31:1 Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD! qtext

31:5 As birds flying [G: that fly] , so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it [G: by defending and delivering, by passing through and preserving it]. .

31:6 Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted. [G 31:6: O ye children of Israel, turn again, inasmuch as ye are sunken deep in rebellion.]

31:7 For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin [G: you, even a sin] . qtext

31:8 Then shall the Assyrian fall with [G: Asshur fall by] the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall [man, neither shall the sword of man] devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited [G: faint] .

31:9 And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear [G: go for fear to his tower] , and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign [G: standard] , saith the LORD, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem. qtext

WTG 75 (Susanna Morris, 1745): Certainly the flesh may without due care (when trials and troubles come), be in danger to go down to Egypt for help [Isa 31:1] as King Saul did for want of a patient waiting for the prophet's coming which was not only the Lord's will but his duty. He lost the Kingdom [1 Sam 13:1-14].

IP2:157f (1661): If the Lord shall undertake the defence of a nation by his Spirit and power, what can hurt that nation? What power of man can reach it, to disturb the peace of it? "The Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not Spirit." Isa 31:3. What could Sennacherib with his army do against one angel in the time of the law? [2 K 19:35f=Isa 37:36f] How many of his host were slain in one night? And what power then shall be able to prevail over a nation brought into the peaceable Spirit of the gospel, and defended therein by the mighty power of God himself?

32:1 Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness [G: justice] , and princes shall rule in judgment. qtext

HPS 410 (Elizabeth Bathurst, 1679): Christ ... hath made himself known unto his servants by such peculiar names, as suited the particular circumstances of their souls: and according to their several experiences of him, so they reported concerning him, Isaiah describes him to be as the "shadow of a great rock in a weary land [Isa 32:2], a refuge from heat, a cover from rain and from storms [Isa 4:6]". Again, he speaks of his being to his people, "as a place of broad rivers and streams," Isa 33:21.

Yea it is a warning from the Almighty, to all and every one of the backsliders in Israel, and lukewarm ones, and careless daughters of Jerusalem, and women at ease in Sion [Isa 32:9], yea an alarm is sounded out of the holy mountain [Joel 2:1], that you may hear and be awakened to righteousness [1 Cor 15:34], and stirred up to holiness, to meet the Lord in the way of his pure judgments; for woe will be to those that are at ease [Amos 6:1] in that day that is coming....

Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness which is then visited, and righteousness shall remain in the field which is then made fruitful [Isa 32:16]; and righteousness shall be powerfully operative, working out the lasting peace; and the effect of it shall be "quietness and assurance for ever [Isa 32:17]." SIW 68 (Catherine Payton Phillips, 1797): Such as have a strong and quick imagination, and whose hearts have been deeply affected with the exceeding sinfulness of sin, and of the love of God to mankind; whose desires are strong, that the one might come to an end, and the other abound in the earth; it is difficult for these at all times (especially when young in religious experience) to keep the quiet habitation [Isa 32:18], wherein alone the voice of the true Shepherd is to be heard, and distinguished from that of the stranger's [John 10:4f].

IP3:213 (1672): For there is a state of discipleship, wherein a man hardly knoweth a settlement, so much as how to watch with Christ [Mat 26:38] rightly and constantly; but it is a great matter to be able to dwell and abide with him.
