therefore, "whilst it is called today, hear his voice, and harden not your hearts [Heb 3:15]," and not only hear, but obey; for it is the "obedient to Christ that shall eat the fat of the heavenly land, and inherit substance [Isa 1:19/Prov 8:21]."
WPR 168 (1882): The way of God is a way of faith, as dark to sense as mortal to self. 'Tis the children of obedience [cf Eph 2:2,5:6] that count, with holy Paul, all things dross and dung that they may win Christ [Phil 3:8], that know and walk in this narrow way [Mat 7:14]. Speculation won't do, nor can refined notions enter, the obedient only eat the good of this land [Isa 1:19]; they that do my will (says the blessed Jesus) shall know of my doctrine [John 7:17]; them he will instruct; there is no room for instruction where lawful self is lord and not servant. IP1:332f (1659): So likewise for railing speeches. The false prophets can speak smooth words; speaking in the fleshly wisdom [2 Cor 1:12], they can please the fleshly part in their very reproofs; but he that speaks from God, must speak his words, how harsh soever they seem to the fleshly part. And he that speaks in his name, spirit, majesty, and authority, is exalted high above the consideration of the person to whom he speaks. What is a prince, a magistrate, a ruler, before the Lord, but clay [Isa 64:8], or dust and ashes [Gen 18:27]? If the Lord bid any of his servants call that, which was once the faithful city, harlot [Isa 1:21]; and say, concerning her princes, that they are rebellious, and companions of thieves [Isa 1:23], what is the poor earthen vessel [2 Cor 4:7], that it should go to change or mollify this speech?

JN3:77 (1656): True judgment (as it is known to men) is a gift from the Spirit of God, set in the heart of everyone who dwells in the light of Christ, which judgment passes on all that is in the creature, contrary to the life of God; and so as it is received, springs up with life and salvation, to the redeeming of the heart from all uncleanness, condemning all which is contrary to purity, that God may be seen in his dwelling place with his righteousness. And so he is said to redeem Zion with judgment, and her converts with righteousness [Isa 1:27]; and to purge away the filth of the daughter of Zion with the Spirit of judgment and the Spirit of burning [Isa 4:4]. HPS 59f (Mary Forster, 1659): But now arise and shine [Isa 60:1], O daughter of Sion, shake thyself from thy dust, put on thy beautiful garments [Isa 52:1f], for thy Maker is thy husband, the holy one of Israel [Isa 54:5], and he will plead thy cause [Prov 22:23 et al], and the mountains of the Lord shall be exalted on the tops of all Mountains [Isa 2:2 | Mic 4:1]; and as he is risen in us, and become our first fruits unto God [1 Cor 15:20], so is he also risen for us even to cast out all our enemies....

RBA 469f, RBAF 428 (1678, XV.14): the prophets Isaiah and Micah have expressly prophesied, that in the mountain of the house of the Lord, Christ shall judge the nations, and then "they shall beat their swords into ploughshares," &c. [Isa 2:4 | Mic 4:3]; and the ancient Fathers of the first three hundred years after Christ did affirm those prophecies to be fulfilled in the Christians of their times, who were most averse from war, concerning which Justin Martyr, Tertullian, and others may be seen; which need not seem strange to any, sincePhilo Judaeus abundantly testifies of the Essenes, that "there was none found among them, that would make instruments of war." But how much more did Jesus come, that he might keep his followers from fighting, and might bring them to patience and charity.
WTG 325f (Ann Moore, 1758): No joy, nor peace in this world is to be compared with a redemption from the world, the flesh, and the wicked one. Those who witnessed this done in them and for them, know by experience the time is come, when swords should be beat into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks and not to learn war any more [Isa 2:4].

Then are ye Christians indeed, and of the house of Jacob, which walk in the light of the Lord [Isa 2:5], and in the light of the holy city, whose light the Lamb is [Rev 21:23f]. EQ 515f (Robert Barclay, 1676): Christ is accused of the Jews as a Samaritan [John 8:48], and by the Samaritans quarreled for being a Jew [Luk 9:52f]. The apostle Paul is whipped and imprisoned by the Gentiles and upbraided with being a Jew, and teaching their customs; the same Paul is hated and ready to be killed by the Jews for breaking the law, and defiling the temple with the Gentiles. The like hath also befallen these faithful witnesses and messengers, whom God hath raised up in this day to witness for his Truth, which hath long been in a great measure hid, but now is again revealed, and many brought to be witnesses of it, who thereby are come to walk in the light of the Lord [Isa 2:5].

IP4:107 (1671): For indeed, when the mighty day of the Lord came upon us, and his pure, heavenly light shone in our hearts [2 Cor 4:6], God searched Jerusalem as with candles [Zeph 1:12], discovering the most hidden things of Esau's nature inwardly [Obad 1:6]; and then all the knowledge and wisdom, all the understanding and experiences, which were treasured up in us out of the pure life, out of the truth, which lives and abides, they were found dead, and condemned as dead in us, and so cast forth, as the treasures of Egypt and Babylon [Heb 11:26], and thrown to the bats and moles [Isa 2:20]; who either creep up and down in the earthly nature, or soar aloft in the dark dreams and imaginations of the night of darkness and apostasy.

WDS 228 (1671): In these trying days, be not afraid of what man can do [Psa 118:6], whose breath is in his nostrils [Isa 2:22]; but look up to the all-sufficiency of Almighty God, to stay your minds on him [Isa 26:3], who has counted you worthy to suffer for him [Acts 5:41]. WPR 144 (1677): But there is a bread that never perisheth, and there is a fountain that spiringeth up unto eternal life [John 4:14], and blessed are they that feed and drink thereof; for they shall have eternal life with God [John 6:54]. This is that which only satisfieth what is born of God; it will feed on no other bread, nor drink of no other water. I cannot but warn you all that are come to the Lord's Day, that you cease from all other food, from man [Isa 2:22] and man's will and invention; for that stifleth the divine sense; that overlayeth and killeth this heavenly birth. There are no grapes to be gathered of thorns, or figs of thistles [Mat 7:16].
