31:1 Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD! qtext
31:2 Yet he also is wise, and [G: But he yet is wisest: therefore he] will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but [G: turn back his word, but he] will arise against the house of the evildoers [G: wicked] , and against the help of them that work iniquity [G: vanity] . qtext
31:3 Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth [G: the helper] shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down [G omits] , and they all shall fail together [G: shall altogether fail] . qtext
31:4 For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like [G omits] as the lion and the young lion roaring on [G: or lion's whelp roareth upon] his prey, when [G: against whom if] a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him [G: be called] , he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them [G: neither will humble himself at their noise] : so shall the LORD of hosts come down to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof.
31:5 As birds flying [G: that fly] , so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it [G: by defending and delivering, by passing through and preserving it]. .
31:6 Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted. [G 31:6: O ye children of Israel, turn again, inasmuch as ye are sunken deep in rebellion.]
31:7 For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin [G: you, even a sin] . qtext
31:8 Then shall the Assyrian fall with [G: Asshur fall by] the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall [man, neither shall the sword of man] devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited [G: faint] .
31:9 And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear [G: go for fear to his tower] , and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign [G: standard] , saith the LORD, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem. qtext

WTG 75 (Susanna Morris, 1745): Certainly the flesh may without due care (when trials and troubles come), be in danger to go down to Egypt for help [Isa 31:1] as King Saul did for want of a patient waiting for the prophet's coming which was not only the Lord's will but his duty. He lost the Kingdom [1 Sam 13:1-14].

IP2:157f (1661): If the Lord shall undertake the defence of a nation by his Spirit and power, what can hurt that nation? What power of man can reach it, to disturb the peace of it? "The Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not Spirit." Isa 31:3. What could Sennacherib with his army do against one angel in the time of the law? [2 K 19:35f=Isa 37:36f] How many of his host were slain in one night? And what power then shall be able to prevail over a nation brought into the peaceable Spirit of the gospel, and defended therein by the mighty power of God himself?

32:5 The vile person [G: niggard] shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful [G: rich].
32:6 For the vile person will speak villany [G: niggard will speak of niggardness], and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error [G: and do wickedly, and speak falsely] against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will [G: hungry soul, and to] cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

HPS 410 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): Christ ... hath made himself known unto his servants by such peculiar names, as suited the particular circumstances of their souls: and according to their several experiences of him, so they reported concerning him, Isaiah describes him to be as the "shadow of a great rock in a weary land [Isa 32:2], a refuge from heat, a cover from rain and from storms [Isa 4:6]". Again, he speaks of his being to his people, "as a place of broad rivers and streams," Isa 33:21.

HPS 504 (Katharine Whitton, 1681): For saith the Lord, "Cry aloud and spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sin" [Isa 58:1]. Yea it is a warning from the Almighty, to all and every one of the backsliders in Israel, and lukewarm ones, and careless daughters of Jerusalem, and women at ease in Sion [Isa 32:9], yea an alarm is sounded out of the holy mountain [Joel 2:1], that you may hear and be awakened to righteousness [1 Cor 15:34], and stirred up to holiness, to meet the Lord in the way of his pure judgments; for woe will be to those that are at ease [Amos 6:1] in that day that is coming....
32:13 Upon the land of my people shall come up [G: grow] thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city [G: city of rejoicing] :
32:14 Because the palaces [G: palace] shall be forsaken; the multitude [G: noise] of the city shall be left; the forts and towers [G: tower and fortress] shall be for dens for ever, a joy [G: and the delight] of wild asses, a pasture of [G: and a pasture for] flocks;
32:15 Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high [G: above] , and the wilderness be [G: become] a fruitful field, and the fruitful [G: plenteous] field be counted for [G: as] a forest. qtext

IP2:229f (1661): IP2:229f (1661): [Substantive exposition of Isa 32:15-18 in relation to the workings of the Spirit, concluding:] But there is to be a more general pouring out of the Spirit, even upon all flesh [Joel 2:28], and the wilderness is more generally to be visited, and become a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is more generally to be blasted and made a forest [Isa 32:15]; insomuch as all flesh everywhere shall appear grass, and the glory thereof as the flower in the field, which shall fade and wither before the breath of God's Spirit [Isa 40:6f]. Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness which is then visited, and righteousness shall remain in the field which is then made fruitful [Isa 32:16]; and righteousness shall be powerfully operative, working out the lasting peace; and the effect of it shall be "quietness and assurance for ever [Isa 32:17]." No more war, no more fighting with creatures, no more burdening and oppressing of the creation, no more sinning and offending against the Creator, no more being dispossessed of his life and glory; but the dwellings which God reareth up in the last days for Israel, his people, shall be peaceable habitations, sure dwellings, and quiet resting-places for evermore [Isa 32:18]. GFJN 10 ([1647]): Thou, Lord, makest a fruitful field a barren wilderness [Psa 107:34], and a barren wilderness a fruitful field [Isa 32:15]; thou bringest down and settest up [1 Sam 2:6]; thou killest and makest alive [Deu 32:39]; all honour and glory be to thee, O Lord of glory!
WDS 302 (1668): You are not to quench the Spirit [1 Th 5:19] of the Lord in this his day, that he is come and doth appear, in giving divers gifts unto his people, in his appearance, as he did amongst his disciples who waited at Jerusalem for the pourings forth of his Spirit from on high [Luk 24:49/Isa 32:15]....

JWJM 69 (1757): When we look toward the end of life and think on the division of our substance among our successors, if we know that it was collected in the fear of the Lord, in honesty, in equity, and in uprightness of heart before him, we may consider it as his gift to us and with a single eye to his blessing [Mat 6:22] bestow it on those we leave behind us. SIW 68 (Catherine Payton Phillips, 1797): Such as have a strong and quick imagination, and whose hearts have been deeply affected with the exceeding sinfulness of sin, and of the love of God to mankind; whose desires are strong, that the one might come to an end, and the other abound in the earth; it is difficult for these at all times (especially when young in religious experience) to keep the quiet habitation [Isa 32:18], wherein alone the voice of the true Shepherd is to be heard, and distinguished from that of the stranger's [John 10:4f].

IP3:213 (1672): For there is a state of discipleship, wherein a man hardly knoweth a settlement, so much as how to watch with Christ [Mat 26:38] rightly and constantly; but it is a great matter to be able to dwell and abide with him. None can do this, but he that can dwell with devouring fire and everlasting burnings [Isa 33:14]; for the pure word of life [1 Jn 1:1] is a fire [Jer 23:29], and he that sits down in the heavenly place in him [Eph 2:6], must sit down in that fire.

HPS 344f (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): And truly, my Friends, this is the testimony this people bears this day against the corrupt ways and practices of the world, both among professors and profane, telling of them plainly, that all unrighteousness is sin [1 Jn 5:17]; and for this cause, I know, were power given into men's hands, they should quickly be rooted out from amongst them; but though they put no trust in an arm of flesh [Jer 17:5], yet they have a strong tower of defence (even the name of the Lord), which they run into, and are safe [Prov 18:10]: this is their munition of rocks [Isa 33:16], whereunto their adversaries cannot climb up....
JWJM 49: [Epistle from General Spring Meeting, 1755] And now dear Friends, with respect to the commotions and stirrings of the powers of the earth at this time near us, we are desirous that none of us may be moved thereat, but repose ourselves in the munition of that rock [Isa 33:16] that all these shakings shall not move [Heb 12:27], even in the knowledge and feeling of the eternal power of God keeping us subjectly given up to his heavenly will, and feel it daily to mortify that which remains in any of us which is of this world.
